Getting Query Is Accept Null Values

Mar 18, 2008

 I am trying to have a query with the option for items to be null. (So users don't need to fill in the other fields if they choose not too) SELECT     Tickets.TicketID, Tickets.UserID, Tickets.SystemID, Tickets.Title, Tickets.Description, Tickets.Software, Tickets.Date, Systems.OS,                       OS.OS AS OstitleFROM         Tickets INNER JOIN                      Systems ON Tickets.SystemID = Systems.SystemID INNER JOIN                      OS ON Systems.OS = OS.osIDWHERE     (Tickets.Title LIKE '%' + @title + '%') AND (Tickets.Software LIKE '%' + @software + '%') AND (Tickets.Description LIKE '%' + @descrip + '%') AND  (Systems.OS = @osid) OR                      (@osid IS NULL)This works when i give the LIKE values % as a parameter. So they can choose to search by title + software but not description or description and nothing else etc etc etc. The problem is, the osid. If I give it a value it works but if i try to do null, *. or % it always displays every item in the databse ignoring any of the previous like statements. Anyone have an idea?

I Can't Get A SQL QUery To Accept A Null For A Parameter

Mar 1, 2007

I have straight forward Insert Query, which takes values mainly from text boxes, however I am having trouble when the value is null.

eg
cmdP0.Parameters["@EmpID"].Value=txtEmpNo.Text;

When I run the Query I get...
Message="Parameterized Query '(@ID int,@EmpID int,@Photo nvarchar(260),@DoB smalldatetime,@Med' expects parameter @EmpID, which was not supplied."

I also get this when the parameter can be a string.
I have set the parameter properties so that SourceColumnNullMaping to true (it was set as false - so hoped this might fix it!)

No luck.

Compressing Multiple Rows With Null Values To One Row With Out Null Values After A Pivot Transform

Jan 25, 2008

I have a pivot transform that pivots a batch type. After the pivot, each batch type has its own row with null values for the other batch types that were pivoted. I want to group two fields and max() the remaining batch types so that the multiple rows are displayed on one row. I tried using the aggregate transform, but since the batch type field is a string, the max() function fails in the package. Is there another transform or can I use the aggragate transform another way so that the max() will work on a string?

Transact SQL :: Getting Primary Key Values As A List Of Values

I am trying to audit data quality based on some defined data quality rules. The rules are stored in tables and processed using stored procedures. I am facing a problem while generating audits. The table design is mentioned below...I inserted some sample data into the table using RedGate data generator.The audit table output I am expecting is as mentioned in the screenshot below

Its the PrimaryKeyAttributeValues column I am facing problems with. I am using STUFF function within a dynamic SQL query to get the primary key's as a list of comma separated values.

NULL Values Returned When Reading Values From A Text File Using Data Reader.

Feb 23, 2007

I have a DTSX package which reads values from a fixed-length text file using a data reader and writes some of the column values from the file to an Oracle table. We have used this DTSX several times without incident but recently the process started inserting NULL values for some of the columns when there was a valid value in the source file. If we extract some of the rows from the source file into a smaller file (i.e 10 rows which incorrectly returned NULLs) and run them through the same package they write the correct values to the table, but running the complete file again results in the NULL values error. As well, if we rerun the same file multiple times the incidence of NULL values varies slightly and does not always seem to impact the same rows. I tried outputting data to a log file to see if I can determine what happens and no error messages are returned but it seems to be the case that the NULL values occur after pulling in the data via a Data Reader. Has anyone seen anything like this before or does anyone have a suggestion on how to try and get some additional debugging information around this error?

Null Values For Datetime Values Converted To '0001-01-01'

Mar 29, 2006

Hi

can somebody explain me how I can assign a NULL value to a datetime type field in the script transformation editor in a data flow task.
In the script hereunder, Row.Datum1_IsNull is true, but still Row.OutputDatum1 will be assigned a value '0001-01-01' which generates an error (not a valid datetime). All alternatives known to me (CDate("") or Convert.ToDateTime("") or Convert.ToDateTime(System.DBNull.Value)) were not successful.
Leaving out the ELSE clause generates following error: Error: Year, Month, and Day parameters describe an un-representable DateTime.

If Not Row.Datum1_IsNull Then

Row.OutputDatum1 = Row.Datum1

Else

Row.OutputDatum1 = CDate(System.Convert.DBNull)

End If

Any help welcome.

Primary Key On Combination Of Nullable Fields, At Least One Not-null

Jul 23, 2005

I have a case where a table has two candidate primary keys,but either (but not both) may be NULL. I don't want to storea copy of the concatenated ISNULL'ed fields as an additionalcolumn, though that would work if necessary. Instead, I triedthe following (this is a related simplified example, not myreal one):CREATE FUNCTION ApplyActionPK(@IP int = NULL,@DNS varchar(64) = NULL)RETURNS varchar(74) -- NOT NULLASBEGINdeclare @val varchar(74)set @val = str(ISNULL(@IP, 0), 10)set @val = @val + ISNULL(@DNS, '')return @val-- Also tried "return str(ISNULL(@IP, 0), 10)+ISNULL(@DNS, '')"-- Also tried "return ISNULL(STR(@IP, 10), ISNULL(@DNS, ''))"-- ... and other things...ENDGOcreate table ApplyAction(-- An action applies to a computerAct varchar(16) NOT NULL,-- The action to applyIP int NULL,-- The computer IP address, orDNS varchar(64) NULL,-- The DNS name of the computerTarget as dbo.ApplyActionPK(ComputerID, DNS), -- PK value-- Also tried "Target as ISNULL(STR(@IP, 10), ISNULL(@DNS, ''))"CONSTRAINT PK_ApplyAction PRIMARY KEY(Act, Target))SQL Server always complains that the primary key constraint cannot becreated over a nullable field - even though in no case will the 'Target'field be NULL.Please don't explain that I should store an IP address as a string.Though that would suffice for this example, it doesn't solve myactual problem (where there are four nullable fields, two of whichare FKs into other tables).What's the reason for SQL Server deciding that the value is NULLable?What's the usual way of handling such alternate PKs?Clifford Heath.

Stuck Between Cannot Insert The Value NULL Into Column 'ID' And Violation Of PRIMARY KEY Constraint

Jan 20, 2004

Cannot find an answer to this in previous posting, though there are similar topics.

My primary key "ID" requires a value (is not nullable), and not explictly providing it with one when I update a new record gives the following error:

Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'ID', table 'AdClub.mediaq.News'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'ID', table 'AdClub.mediaq.News'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.

However, trying to stuff that field with a recordCount+1 value (or any value), I get this error:

Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'Primary Key'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'News'.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'Primary Key'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'News'.

Cannot figure this one out. The value I'm providing for that field is known to be unique, but the SQL Server spits it out each time.

Is there a way to have the ID primary field automatically update with a new value when a new record is generated? This is how I used to do it in Access, but cannot find a similar feature in SQL Server. I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but right now I'm stuck in this "Catch-22" situation.

Please help!

Choosing Values For Primary Keys

Jul 20, 2005

Hello group:I've done alot of reading on this subject somewhat and have found thatmany people have many different opinions on this subject. My questioncenters mainly around using a lookup table to enable users to select apre-defined list of values.I have developed a practice myself of avoiding AutoNumber type datafields for primary keys where the primary key will be related to achild table. Nevertheless, what do most users do with lookup tables?My thoughts are to create a small key value for each value in thelookup table. For example:I might have a Carriers table which shows a list of carriers that Imight ship an order by. One of the entries may be 'Air Freight -Overnight', or 'Air Freight - 2nd Day Air'. I've seen a few exampleswhere the primary key field for each entry like these would beautonumber, or at least, a numeric value. What I like to do is createmy own key, like for 'Air Freight - Overnight', I might use 'AFO' forthe key, and for 'Air Freight - 2nd Day Air', I might use 'AF2'. Anythoughts on this? Mine are that even tho the users may never see thisvalue - I, as the developer will see it and I tend to prefer a keyvalue based on real data that means something other than anauto-incremented number. In referencing the well-known Northwind.mdbdatabase, I noticed their Categories table used a number field value,like 1, 2, 3....etc, but their customers table used values like'ALFKI' to represent their key values.What are some other thoughts out there? I'm working with Accesscurrently, but this project is about to move to SQL Server.James

Public Class CarAccessData
    Public Function Getcarinfo() As List(Of CarInfo)
        Dim AllCarInfo As New List(Of CarInfo)
        Dim SQL As String        SQL = "SELECT [SKU], [CarMake], [CarModel], [Carprice]"
        Dim MyConnection As SqlConnection        MyConnection = New SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("AntConnectionString1").ConnectionString)

            aDataReader = aCmd.ExecuteReader
            While aDataReader.Read()
                AllCarInfo.Add(New CarInfo(aDataReader))            End While
        Catch ex As Exception            Throw ex        Finally
            aDataReader.Close()
            MyConnection.Close()        End Try
        Return AllCarInfo    End Function
End Class

The bit I dont quite understand is the following snippet from above

Dim aCmd As SqlCommand        aCmd = MyConnection.CreateCommand
        aCmd.CommandText = SQL        aCmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text
        Dim aDataReader As SqlDataReader
        Try
            MyConnection.Open()
            aDataReader = aCmd.ExecuteReader
            While aDataReader.Read()
                AllCarInfo.Add(New CarInfo(aDataReader))            End While
        Catch ex As Exception            Throw ex        Finally

Can anyone explain this in real ABC style step by step please, just so I can start to understand this, ( I am quite new to this)

Can U Tell Me What This Error Means?

Jul 12, 2002

I am using ODBC to access MS Sql Server 2000 Enterprise(& Prof.) Edition. While running some queries, I occassionaly get following error :-
Error Text : [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionWrite (send())"
Error No : 10054
Source : Microsoft ODBC driver for SQL Server" as source.
IMO, Its not related to specific query as I get it for different queries at different time and its infrequent.
I have found a MS KB article for the error that says this error is possible in long queries if lightweight pooling (fiber mode) setting is enabled for SQL Server and the fix is to use SP2. I am already running with SP2 installed.
I could not find another reference to this error. And as I am unable to locate cause of problem, I am not able to troubleshoot it. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Missing Identity Values In Primary Keys

May 29, 2012

We are facing the following issue, several machines/users that are executing very often a command similar to :

INSERT INTO TableName (FieldOne,FieldTwo) VALUES ('ValueOne','ValueTwo');
SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY() AS Table_ID;

Where TableName has a primary key defined as identity(1,1).and that Table_ID is being used as reference in others tables

These queries are executed using different dababase users and among several diffrent apps..The Problem is that we are detecting lost block of "Table_ID's" as the other tables shows the InsertedID as a reference, but the TableName table lacks of this ID record. In other words, the INSERT seems to work, the SCOPE_Identity returns an InsertedID, and the other tables are populated using this number. However, when we query the TableName table the mentioned record does not exist. We are profiling the server and we're sure that there are no DELETE statement on the TableName table. This seems to be happening when the are either deadlocks or blocked processes. Whenever the deadlocks and locks disappear/solved, everything works as expected.why the Scope_Identity returns the Inserted ID if the INSERT action had failed.

Can DTS Automatically Create Primary Key Values Upon Export?

May 5, 2004

I have two practice tables I have created and want to export the values of one into the source table. I want to know if I can export into a table and have the destination table automatically give a primary key value to a record? I haven't been able to figure this out even after fiddling with the "Enable identity insert" checkbox under the Column Mappings tab. I have created source tables with and without primary keys and neither works because of the fact that I need to have a value for a primary key in order to INSERT into the destination.

Do I have to copy the source records into a staging table and assign the PK values myself by hand? This can't be the answer.

Passing Compound Primary Key Values To A Stored Procedure Using ADO.NET

Apr 10, 2008

Hi all,
I've had this problem for a while now and I'm looking for a better solution.

I'm pulling through a dataset from a SQL Server 2005 database and populating it into a DataGridView. The end user updates information on the grid and I then want to updates the results in the SQL Server table. My table has a compound primary key made up of two fields.

I'm currently looping through the data grid and for each value identified to update I'm executing a stored procedure that takes the two fields as parameters. However I know that this method isn't very efficient, especially if the user wants to update a few hundred records as it will execute the stored procedure a few hundred times.

Is there a way I can pass the two parameters in an ArrayList or something like that? I need SQL Server to be able to take the parameter. Is XML the way to go or is there any additional support in the .NET framework for such problems?

Thanks for your help.
