Polyserve Versus MSCS (Microsoft Cluster Server)

Apr 30, 2007

Hello All,

I would like to compare the MSCS with Polyserve's solution and thus wondering if anyone has an experience using both or knows -

What are the major differences between the two?
What are the limitations?
What are the advantages and disadvantages?
Which is advisable to use as a HA solution?

Any other information which may help me to make this decision would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

SP2 On MSCS

Jun 20, 2000

Well, today's the day. I finally got approved to upgrade our 24x7 cluster to SQL Service Pack 2. I'm so looking forward to running Profiler without causing the server to failover, not to mention ArcserveIt and Spotlight an...
Anyway, Any feedback about the upgrade process is greatly appreciated. I've installed SP2 elsewhere without a hitch but I realize that I have to uncluster my production servers first and that there is no easy way back from SP2. I have full backups scheduled to run prior to the upgrade, any other ways to protect myself? Thanks in advance!!

Could you please suggest or direct me to any documentation for the best practices used to upgrade such an environment?

Dr Watson On Vsrvsvc.exe For MSCS

Anyone experience Dr Watson's on MS Cluster Server? This is the second time that it's happened and I can't explian it.

The first time it happened it appeared to stop the virtual server service on my prod server, Cluster admin showed it as running.

This time it bounced the engine but nothing stopped.

Any clue is much appreciated, because I don't have one

I'm at SP5 on NT4 and SP2 on SQL 7 EE.

2. Setting up the Link to a SQL 7 Server
3. Security is Mapped to a remote user which does exist on the Remote Server.

Any Ideas?

This also happens with anything else that requires () to add length such as char(), or nvarchar(), etc... Any ideas?

Upgrading A SQL Server 2000 Cluster To A SQL Server 2005 Cluster

Dec 28, 2007

We're upgrading a SQL Server 2000 cluster (Active/Passive) running on Windows 2000 Server to a SQL Server 2005 Cluster running on Windows Server 2003. We can't purchase new hardware and we have no spare hardware. We also need to move from Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 Server at the same time. We want to keep downtime to a bare minimum.

What we were thinking was the following steps... Anyone try this?

1. Break the link between the servers.

2. Install a fresh copy of windows 2003 server on one side along with SQL Server 2005. While this step is running, the active node would still be live on Windows 2000 Server and SQL Server 2000 serving our customers.

3. Restore a copy of a backup from the active production side to the node we're upgrading and at that point we would bring the active node down, switching the active node to be the newly upgraded server.

4. As a final step, the old active node would now have the link to it broken, we would install a fresh copy of windows 2003 server on it and sql server 2005. At this point we would bring it back into the cluster and the cluster would be complete again.

Thoughts?

SQL Server Versus Informix

SQL Server 2005 And 32-bit Versus 64-bit

Dec 14, 2006

Hi all,

we are about to purchase new database servers and have been offered a good deal on 64-bit Xeon machines. At present we run SQL 2000 on Windows Server 2003 both of which are 32-bit versions.

Is there any problem using our current 32-bit Server software on the 64-bit machines (apart from not being able to utilise its full power)? I'm assuming the SQL 2005 licenses are the same price regardless of 32-bit or 64-bit version. If we buy a 64-bit SQL Server version license are we going to get the best out of it on a 32-bit Windows Server edition?

SQL Server Versus Pervasive SQL/2000

May 25, 2007

Hi there,

Don't know if anyone can help,

There used to be a Whitepaper on the Microsoft website comparing SQL server (2000?) against Pervasive SQL or 2000, the link was http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/sql/.

But it's not working anymore.

Does anyone have a copy of this paper, or know where it's now located? I've been looking for hours and can't find it.

Thanks in advance.

Linked Server Security On BUILTIN Versus SA

Mar 16, 2007

I have this posted in the VFP section of the forums but the more I find out about the issue the more I think there is an SQL Server security issues.

What I am doing is trying to connect to a LinkedServer of my SQL Express 2005 database running on windows vista. I have the linked server set up to connect to a local FoxPro table using the VFPOLEDB provider. If I log in as the 'sa' account I am able to do my query. But if I log into the server using a trusted connection it doesn't work. I get the error [The OLE DB provider "VFPOLEDB" for linked server "sys" reported an error. The provider did not give any information about the error.]

So I went in and set the BUILTINUser login as the sysAdmin. I also made sure that all of the security settings in SQL server were set up the same between the trusted user and the 'sa' user.

My question is, What am I missing? Is there something that I need to set on windows or is there a setting in SQL server?
