Problem Installing Feature Pack For SQL Server 2005 SP2 CTP

Nov 16, 2006

Some of the individual installs on the "Feature Pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 - Community Technology Preview (CTP) November 2006" page available here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=7a9ad90f-7f95-4369-a206-e84053d63fd3&displaylang=en

say "requires Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0, also available on this page". However, there is not an XML Services install on the page.

Is it included in one of the installs or not needed if you're already running SP1?

Thanks,

Terry

Oct 24, 2006

Hi,

I downloaeded "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Datamining Viewer Controls" feature pack, and tried to run the dataminingviewerclient.exe.

When i view my local time series data mining model, It works well for single series model, but when i load a Microsoft time series model containing multiple data series, an unhandled exception occurs.

I post the error message below:

Detecting Feature Pack Components On A SQL Server Server

Feb 28, 2007

We have a product that uses, and will bootstrap, several of the feature pack components when it is installed (xmo, MSOLAP9, etc). However, if our product is installed on a machine that has SQL Server 2005 already installed, all of the feature pack components will have been installed as part of the server install, so we don't want to bootstrap them in that case. Is there a good way to detect this case? Clearly, simply checking that the feature pack MSI hasn't been installed isn't good enough, since SQL Server has its own MSIs that are different from the FP MSIs.

Feature Pack And SP1

I posted this over on, I guess, the other SQL Server forum (msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups). Sorry if it's a cross post or better answered there.

Does anyone know if the feature packs are included in SP1 or still need to be installed separately.

The Feature(s) Specified Are Not Valid For This Edition Of SQL Server Error When Installing Management Tools On Win 2003 X64

May 23, 2007

I've successfully installed SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on an Enterprise edition of Windows Server 2003 x64. I'm now (and also tried & failed during the install of the database engine) attempting to install the "Management Tools" component on the same server. However, in all my attempts to do so, I receive the following error:

---

The feature(s) specified are not valid for this edition of SQL Server

---

The message box does not list the features that are not valid but since the only item I've selected to install is the "Management Tools" option under "Client Components" it obviously points to something with that.

Am I missing something or are the Management Tools not supported in my config - most notably SQL Server 2005 Standard edition running on Windows Server 2003 x64?

Thanks.

Date Selector Control Issues After Installing Report Viewer 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable

Jan 17, 2008

I am doing drillthrough from ReportA to ReportB via the Date field on ReportA. In Report Manager, all is well. However, when run through a custom app using asp.net and the report viewer control, the behavior was erratic. sometimes it would work. sometimes it would merely bring up the ReportA again and i would have to click Date again and then it would work.

a coworker recommended the Report Viewer fix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933137. Since the redistributable was not present in Add/Remove programs on my test box, i installed the full version. I then started up the .net app in debug and ran ReportA and drilled through to ReportB several times and could not make it fail. I was happy.

Since the redistributable was not present on the production box, i installed the full install there as well. However, the erratic report viewer behavior continued.

I decided to try runnign ReportB directly instead of via the drill through from ReportA. ReportB had always run perfectly on its own. When i try to use the graphical date selector control, the results are different depending on the machine I use.

1. If i am using my test box, and i run ReportB directly via the app in debug mode, i get a runtime error indicating Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object required. It then points to Reserved.ReportViewerWebControl.axd at the GetObjectPosition(obj) function.

2. If i am using my test box and go out to the live production website, i get the same runtime error.

3. If i am using another machine and go out to the live production website, the data selector control merely seems to refresh the report. This is the same behavior i get when using the production server and going out to the live website.

The redistributable has been uninstalled from both the test box and the production box. This did not change the behavior described above.

All of the Microsoft.ReportViewer items in C:Windowsassembly indicate version 8.0.0.0.

Any help would be grand. Also, please let me know if I should cross post this in the .Net forums.

Thank you.

Queue Insert Statement What Is The Best SQL Server 2005 Feature To Use?

Apr 4, 2007

Hello everybody, I'm not completly aware of the SQL server 2005 possibilities so I'd need an hints from somebody with a wide knowledge to understand the direction to take!

This is what I have to do.

I insert into a table XML message. the messages are pushed automatically by an application I have no ""control" on and I get several messages "at the same time".

Everytime the message is inserted into the database I need to trasform the XML data into the correspondent relational value and I know already that in some cases it could take a while (1 second can be considered a while..)
My worry is that in the moment I process one message I loose the other one inserted after ,,,

There is some tool that helps me to handte the process as I would..

I was looking into SQL service broker?

It can be the right choice?

Thank you for any help!!

SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 Has Not Upgraded Visual Studio 2005 Business Intelligence Tools

Mar 18, 2008

Hi,
I understand from previous threads that installing SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 on the desktop client can speed up the response rate of the Visual Studio 2005 Business Intelligence Tools.

However after logging on as an administrator and installing Service Pack 2, Service Pack 2 returned no errors. However after launching Visual Studio and clicking on the about dialog box the version reported was still €śRTM.050727-4200€? where I was expecting to see €śSP.050727-7600€?.

I understood that I applied the same service pack to my copy of SQL Server on my laptop and the upgrade worked successfully.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,

Kieran.

SQL Cluster Setup Fails After Installing Service Pack 2

May 28, 2000

We have successfully been using MSCS with MSSQL7 (SP1) running under NT4 EE
(SP6a), installed in an active/active configuration using, two DELL
PowerEdge 6350 machines. Recently I installed MSSQL7 (SP2), I followed the
instructions that came with SP2, and unclustered the SQL nodes using the
Failover Cluster Wizard, and installed SP2, this was uneventful, and
appeared to install correctly. Next I tried to recluster the SQL nodes
using the Failover Cluster Wizard as directed. This failed with: "Could not
run setup on remote machine. SQL Cluster Setup failed." So I began the
usual research using the usual resources, and have found articles that
discusses this error, and the things to look for when it happens. I have
exhausted all suggestions without success. I appear to have everything
correctly configured. I have enabled Cluster Logging (level 3), following
are the two things I have found that indicate something is wrong:

1. In the SQL Error Log the following gets logged when I run the wizard:
"Attempting to initialize Distributed Transaction Coordinator."
"Failed to obtain TransactionDispenserInterface:
XACT_E_TMNOTAVAILABLE"

2. In the Cluster Log I see the following message repeatedly:
"[ClRtlCopySecurityDescriptor] MakeSelfRelativeSD failed,
0x00000551"

3. In the sqlclstr.log I see the following, without an indication of
which file is missing:
"[reghelp.h:235] : 2 (0x2): The system cannot find the file
specified."
"[clushelp.cpp:166] : 259 (0x103): No more data is available."
"[validate.cpp:147] DeleteTestGroup:OpenClusterResource: 5007
(0x138f): The cluster resource could not be found."
"~~~ XXX InstallRemote failed"

Does anyone have any ideas about what could be causing this problem?
Many thanks in advance.

SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1

Apr 19, 2006

Is there no "passive" install mode for SP1 (gui but no user input required)? I can run unattended using the /quiet switch but this gives me absolutely no feedback as to progress or success/failure of the install. It also returns to the command prompt immediately whilst kicking of msiexec in the background, meaning I can't trap any errorlevel. How are we supposed to check success or failure in applying the SP for unattended installs? For rolling this out across an enterprise we need something, usually hotfix.exe has a passive install mode.

thx, Simon.

SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 - Install

Mar 9, 2007

Hi dear Devs!
I have a problem and now I am not sure, what I should do. "Microsoft Update" Service warned me, that a new critical update is ready for download. It was the update "SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2", I did that. Untill here no problem. The update "SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2" was ready for download too. I have both versions on my computer "SQL Server 2005 Express Edition" and "SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition". The Express Edition came together with the install of "Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite", two days later I have installed the "SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition". Now to my problem, the "SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2" installation failed in one point, the name of it is "Microsoft SQL Server Native Client". The whole installation was not interrupted, it told me only at end of this updating that this point wasn't successful - I saw it in the "Summary.txt". While the install I saw that this "Microsoft SQL Server Native Client" was twice in the list of the Service Pack 2 Update. Both of these points had the identical name. In short words, I saw that the SP2 wanted made an update at "Microsoft SQL Server Native Client" twice. I thought, it is because these two editions of "SQL Server 2005" on my computer. But the result is, that the SP2 couldn't update the second 'Native Client'. I checked it in the 'Software' section in 'Control Panel' and I have really two installations of this "Microsoft SQL Server Native Client". My question is, is that normal, is that because I have two "SQL Server 2005" Editions on my computer? And what can I do with this failed part of the SP2. Can someone help me with this failed 'Native Client' SP2 update? I were really happy, if someone could give me the best solution to fix this problem.
Thank you very much for your help and answers

SQL Server: Service Pack 3 Or 2005 Express Edition

Jan 4, 2005

I downloaded Web Matrix. Very nice. My VB experience makes this very intuitive. But I see in order to do dB development, I also need to download MS SQL, which is labeled MSDE in as step 3 in the Web Matrix download operation. As I follow the link forward I see that there are three distinct components:

Sql2kasp3.exe
Sql2kdesksp3.exe
Sql2ksp3.exe

Are all three of these required?

Also I see there is a beta version of the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition: http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/sql/ here. Would this be a viable alternative.

SQL Server 2005 Express - Service Pack 2 Uninstall !??

Jan 18, 2008

Hello All:

On my backup server running Symantec BackupExec 11D, I wanted to install Service Pack 2 for SQL Server 2005 Express. I started performing the update using "Windows Update", but cancelled the upgrade process just before it started to install (right after the downloading/verifying download phase of Windows update).

Now when I try to find the SP2 update using Windows Update, it doesnt show up on the update website. Rebooting the server doesnt help. I manually downloaded the file for SQL 2005 Express SP2 and tried installing it, but it says "the component is already installed" and I have to exit the process.

BackupExec 11D is running fine as of now, and it might not face problems later.. but I am not sure. Is there any way to uninstall SP2 and re-install it again!??

Any guidance/pointers is greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot in advance.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB 921896)

Jan 24, 2008

I am having trouble installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB 921896). When I go to Microsoft Update Home, it is the only update listed as available for my computer and I am trying to download and install it, but every time I do it fails with the error message:

€śSome updates were not installed

The following updates were not installed:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB 921896)"

This has been going on since the beginning of December, and I have a strange feeling that there are updates that I am not getting because this one keeps failing. I have other Windows XP machines with SQL Server 2005 and they have consistently been getting updates fine. This seems to be the only one. (please note that I have not been keeping track of the KB numbers of every update so it is possible that my other machines have not encountered this specific update.) I have also tried killing all of the services associated with SQL thinking that it couldn't update the program while running, but that did not solve the problem.

Any suggestions on why this won't install? Thank you in advance.

SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 Causes Machine Lock Up

May 30, 2006

When doing the service pack 1 install on a client side the machine is locking up on a specific file. The tech who tried it out doesn't remember the exact file name but he thinks it ended with an .msb or .msp

I checked in the C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGFiles directory and none of the files have been updated.

Thoughts?
