Possible To Restore From Remote Drive
Aug 26, 1998
Our production database is located on one server, and our test database resides on another. Often, we need to restore the production dump to the test database. But the Restore Device from Server window doesn`t seem to allow references to dump files on a different server. I`ve tried using the Add Backup Disk File window to point to the remote location; but it doesn`t seem to save the reference when I close the window.
I`m sure there`s a way to handle this without copying the dump file from one server to the other.
This would seem to be a common scenario. Thanks for any suggestions that others have found useful.

I have an SSIS package which accesses a map UNC path drive. It works fine when I run SSIS from Visual Studio. However, when I run this from a SQL Server job, it gives an error.
I am not allowed to use xp_cmdshell due to security reasons. If someone can point me to right direction, that would be greatly appricated.
Thanks

Hello, everyone:
I want to write a query to check a remote shared drive. The shared drive is mapped as T drive in my local. I run the statement,
EXEC master.. xp_cmdshell 'DIR C:'
It works. If I change to T drive like,
EXEC master.. xp_cmdshell 'DIR T:'
It dosen't work and returns,
"The system cannot find the path specified."
But I run DIR T: in DOS prompt, it works.
Any help will be great appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

From my workstation (with SQL Server 7 Desktop Edition SP3), I seem unable to restore a database on my Server (SQL Server Standard Edition SP3). I am logged into both machines, and I am an Administrator on both machines. Using either a UNC or Mapped Drive (see below)
RESTORE DATABASE ogAEC FROM ogAECDump WITH REPLACE , RECOVERY , STATS
, MOVE 'AEC_Data' TO 'Og-sqlsrvrC-DriveMSSQL7DataogAEC_Data.MDF'
, MOVE 'AEC_Log' TO 'Og-sqlsrvrC-DriveMSSQL7DataogAEC_Log.LDF'
RESTORE DATABASE ogAEC FROM ogAECDump WITH REPLACE , RECOVERY , STATS
, MOVE 'AEC_Data' TO 'Q:MSSQL7DataogAEC_Data.MDF'
, MOVE 'AEC_Log' TO 'Q:MSSQL7DataogAEC_Log.LDF'
I get
Server: Msg 3156, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
The file 'Og-sqlsrvrC-DriveMSSQL7DataogAEC_Data.MDF' cannot be used by RESTORE. Consider using the WITH MOVE option to identify a valid location for the file.
But I am successful if I run the essentially command locally from the server:
RESTORE DATABASE ogAEC FROM ogAECDump WITH REPLACE , RECOVERY , STATS
, MOVE 'AEC_Data' TO 'C:MSSQL7DataogAEC_Data.MDF'
, MOVE 'AEC_Log' TO 'C:MSSQL7DataogAEC_Log.LDF'
What can I do to be able to restore DBs from my workstation?

Hello all
as indicated by my stupid question, I am very new to sql. our vrsion is 2000 and I'm talking about in enterprise manager, the database that was created is not showing up in the list of db. Although I can see the file in explorer.
The problem I€™m having is when I try to attach the database €œmailarchive3Q2007_data.mdf€? it is also looking for the log file €œmailarchive3Q2007_log.ldf€? . The log file was removed by someone else off our system. I have a backup of the file but it is too large to restore now (160 gig) when the system was first set up the recovery model was not set to simple so the log just grew till it filled up our drive. I no longer have the drive space necessary to restore the log file and shrink it. So what do I do now? I need some kind of €œmailarchive3Q2007_log.ldf€? file to attach the database in enterprise manager.
Hope sombody can help.
thanks

Hi,all.
I tried to issue:
sp_attach_db pubs,'F:anthonypubs.mdf','F:anthonypubs.ldf'
where the pubs.mdf and pubs.ldf are on a remote mapped drive F:,
I got error:
Server: Msg 5105, Level 16, State 4, Line 1
Device activation error. The physical file name 'f:anthonypubs.ldf' may
be incorrect.
Is attaching a database ONLY supported for local servers ??
What about creating database on remote drive? (I have same error msg back)
Thx

We are attempting to restore one of our databases from a backup that went to a local drive on the server.
We see the backupset in the list but receive an error that it is not available when we try to use it. When we try to restore from device and select the files the drive letter is not available. When we attempt to enter the path to the file it can't locate it. We don't have space on our SAN to copy the backup there and we can't add the local drive to the cluster resources.
Is there a way to get this backup done?

I want to restore a huge database into my workstation. The size of the backup file is more than 6 GB and I don't have enoughspace on my HD for both the database and the backup file.So I put the file in a shared folder on a pc connected through a switchto my pc.My wkst uses w2k pro sp4, the other PC win xp home SP1. MSDE 2000.The share is visible and RW for the administrator of my wkst. The 2 pc are in the same workgroup and are not part of a domain.I tried to restore using this code:RESTORE DATABASE MydbFROM DISK='\uncpath ofile.bak'WITH ...and get the error 3201 and in the log:"BackupDiskFile::OpenMedia: the backup peripheral'\uncpath ofile.bak' could not open. Error in O.S. = 5(AccessDenied.). " (I'm translating form italian)I read that the problem can arise from the fact that the restoration isexecuted by a sql server "user" that has not the same permissions as theadministrator. I tried to assign to the SQLSERVERAGENT service the useradministrator with no avail. And executing:xp_cmdshell 'dir \uncpath ofile.bak'gives the error "access denied".Is there a solution to this problem?Otherwise how can I restore a database whose backup has almost the samesize as the free space on the disk?thank youmaxx--NOSPAM: Rimuovere i trattini dallo username!Cut hyphens from my username!

Or is there a way to convert a Database into a long set of Transact SQL statements that I can run on the remote server (ala MySQL's MySQLDump)?
Thanks

Sorry if this is elementary, but I have searched and cannot find an answer.
I have a backup file of a sql server 2000 database. I want to restore it to a remote hosted sql server 2005.
Using sql server management studio, it seems to me that I cannot access the files stored local on my computer.
Does anybody have a solution?
What is the best way to deploy my backup file to the remote server?
Thanks for any suggestions!

I am working on a project for an SQL job. I am:
1.) Taking a database out of an availability group,
2.) Setting the recovery to simple,
3.) Shrinking the log file,
4.) Setting the recovery mode back to full,
5.) Then backing it up.
I need to restore the file to my secondary server with replace and non recovery mode. I am having trouble performing that call? I have the code to reestablish the database to the availability group if I can get the restore feature working.Â

FYI: I've posted this on a couple of forums and haven't gotten any response. I hope someone here can help since this is way past due.
First I'll give a little background on our situation.
Log Shipping and Replication are out, so I am scripting a backup locally, an xcopy to a remote box, and then a restore.
In the early stages of this, I'm trying to do 3 databases. 2 of them work fine alone. It's when I add the 3rd one that I have a problem. I noticed that in the 2nd stored procedure that I probably need to take out the WITH REPLACE if I'm dropping it beforehand as well. I don't have time to test it on this box until later tonight. I don't think that's the issue because it was doing the same thing before I added the drop. I'm overwriting the .txt file so I don't have the exact error that it's giving. I believe it's something similar to "Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1, Line 0 General network error. Check your network documentation." I believe it also said [SQLSTATE 42000].
Now for the code. Props to Tara and the code she's put online.
Any help would be appreciated and I'll be glad to help answer questions related to what I've got.

Hi
I have been trying to use openrowset with a shared drive, and even though the share has "full control" permissions granted to "everyone" and the accout that SQL runs under has been granted explicit full control permissions I am unable to open the file which itself has no security on it.
Can I not use a \ path and only use mapped drives?
Thanks
below works...
SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','Excel 8.0;Database=C:5People.xls', [Sheet1$])
below doesn't work...
SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','Excel 8.0;Database=\cluster02FileManager5People.xls', [Sheet1$])

I am trying to move a log file from one drive to another.
What I have done is add another file to my file group. So now my log has a file on the 'e' drive and one on the 'f' drive. I now want to remove the file on the 'e' drive. I have emptied the file on the 'e' drive. When doing the command:
ALTER DATABASE Uniprodruntime
REMOVE FILE m_rk_runtime_log
I get the following error message..
Server: Msg 5020, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The primary data or log file cannot be removed from a database.
I have also gone into enterprise manager and tried to delete the file and it does nothing.
Has anyone run into this?

I am looking for a SQL Backup/Restore tools which can restore multiple environments. Here is high level requirements.
1. We have 4 DBs, range from 1 TB - 1.5 TB Each Database. When we restore to QA, DEV, or Staging, we usually restore 4 of them.
2. I am looking for the speed to complete restoring between 1 - 2 hours for 4 DBs.
I am evaluating the Dephix Software but the setup is very complex and its given us a lot of issues with Windows Authentions, and failure in the middle of the backup. I used Guess Software many years ago but can't find it on the web site any more. Speed is very important for us mean complete restoring as fast as possible. We are on SQL 2012 and SQL 2008 R2.We are currently using NETAPP Technology and I have Redgate Backup Tool but I am mainly looking for fast Restore Process.

I am trying to add a linked server from a AMD x64 server (Windows 2003) with SQL Server 2005 64 bit to a Server running SQL 2000. These are not in the same domain.
I can create a linked server using the option "Be made using the login's current security context" but can not when trying to specify the security context, i.e. sa and the sa password. When I try I get the following message:
Msg 15185, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_addlinkedsrvlogin, Line 98
There is no remote user 'sa' mapped to local user '(null)' from the remote server 'DTS_FSERVER'.
I have several other x64 server that I have no problem creating a linked server and specifying sa and the sa password.
The problem with using "the login's current security context" option is that I get an error when trying to run any Jobs against the linked server. The job fails withe the following error:
Executed as user: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM. Access to the remote server is denied because no login-mapping exists. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 7416). The step failed.
I'm sure the two errors are related. Any ideas what is going on?
