Where would I find this. It's not listed under SQL forums. Is this a general setup forum or specific to SQL?
Thanks......

In my string below, my forum setup up file, setup.asp , when run delivers an error that it is unable to connect to the database. Error: 800004005
I am running this from within IIS 5.0 aon a Windows 2000 Server, by right clicking the file in IIS and choosing "browse" I am trying to set this up so user IUSR_SERVER_NAME can "read and Write" to the database or instance I have created called rpggamerpro. The authentication in the SSSAC is set to use both Windows and SQL Authentication for the "master". I have set permissions on the folder which contains the SQL 2005 Express installation and database for IUSR_SERVER_NAME to read/write. I have created a IUSR_SERVER_NAME user in the Security/User directory for the database or instance "rpggamerpro" and gave the user read/write permissions there. So I am still at a loss as to what permissions, strings, settings, configuration or whatever the heck else needs to be done in order to get this thing to work. Please anyone willing to help a realative new commer to the SQL and DB world would be greatly appreciated.
trConnString = "Provider=SQLOLEDB;Data Source=nssqlexpress;database=rpggamerpro;uid=IUSR_NS;pwd=;" '## MS SQL Server 6.x/7.x/2000 (OLEDB connection)

I need to provide a media kit to other DBAs in my organization so that when they run the setup.exe it will automatically apply some "hardening" scripts that my team has written. We want it to be a seemless part of the installation process so that the scripts can be applied consistently across the organization.
Is there anyway to do this?

I'm new to using SQL server and have a few setup questions.
I'm setting up a database for the company I work for. Should I setup a different database for each division in our company (e.g. accounting, project management, estimating, etc.), or should I use just one database? It seems like it would be easier to use one database so I only have to use one connection, but is this ideal? I want all the info from the different divisions to be used together, but at this point I'm confused as to how to connect different databases together, if I were to go this way.
Thanks for any input or ideas!

Hi
We have a small Ethernet LAN running SBS 2003 R2. I have installed SQL Server 2005 that came with that release on the server. I did not specify a named instance.
1) What is the name of the default instance?
2) When I go to a client computer I cannot see the SQL server instance.
For example on my PC I have VS2005. If I go to Server Explorer, all I see is the local copy of SQL Server 2005 Express I have installed on my PC. I see nothing for the server. Does the server need configuring within SQL Server to allow this. Do I need to change permisions on the folders where the SQL Server 2005 files are stored.
In short, what basic steps do I need to follow to get acces to SQL Server on my server from a client.
3) If I want to create a new named instance, do I have to do Run the whole setup again? There appears to be no managemnt tool for instances of SQL server.
Thanks
Steve

I got 2 questions to ask:
1. I choose Windows and SQL authentication during setup. Will this have any impact on my connection string in Dot net?
2. If I want to host my db on my computer, what other protocols do I need to enable? Currently I got shared memory on.

All:
I am writing an Internet/Extranet based (ASP.Net 2.0) web application that uses SQL server 2005 as the database. I am using forms authentication on my web application. I am also storing the connection string to SQL server in my web config file. The conn string is encrypted using DPAPI with entropy. I currently have created a SQL login account on my SQL server for use by the web application. This is the user ID I am using in my conn string. The reason for this is because all persons using the application will NOT have a windows login.
Here is my question: The login I created currently has defaulted to the "dbo" role and therefore has "dbo" rights to the database. I want to setup up this login account so that all it can do is execute stored procedures. I dont want this SQL login to be able to do anything else. In my application I am using stored procedures for ALL data access functions, via a data access layer in my application. Can someone guide me step by step as to how to setup this type of access for this SQL login.
Thanks,
Blue.

Hello
I have a windows application that connects to a SQLExpress database hosted on a shared server. The client machines will run an interface software and interact with the info within SQL The SQL database isn't huge (50 megs) and all of the info is text. The interface application isn't too complex either, it was designed using VB.net05. I have a few setup questions:
1 - Is it best to use Windows or SQL authentiaction? Currently I am using Windows authentication and I have a user group setup on the DNS that is setup as a user for the SQL database. That has worked so far, but I've only had a few users logged in at one time so far. My plan was to add all DNS accounts that will use the software to the DNS user group, thus giving them access to the SQL database.
2 - I know this gets asked a TON, but I am interested in knowing how many users I should be able to support using the current setup. I have the one user acount setup for the DNS user group. The SQL table is not huge and it is all reading and writing text. The server is running Windows Server 03 and is a couple years old (not sure of exact specs).
Thanks for any help, I am still learning my way around SQL and it's great to have such a vast amount of support for the product.
Happy New Year!
Paul

I have XP Pro SP2 with MDAC 2.8.1022. It had a problem so I tried to reinstall MDAC and got a Fatal Setup Error. This setup does not support installing on this operating system. I downloaded MDAC 2.8 1177 and get the same error.
I thought of uninstalling/reinstalling SP2, but this is a 2 month old Dell Latitude 610 with factory installed XP. There is no Windows Service Pack 2 option listed in the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
There's some other strange things, so I wonder if they are related.
1) I have Paul set up as an administrator account. Some folders like MSSQL show that account with no permissions. I grant all the permissions to Paul for that folder. I come back later and the permissions are gone.
2) I deleted 20 files in Explorer, but 7 of them did not go away. I deleted those 7 again and they instatnly reappeared. I deleted those 7 again and then they finally went away.
3) I get a slow reaction time for things like Windows Explorer and opening and closing programs. This is suprising since it has 2 gig of RAM and 2.3 Gig processor. Could it be a memory handling problem that's causing OS problems. Probably, the memory didn't handle the OS installation well and the whole system is compromised now.

We're doing upgrades from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2014. This is blocked due to RS is installed but not configured. Our desired action is to uninstall RS and proceed with the upgrade. But when setuparp.exe is raised, it does not list all the features on the 'Select Features' page. In fact, it only lists the last 2 shared features (SQ Client Connectivity SDK and Microsoft Sync Framework). However, all items appear to be listed on the 'Select Instance' page including RS. I've seen this issue on 2 of our SQL 2008 R2 Servers already.

I'm trying to install SQL Server Management studio 2012 on my Windows 7 (x64) standalone laptop. When I click "New SQL stand-alone installation..." it runs a Setup Support Rules check and always fails "Setup Account Privileges". I've looked into the error and I keep getting that I need to change security rules but I don't have that option in window 7. How do I get around this without having to resort to a computer running Windows Server?
I have Visual Studio 2013 premium installed along with Localdb v11. I just want to connect and manage my database engine through SSMS when developing any application.

Evening,
I am very well versed in the proper way to set up a SQL Server server prior to installation.
In this I mean, the proper process in placing your MDF, LDF and NDF(s) on seperate spindles/discs and also to place TempDB on its own spindle/disc and such.
There are numerous other points to cover in setting up the server based on memory, security, processor and such but I am sure you understand.
What I am looking for is the link(s) to the whitepapers discussing these Best Practices methodologies for pre-installation setup.
I looked on the Best Practices page but did not seem to find a doc that contains all the Best Practices that should be followed, if possible of course, in setting up a server prior to the SQL Server 2005 installation process.
Can anyone please point me to a link(s)/doc(s) that describe what I am looking for.
I need to pass this information down to other members of my team.
Thanks and have a great day!

I am running a number of SQL instances on my PC. Within the network, I have think server with various System Center components. For compatibility reasons, some features of System Center 2012 R2 had to be delegated to different SQL databases. My question is, because there is now more than one IP address on my system, and each instance of SQL is assigned to its own IP, is there a way to setup DNS and SQL so the namespace points to the desired IP address? For Instance:
MSSQL2008 instance is set to run on = 11.12.13.1
MSSQL2012 is set to run on = 11.12.13.2
IN DNS:
A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.1
A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.2
If I want to use MSSQL2008 by specifying Mike-PC as the DNS name, how would I do that with 100% accuracy? If there is another way to get the job done, I am more than willing to approach this differently.

I have a very strange problem when I try to install SQL Express 2014 on 1 PC on my network.
The setup is blocking on the step "rules of functionnality" (I hope it is the good translation ...).
I ha ve a message that indicates that there is a problem the following checking : "It exists a Internet connection with the download center for Microsoft Framework 4.0". At the beginning I had Framework 3.5 and 4.5 installed on the PC.
When I tried to install manually Framework 4.0 I had a message that indicated that the setup was not possible because there was a Superior version. So I uninstall v4.5 and install v4.0 normally.
I run again SQL 2014 Express setup but I have always the same error. I take a look on Internet to look for the same problem but I found nothing.

I'll install SQL Server Express SP2 on Vista during my Setup.
But the setup beaks with error 110.
In other articles it sounds like an folder access problem.
On a Custom Action Type 210 i start a application which execute the sqlexpress.exe.
I tried some other codes to impersonate or noImersonate but without success.
But i can not use the unpacked files because size is to large(170MB)
An good Idea would be unpack the setup files during setup to an custom folder with right permissions.
But I dont know how unpack files without GUI (SQLEXPRESS x always show the GUI).
Any Idea???????????

The funny thing here is that it works fine when the installer is run from a network share, ie \testserversetupsetup.exe but when the same folder is burned to a CD or copied to a local folder it fails. I have verified that the folders are identical.
I'm not sure what info is required to pinpoint the problem but here are some log files and a screen shot of the message.
Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Martin

I'm trying in vain to upgrade sql server 2000 to 2005 with great headache and pain.
I (finally) have removed all Beta, and other incompatible version of .NET, Visual Studio and any other offending components, and made it to the first page of the install shield.
The .NET 2.0 components installed fine - but I get a fatal error trying to install the SQL Server Set Support Files.

First off, can you post .dtsx packages to the forum? I always end up cutting and pasting code, which is by is nature incomplete, as it generally has external dependencies (connections, variables).
Perhaps you cannot do so for security reasons?
Second, is there a good blog site that allows you to post .dtsx packages?
I'd rather post .dtsx links than cut and paste code (which half the time formats the code un-recognizably), or even worse, post package xml, which contains the layout information and possibly IL that makes it all but unreadable.

SP2 refuses to install for the Database Engine because €œthe previous upgrade did not complete€?, i.e. it detects a suspended installation. The same thing happened to me when I installed SP1. I then remember opening the maintenance dialog and completing the setup, after which SP1 installed just fine.
When I try to do the same thing this time, I€™m presented with the €?complete the suspended installation€? option, which when I run it reports the installation completed successfully. However, in reality the installation still remains in suspended mode for whatever reason. If I reboot and open the maintenance dialog, I€™m still presented with the €?complete the suspended installation€? option. I€™ve even tried to run it more than once, but it doesn€™t help. Needless to say, SP2 still refuses to install.
I don't know why the installation is in a suspended state. I know every part of SP1 installed successfully in the end, and the computer never crashed during the installation. I've been using it every day since then, without any problems. All other parts of SP2 did install successfully.
I created a feedback entry on Microsoft Connect, where you can find the log files created by Windows Installer. The URL is:
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=259606
Any ideas what I can do to resolve this problem?

Hi,
I wonder if anyone could tell me whether it is acceptable to post a SSIS contract vacancy on this forum?
If not, where would be the best forum/site to find UK-based SSIS developer contractors?
Many thanks,
Gavin.

During the installation of Adding node to a SQL Server failover cluster(On passive node) getting error like.. The MOF compiler could not connect with the WMI server. This is either because of a semantic error such as an incompatibility with the existing WMI repository or an actual error such as the failure of the WMI server to start. We  run the below commands but didn’t get any resolution & got the same above error .
Â
1st Method…
1. Open console command (Run->CMD with administrator privileges).Â
2. net stop winmgmtÂ
3. Rename folder %windir%System32WbemRepository to other one, for backup purposes (for example _Repository).Â
4. net start winmgmt
2ndÂ Method..
1. Disable and stop the WMI service.
a) Command : - sc config winmgmt start= disabled
b. Command : - Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â net stop winmgmt
2. Run the following commands.
a). Command: Winmgmt /salvagerepository %windir%System32wbem
b). Command: Â Winmgmt /resetrepository %windir%System32wbem
3. Re-enable the WMI service
Command:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â sc config winmgmt start= autoÂ
Last command to run after above steps
4. Command:Â Â Â Â mofcomp "%programfiles(x86)%Microsoft SQL Server100Sharedsqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof"
File not found Error for above command.
