Print Control Stops Working

Jun 5, 2007

I have a few reports that suddenly stopped printing.

Nothing changed on the report server, and one minute they could print, the other they couldn't

I have one report that is 4 pages in preview and six when it prints. The users press the print control on the web page and the print dialog comes up, they select a printer and the printing messagebox comes up. Then it will print a couple of pages VERY SLOWLY... and eventually will hang at the 3rd page.

IT appears it is just spooling in the printer control viewer...

Other similiar reports that use the same query but a different parameter, work just fine.

I have rebuilt and redployed the report. The problem is happening on both my live and test environments.

I have looked through this forum but not found an answer. I did delete and re-isntall the client print control.

I have turned the client logging on. But no errrors show up anywhere.

I am running ssrs 2005 on both machines. test machine has win2003 sp1 , sql 2005 sp2 AND hotfix's

live machine has win2003 and sql 2000 latest sp.

I need help!

TIA

How Can I Get The Result Of A SQL PRINT Statement

Nov 5, 2003

I am using MSDE and WebMatrix. My stored procedure is creating a Dynamic SQL query and is is about 200 lines long.

I am not getting the expected results, but also not generating any errors. I inserted a Print statement to print the resultant SQL query, but I don't know how to see or display that print result.

I do NOT have SQL2000, only MSDE. I am using WebMatrix and VB.net to create my application. Is there some class in asp.net that will help me, or some free utility. One of the problems is that the dynamic SQL is using over 20 parameters to create the query; the end result of the user picking fields on the webform.

SSIS And T-SQL Print Statement

Feb 14, 2007

First, I will apologise in advance for my ignorance, but I am new to the subject of SSIS.

My objective is tbe able to execute a stored procedure from SSIS and have a log of what the stored procedure did - preferably a log file

At the moment the stored procedure diagnostics etc are via T-SQL Print statement .

When I execute the stored procedure from SSIS I don't get any of the print diagnostics.

I've experimented with raiseerror - 1 severity < 11 gives no output, but a severity of 11 results in the print diagnostics being displayed in the output window - but the task goes red.

Could someone help,

Thanks In advance.

SQLInfoMessageEventHandler And PRINT Statement In SQL Express

May 4, 2006

I have a stored procedure contains a few PRINT statement that return the status to the client.  On the client side, I am using vb.net to add handler for it, as follow:

'--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
con = New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=IntranetMaster;Integrated Security=True;Persist Security Info=False;Connect Timeout=0")

AddHandler con.InfoMessage, New SqlInfoMessageEventHandler(AddressOf ShowSQLMessage)

Sub ShowSQLMessage(ByVal o As Object, ByVal e As SqlInfoMessageEventArgs)
  Dim err As SqlError
  For Each err In e.Errors
   Console.WriteLine(Now() & " - SQL Message: " & err.Message)
  Next err
End Sub

'--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The stored procedures as follows:

BEGIN
 SET NOCOUNT OFF;

 PRINT 'Remove Sales Data in Current Year'
 EXEC uspMRT_RemoveSalesDataInCurrentYear @dbName

 PRINT 'Remove Reference Tables'
 EXEC uspMRT_RemoveRefTablesData @dbName

 PRINT 'Import Data'
 EXEC uspMRT_ImportData @dbName, @folder

END

'---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The result is that the message from several PRINT statements are coming out only at the end of the stored procedure and all in once, so I cannot time the individual processing time.

Is there anything I have done wrong? or anyway to make the PRINT result comes out immediately?

Thanks

Raymond

Get A Returned Print Statement Into Something That Can Be Evaluated...

Jan 11, 2008

We have some SQL CLR code that was written to go get information from a web service...all works great and the CLR code does what it is supposed to. The problem is, it returns its success or failure status as a string text value (equivalent of a print statement I imagine) instead of as a result set or output parameter that i can check. In the proc I wrote to call the CLR stored proc I do some cleanup that i would like to rollback if the call to the web service that the CLR proc makes fails. Problem is, how can i get there. I have tried every way that I know and I can't seem to get that text into an object (temp table, variable whatever) that i can evaluate. Anyone have any suggestions?

Print A Select Statement Within A Store Procedure

May 8, 2008

I want to create store procedure which will print out something like this:

Insert into [dbname].dbo.[gameBooks] value (@gameBookID, gameBookTitle, ganeVolumn)
But first one print out good, as I expected. I either got nothing or the error message on second piece.

Msg 245, Level 16, State 1, Line xxx
Conversion failed when converting the varchar value 'Insert into [dbname].dbo.[cookBooks] value (' to data type int.
Any Help will be greatly appreciated.

on SQL 2005 SP1.
Here is my example code (not the real one):
Create Procedure [dbo].[makeNewString]
@myBookID
As
Declare bookID int
Declare newRowID int
Declare insertBookInfoString nvarchar(150)
select 'Declare @newBookID int'
Set insertBookInforString =
(Select 'Insert into [dbname].dbo.[gameBooks] value (' + @gameBookID + ',' + gameBookTitle +',' + ganeVolumn +')'
from [dbname].dbo.[gameBooks])
where @gameBookID=@myBookID
Print insertBookInforString
select 'SET @newRowID = Scope_Identity()'
print @newRowID
select 'Declare @newBookID int'
Set insertBookInforString =
(Select 'Insert into [dbname].dbo.[cookBooks] value (' + @cookBookID +',' + cookBookTitle +','+cookVolumn+')'
from [dbname].dbo.[cookBooks]
where @cookBookID=@myBookID)
Print insertBookInforString
first insertBookInfoString prints out fine.
But I kept this error on second part:

------------------------------
DECLARE Declare @newBookID int
(1 row(s) affected)
Insert into [dbname].dbo.[gameBooks] value (@gameBookID, gameBookTitle, ganeVolumn) (this is what I want)
-----------------------------------------

Any ideas why this line is bringing up just titles rather than titles and slogan:

(obviously it's all on one line in my code)

I don't understand why it brings up just 'title', not 'title' and 'slogan'?

Any ideas/fizes/suggestion would be greatfully appreciated.

Like Statement Not Working.

May 8, 2008

I have a stored procedure that has an @Style parameter passed into it.

And down at the very bottom of the procedure it has this line:
And Style Like @Style

Now I realize that is not really valid, and I changed it to Style=@Style. But I'd like to understand WHY that isn't working as it was previously.

On our development box (single core X64) it works fine but on our multiple core X64 production box, this doesn't work.

Any ideas?

This is a MS SQL 2005 server we are talking to.

HELP--UPDATE STATEMENT NOT WORKING

Mar 21, 2000

Hi,

I am trying to write an update query to update rows in one table.

Structure of Table1:

SocialSecurityNumber Varchar(9) -- Primary Key
Name Varchar(30)

Structure of Table2 :

SocialSecurityNumber Varchar(9)
Name Varchar(30)

Table 1 contains:

Row1: "123456789" Sally
Row2: "999999999" Bill
Row3: "333333333" Alex

Table 2 contains:

Row1: "123456789" <NULL>
Row2: "123456789" <NULL>

Basically I want to update the name column in Table 2 (based on the SocialSecurityNumber column) so that after
the update Table 2 will contain:

Row1: "123456789" Sally
Row2: "123456789" Sally
------------------------------------------------------------
First I tried:

UPDATE Table2
INNER JOIN Table1 ON Table2.SocialSecurityNumber = Table1.SocialSecurityNumber
SET Table2.Name = Table1.Name
WHERE Table2.SocialSecurityNumber = Table1.SocialSecurityNumber

This works in Access but not it SQL Server 7.0.
------------------------------------------------------------
Then I tried:

UPDATE Table2
INNER JOIN Table1 ON Table2.SocialSecurityNumber = Table1.SocialSecurityNumber
SET Table2.Name = Table1.Name

Again this works in Access but not it SQL Server 7.0.
------------------------------------------------------------
Finally I tried:

UPDATE Table2, Table1
SET Table2.Name = Table1.Name
WHERE Table2.SocialSecurityNumber = Table1.SocialSecurityNumber

This also did not work.
------------------------------------------------------------
Is there any way to write this update statement without cursors?

Thanks.

Insert Statement Not Working

Jun 16, 2006

I have this statement buried in a sproc:

INSERT INTO PLAN_DEMAND ([YEAR], BOD_INDEX, SCEN_ID)
SELECT PLAN_SHIP.[YEAR], PLAN_SHIP.BOD_INDEX, 1
FROM PLAN_SHIP LEFT JOIN PLAN_DEMAND ON
PLAN_SHIP.[YEAR]=PLAN_DEMAND.[YEAR]
AND PLAN_SHIP.[BOD_INDEX]=PLAN_DEMAND.BOD_INDEX
WHERE PLAN_DEMAND.BOD_INDEX IS NULL

When I run the sproc in QA, the statements returns records to the grid, but does not insert them into the table. If I just copy the statement into QA and execute it, it works fine.

I'm sure it's something obvious (but not to me).

Any help would be much appreciated.

RECEIVE Statement Not Working

Nov 19, 2007

I followed an example using the AdventureWorks database to set up a simple messaging test on one database:

Code Block
-- We will use adventure works as the sample database
USE AdventureWorks
GO
-- First, we need to create a message type. Note that our message type is
-- very simple and allowed any type of content
CREATE MESSAGE TYPE JobRequest
VALIDATION = NONE
GO
-- Once the message type has been created, we need to create a contract
-- that specifies who can send what types of messages
CREATE CONTRACT JobRequestor
(JobRequest SENT BY INITIATOR)
GO
-- The communication is between two endpoints. Thus, we need two queues to
-- hold messages
CREATE QUEUE RequestorQueue
CREATE QUEUE ReceiverQueue
GO
-- Create the required services and bind them to be above created queues
CREATE SERVICE Requestor
ON QUEUE RequestorQueue
CREATE SERVICE Receiver
ON QUEUE ReceiverQueue (JobRequestor)
GO
-- At this point, we can begin the conversation between the two services by
-- sending messages
DECLARE @conversationHandle UNIQUEIDENTIFIER
DECLARE @message NVARCHAR(100)
BEGIN
BEGIN TRANSACTION;
BEGIN DIALOG @conversationHandle
FROM SERVICE Requestor
TO SERVICE 'Receiver'
ON CONTRACT JobRequestor
WITH ENCRYPTION=OFF, LIFETIME= 600;
-- Send a message on the conversation
SET @message = N'Hello, World';
SEND ON CONVERSATION @conversationHandle
MESSAGE TYPE JobRequest (@message)
COMMIT TRANSACTION
END
GO
-- Receive a message from the queue
RECEIVE CONVERT(NVARCHAR(max), message_body) AS message
FROM ReceiverQueue
-- Cleanup
DROP SERVICE Sender
DROP SERVICE Receiver
DROP QUEUE SenderQueue
DROP QUEUE ReceiverQueue
DROP CONTRACT HelloContract
DROP MESSAGE TYPE HelloMessage
GO

This all works fine but if I run the section that creates the message and then copy the RECEIVE section to a new query window and execute it, nothing is returned. If I run the RECEIVE section within the same query window it returns the 'Hello World' message as expected. I am new to Service Broker and so am assuming that I am missing something obvious!!

Update Statement Not Working

Apr 11, 2006

I've got the following update statement:

UPDATE ISSUE_ACTIONS
SET BAE_FLAG = 2
WHERE IA_ISSUE_NO = 399
AND IA_SEQUENCE = 20

The fields BAE_FLAG, IA_ISSUE_NO, and IA_SEQUENCE are all of the type int.

When I run this code inside of my windows app (C#),

cmd3.CommandText = "UPDATE ISSUE_ACTIONS " +
"SET BAE_FLAG = 2 " +
"WHERE IA_ISSUE_NO = 437 " +
"AND IA_SEQUENCE = 13";

try
{
cmd3.ExecuteNonQuery();
}
catch (Exception e)
{
throw (e);
}

I get a timeout error:

Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
The statement has been terminated.

But when I run the SAME statement from Query Analyzer, it executes without a problem.

Has anyone run into this issue before? How do I get around this?

The CommandTimeout property of cmd3 is set to the default because this is not a complex query and should not take more than .5 seconds to execute.

Print Barcodes With The Active X Print Control

Mar 2, 2007

We are having problems printing Reports (when printing by clicking on the AcitiveX print control), where the font for the fields are set to "C39HrP24DhTt" (barcode).

While viewing the report it displays as Barcodes but while printing, the Barcode does not get printed, but the string gets printed.

Environment: SSRS 2005

Using the ReportViewer Control in a .Net 2.0 Web App to render the reports.

BarCodes print fine in the following situations:

1. When the Report is exported to Excel and when printed from there

2. When you click on the print button on Internet Explorer

3. When saving as html (from view source) and opening that html document and printing.

BarCodes do NOT get printed in the following situation:

1. When printing by clicking on the "Print" (Active X Control) icon. Even the "Print Preview" does not show the Barcode.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Update With Case Statement Not Working?

UPDATE Employee
SET VEmployeeID = CASE WHEN E.VEmployeeID IS NULL
THEN ves.VEmployeeID
END
FROM Employee E
INNER JOIN VEmployeeStaging VES
ON E.EID= VES.EID

But what happens is when I run the procedure every other time I run it, it changes everything to null. The other times it puts the VEmployeeID in.

So what is happening is the times when it is not null (where it is not supposed to do anything) it puts a null in. The next time it works.

Transact SQL :: Select Statement Not Working In User Defined Function

Nov 3, 2015

The select statement:

SELECT DATEDIFF(n , LAG(CAST(Date AS DATETIME) + CAST(Time AS DATETIME), 1) OVER ( ORDER BY Date, Time ),
       CAST(Date AS DATETIME) + CAST(Time AS DATETIME))
   FROM [DataGapTest]

Gives the right output:

NULL
1
1
3548
0

However, when I put the statement in a function, I get only zeros as the output. It's as if the lag and current value are always the same (but they are not of course).

CREATE FUNCTION dbo.GetTimeInterval(@DATE date, @TIME time)
RETURNS INT
AS
  BEGIN
 DECLARE @timeInterval INT
   SELECT @timeInterval = DATEDIFF(n , LAG(CAST(@Date AS DATETIME) + CAST(@Time AS DATETIME), 1) OVER ( ORDER BY Date, Time ),
       CAST(@Date AS DATETIME) + CAST(@Time AS DATETIME))
   FROM dbo.[DataGapTest]
  RETURN @timeInterval
  END
