I'm reading a lot of data from a database using SqlDataReader. Now I'd like to report the progress to the user, but for this I need to know in advance how many items SqlDataReader will return.
Is there any way to get this 'number of expected results' from the SqlDataReader?

I have 2 tables. Product, ProductCategory.
Product table consists of (productid, productname, producttypeid, createdate, portid)
productcategory consists of (productid, categoryid, productcategoryid, categoryid, prodroletypeid, createdate)
I want to write sql query to get the unique products. So the count should only give one value/resuls. But when I run the following query, I am getting more than one rows

The SQL I wrote:

I would also like to get another set of results with the same format but from date,ID and P fields:

Group by date
The problem with that is if I have thousands of ID in MyTable I have to "hard code" thousands times and the same problem with the fields/columns. Is there any easier way to do this?
I also would like to insert the results into a table/view which will be refreshed whenever MyTable gets updated.

I am/have been having an issue with Data Access from a Sql Server database. I have a class that contains a method called "GetDataReader" which takes in a string for the query. Occasionally, the DataReader returned has completely different columns thus resulting in an error when trying to read the data. My full-text search isn't working at all! I have a temporary table with full-text indexing enabled where files are scanned for social security numbers. If it has one, the user will see a message that it believes it's found a SSN and won't upload it. There is only ever one row in this table, as we overwrite the contents upon each upload.
I'm testing this search, and it doesn't work. The table has the following columns:
attachemtId (int) - primary key
fileContent (image) - contents of the file
fileExtension (varchar) - extension of the file (this is always either ".pdf" or ".doc")
I created a .doc file that simply says "ssn", and then run the following query:
SELECT * FROM TempAttachment
WHERE CONTAINS(fileContent,'ssn')
and nothing is returned! I tried the same thing with a .pdf file, and same results.
I'm not sure if this is related, but earlier I had this issue where I had to reset permissions for the directory. I've tried removing the full-text index and adding it again, but that didn't do anything. I also checked error logs on the server, and there were no messages. Any help would be appreciated! We are using SqlServer 2008 R2 version on all servers.
We can use comparison operators with strings as well. Hence, I tried to use the following query on a SQL Server 2012 instance with the sample AdventureWorks2012 database (the collation of the database and of the column is the default:

Two tables: CompanyPrices(CompanyID, ProductID, Price), CompanyRegion(CompanyID, Region)
ProductID is the primary key.
I want to get 10 smallest prices in each Region. In other words, I am looking for 10 cheapest prices in each region. So, if there are 20 regions, I should get excatly 200 rows having prices for products from 200 companies if there were at least 10 companies in each region.
I tried the follwoing, but get incorrect results.

Currently have a LicenseID table with a Software column...the statement that works on it's own that i've got is:
SELECT * FROM Software WHERE LicensesID = 2
Currently when I run that with the data so far I get 4 results returned to me...how can I add to that statement so that instead of displaying the results themselves, I just get the number 4 returned as a total number of results?

this is my sql query with access:

However, problem is, I am clueless about how to access the data that is derived from my count(*).
I tried this: Response.Write(reader2("total"))
All I get is that No data exists for the row/column.
I tried not to select oDate and even took away the WHERE, but the same problem persists. Any ideas please?
Iam using front page to dispalay my results.
At the bottom it shows me 1/10 i.e 1st page of 10 pages.
but what do i do if i want it to be shown as 1-10 out of 100 (if each page contains 10 results).
or it would be really good if i get count of both no. of recors as well as no. of pages.
I have a table that seems to have a bad index. When I do the followingquery I get inconsistant and needless to say incorrect results.select count(*) from mytable where mycolumn = 1If I remove the index from "mycolumn" the query works correctly. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an aggregate transform that outputs two columns, a group by (DT_STR) and a count(column name) (DT_UI8). The results are put into a Recordset Destination. When I attempt to map these columns to variables in a Foreach Loop Container (using a Foreach ADO Enumerator), I get the error:
Error: 0xC001F009 at ExtractNNRPersonUpdates: The type of the value being assigned to variable "User::NNRPersonCount" differs from the current variable type. Variables may not change type during execution. Variable types are strict, except for variables of type Object.
Error: 0xC001C012 at Foreach Household Loop Container: ForEach Variable Mapping number 2 to variable "User::NNRPersonCount" cannot be applied.
The variable mentioned in the error message is setup as a UInt64. I've tried all other integer data types and nothing works. I also tried changing the data type of the count coming out of the Aggregate transform but received a warning stating this isn't possible.
Any idea what I may be doing wrong?

These separate COUNT queries are very fast:

But I want to add the COUNT statements, so this is what I did:

I have come across a situation with two tables, they are dynamic and the user can add and edit values in the tables so I need to build a dynamic display control. It is all based around an FAQ system I have built. The user can create new FAQ categories (that is one table) then create a new FAQ Question & Answer (that is the second table). The tables are linked by the category id. So now I am trying to display the FAQ section like so.

So my idea was to run a loop within a loop. First loop the category name, then within the category name, loop a second time to grab all of the questions & answers within the category id captured from the first loops sql select statement, then proceed to loop the category name again and of course repeat the process until all loops are completed. i'm using c# and SqlDataReader to simply retrieve data from one column of a database. problem is it's an integer i'm trying to retrieve, and so i'm trying to put it into an int variable, and i get the error "CS0029: Cannot implicitly convert type 'object' to 'int'" . i've looked for an answer for about an hour and every example for the SqlDataReader that i can find deals with strings only or the examples are too complex for me to understand.
there must be an easy way to retrieve this data and put it into an integer! help...
my line of code that creates the error:

I have the following

SELECT @tmpCount returns nothing. The RIGHT(....) function does not render any results. I am expecting '0006'.
I read that the data type must be compatible with varchar. The @cLastBarcode was declare as char(25). I have even tried casting the @cLastBarcode char string to type varchar.
Any hints?

I did a trace on a production DB for many hours, and got more than 7 million of "RPC:Completed" and "SQL:BatchCompleted" trace records. Then I grouped them and obtained only 545 different events (just EXECs and SELECTs), and save them into a new workload file.
To test the workload file, I run DTA just for 30 minutes over a restored database on a test server, and got the following:

Please note that only 80 of the 545 events were tuned and 20% of improvement is expected if 15 indexes and 50 statistics are created.
Then, I run the same analysis for an unlimited amount of time... After the whole weekend, DTA was still running and I had to stop it. The result was:

This time DTA processed all the events, but no improvement is expected! Neither indexes/statistics creation recomendation.
It does not seem that Tuning Advisor crashed... Usage reports are fine and make sense to me.
What's happening here? It looks like DTA applied the recomendations and iterated, but no new objects where found in DB.
I guess that recomendations from the first try with only 80 events were invalidated by the remaining from the long run.
I couldn't google an answer for this. Help!!!

My first foray into the SQL CLR world is a simple function to return the size of a specified file.
I created the function in VS2005, where it works as expected.
Running the function in SSMS, however, returns a value of zero, regardless of the file it is pointed at.
Here's the class member code:

This always returns zero with no error displayed. Running Profiler was little help and there's not much in the Event Log.
The function returns correct values in VS2005.
The assembly is created with UNSAFE because using EXTERNAL_ACCESS resulted in a security error that prevented the assembly from being created, let alone running. Security is, I suspect, at the root of this issue as well, but I'm not sure what or where to look to verify this.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Is this expected behavior?
So I€™m at a dead-end looking for the reason behind the following behavior. Just to make sure no one misses it, the 'behavior' is the difference in the number of reads between using sp_executesql and not.
The following statements are executed against a SQL 2000 database that contains >1,000,000 records in the act_item table. They are run using Query Analyzer and the Duration and Reads come from SQL Profiler
SQL 1:

Random information:
Activity_code is an indexed field on the table, although it is not the primary key. There are a total of four indexes on the table, none of which include the priority as one of the fields.
There are two triggers on the table, neither of which is executed for this SQL statement (there is an IF UPDATE(fieldname) surrounding the code in the trigger)
There are no foreign relationships
I checked (using perfmon) to see if a compilation/recompilation was happening. No it's not.
Any suggestions as to avenues that could be examined would be appreciated.
