Problem Add A New Table To An Existing Transaction Replication.
Jul 3, 2007
How do I get a new table added to a transaction publication with R/O subscribers? Is it not possible to add new tables without completely drop and recreating the publication?

We have a requirement to add a not null column to an existing table.
I created the column with null and updated with single quotes, and then converted the column into not null.
Now, I can see in the publisher, it went fine. but in the subscribers, i'm getting the error as, can not insert null value. I then tried to make column as null to resolve the issue, but still it is holding the same error and not proceeding further.
Now I even dropped the column. still same issue. how can I resolve this issue? I'm using sql server 2008 R2 with SP3. replication type is Merge replication.

Hi,My code worked fine before i placed "SqlTransaction" command in my code. Now it is showing "Unexpected existing transaction." Please tell me where I am going wrong. My Code:
protected void
Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { using (SqlConnection con = new
SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["Mfund_String"].ConnectionString)) { con.Open(); using (SqlConnection destinationConnection = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["Mfund_String"].ConnectionString)) { destinationConnection.Open(); using (SqlTransaction transaction =
destinationConnection.BeginTransaction()) { SqlCommand DelCmd = new
SqlCommand("delete
from mfund_data", con); DelCmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); using (SqlBulkCopy bulkCopy = new
SqlBulkCopy(destinationConnection)) { bulkCopy.DestinationTableName = "mfund_data"; try { bulkCopy.WriteToServer(CreateDataTableFromFile()); transaction.Commit(); } catch
(Exception ex) { transaction.Rollback(); Response.Write(ex.Message); } } } destinationConnection.Close(); } con.Close(); } }Regards,Jagadeesh

I have programmatically created a SqlConnection that begins a SqlTransaction. During the first part of this SqlTransaction, the contents of a table are deleted. The next part uses the SqlBulkCopy object to copy data from another database (in the form of a DataTable). The delete goes through fine, but the SqlBulkCopy always generates a SqlException with the message "Unexpected existing transaction." I cannot think of anything I am doing wrong.
The code looks at an XML file for instructions on each transaction. Each transaction is composed of tasks. Each task will pull data from a different type of database (MVR.Command is a Factory Database object). Please view the code below and tell me if you can spot what I am doing wrong:
using (SqlConnection destinationConnection = new SqlConnection(MVR.ConnectionSource.GetConnectionString(destinationServiceName)))
{
destinationConnection.Open();
using (SqlTransaction transaction = destinationConnection.BeginTransaction(IsolationLevel.Snapshot, "Transport"))
{
transaction.Save("Beginning");
int totalTasks = 0;
int successfulTasks = 0;
foreach (XmlNode taskNode in transactionNode.SelectNodes("Tasks/Task"))
{
totalTasks += 1;
string sourceServiceName = taskNode.Attributes["sourceServiceName"].Value;
string destinationTablename = taskNode.Attributes["destinationTablename"].Value;
string query = taskNode.InnerText;
MVR.Command source = MVR.ConnectionSource.GetCommand(sourceServiceName);
source.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
source.CommandText = query;
DataTable sourceData = source.ExecuteDataTable();
try
{
// Prepare the destination table (delete everything)
int rowsDeleted = new SqlCommand("delete from " + destinationTablename, destinationConnection, transaction).ExecuteNonQuery();
using (SqlBulkCopy bulkCopy = new SqlBulkCopy(destinationConnection))
{
bulkCopy.DestinationTableName = destinationTablename;
bulkCopy.NotifyAfter = 1000;
bulkCopy.WriteToServer(sourceData);
bulkCopy.Close();
successfulTasks += 1;
// Log success
}
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
// Log failure
}
}
transaction.Save("End");
// Based on the success of all tasks, either commit or rollback
if (successfulTasks == totalTasks)
{
transaction.Commit();
}
else
{
transaction.Rollback();
}
}
destinationConnection.Close();
}

Hi All,
I am having a server where replication is set up between 2 differnt databases. It is currently running. I want to add a couple of tables to the replication. I tried using sp_addArticle, but after executing it, in the properties of the publication it shows the new tables, but at the database level the tables are missing.
I tried with sp_addsubscription but I am getting strange error:
Server: Msg 14100, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_addsubscription, Line 240
Specify all articles when subscribing to a publication using concurrent snapshot processing.
What can I do to publish the tables into the target database?
Thanks in advance.

My manager does not want to go through the process of moving 40 GB of data to the subscriber database over the network as would occur during the initialization phase of replication (exact method of replication has yet to be determined). The subscriber db is for Web Access and will be read-only. He wants to back up a db and use tapes to restore the db on the subscriber db server, and then activate replication. I have told him that you have to allow SQL Server to create the objects on the subscriber side and you have to allow SQL Server to control the data flow, that manually creating the objects on the subscriber side will not work. He says that I am incorrect.
Who is right? I haven't been able to find an answer from the Microsoft site and news groups.
Thanks,

I am trying to make a DDL change to an existing column for a transactionally replicated table. I am attempting to effect the ALTER on the Publisher. Below is the statement I am using:
[Begin Code Snippet]
ALTER TABLE Products ALTER COLUMN LegacyProductID varchar(20)NULL
[Begin Code Snippet]
This is the error message:
Msg 4928, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
Cannot alter column 'LegacyProductID' because it is 'REPLICATED'.
Column properties currently are:
INT
NULL
Not For Replication - False
Primary Key - False
I read this article http://www.replicationanswers.com/AlterSchema2005.asp but still cannot either get the statement to work or identify a reason it isn't working.

Hi gang,
We have a couple of databases on separate servers that have exactly the same schema, and we would like to set up merge replication between them.
Is that possible? The few times we've experimented on test databases, the subscriber database has been trashed and rebuilt using data from the publisher, rather than preserving data from both databases.
I'm really new to replication in general, so any kind of advice would be helpful.
Cheers,
Matt

We have a setup with one Publisher Server and 15 Subscribers with merge replication configured for all subscribers. The current Database size is approximately 3 GB expected to grow to 10 GB in next 1 year. We wanted to know what benefits would we incur if we add an additional seperate distributor server (hardware box). Also, what is the approx. size of a database where a seperate distributor server (hardware box) is recommended.
Thanks in advance

Hi all,
I'm a rather newbie, not only to this forum but also to sql server having a question to the following issue:
Is it possible to drop/remove/delete the "orphan" of a merge subscription on one instance of sql server without having the (former) distributor/publisher (on other instance) available?
The background is: I had a small replication infrastructure with two instances (on two machines), one the publisher and distributor, the other the subscriber. Now it happened that the publisher/distributor machine was completely set up new without having the replication dropped in advance, what remained on the subscriber is now a database with all the merge/replication tables and the guid columns in the user tables.
Moreover this, an entry remained in the subscription saying that a subscription with the former publisher exists...
Can I remove these "orphans" without having to setup the instance again?
Thank you,
Andy

I have an existing publication in sql 2012 with 2 articles, and then I add 2 more articles. After that when I generate a snapshot, will the snapshot be generated for 2 new articles only or for all 4 articles?
I remember adding 1 new articles to one existing publication with 150 articles and when I generated snapshot, it was generated only for 1 article. But I don't remember clearly.
Does it behave differently for small and large number of articles?

i have 2 tables (both containing the same column names/datatypes), say table1 and table2.. table1 is the most recent, but some rows were deleted on accident.. table2 was a backup that has all the data we need, but some of it is old, so what i want to do is overwrrite the rows in table 2 that also exist in table 1 with the table 1 rows, but the rows in table 2 that do not exist in table one, leave those as is.. both tables have a primary key, user_id.
any ideas on how i could do this easily?

Hello,
I'd like to create a temporary table with the same schema as an exiting table. How can I do this without hard coding the column definitions into the temporary table definition?
I'd like to do something like:
CREATE TABLE #tempTable LIKE anotherTable
..instead of...
CREATE TABLE #tempTable (id INT PRIMARY KEY, created DATETIME NULL etc...
I'm sure there must be a simple way to do this!
Many thanks,

I am using the DTS wizard and having problems importing excel into an existing table.
Problem is that various column in excel are defined as double in the wizard but in my db table it is defined as an integer.
How do I get around this issue so the data types in excel can match up accordingly to my defined data type in my db table?
The wizard does a bad job of guessing the correct data type.
I have heard of using a staging table to import from excel and using that as my source to import into my existing table.

Dear all,
I set up a transaction replication (from server A to server B) for tables and stored procedures. When I update the data at server A, the data at server B will be updated by replication. However, the stored procedure can't update at server B no matter what I changed at server A's stored procedure. How can I update the stored procedure using transaction replication?
The other question is the table schema. As I know, the transaction replication will be created a snapshot to project all needed tables and stored procedures at the first time. If I created a new table, stored procedure or changed the table schema (e.g. add/delete a new column), the transaction replication didn't update the new objects to the server B. What can I do to update the transaction replication except creating a new subscription?
Thanks.

Hi all,
I am using SQL 2k on two seperate servers on win 2k advance servers without any service packs. My problem is i am using transactional replication between two servers (SML1 and SML2), SML1 is publisher/Distributor and SML2 is subscriber. My db name on both the server is same. when i am inserting data in db on SML1 it replicates immediately on SML2 but vice versa in not happening. Any help in setting up two way replication is highly appreciated. (There is no timestamp column on table which is used as article and there is PK).
thanks in advance.

I am attempting to set up transactional replication between a production server (SQL1) and a “reports” server (SQL2). The production server is the publisher, the “reports” server is the distributor and the first subscriber, other subscribers will be added later. There are multiple databases on the production server; selected tables from each will be replicated to corresponding databases on the other servers. Both are SQL7, no SP (yet).
I have set up the replication on two databases so far. The initial snapshot replication runs fine; the tables and data are duplicated on the reports server.
For one DB the transaction replication fail the other still reports “No replicated transactions are available”, which is probably true.
The failing log reader agent history reports: “The process could not execute ‘sp_replcmds’ on SQL1“ (five time, 10 minutes apart). The session details shows 2 items, “Initializing” and the same error message. The error details show it as an ODBC error timeout.
After the fifth time the log agent history reports “The process could not execute ‘sp_Msadd_repl_commands27hp’ on SQL2 ” The session details show 3 items , “Initializing”, “No replicated transactions are available” and the same error message. The error details show the following (Category, Source, Number, Message): Agent, blank, 2000, “IDistPut Interface has been shut down.”; Agent, SQL1-JCL1, 20007,” No replicated transactions are available.” ( 26 times); Data Source, SQL2, 1007 “Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'MSrepl_transactions' with unique index 'ucMSrepl_transactions'.Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'MSrepl_transactions' with unique index 'ucMSrepl_transactions'.”
I can restart the agent, but after two hours the same thing appears. These were set up with EM using the wizzards
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to setup real time transaction replication between two databases on two different sql server 7.0.The ideas is to replicate all the objects from the first database to the second database including table, stored procedures and views. Both SQL servers’ runs under different service NT account.
The sql server that I want to replicate runs an application that create additional tables when the application is running.
How do I schedule a transaction replication so that all the objects plus those additional tables and stored procedures that the application creates at run time are also going to get replicated in real time?
Thanks in advance.

Hi All,
I have been asked to take over the maintenance on dB servers that I have not originally 'set up'. The request came as a result of the database log files growing at such a rapid pace its taking up hard drive space. I ran sp_dboption and noticed that the log files are NOT set up to truncate on checkpoint. As in SQL 2000 I wanted to determine if the dB was set up in 'simple' or 'full' recovery mode. It appears they are set up in 'full' recovery mode (which we can modify, since this is not a transactional dB and we rarely if ever have to restore from the transaction log). Hence my question,
Is there anything I need to worry about (regarding replication)if I change the dboption to truncate on checkpoint and set dB in simple recovery mode?
And after I backup the transaction log and try to shrink it will that have any adverse affects? I feel like this is all I need to do but replication is new ground for me, any information regarding it would be greatly appreciated. Also, any advice on how to maintain the transaction logs would be helpful.
