View 1 RepliesOk I know this might not be the most accurate place to post this but I know someone here has an answer for me on it.I need to get the product_ID of the new record that is created by this insert statement INSERTINTO products ( class_ID,category_ID,product_name,product_desc,product_image,product_dimension,product_o1,product_o2,product_o3,product_ac,product_ph,product_photo ) SELECT class_ID,category_ID,product_name,product_desc,product_image,product_dimension,product_o1,product_o2,product_o3,product_ac,product_ph,product_photo FROM productsWHERE product_ID = @productID

I have a table in sql server with a numeric field as Primary Key. When i insert a new record i need that primary key increments automatic (like access auto increment) because i want avoid the possibility of duplicate Primary Keys.
Is that possible?
Thank you
Visual Basic 2005 Express:
I want to retrieve an SQL DataBase table record whose primary key is 4.
How do I read in that record and how do I pick up data from it?
Hi,
Can someone please tell me the best practices for checking the primary key field before inserting a record into my database?
As an example I have created an asp.net page using VB with an SQL server database. The web page will just insert two fields into a table (Name & Surname into the Names table). The primary key or the Names table is "Name". When I click the Submit button I would like to check to ensure there is not a duplicate primary key. If there is return a user friendly message i.e. A record already exisits, if there no duplicate, add the record.
I guess I could use try, catch within the .APSX page or would a stored procedure be better?
Thanks
Brett
hii I have to insert some data into a table from the webpage. For that I need to know the last occurred value in the primary key and increment this by one and then insert the new record into the table. I am working with SQL Server 2005. I am coding in VB and ASP.NET 2.0. How will I go about this?? Is there some easy way for me to knw the last value of the primary key n then insert the record. It would be great if I get the idea more clear with the help of some code... Thanks
View 2 Replies View RelatedCan someone explain what happens when two users concurrently attempt tocreate a new record in a table with an autonumber primary key? For example,user 1 creates a new record and manipulates it within a transaction makinguse (perhaps) of the @@IDENTITY value when creating other, related records.Before this transaction is complete, user 2 creates a new record and doesthe same thing. Presumably they will both have the same @@IDENTITY? Ifthis is the case, how is it possible to manage such a situation?Thanks.

We have a large table which is very old and not much ppl take care about, recently there is a performance problem from the report need to query to this table. Eventally we find that this table have primary key missing and there is duplicate data which make "alter table add primary key" don't work
Besides the data size of this table require unacceptable time to execute something like "insert into new_table_with_pk from select distinct * from old table"
Do you have any recommendation of fixing this? As the application run on oracle , sybase and sql server, is that cross database approace will work?
Previously same records exists in table having primary key and table having foreign key . we have faced 7 records were lost from primary key table but same record exists in foreign key table.

I have a table with a user column and other columns. User column id the primary key.
I want to create a copy of the record where the user="user1" and insert that copy in the same table in a new created record. But I want the new record to have a value of "user2" in the user column instead of "user1" since it's a primary key
Thanks.
Hey all!
Sorry for the less then descriptive post title but I didn't find a better way to describe it. I'm developing an app in the express editions of VB and SQLserver. The application is a task/resource scheduler. The main form will have a datepicker or weekly overview and show all tasks scheduled per day. The problem is, I've got one or more people assigned to tasks and I wonder what's the best way to design this. Personally, I'd go for one Task table, a People table and a table that provides a link between them (several record per task, one for each person assigned linking TaskID and PplID). However, I don't see a nice way of showing this data to the end user, allowing him to edit/add etc on ONE screen.
To fix that the only way I see is just add columns to the Task table for every person with select boxes. This way everything can be done on one simple screen. This obviously does present some future issues.
On top of this, which people are available on a day varies and there should be an option to allow a user to set who is available on a specific day. Which would lead me to my first idea and add another table that would provide this. but then I'm having design issues again for the form.
I'm kinda stuck atm, can anyone shed some light on this. I'm sure there is an elegant way of doing this but I'm failing at finding it.
Thanks in advance,
Johan
Hi,
We're running a Sage CRM install with a SQL Server 2000 database at the back end. We're using the Sage web services API for updating data and a JDBC connection to retrieve data as it's so much quicker.
If I retrieve a record using the JDBC connection and then try and update the same record through the web services, the query times out as if the record is locked for updates. Has anyone experienced anything similar or know what I'm doing wrong? If I just use DriverManager.getConnection() to establish the connection instead of the datasource, and then continue with the same code I don't get these record locking problems. Please find more details below.
Thanks,
Sarah
The JDBC provider for the datasource is a WebSphere embedded ConnectJDBC for SQL Server DataSource, using an implementation type of 'connection pool datasource'. We are using a container managed J2C authentication alias for logging on.
This is running on a Websphere Application Server v6.1.
Code snippet - getting the record thru JDBC:
DataSource wsDataSource = serviceLocator.getDataSource("jdbc/dsSQLServer");
Connection wsCon = wsDataSource.getConnection();
// wsCon.setAutoCommit(false); //have tried with and without this flag - same results
Statements stmt = wsCon.createStatement();
String sql = "SELECT * FROM Person where personID = 12345";
ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery(sql);
if(rs.next()){
System.out.println(rs.getString("lastName"));
}
if (rs != null){
rs.close();
}
if (stmt != null) {
stmt.close();
}
if (wsCon != null) {
wsCon.close();
}
I am attempting to create a multi-record file (as described in my last thread) and have found the following set of instructions very helpful:
http://vsteamsystemcentral.com/cs21/blogs/steve_fibich/archive/2007/09/25/multi-record-formated-flat-file-with-ssis.aspx
I have been able to create a sample file with two of my record types.
I now need to build on this further, because I have 9 record types in total that need to be extracted to a single flat file.
does anyone have any ideas how I might extend the example above to include more record types or know of another means of achieving this?
Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide.
Just curios,
I have four 72 GB Drive on a RAID 5
Disk Specs
IO/Second = 130 per disk
Speed RPM = 15 K
When I did a load test of inserting data into a table
with four Columns
Col1 INT
Col2 VARCHAR(32)
Col3 VARCHAR(4000)
Col4 DATETIME
I could insert around 1044 Inserts per second where as
I thought I could do max of 520 Inserts ( 130 * 4 ) because
each disk can only take 130 Inserts multiplied by 4 Disks
gives me a theoritical limit of 520.
Also How does the Query Analyser Connects to the datbase
Server.. does it use ODBC

Hi All,I have a table in SQL Server 2000 that contains several million memberids. Some of these member ids are duplicated in the table, and eachrecord is tagged with a 1 or a 2 in [recsrc] to indicate where theycame from.I want to remove all member ids records from the table that have arecsrc of 1 where the same member id also exists in the table with arecsrc of 2.So, if the member id has a recsrc of 1, and no other record exists inthe table with the same member id and a recsrc of 2, I want it leftuntouched.So, in a theortetical dataset of member id and recsrc:0001, 10002, 20001, 20003, 10004, 2I am looking to only delete the first record, because it has a recsrcof 1 and there is another record in the table with the same member idand a recsrc of 2.I'd very much appreciate it if someone could help me achieve this!Much warmth,Murray

Hi,
I have recently been looking at a database and wondered if anyone can tell me what the advantages are supporting a unique collumn, which can essentially be seen as the primary key, with an identity seed integer primary key.
For example:
id [unique integer auto incremented primary key - not null],
ClientCode [unique index varchar - not null],
name [varchar null],
surname [varchar null]
isn't it just better to use ClientCode as the primary key straight of because when one references the above table, it can be done easier with the ClientCode since you dont have to do a lookup on the ClientCode everytime.

Mike
I'm using a SQLDataSource and trying to do two inserts into two different tables with one InsertCommand, but it's not working. Here's the code I'm trying to use. Do you see anything wrong with the syntax? I keep getting an error that says error near ',' but I can't figure out why. Thanks
InsertCommand="INSERT INTO [OurProjects] ([Title], [Description], [Location], [Anchors], [Size], [Developer], [DesignBuilder], [Architect], [ImageName], [MapName], [ProjectTypeAbbrev], [Deleted]) VALUES (@Title, @Description, @Location, @Anchors, @Size, @Developer, @DesignBuilder, @Architect, @ImageName, @MapName, @ProjectTypeAbbrev, @Deleted),
INSERT INTO [OurProjectsImages] ([OurProjectsID], [ImageMonthName], [SwfName]) VALUES (@OurProjectsID, @ImageMonthName, @SwfName)"
I need to Add a Check in the database to ensure that user can only enter up to 20 entries to Database in a period of 10 minutes. Basically, to guard against people using scripts to add data to the database ( instead of using CAPTCHAE on the front end) what we want to do is restrict user to entering at most 20 transactions in 10 Minutes.How do I handle or do this in SQl Server 2005??
What I figure to do is right after I do an INSERT into the table, I Select the last 20 entries into that same table and then Calculate the Total time it took to add those 20 transactions and set the righ flag.
1) How do I select last 20 entries into a table??
2) How do I calculate the total time that elapsed between adding the first of those 20 records and the last??
Thanks in Advance
G'day,
I have a table with a primary key being a bigint and its set to auto increment (or identity or whatever ms calls it). Is there anyway I can get the ID number that will be assigned to the next Insert before I insert it? I want to use that ID number within another field when inserted.
I hope that makes sense.
Thanks for any help.

Hi, I'm trying to create a form where new names can be added to a database. The webform looks like this:<body MS_POSITIONING="GridLayout"> <form id="Form1" method="post" runat="server"> Name:<asp:TextBox ID="newName" runat="server" /> <INPUT id="NewUserBtn" type="button" value="Create New User" name="NewUserBtn" runat="server" onServerClick="NewBtn_Click"> </form>And the code behind looks like this:Public Sub NewBtn_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles NewUserBtn.ServerClick Dim DS As DataSet Dim MyConnection As SqlConnection Dim MyCommand As SqlDataAdapter
MyConnection = New SqlConnection("server=databaseserver;database=db;uid=uid;pwd=pwd") MyCommand = New SqlDataAdapter("insert into certifications (name) values ('" & newName.Text & "'); select * from certifications", MyConnection)
DS = New DataSet MyCommand.Fill(DS, "Titles")
Response.Redirect("WebForm1.aspx", True) End SubWhen I try to insert one name it works. When I try to insert a second name, it overwrites the old one. Why is that?Thanks.James
Hey All,
I was trying to use a typed dataset to create a very simple DAL. I found that the code generated for the INSERT statement includes an identity field the table has. That can obviously never work (unless identity_insert is set, which it is not). My question is whether it is possible to control this insert statement generation? Is there a property I am missing somewhere? My solution was to change the INSERT statement on the DataTableAdapter, but that seems awkward for me to have to do that..
Thanks,
Yuval

View 2 Replies View RelatedWe have a 4 processor 350 Hz NT 4.0 SQL server. Currently we have an application
that is inserting rows one at a time, each row insert is a separate transaction.
Currenty we are averaging 2500 rows a second with each row ( 56 bytes wide).
The data and the log are on one string of Raid disk. We plan to get another controller
and raid string to separate the data and the log onto separate controllers.
The developer is modifying the application to insert the data in blocks. What is the
impact to the transaction log? He seems to think that by inserting page blocks on
rows there would be less data going into the transaction log. Why would this be so?
Does anyone have any information on practical limits for inserts and log truncation
with similar machine configurations. He would like to try to get around 150,000 rows a second.
Has anyone accomplished inserts at this rate? What type of machine configuration?
Hi,
I have a small web application managing complaints. During multiuser testing we noticed that when complaints where added at "exactly" the same time one complaint text seemed to be over writing the other, and returning the current max value for table id as current complaint number.
I tested in my development environment and was able to recreate reasonably easily ( 1 go out of 3 recreated the issue ). The Id column itself is an auto increment ( primary key ), so I can't think of a concievable reason why one record should overwrite another. I should say that I am assuming the record is overwritten, perhaps there is a clash and one complaint is ignored by the database.
Have anyone encountered this in the past?
Thanks
