Hi All,
Recently had to rebuild our SQLServer installation from scratch! major pain!! We had a remote server running a replicated version of the internal database system for the website. We also have a SQL DB hosted with a new ISP which is in test mode. All managed via EM.
Re-installed software, upgaded tp SP3, new MDAC. Set up the references for the two external DB's with the Client Network Utility. In EM set up a connection to DB on the new ISP, works perfectly, tried on the old DB and get 'SQL Server is not running or access denied' error message.
I confirmed the server is running, as its our live site. Cant connect using Query Analyser. I can ping the adress successfully. I've created new user logings that mach on both machines/servers, still no luck!
Can anyone suggest what the problem is/might be or how to fix... I'm flat out of ideas!
Major THANKS! for any gems...

I have Enterprise Manager on my local machine. For the last twelvemonths it has been connecting without problem to my online SQL Serverdatabase provided by my ISP.Three weeks ago the ISP applied some sort of extra securityarrangements to their SQL Server to allow access only through port1433. they have told me to configure an alias using Network Client andto register this alias in the usual way using my Enterprise Manager.My problem is that despite creating the alias in exactly the wayinstructed I just cannot connect to online database. I keep gettingthe SQL Server does not exist or access denied when I try to connect.As a result of advice obtained I have tried using the lite version ofthe 'littleADmin' tool available fromhttp://www.mylittletools.net/scripts/en/mla_sql/Using this useful looking software I find I cannot connect to theonline SQL database when it is installed on my own local machine butif I install it on my website it does connect without problem to myonline SQL. Server databaseHowever I need to use my more powerful Enterprise Manager to connect,my question (at last!) is:1. Is there likely to be a problem trying to connect to my onlinedatabase from Enterprise Manager on my local machine as a result ofthe new security arrangements. In other words, is there somethinganalagous to what is happening with the 'littleAdmin tool' wherebyusing Enterprise Manager I cannot connect from my local machine forsome reason obvious to everyone except myself??or2. Is it possible that there is some problem arising from Net Client?(the aliases appear in Enterprise Manager OK)I know my ISP should be answering this sort of question but they justdon't seem to know. I need to connect even if only to download mydatabase and take it to another ISP,Best wishes, John Morgan

Hi all,I need to gain access to a remote SQL Server 2000 storing my data.The remote SQL machine can only be accessed via an internet connection,that is - it is not part of my network.I know Enterprise Manager can do the job, but EM only comes bundled inMS SQL Server, which is not installed on the client machine.Please let me know which other (preferably free) tools can performsuch remote access.Thanks,Gilad Haimov

Hi guys, I don't own a copy of Enterprise Manager and I need to remotely restore a database on my local machine to my hosted machine, can you guys recommend an application that can do remote restores?
Or is there a way to convert a Database into a long set of Transact SQL statements that I can run on the remote server (ala MySQL's MySQLDump)?
Thanks

We just installed an application, WhatsUpGold, to monitor our servers. Management won't let me host that on my primary SQL box. So, we are using MSDE on the local machine (call that box my_netmon).
I can access the db with very basic functionality using osql while on the my_netmon machine. I've added my domain user account as a System Admin using the following commands.
exec sp_grantlogin @name
go
exec sp_addsrvrolemember @name, 'sysadmin'
But when I go to the my_sql machine and try to attach to it with Enterprise Manager I get an error that the server does not exist.
What gives??? Is it just not possible, or am I missing something here?
My goal is to just be able to see the data stored in the MSDE db. Write views, etc...
Please advise,
Marc

Hello,
I am trying to solve this problem for the past 1.5 weeks and it is driving me crazy :(
I can't connect to my SQL database using Enterprise Manager, Query Analyzer, Visual Studio 2003 .NET or a .aspx that I created for testing.. it runs perfectly on my domain but it doesnt work on my computer, on the browser I get this message: SQL Server unavailable or access denied. It is the same message I get when I try connecting to my db using EM, QA, VS.NET etc :(
I can ping my sql domain, so I know I have access to it and it is working.. I can successfully connect to my personal SQL server running on my machine. (SQL Server Personal Edition running on Windows XP )
I tried doing everything I could,
I already selected TCP/IP as my client only protocol;
I tried installing the lastest MDAC (v 2.8);
I tried every other port on my TCP/IP client setup like 14333 or 11433 or 11143 etc;
I tried every other port on the alias I set for my sql address;
I tried downloading the evaluation version of MS SQL2000 and updating it to SP3;
I tried reinstalling several times my MS SQL2000 (I use the personal edition on my windows XP) and updating it to SP3;
I tried connecting to my sql address domain and directly to its IP;
And I tried a lot more resolutions that I can't remember right now, but it didn't work :(
I've been searching all forums/google etc looking for someone with my problem but I still didnt, everyone who had a problem connecting to their DB using EM or QA resolved it by doing "this or that", I did exactly the same "this or that" on my computer/config and it didn't resolve my problem. :(
What am I doing wrong? I can't connect to my database from my personal computer :(
I have never used enterprise manager before, so I don't know if it is a problem on my personal computer or on my sql server address on internet.. Is there anyway to find a free test ms sql database with like 1mb just to try and find out if I can connect to a sql database at all using EM or if the problem is here on my computer?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Xande

Hi Everybody,I use MS SQL server 2000 enterprise manager on a windows server 2003.I created a new database in enterprise manager, and try to restore the new database from a .bak file. I went to ---->restore database. I checked "from device" and select the right path to the .bak file.Then I click ok, but there is an error pop up." tend to override existing database", so I went to --->option, and checked "force override existing database". then I click ok, but get an error look like this http://ewwa.lo7.net/error.JPGI thought it was a problem with my .bak file. So I try to use another .bak file which I am sure it is 100% good. It prompt the restore is sucessfully. But when I checked the db, there nothing there(No tables).I think there must be something wrong with my enterprise manager's configuration.Do you know what happen with my enterprise manager? Thank you a lot in advance:)!!

My VB.net application is installed one two machines in different cities i.e. there are two separate databases.
First machine's IP address is say 202.33.44.55 and other machine IP address is say 203.33.55.66. Now I want to use each others databases i.e. I want to set their database group.
So that in my VB.Net's application which is installed on 202.33.44.55 I could see data of the 203.33.55.66 by just changing the connection string

Hi to all:
I always had a problem connecting to SQL Server from home using EM.
I do add a new server registration, but i always get the following exception:
A Connection could not be established to IP ADDRESS
Reason: SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
ConnectionOpen(Connect())
At the same time, I do use a utility, found at http://sql.bhaidar.net to connect to the same database and works perfect.
Is there any configuration I should do to my pc, don't know maybe some port configuration or so, to allow EM to connect to those remote databases?
Thanks in advance.

We are running SQL 2000 SP3 on a Win2K server with multiple user databases. Our current problem is the ability of users to view the database objects via the native tools.
Example: User Bob
Bob has the following rights:
DB A – datareader/datawriter
DB B – datareader/datawriter
DB C – datareader
DB D – datareader
DB E – datareader/datawriter
The user has no builder rights or server roles.
In Enterprise Manager, the user can not see any databases. In Query Analyzer, the user can only see DB A, B, and C. Anyone seen this problem before and/or have suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Hi there ppl,
I am having a little problem with a remote database, i created the database on my webspace mysql and i acess it with SQL Manager For MySQL and manage it fine, but i need this database for a C# application and now is where the problem starts.
I am using the following lines to connect to the remote database with no success and i dont know where is the problem, because i used many diferent connection strings and none have worked, i know that my webspace server is receiving remote connections because i can acess it from SQL MANAGER. I cant find the problem, i haved success with a connection string, but then a argumentoutofrange error about parameter count was killing me. Maybe i cant run the database on my webspace!?, but in that case why SQL Manager connects fine??, shouldnt give a error too?
Code Block
public static OleDbConnection CAT_DBConnection;
CAT_DBConnection = new OleDbConnection("PROVIDER=SQLOLEDB;DATA SOURCE=82.102.15.13;UID=****;PWD=****;DATABASE=****");
CAT_DBConnection.Open();

Hello,
I would like to know whether is it possible to administer a database on a hosted site - i.e inserting some lines, executing a query. I normally access the files via ftp connection. And so far the only way I figured I can mess around with the database is to download it and change it on my desktop PC.
Thank You.

Hi,
I have SQL Server 2000 with SP4. When we take backup from Enterprise manager its fails with error "timeout expired". But when we take backup from query analyzer it works.
It seems that through enterprise manager 30 sec is the non configurable timeout parameter set. Checked sysprocesses table during backup but there was no blocking during that time at least for that spid.
Is there a way to find out which process is blocking the database backup? Also, what are the possible scenarios where database backup can be blocked.
Thanks,
Ramesh

Hi,
I have an SSIS package which runs subsequent packages in a batch. When I run the main package through command line or a SQL job and connect to a data warehouse that is on the same machine, it runs without a problem. When I try and connect to a warehouse on a remote machine (ideal configuration), it fails with this error:
Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "Communication link failure". An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "Communication link failure". An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. ".
This seems to happen on random subpackages and isn't always consistent.
My Master.dts.Config file has this connection info:
<Configuration ConfiguredType="Property" Path="Package.Connections[Batch].Properties[ConnectionString]" ValueType="String">
<ConfiguredValue>Data Source=RemoteServerName;Initial Catalog=DataWarehouse;Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;</ConfiguredValue>
</Configuration>
Both machines have 64-bit operating system and 64-bit SQL software.
Any help would be great.
Thanks.

We have a SQL Server in a Demilitarised Zone, i.e. off the LAN, and I need to configure the Firewall so that I can talk to the SQL Server from inside the LAN using Enterprise Manager etc.
Does anyone know what port Ent Mgr would use, or have any information on this subject.
I would certainly appreciate any feedback.
Thanks.

Hi All,
Just installed this on a server at work. From home (outside of our network), I cannot connect to this instance from Management Studio, as I'm getting the following error :
When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error 40 - Could not open connection to a SQL Server)
However, if I try from Sql 2000 Enterprise Manager on another box in my house, I have no probem connecting.
And yes, the Server at work is configured to accept remote connections.
Any help would be much appreciated.
