Pricing Of A SQL Server Clustering Solution

Jul 20, 2005

I understand that to implement SQL Server clustering solution, it is
necessary to have Win 2K Advanced server. We are looking at 2Node
failover solution on a 2CPU Pentium box. Is there a site where we
can find out the cost of Win2K and SQL server for this configuration.

Thanks.

Need To Adjust Pricing Without Affecting Old Pricing

Mar 4, 2004

Our database creates proposals, work orders, and purchase orders. Each of those systems pulls from the same price list. I need to be able to adjust pricing for products without affecting the proposals, work orders, and purchase orders. Does anybody know how to steer me in this direction?

SQL Server Pricing

May 8, 2006

If this is not the best place for this question perhaps someone can direct me to the right place. Please do not send me to a knowledge base article as this does not really help.

I come from a Sybase background. I have the potential to direct various companies that need client/server applications to SQL Server but it is not clear to me (even vaugely) what it is going to cost them. These businesses have maybe 20 to 50 PC's that might need to access data on a SQL Server database. This will almost always be done through an application like Visual Studio .NET. The number of people that will actually need to go into SQL Server Management Studio may be only 1 or 2.

Given the above, can someone tell me, roughly, what the Microsoft costs are going to be for the company? I think they can get by with Standard edition. I don't think they need anything more fancy than that.

SOLUTION! - VB.NET 2005 Express And SQL Server 2005 - NOT Saving Updates To DB - SOLUTION!

Nov 30, 2006

VB.NET 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express - NOT saving updates to DB - SOLUTION!

-----------------------------------

The following article is bogus and confusing:

How to: Manage Local Data Files - Setting 'Copy to Output Directory' to 'Do not copy'
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms246989.aspx

You must manually copy the database file to the output directory
AFTER setting 'Copy to Output Directory' to 'Do not copy'.

Do not copy

The file is never copied or overwritten by the project system. Because your application creates a dynamic connection string that points to the database file in the output directory, this setting only works for local database files when you manually copy the file yourself.

You must manually copy the database file to the output directory
AFTER setting 'Copy to Output Directory' to 'Do not copy'.

-----------------------------------

The above article is bogus and confusing.

This is rediculous!

This is the most vague and convoluted bunch of nonsince I've ever come accross!

Getting caught out on this issue for the 10th time!
And not being able to find an exact step-by-step solution.

--------------------------

I've tried it and it doesn't work for me.

Please don't try what the article eludes to as I'm still sorting out exactly what is supposed to be happening.

If you have a step-by-step procedure that can be reproduced this properly please PM me.

I would like to test its validity then update this exact post as a solution rather than just another dicussion thread.

Many thanks.

This is the exact procedure I have come up with:

NOTE 1: DO NOT allow VB.net to copy the database into its folders/directorys.

NOTE 2: DO NOT hand copy the database to a folder/directory in your project.

Yes, I know its hard not to do it because you want your project nice and tidy.
I just simply could NOT get it to work.
You should NOT have myData.mdf listed in the Solution Explorer. Ever.

Create a folder for your data following NOTE 2.

Copy your data to that folder. * mine was C:mydatamyData.mdf

Create a NEW project.

Remove any Data Connections. ( no matter what)

Save it.

Data | View Data Sources

Add New Data Source

select NEW CONNECTION ( No Matter what, do it!

Select the database. * again mine was C:mydatamyData.mdf

Answer NO to the question:
Would you like to copy the file to your project and modify the connection?
- NO ( no matter what - ANSWER NO ! - Absolutely NO )
Then select the tables you want in the DataSet.
and Finish.

To Test ----------

From the Solution Explorer | click the table name drop down arrow | select details
Now Drag the table name onto the form.

The form is then populated with a Navigation control
and matching Labels with corresponding Textboxes for each field in the table.

Save it.

1) Run the app.

Add one database record to the database by pressing the Add(+) icon

Just add some quick junk data that you don't mind getting lost if it doesn't save.

YOU MUST CLICK THE SAVE ICON to save the data you just entered.

Now exit the application.

2) Run the app again.

And verify there is one record already there.

Now add a second database record to the database by pressing the Add (+) icon.

NOW add some quick junk data that you WILL intentionally loose.

*** DO NOT *** press the save icon.

Just Exit the app.

3) Again, Run the app.

Verify that the first record is still there.

Verify that the Second record is NOT there.
Its NOT there because you didn't save the data before exiting the app.

Proving that YOU MUST CLICK THE SAVE ICON to save the data you just entered.

Also proving you must add your own code to catch the changes
and ask the user to save the data before exitiing or moving to another record.

As a side note, since vb.net uses detached datasets,
(a copy/snapshot of the dataset in memory and NOT directly linked to the database)
the dataset will reflect all changes made when moving around the detached datasets.
YOU MUT REMEMBER TO SUBMIT YOUR CHANGES TO THE DATABASE TO SAVE THEM.
Otherwise, they will simply be discarded without notice.

Whewh!

I hope this saves me some time the next time I want to start a new database project.

Oh, and uh, for anyone else reading this post.

Thanks,

SQL License And Pricing Question

Aug 15, 2006

Hello,

We currently are running SQL 7 Enterprise Edition on a Windows 2000 server. We are looking to move upto the 2005 edition but do not see the need for Enterprise edition as we use the database server for websites only. We currently have about 60 databases and 60 users on our server. Connecting are 5 web servers. So for the licensing and what not would I need to get 5 devices cals? Or is my only option the CPU license with the Enterprise edition?

Thanks,

Transfer A Database From Non-clustering To Clustering Env.

Nov 13, 2007

We have 2 env. : Testing and Production, both are running Windows 2003 Enterprise Server with SQL Server 2005. The difference is Testing is NOT running Windows cluster but Production do so, what is the best way to transfer a database from testing to production?

We have another systems that both testing and production are running on NON-cluster and we use backup/restore to transfer the database, can it apply in this case.

And I found that there are a tools called DTC, which can transfer all DB objects from one DB to another, is it a best way to transfer between non-cluster and cluster env.?

Clustering With NT/SQL Server

Those of you who are using MS Clustering, what are some advantages vs. a third party product such as "Double-Take" ? If you have used "Doube-Take" I would be extremely interested in your thought of the product.

Is it relatively easy to setup and configure with and environment
that's using all the standard products of BACKOFFICE (SQL Server 7.0 Standard Edition, NT 4.0 Standard Edition etc...)

Any hints, tips, etc... would be also GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

SQL Server Clustering

Jan 28, 2000

I have a question about database clustering. I am loking for the solution for the databse scalability, performance and zero downtime especially for MS SQL Server. As my understanding (correct if I am wrong), only Oracle provides 2 DB Servers (parallel server) or NT clustering for two sql servers. The drawback for these solution is only one server is working and another one is standing by. It is not efficent (which only 50%). Is any way that I could built the DB server farm which every DB server is working, if one failed, throw it away, rest of them still working; if I need more power, just add another db server box.How to solve the data sync problem ? Replication is not good for more than 4 or 5 db servers in the farm. Disk mirror is not good since if the server is down, there is no way to access the disks. DO you have any good idea ?

Is SQL Server CE Really The Solution?

Jan 11, 2007

Hi,

So far, with other programming platforms, I used to have the facility, embedded within application .exe, to:

1- Interface with already existing "multi-user" database (ex: Oracle, Access, etc.)

2- Create/access "local"/"Single-User" files for processing purposes.  (try to minimize network trafic...)

So far, I've read a lot about SQL Server products (SQL Server, Sql Server Express, SQL Server CE), at least all articles I could find, and would like to have your opinion on what would be the best approach?

1- What SQL version to use for "multi-user" databases?

2- What SQL version to use for "single-user" databases/files?

3- Can SQL Express allow me to achieve both "multi-user" and "single-user" approaches within same app?  If not, what would you rather suggest?

Thanks in advance,

Stéphane

SQL Server Clustering

Mar 7, 2008

Hello,

Will removing the built in administrator account from the sql server cluster have any related problem with failover happening. Is it ok if i add the domain account under which sql server runs and add it to the local administrators box of both the nodes. I was thinking of not allowing the built in administrator account to access the sql server. Thought adding only the account under which the sql server service runs is enough which is also a domain account with local administrator privileges on both the nodes of the cluster.

Appreciate any reply back.

Sorry if I had posted it on the wrong forum.

Thanks!

Sql Server Agent And Clustering

Jan 29, 2003

I have recently inherited an active/passive cluster. Sql server agent mail is sending notifications, but I haven't figured out how - yet. The active node is setup to start the mssqlservice with a domain acct. that is a local admin on the machine, but the agent is setup to start with the local system acct. The domain acct. has an exchange profile on the server. It was my understanding that the agent and the sqlserver service had to run under the same id for this to work? Are the ids listed under services on the primary node the ids that actually run the services - or are the services run by a different id? If so, can someone point me in the right direction?

Clustering SQL Server 2000

Jan 21, 2004

Environment:
SQL Server 2000 SP3a on W2K Advanced Server SP4.
1 IBM Server x440 with FastT700 Storage (Fibre Channel)

We need to buy another IBM Server x440 or x445 and we would like to make a cluster.
Question 1:
Once we build the Cluster with the installation of the Cluster Service, making the W2K Cluster, is it possible to upgrade the default instance of SQL Server to a default clusterd instance of SQL Server?
In BOL I have found a note that explain how to do this but I have some doubts.

When I installed SQL Server I placed the system files on the C: drive, the DB files on our SAN on disk E: and the log files on disk F:.

Question 2:
If we would like to use Windows Server 2003 what would be the possibility for an upgrade?
I mean, should I erase all and start with Windows Server 2003 setup or can you suggest to upgrade the OS first, from W2K Advanced Server, and then cluster SQL Server if possible?

Can you advice please?
Any help is really appreciated.
Thank you very much for your time.

Sql Server 2000 Clustering

If we have a stateful connection (RDS) and the database fails how will the application reconnect. I do not believe that our application was written using MSCS API. So, my question is can the application work with sql server clustering since it uses stateful connections? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Solution Explorer And SQL Server

Dec 12, 2005

I am a Visual Studio .net developer and understand Solutions and Projects in VS.net.  Nevertheless, it appears that the paradigm of using Solutions Explorer in SQL Server is not exactly the same.  That is, in Visual Studio you can't get anything done without creating a solution first.  In SQL Server, it is entirely possible to get a lot done without a solution and the ability to create and make use of a solution seems almost an after thought or an add-on.
I am particularly interested in using a solution in SQL Server to allow me to make use of SourceSafe.  In the past, we jumped through all kinds of hoops to keep a running trail of changes we had made to (for example) stored procedures.  It appears now that this can be managed more efficiently with the use of a Solution and SourceSafe and saving scripts or .sql files.  I guess it is not possible to save a pristine copy of a stored procedure directly in SourceSafe, but you can save the code that makes up the stored procedure as a .SQL file which I suppose is about as good.
Anyway, what I would like to know is whether there is a good white paper (or chapter in a book) on the philosophy behind Solutions and projects in SQL Server and how MS intends us to use them; perhaps something other than the cold facts from the documentation.  I would appreciate something more that gives me the big picture on just how MS sees them being used in SQL Server so I can get the most out of them.  I have the feeling that if I "get the vision", they are meant to be an integral part of SQL Server now and in the future.

SQL Server 2005 Upgrade To SP2 - SQL Server Service Not Starting - SOLUTION

Mar 15, 2007

I upgraded my SQL 2005 Workgroup 2005 to SP2 and subsequently could not get the SQL Server service running. Turns out this was a problem because I had created separate folders for my data and log files. The distmdl.mdf and mssqlsystemresource.mdf files were in my data folder and distmdl.ldf and mssqlsystemresource.ldf were in my log folder. During SP2 upgrade a new distmdl.ldf and mssqlsystemresource.ldf were created in my data folder. I deleted the distmdl.ldf and mssqlsystemresource.ldf files in my log folder and then moved the newly created ones in my data folder into the log folder and all is well now.

Just a heads up!
