Populate Dropdown List With Dimension Hierarchies

Dec 17, 2006

Hi,

I am currently trying to develop an application which would help in retrieving data from cubes (Microsoft Analysis Services)! The user would not be accessing the Business Intelligence Studio, etc. but would be viewing the data from a custom made application developed in VB.Net2005.

While implementing this, I want to populate the drop-down-list in the VB(.Net) Form, by retrieving the various hierarchies in the dimensions of the cubes (along with dimensions if possible). This should be done dynamically and in real-time!

Can you please help in implementing this? Any code/method, etc would be highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Best wishes!

(Software : SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition (with Analysis Services and BI Studio), VS.Net 2005 Enterprise Edition, ADOMD.Net)

How To Populate Table From Dropdown List?

Oct 18, 2005

Hi,I have table (tbl_a) that get it values form three Dropdown List and the PK of this table is FK in different table(tbl_b).Since tbl_a get its values from three Dropdown List the number of rows in this table is limited to the number of combinations the three Dropdown List is offer (in any case the number of raws in that table will be final).Assuming tbl_a and tbl_b are both empty.
The problem is that if i want to insert row to tbl_b i have to check first if there is a row that holds the values (or combination of values) i am getting from the Dropdown List in tbl_a .Then, if such row is exist i have to get the PK of that raw and insert it to tbl_b (as FK),if such row does not exist, i have to insert it and then get the PK of this row and insert it to tbl_b (as FK).
In the end, tbl_a will have all the combination the three Dropdown List can offer so checking if raw exist in this table will not be necessary.
In my opinion this is not effective way to do that. Can someone offer me better way to do it?
Thanks

Trying To Populate Dropdown List From SQL Data Source

SqlDataAdapter adapter = new SqlDataAdapter(cmd);
try

ddl_OppNames.DataSource = ds;
ddl_OppNames.DataBind;}catch (Exception e)

finally

[Dimension].[All Hierarchies].[All] ?

Feb 6, 2005

As promised, question #2... ;)

As I mentioned in my previous post, my "real" case is a cube with 79 dimensions, most of which virtual, have been added for convenience.

Think for instance about a time dimension... Wouldn't it be nice to get a matrix with years horizontally, months vertically and displaying say the number of order you had for each cell in the resulting grid.
Ok, maybe you can do this with MDX but not in Excel, unless you create virtual dimensions for the Year and Month levels.

That's all good, but as it is, in my real case, I end up with four date dimensions for which I have to provide:

YQMD (Year, Quarter, Month & Day) hirarchized dimension
YWD (Year, Week, Day)
YQMD (Fiscal calendar)
Year
Quarter
Month
Week
Day (as 1, .. 31)
Week Day (for periodicity analysis over a week's time)
Date (as individual day - this is the backbone for the virtual dimensions)

It turns out this makes 40 dimensions by itself. For the sake of it, I grouped them by 4 hierarchies, although I've seen no specific functionality off of this in the data browser or Excel, so it really seems to be only for "show".

Now in my previous post I explained how I "spread" my session count to calculate a conversion rate. Given the number of dimensions I have (very high segmentation at the order level, very limited segmentation at the session/visit level), this means my calculated cell formula looks like this (hold your breath, it's ugly):

SubCube: {[Measures].[Session Count]}, DESCENDANTS([Business Unit].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Channel Source].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Currency].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FO Product Segment].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FO Quarter].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FO Value Segment].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Is Cancelled].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Is Customer Care].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Is Design Services].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Is Direct].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Is Estimated].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Is Holiday Order].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Is New].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Is Sales Services].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Language].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Payment].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Product Segment].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Value Segment].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FO Channel].[All]), DESCENDANTS([Reg Channel].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FCD].[Date].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FCD].[Day].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FCD].[Mth].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FCD].[Qtr].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FCD].[Wk].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FCD].[WkDay].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FCD].[Year].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FCD].[Fiscal].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FCD].[YMQD].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FCD].[YWD].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FRD].[Date].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FRD].[Day].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FRD].[Mth].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FRD].[Qtr].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FRD].[Wk].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FRD].[WkDay].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FRD].[Year].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FRD].[Fiscal].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FRD].[YQMD].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FRD].[YWD].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FSD].[Date].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FSD].[Day].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FSD].[Mth].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FSD].[Qtr].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FSD].[Wk].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FSD].[WkDay].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FSD].[Year].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FSD].[Fiscal].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FSD].[YQMD].[All]), DESCENDANTS([FSD].[YWD].[All])

Caculation Value: CalculationPassValue(([Business Unit].[All],[Channel Source].[All],[Currency].[All],[FO Product Segment].[All],[FO Quarter].[All],[FO Value Segment].[All],[Is Cancelled].[All],[Is Customer Care].[All],[Is Design Services].[All],[Is Direct].[All],[Is Estimated].[All],[Is Holiday Order].[All],[Is New].[All],[Is Sales Services].[All],[Language].[All],[Payment].[All],[Product Segment].[All],[Value Segment].[All],[FO Channel].[All],[Reg Channel].[All],[FCD].[Date].[All],[FCD].[Day].[All],[FCD].[Mth].[All],[FCD].[Qtr].[All],[FCD].[Wk].[All],[FCD].[WkDay].[All],[FCD].[Year].[All],[FCD].[Fiscal].[All],[FCD].[YMQD].[All],[FCD].[YWD].[All],[FRD].[Date].[All],[FRD].[Day].[All],[FRD].[Mth].[All],[FRD].[Qtr].[All],[FRD].[Wk].[All],[FRD].[WkDay].[All],[FRD].[Year].[All],[FRD].[Fiscal].[All],[FRD].[YQMD].[All],[FRD].[YWD].[All],[FSD].[Date].[All],[FSD].[Day].[All],[FSD].[Mth].[All],[FSD].[Qtr].[All],[FSD].[Wk].[All],[FSD].[WkDay].[All],[FSD].[Year].[All],[FSD].[Fiscal].[All],[FSD].[YQMD].[All],[FSD].[YWD].[All],[Measures].[Session Count]), 0)

If you read all this, you can see already the cryptic dimension names like "FRD", "FSD" and so forth... that's because with the real names ("First Refund Date", "First Ship Date", the query processor errored out... visibly there is a limit in the size of the formulas you can post!

Is there no other way to achieve this result? Basically I mean to say: if the session count is not defined at your level along this dimension, go to the root of the dimension to get the value there, this along a slew of dimensions, many of which are inherently dependent because of the usage of virtual dimensions (therefore if I wish to go to the root of my "First Refund Date" for instance, I wish to do so along all sub-dimensions... Heck, as far as I'm concerned this is conceptually only ONE dimension, just with various views upon it...

Using hierachies I was sort of hoping for the ability to have something like:
[FRD].[All Hierachies].[All]

Am I just asking for too much or do I just not know (quite probable) the magic keyword that can do this?

Where this is becoming quite critical is that I actually have a calculated cell that goes as follows (abridged):

SubCube: similar as before

Calculation: [Measures].[Order Count]*CalculationPassValue((...set of all un-tied dimension roots..., [Measures].[Distributed Marketing Cost])/CalculationPassValue((...set of all un-tied dimension roots..., [Measures].[Order Count])

Now the purpose of this is to distribute external costs at the order level. In short, say that you know you spent $10,000 globally promoting a specific group of websites in commission money (you pay $1 for each order). This formula allows me to get that a specific website, with 20 orders incurred an additional marketing cost of $20. That's actually the object of my next thread's question (spreading a multiplication through the aggregations)

For the purpose of this thread I am just concerned about the size of my formulas. Renaming the dimensions seemed to "buy" me some margin and I was actually quite surprised to find that the formula still fitted in, and works, but it is only a matter of time until I have to add more dimensions and the whole thing blows up in my face. Adittionally this is obviously not pleasant to look at and maintain.

Any better solution?

Thanks,

Seb

Managing Hierarchies In Dimension Tables

Apr 20, 2006

I am currently looking at the capabilities in SSIS from the point of view of an ETL developer who has worked with other products eg. Informatica, Cognos DecisionStream and one of things I note is a lack of support for dimensional hierarchies.

It appears that MS have assumed that SSIS users will automatically use SSAS.

We use Hyperion Essbase. Other sites have Cognos or Business Objects for their OLAP/BI.

I would like to be able build multi-level dimension hierarchies directly from within SSIS.

Has MS considered this for future versions?

Populate Dropdown Box From SQL In Web Matrix?

Jan 22, 2004

I have been attempting to populate a dropdown (combo) box from a SQL query (SQLConnector) in Web Matrix and I have so far been unsuccessful. I have been able to populate a DataGrid just fine from the query, so then I limited it down to one colum (so itd be in the dropdown box) and set all the properties I could find (DataSource, DataMember, DataTextField, DataValueField) (and in all possible combinations) for that dropdown box to the SQL stuff (SQLConnector for the DataSource and then used the dropdowns for the others), and nothing shows up in my dropdown box. How can I make this populate off of my SQL query properly?

Additionally I will need to do the same thing for a Checkbox List so if it is the same and you know how to do that and could let me know for that too that'd be great.

Thanks a million in advance!

Parameter DropDown List Grayed-out

Dec 12, 2007

I am building a report with several search parameters; three of which are dropdown boxes each populated by a data set. I wanted something more user-friendly than the default "(Null)" in the dropdown, so for each data set, it returns a result set UNIONed with " N/A" to show up first as the default.

For some reason, when the report loads, the first dropdown populates just fine and does indeed have the default value " N/A" but the other two dropdowns are grayed-out. Until you change the first dropdown (to anything, apparently it doesn't matter what you change it to) the other two stay grayed-out. When the first is changed, the other two are populated and default to the desired " N/A" default value.

Why would it do this, when it didn't do it before; i.e. when the default for all of them was simply null. The dropdowns are not dependent on each other; they don't depend on other parameters for their values. Any help would be appreciated.

Special Characters In A Dropdown List

Nov 2, 2006

I have a web form that needs to be bilingual. It contains several dropdown lists. The "text" and "value" for each item in the dropdown list is retrieved from a database. The logic reads the database and then populates the various dropdowns with logic such as:

dim newItem as new ListItem(textString, valueString)

theDropDown.items.add(newItem)

The problem that I am having occurs when the textString needs to contains special characters such as accented vowels or an "n" with a tilde. I have tried populating the database with HTML-formatted strings such as "Avión", hoping that this would display "Avion" with an accute accent over the "o". Unfortunately it displays "Avión".

How do I get dynamically-created dropdowns to display special characters? If the answer is to simply store the special characters directly in the database, then the question becomes how do I get the special characters into the database? I tried to figure out how to write a T-SQL command such as

update tablex set SpanishName = 'Avion' where id=999

but I can't figure out the syntax to insert an accented 'o' into the string.

Thanks.

Firefox In Mac Fails To Render Scrollbar In The Multi-value Parameter Dropdown List Generated By ReportViewer.

Mar 10, 2008

Our clients working with the Firefox browser on a Mac are unable to use the Multi-Value parameter drop down lists that the Report Viewer control generates. Of course I realize that the multi-select dropdown lists are not really dropdown option lists using the standard HTML select tag, but are rather tables within div tags with cells that contain spans, inputs, and labels.

Originally the report viewer displayed these lists in the wrong position within Firefox on any platform (Mac or PC). Furthermore, there were other visibility problems with those lists that made it virtually impossible to select a checkbox within the list. Fortunately, Microsoft fixed this problem with the latest version of Report Viewer, which we downloaded from the following link:
http://207.46.19.190/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cc96c246-61e5-4d9e-bb5f-416d75a1b9ef&displaylang=en

So currently we have SQL Reporting Services Report Viewer 9.0.21022.8 installed on our web server. And the dropdown lists do appear as expected, and they work properly in Firefox on a PC.

But, when the control is rendered in Firefox on a Mac, the list is not scrollable. The scroll bar that should appear on the right-hand side of the dropdown list, which would enable users to select values toward the bottom of the list, does not appear. That scrollbar is missing in Firefox.

This is likely related to a Firefox rendering issue with the overflow:auto style. There are numerous entries on the web that indicate Firefox for Mac has a problem with overflow:auto. For example:
http://www.webdeveloper.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-96958.html
http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread44144.html
http://iamthewalr.us/blog/2007/04/20/firefox-on-the-mac/#comment-2321
http://www.errorforum.com/mozilla-firefox-error/3503-will-float-mac-firefox-scrollbars-floating-pop-up-windows.html
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?query_format=specific&order=relevance+desc&bug_status=__open__&id=187435

That being the case, it seems that there should be some workaround to address this, either via a style or through some alternate control. Or perhaps there is a property that we can apply to the ReportViewer control that I'm unaware of which addresses this.

If you know of a workaround, or can suggest an alternate approach that we could implement quickly, please respond. Thanks.

Populate DB Field From List In “storage DB

Aug 10, 2006

I am fairly new to SQL programming and would like to see if you can provide me with some direction on a small project I would like to accomplish. I have experience working with databases (mainly in with different versions of FoxPro) and reporting with Crystal reports, etc. but not much with SQL.

The project that I would like to work on has 2 SQL DBs and entails looking in a database for empty CLASSCODE fields, populate these fields from a “storage database that contains un-used CLASSCODE codes and delete the assigned codes from the storage DB or mark them as used possibly the book code.

The main DB called books has the following relevant fields, bookid, bookname, CLASSCODE (besides a number of other fields which are irrelevant to what I need to do). The “storage DB called classcode has 3 fields, CLASSCODE, Used (single character intended to contain either a Y or NULL) and date assigned. The original idea was to put a Y in the used field and insert the date the code was assigned to a book, but this is not entirely necessary, we have 90k unused codes and it really does not matter if they are simply deleted from the DB.

My idea is to create a script to accomplish this that I can run periodically when new books have been added to the DB. I can setup the update routine (something like the list below) but what I am stuck with is trying to do the following:

Pick the first record (classcode) from the classcode DB
Go to the books DB and update it with this classcode
Go back to the classcode DB and mark the used record with a Y in the Used field
Loop though the books DB and perform the same operation until no more records exist with an empty classcode field.

I will greatly appreciate your feedback you can provide.

Mike.

UPDATE [dbo].[Books]
SET dbo.Books.Classcode = [dbo].[classcode].[classcode]
From dbo.classcode
On [dbo].[Books].[classcode]= [NULL]

Populate DB field from list in “storage DB

Populate Parameter List With Caption From One Attribute And Value From Another Using MDX

Dec 7, 2007

I have a units conversion table. I'd like to populate the parameter drop down with the name of the unit and have the value selected be the numrical value found in a different attribute.

Here is my current MDX:

WITH MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterCaption] AS '[Dim Units].[Units].CURRENTMEMBER.MEMBER_CAPTION' MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterValue] AS '[Dim Units].[Units].CURRENTMEMBER.UNIQUENAME' MEMBER [Measures].[ParameterLevel] AS '[Dim Units].[Units].CURRENTMEMBER.LEVEL.ORDINAL'

SELECT {[Measures].[ParameterCaption], [Measures].[ParameterValue], [Measures].[ParameterLevel]} ON COLUMNS , [Dim Units].[Units].ALLMEMBERS ON ROWS FROM ( SELECT ( STRTOSET(@DimSalesTypeDescription, CONSTRAINED) ) ON COLUMNS FROM [Heidtman DW])

Units Parameter Caption Parameter Value Parameter Level
(null) All [Dim Units].[Units].[All] 0
Gross Ton Gross Ton [Dim Units].[Units].&[Gross Ton] 1
Hundred Weight Hundred Weight [Dim Units].[Units].&[Hundred Weight] 1

I can't seem to get different attribute to show up for ParameterValue.

Also, is there a way to NOT include the "all" member? For what I am trying to do it would have no meaning.

Thanks.
