Problem Importing Column

Jan 3, 2008

Hi

I have a column in a .txt file that I am trying to import.
The field shows the time of a transaction in the format of "12:20 AM"
Does anyone know a way of importing the field as a time field as opposed to a VARCHAR type? I have tried importing it as a datetime type, but this doesnt seem to work.

Thanks

Importing From Xls That Has All Data In First Column

Sep 19, 2006

I have a spreadsheet that has all of the data in the first column. The data is delimited by asterisks and there are no column headings. My goal is to import the data into a SQL table. I get the error message "External table is not in the expected format" when I try to select the name of the Excel sheet in the Excel Source Editor. I tried reading using a flat file connection instead of Excel connection, but that didn't work.

In Excel, I can use the Text to Columns feature to convert the data to columns in the spreadsheet. But I have to go into the file manually to do that. Is there a way in SSIS to do the same thing automatically? Or is there a way to save the XLS as a TXT file? Then, I could just use Flat File Connection to read the delimited data.

Thanks.

Problems Importing New Column Data

Nov 29, 2007

I am trying to import a table from a remote database which has a new column added, which I want along with the rest of the data. When I try doing the import via the wizard (Tasks -> Import Data...), the option to drop and re-create the destination table is disabled. Under "Mappings", the newly added column appears as the last row, but for the Destination column, it says "<ignore>" and presents no other option.

How can I bring this new column over? I've checked the table via the dependency viewer, there are no objects which depend on it and no objects on which it depends.

Importing Data In Table With Identity Column

Nov 13, 2000

Whenever I import (or even append from another table) data to a table that has an Identity column, I get an error: Cannot insert NULL values in Identity column.

Isn't the Idenity column supposed to incement automatically without me having to provide a value? Using INSERT provides an Identity value automatically, using import however doesn't.

How can I overcome this problem? (I now delete and recreate the Identity column - really BAD practice!)
Thank you.

Importing Dates Using Derived Column Transformation

Aug 6, 2007

Hi All

I've got a flatfile which contains a column SALEDATE with this data
20070802
''
20070804
''
20070805
20070901

I've got a table with a column SALEDATE datetime.
I use a derived column with this expression

SALEDATE <add as new column> (DT_DBDATE)(SUBSTRING(SaleDate,1,4) + "-" + SUBSTRING(SaleDate,5,2) + "-" + SUBSTRING(SaleDate,7,2)) database date [DT_DBDATE]

This expression fails whenever it comes across a blank field.
How can evaluate my expression to insert a null if it comes across a blank field?

Thank You

Help Importing File With Varying Column Widths

True story. Thanks. Dont think that fixed or ragged is going to work for me though. File does not seem to be structured.

I have what appears to be a fixed length file that I would like to import using SSIS. However it does not look loike the spacing between fields is constant. Is there a way to say from character 1 to 10 is X, and 11 to 15 is Y, etc etc? Below is a couple of rows that all pertain to the same record.

Kirk: Importing/Exporting With Column ErrorCode, ErrorColumns

Mar 8, 2006

I am currently redirecting lookup failures into error tables with ErrorCode and ErrorColumn. It works fine until I want to transfer data into the archived database. The SSIS pacakage generate by SQL Exporting tool is throwing an "duplicate name of 'output column ErrorCode and ErrorColumn" error. This is caused by oledb source error output. The error output automatically add ErrorCode and ErrorColumn to the error output selection and not happy with it.

I think the question is down to "How to importing/exporting data when table contains ErrorCode or ErrorColumn column?"

Importing Excel Sheet Which Have Dynamic Column Name And Dynamic Number Of Columns

Aug 25, 2007

Hi Craig/Kamal,

I got your email address from your web cast. I really enjoyed the web cast and found it to be
very informative.

Our company is planning to use SSIS (VS 2005 / SQL Server 2005). I have a quick question
regarding the product. I have looked for the information on the web, but was not able to find
relevant information.

We are getting Source data from two of our client in the form of Excel Sheet. These Excel sheets
Are generated using reporting services. On examining the excel sheet, I found out that the name
Of the columns contain data itself, so the names are not static such as Jan 2007 Sales, Feb 2007 Sales etc etc.
And even the number of columns are not static. It depends upon the range of date selected by the user.

I wanted to know, if there is a way to import Excel sheet using Integration Services by defining the position
Of column, instead of column name and I am not sure if there is a way for me to import excel with dynamic
Number of columns.

Your help in this respect is highly appreciated!

Thanks,

Hi Anthony, I am glad the Web cast was helpful.

Kamal and I have both moved on to other teams in MSFT and I am a little rusty in that area, though in general dynamic numbers of columns in any format is always tricky. I am just assuming its not feasible for you to try and get the source for SSIS a little closer to home, e.g. rather than using Excel output from Reporting Services, use the same/some form of the query/data source that RS is using.

I suggest you post a question on the SSIS forum on MSDN and you should get some good answers.

Hi all,

The requirement is to have a table say 'child_table', with an Identity column to refer another column from a table say 'Parent_table'..

i cannot implement this constraint, it throws the error when i execute the below Alter query,

ALTER TABLE child_table ADD CONSTRAINT fk_1_ct FOREIGN KEY (child_id)
REFERENCES parent_table (parent_id) ON DELETE CASCADE

the error thrown is :
Failed to execute alter table query: 'ALTER TABLE child_table ADD CONSTRAINT

CASCADE '. Message: java.sql.SQLException: Cascading foreign key 'fk_1_ct' cannot be

Importing From XML

Aug 26, 2004

Hello everyone and thanks in advance.

Ok, here's the deal. I am 1 of 2 developers at my organization, the other is a COBOL programmer. Long story short, every night he sends me a 22MB XML file containing our company's inventory. This contains about 40,000 items. In C#, I'm basically looping through all the XML nodes and on each node I load up an object with the particular properties (manufacturer, SKU, serial number, etc.) and call a Stored Procedure to to save the item.

In saving the item, I'm checking to see if it was already in my inventory and I either perform an update or an insert on the table as approriate. The query does a couple of other things like retreiving the Purchase Order Number, Cubic Feet, etc. from other tables. All in all, the query takes about 1-2 seconds to complete. I've optimized the query as much as I know how (including the addition of indexes), but this still takes at least 6 hours to complete the 40,000 items. Is this the best approach? Any other suggestions?

So far the only things I've thought about changing is:
1. Break it out into multiple queries to avoid poor compilation of execution plans

2. Multithread the C# app so that I'm running like 10 queries at once.

3. Get the COBOL programmer to give me a delimited file and do a BULK INSERT on it into an empty HEAP, then run a single INSERT and a single UPDATE (using CASE statements)

Again, Thanks in advance!

TSQL - Using ALTER TABLE - ALTER COLUMN To Modify Column Type / Set Identity Column

Hi guys,
If I have a temporary table called #CTE
With the columns
[Account]
[Name]
[RowID Table Level]
[RowID Data Level]
and I need to change the column type for the columns:
[RowID Table Level]
[RowID Data Level]
to integer, and set the column [RowID Table Level] as Identity (index) starting from 1, incrementing 1 each time.
What will be the right syntax using SQL SERVER 2000?

I am trying to solve the question in the link below:

Thanks in advance,

I have tried the code below, but getting syntax error...

ALTER TABLE #CTE
ALTER COLUMN
[RowID Table Level] INT IDENTITY(1,1),
[RowID Data Level] INT;

I have also tried:

ALTER TABLE #CTE
MODIFY
[RowID Table Level] INT IDENTITY(1,1),
[RowID Data Level] INT;

Is this possible and how can I go about it? Can I just add it to the Click event of a button?

Now i've been sent one single db data file that i'm told is a backup copy of someones database. How do i get this loaded onto my server. I've tried restoring from this file but it complains that the backup file is not for the database i'm restoring to.... which is correct.... this has to be something that many people deal with? isn't it?

Can someone please help me out.... some pointers would be much appreciated.
