Pivot Transformation Produces Duplicates

Hey,

I am using the pivot component in SSIS to pivot a set of data, and up until now it has worked fine. However lately it has started to produce duplicates, meaning 2 rows for a combination of the keys (type 1) used. It is completely random, meaning a combination of keys for one run can work correctly, and in the next run it inserts an extra record for the combination for just one of the pivoted values. This also means that for a batch of 10 mill rows input the output is completely random, because the number of duplicates vary.

Are there any memory restrictions or similar that causes this, or do you guys have any idea what might be wrong?

Pivot Transformation Help

Hi Guys, wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction with this one.

I'm fairly new to SSIS and one data flow transformation i'm trying to get my head around is the pivot transformation. Perhaps if i explain what i want it to do it will make my problem seems clearer.

I have a table which contains a list of people and their demographic and personal details, each with a unique identifier number. When each persons details are entered one of the pieces of data captured is the month they were registered and their ethnic group classification. Within my data flow i want to take this table of registrations and pivot it like you would in Excel e.g. take the whole list, add months as the columns and ethnic categories as the rows and then a count of the unique identifiers as the value, giving you a simple count of all of the customers and what different ethnic groups per month were registered. Simple enough??

Now, i've tried to do this using the pivot and i seem to be getting lost so after reading the chapter from my wrox book i've tried to outline how i think it should be configured to see if it makes anymore sense, i'd appreciate it if anyone could point out where i might be going wrong.......

In my example i'm assuming my input columns will be the unique identifier, the ethnic group and the month?

I'll then select the ethnic group as the row and the month as the pivot and the unique code as the value using the pivotusage properties of 1, 2, 3. still on the right track??

I then create an output column of each month and set the pivotkey value to the month name and the lineageID to the ID of the unique identifer column.

Can anyone spot if i've missed something out here?

Pivot Transformation Help

Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this problem?

I have set my PivotKey to be a Column containing the ColumnNames which I want to Pivot. I have taken the LineAgeId value from the Input column and used it as my SourceColumnID in the Ouput Columns tab.

Error 1 Validation error. Data Flow Task: Pivot [231]: Output column "ATTRIBUTENAME" (489) cannot be mapped to PivotKey input column. Package.dtsx 0 0

In Table 2, Product No divided by Grade. I want to lookup the Quantity from Table 1 to Table 2. The same Product No will have 1 value, the other value is 0. The result for Column Quantity should be like this:

Unpivot And Pivot Transformation Issue

I have selected columns Fee 1 and Fee 2 in Unpivot Transformation. I set the "FeeAmount" as Destination Column Name and "FeeType" as Pivot Key Value Column Name. I left the Pivot Key Value as is for all the selected columns. So far no issue that I am able to get the Fee Type and Fee Amount columns for my destination table.

But the issue is how to get the Currency Type for each corresponding coulmns? I was not able to get the currency type for each student. I hope you got my point. Please let me know If have further queries and hel me out to find this.

Power Pivot :: Create Measure Within Date Dimension Table To Sum Single Entry Per Month Eliminating Duplicates

We are trying to do some utilization calculations that need to factor in a given number of holiday hours per month.

I have a date dimension table (dimdate).  Has a row for every day of every year (2006-2015)

I have a work entry fact table (timedetail).  Has a row for every work entry.  Each row has a worked date, and this column has a relationship to dimdate.

Our holidays fluctuate, and we offer floating holidays that our staff get to pick.  So we cannot hard code which individual dates in dimdate as holidays.  So what we have done is added a column to our dimdate table called HolidayHoursPerMonth. 

This column will list the number of holiday hours available in the given month that the individual date happens to fall within, thus there are a lot of duplicates.  Below is a brief example of dimdate.  In the example below, there are 0 holiday hours for the month of June, and their are 8 holiday hours for the month of July.

I have a pivot table create based of the fact table.  I then have various date slicers from the dimension table (i.e. year, month).  If I simply drag this column into the pivot table and summarize by MAX it works when you are sliced on a single month, but breaks if anything but a single month is sliced on.  

I am trying to create a measure that calculates the amount of holiday hours based on the what's sliced, but only using a single value for each month.  For example July should just be 8, not  8 x #of days in the month. 

Listed below is how many hours per month.  So if you were to slice on an entire year, the measure should equal 64.  If you sliced on Jan, Feb and March, the measure should equal 12.  If you were to slice nothing, thus including all 15 years in our dimdate table, the measure should equal 640 (10 years x 64 hours per year).

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Rank Duplicates But Only Rows Involved In Duplicates?

I have a table with 22 million Business records. I can see that there are duplicates when I group by BusinessName and Address and Phone. I'd like to place only the duplicates into a table, with a ranking, oldest business key gets a ranking of 1.

As a bonus I'd like each group to have a distinct group name (although not necessary, just want to know how to do this)

Later after I run more verifications to make sure these are not referenced elsewhere I'll delete everything with a matchRank > 1 out of the main Business table.

Does A Synchronous Transformation Process All Rows In A Buffer Before Outputting To Next Transformation?

Hi,

If you have two synchronous transformation components and the input of the second is connected to the output of the first, does the first transformation process (loop through) all rows in the buffer before outputting these rows to the second transformation? Or does the first transformation output each individual row to the second transormation as soon as it has finished processing it?

When both results display, I end up with certain pieces of data from his client and he ends up with certain pieces of data from my client. CHECKSUM , Produces Same Hash For Two Different Inputs. Is This Right?

VB6 ADO 2.7 SQL 6.5 Error Not Raised If Execute Produces A Warning First

If I run a stored procedure that contains a Print statement or gives a warning. Then any error that occurs after that is ignored. No error state is raised in VB and the Errors collection only contains the print or warning.

Can anyone tell me why?

SQL Startup Produces Resource Manager Error

We have two instances of SQL Server 2005 - SP1 installed on one server. The default instance starts very slowly. When looking at the log I can see the delay is due to Resource Manager based upon the following error.

Resource Manager Creation Failed: 0x8004d102(XACT_E_DUPLICATE_GUID)

What does this mean?

What would cause this to happen?

How do I resolve the problem?

BCP Batch File Produces Sporatic Corrupt Data

Matt writes "Greetings! Warning, I'm a rookie. I wrote a stored procedure to pull data in order to do a nightly export/import from one system to another. I have a batch file that looks like this:

bcp "exec WinSNAP_retrieveStudents '0607'" queryout c:WinSNAPData06.txt -c -U user -P password

Sometimes, the file works and I get perfectly formed data, with everything just as I've requested (mostly basic demographic information: names, addresses, etc.).

But, other times the output file contains nothing but garbage characters, like this:

The file size looks right, but it contains nothing but characters like this from beginning to end. I can find no pattern as to why/when good data gets pulled versus the corrupt data. I can run the batch file one minute and get good data, and run it the next minute and it's all corrupt. We have the batch file scheduled late at night when no users are online, and I get the same results -- one day it works, the next it doesn't.

Forgive me if this is a well-documented issue -- my searches so far haven't turned up a thing!

Produces Multiple Lines, Need To Populate Single Line

I need to, ultimately, create a flatfile for exporting insurance information to a third-party vendor. Each individual is to have no more than 1 line per file, which contains their coverage information, if any, on 4 different type of insurance. What i need is for 2 fields in a table to determine the output for multiple fields in the flatfile.

What I have so far works, to an extent. If I have insurance types 1, 2, 4 (of types 1-4) required output is (__ = 2 blank spaces):

While there is supposed to be 1 line, regardless of number of insurance types, it only produces 1 line per type. I first tried this in Access, and was able to get it to work, but it required multiple queries resulting in a crosstab, export to Excel and manually manipulate the data, export to text file to manipulate, import back into Excel to manipulate, import back into Access and finally export into a flatfile. Far too much work to produce a file which is why I'm trying to convert it to raw SQL.
Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not a SQL Server expert, but need to understand something. I'm currently have SQL Server 2000 SP4 installed locally on my machine for application development.

Using sp_lock, I noticed that there are lots of shared database locks. After some study, i produced this interesting script:

My question is about the extra lock added by the "Use Experience statement". It lasts as long as the Experience DB connection is open

Question 1:
The way I read this is: the "use Experience" statement creates a shared database lock.
Am I reading this right?


Question 2:
I started looking into this because my application produces lots of locks that seem to live for 15-20 minutes. I have not noticed other adverse side effects of these locks. I have confirmed that nothing I have control over creates transactions, so I do not see why locks would be maintained.
Should I be concerned about these locks? Is this expected behavior?

Left Outer Join Produces Cartesian Product

Tables have 100K rows. Inner join produces 99k. The outer join should be 100K. It is 1000 times larger.

If I do a SELECT DISTINCT, the right # rows are returned (100K)

What gives?

Regression Testing A Stored Procedure That Produces Multiple Rowsets

How do I write a regression test for a stored proc that produces multiple rowsets via multipl e select queries? E.g.

For single-select procs, I can create a temp table and INSERT #temp EXEC myProc, then evaluate the contents of the table to verify correct behavior, but that doesn't work in this case.

XML Source Produces DT_UI8 Key Columns - Which SQL Server Data Type To Store?

I'm using the XML Source to process a hierarchical set of XML. As such, the XML Source creates keys to maintain the hierarchy. This is very convenient, and keeps me from having to invent my own keys.

The problem is that the datatype of these keys defaults to DT_UI8. Which SQL Server 2005 datatype should I use to store these values in my staging tables? BIGINT corresponds to DT_I8, which can't accept DT_UI8 values.

Update Statement Using Declared Variable Produces Unexpected Results On SQL Server 2005

We are getting unexpected results from the following update statement when it is executed on SQL Server 2005.


The strange thing is that we get duplicated values for QM_UID (although when run under SQL Server 2000 we don't get duplicated values)


Can anyone explain why this happens or suggest another way of populating this column without using a cursor or adding a temporary autoincrement column and copying the values over?

Power Pivot :: One Slicer To Control Two Pivot Tables That Have Different Source Data And Common Key

I have two data tables:

1) Production data with column headers: Key, Facility, Line, Time, Output
2) Costs data with column headers: Key, Site, Cost Center, Time, Cost

The tables have a common key named obviously as Key. The data looks like this:

I would like to have two pivot tables which I can filter with ONE slicer based on the column Key. The first pivot table shows row labels Facility, Line and column labels Time. Value field is Output. The second pivot table shows row labels Site, Cost Center, and column lables Time. Value field is Cost.How can I do this with Power Pivot? I tried by linking both tables above to a table with unique Keys in PowerPivot and then creating a PivotTable where I would have used the Key from the Keys table.

Power Pivot :: ALL DAX Function Not Overriding Filter On Pivot Table

I have a simple pivot table (screenshot below) that has two variables on it: one for entry year and another for 6 month time intervals. I have very simple DAX functions that count rows to determine the population N (denominator), the number of records in the time intervals (numerator) and the simple percent of those two numbers.

The problem that I am having is that the function for the population N is not overriding the time interval on the pivot table when I use an ALL function to do so. I use ALL in other very simple pivot tables to do the same thing and it works fine.

The formula for all three are below, but the one that is the issue is the population N formula. Why ALL would not work, any other way to override the time period variable on the pivot table.

Population N (denominator):
=CALCULATE(COUNTROWS(analyticJudConsist),ALL(analyticJudConsist[CurrentTimeInCare1]))
Records in time interval (numerator):
=COUNTROWS(analyticJudConsist)
Percent:
=[countrows]/[denominatorCare]

Power Pivot :: Displaying Cumulating Numbers In A Pivot Table When There Is No Value

I have simple pivot table (below screenshot with info redacted) that displays a population number ("N" below), this is the denominator, a cumulative numerator number (below "#") and a simple cumulative percent that just divides the numerator by the denominator. It cumulates from top to bottom. The numerator and percent are cumulative using the below functions. There are two problems with the numerator and percent:

1. When there is not a number for the numerator, there is no value displayed for both the numerator and the percent..There should be a zero displayed for both values.
2. When there has been a prior number for the numerator and percent (for a prior month interval) but there is no number for the numerator in the current month interval, the prior month number and percent are not displayed in the current month interval--see the 3rd yellow line, this should display "3" and "16.7%" from the second yellow line.Here is the formula for the numerator:

Power Pivot :: Measures Not Reflected In Pivot Table

I have data in my Powerpivot window which was generated by a sql query. This data includes a field named 'Cost' and every row shows a value for 'Cost' greater than zero. The problem is that when I display this data in the pivot table all entries for Cost display as $0. At first I thought that maybe Cost was set to a bogus data type (such as 'text) but it is set to ''Decimal Number' so that's not the problem. 

What is happening and how do I fix it so that my pivot table reflects the values for 'Cost'?

Power Pivot :: Difference Between Two Pivot Table Sums?

I have a data table that contains budget and actual data by month.  I use the data to create a pivot that shows actual results next to budgeted results.  I need a column that shows that variance between those columns.  I think my issue is that the "Type" field contains actual and Budget.  I sum on "Type".  I can't seem to create a sum since those items are in the same field or am I missing something?
