Problem With Making A Sqldatasource For Inserting Using The Query Builder

Aug 19, 2007

I want to make a sqldatasource to insert data ito a table with values from textfields page. I want to use the sqldatasource programically (not bind it to a formcontrol).

I drag a sqldatasource from the toolbox to the design surface and start configuring the datasource. I spesify a custom sql statement, select the "Insert" tab and insert the table I want to store into the builder. Then I select the fields and the values (parameters from tue textfields. I test it with the "Execute query" button and the results is stored in the table. (everything seems ok) I press the "OK" button but both the "Next" and "Finish" buttons are dissabled, o I can not store the query.

What is going wrong. Can someone please help me ?

Inserting Variables Into A Query Using SqlDataSource

Jan 4, 2008

 Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone can help me figure out how to insert a
variable into a query using Visual Studio 2005 with the SqlDataSource
control. I cant seem to be able to enter a var into the query
parameters.

this is my SqlDataSource:
        <asp: SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server"
ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:imLookinLikeConnectionString
%>"            DeleteCommand="DELETE FROM [tblDiaryEntries] WHERE [DiaryEntryID] = @DiaryEntryID"
SelectCommand="SELECT tblDiaryEntries.DiaryEntryID,
tblDiaryEntries.EntryDate, tblDiaryEntries.Subject,
tblDiaryEntries.DiaryEntry, aspnet_Users.UserName FROM tblDiaryEntries
INNER JOIN aspnet_Users ON tblDiaryEntries.UserID = aspnet_Users.UserId
WHERE UserName=@UserName ORDER BY tblDiaryEntries.EntryDate DESC"
UpdateCommand="UPDATE [tblDiaryEntries] SET [DiaryEntry] = @DiaryEntry,
[EntryDate] = @EntryDate, [Subject] = @Subject WHERE [DiaryEntryID] =
@DiaryEntryID" InsertCommand="INSERT INTO tblDiaryEntries(UserID,
EntryDate, Subject, DiaryEntry) VALUES (@UserId, GETDATE(), @Subject,
@DiaryEntry)">            <DeleteParameters>                <asp: Parameter Name="DiaryEntryID" Type="Int32" />            </DeleteParameters>            <UpdateParameters>                <asp: Parameter Name="DiaryEntry" Type="String" />                <asp: Parameter Name="EntryDate" Type="String" />                <asp: Parameter Name="Subject" Type="String" />                <asp: Parameter Name="DiaryEntryID" Type="Int32" />            </UpdateParameters>            <InsertParameters>                <asp: Parameter Name="DiaryEntry" Type="String" />                <asp: Parameter Name="EntryDate" Type="String" />                <asp: Parameter Name="Subject" Type="String" />                <asp: ProfileParameter DefaultValue="Anonymous" Name="UserName" PropertyName="UserName" />                <asp: Parameter Name="UserId" />            </InsertParameters>            <SelectParameters>                <asp: ProfileParameter DefaultValue="Anonymous" Name="UserName" PropertyName="UserName" />            </SelectParameters>        </asp: SqlDataSource>
What I want to do is to tell the SqlDataSource that  @UserName = this.User.Identity.Name, but I only know how to do that in
code-behind, not sure how to insert it into the code above.Any ideas?

Sqldatasource Control Inserting Problems

Oct 6, 2006

I set up a Sqldatasource control in 2.0 and I can retrieve data through a SQL Server connection from a stored procedure.  My problem is when I set up the insert command object through the wizard for the Sqldatasource control with another stored procedure for inserting data and call the insert method of my Sqldatasource object i get nothing not even an error it just goes through the code like nothing was wrong and I don't get anything inserted.  I don't know if this could be a problem but one of the parameters in the stored procedure is declared like this: @return tinyint output. I don't know how the Sqldatasource accounts for return parameters.  Here is the code for the insert for the Sqldatasource object.<asp:SqlDataSource ID="sdsMain" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:SN_CUSTOMERConnectionString %>"InsertCommand="uspSNOrder_Promo_Live" InsertCommandType="StoredProcedure" SelectCommand="uspOPFillPromo"SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure"><InsertParameters><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ddlPromo" Name="promoid" PropertyName="SelectedValue"Type="Int32" /><asp:Parameter DefaultValue="1" Name="datasourceid" Type="Int32" /><asp:Parameter DefaultValue="0" Name="datasourcekey" Type="String" /><asp:Parameter DefaultValue="9" Name="salesroomid" Type="Int32" /><asp:Parameter DefaultValue="9999" Name="userid" Type="Int32" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtFName" DefaultValue="" Name="firstname" PropertyName="Text"Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtLName" Name="lastname" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtAddress" Name="address" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtCity" Name="city" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtState" Name="state" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtZip" Name="zip" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtPhone" Name="phone" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtEmail" Name="email" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ddlStatus" Name="status" PropertyName="SelectedValue"Type="Int32" /><asp:Parameter DefaultValue="0" Direction="InputOutput" Name="return" Type="Byte" /></InsertParameters></asp:SqlDataSource>Thanks in advance

SqlDataSource Inserting Event Error

Apr 12, 2007

Greetings,
When using Inserting event of SqlDataSource ASP.NET gives me an error when I reference InsertParameter by Name
An SqlParameter with ParameterName 'CreatedByEmployeeId' is not contained by this SqlParameterCollection.
However, when I reference parameter by index everything works.
Is this a bug or I'm doing something wrong?
Here's the code:
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="dsRole" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:SecurityConnectionString %>" DeleteCommand="spDeleteRole" InsertCommand="spAddRole" SelectCommand="spGetRole" UpdateCommand="spUpdateRole" DeleteCommandType="StoredProcedure" InsertCommandType="StoredProcedure" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure" UpdateCommandType="StoredProcedure">
<DeleteParameters>
<asp:Parameter Name="RoleId" Type="Int32" />
</DeleteParameters>
<UpdateParameters>
<asp:Parameter Name="RoleId" Type="Int32" />
<asp:Parameter Name="RoleName" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter Name="RoleDescription" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter Name="UpdatedByEmployeeId" Type="Int32" />
</UpdateParameters>
<InsertParameters>
<asp:Parameter Name="RoleName" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter Name="RoleDescription" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter Name="CreatedByEmployeeId" Type="Int32" />
</InsertParameters>
<SelectParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="GridView1" Name="RoleId" PropertyName="SelectedValue" />
</SelectParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>
When using parameter name, I get an error:
Protected Sub dsRole_Inserting(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSourceCommandEventArgs) Handles dsRole.Inserting
e.Command.Parameters("CreatedByEmployeeId").Value = Internal.Security.GetEmployeeIdFromCookie(Page.Request.Cookies)
End Sub
When using index instead of name, there's no problem:
Protected Sub dsRole_Inserting(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSourceCommandEventArgs) Handles dsRole.Inserting
e.Command.Parameters(2).Value = Internal.Security.GetEmployeeIdFromCookie(Page.Request.Cookies)
End Sub

Error Inserting UserId In Codebehind Using SqlDataSource.insert()

Feb 9, 2006

I have a database with columnsuserOwnListsuserID uniqueidentifieruserName nvarchar100userList nvrachar100createdDateI
have created successfully a gridview controller to edit these values in
database. The Gridview data is populated by SqlDataSource.I
have also created a EmptyDataTemplate  and created a form into it.
There is only one textBox and submit button to create the First entry
to userOwnLists -table.Now I collect the value from EmptyDataTemplate textbox with id userList1 and create a codebehind logic for the submitbutton.protected void Button2_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)    {        TextBox listName = (TextBox)this.FindControl("listName1", GridView1.Controls);SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["userId"].DefaultValue = Membership.GetUser().ProviderUserKey;        SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["userName"].DefaultValue = Membership.GetUser().UserName.ToString();        SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["listName"].DefaultValue = listName.Text;        SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["createdDate"].DefaultValue = DateTime.Now.ToString();        SqlDataSource1.Insert();    }The problem is now that I get error: Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException:
Implicit conversion from data type sql_variant to uniqueidentifier is
not allowed. Use the CONVERT function to run this query.OK.  So I Googled a bit and found this:http://scottonwriting.net/sowblog/posts/4690.aspxMy Question is: How do I convert userId so I can insert it to database successfully?This does not work:String userId = Membership.GetUser().ProviderUserKey.ToString();        SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["userId"].DefaultValue = Convert.ToString(userId);

Inserting TextBox Values To Database Using SqlDataSource.Insert Method

Oct 25, 2006

Hi, it is few days I posted here my question, but received no answer. Maybe the problem is just my problem, maybe I put my question some strange way. OK, I try to put it again, more simply. I have few textboxes, their values I need to transport to database. I set SqlDataSource, parameters... and used SqlDataSource.Insert() method. I got NULL values in the database's record. So I tried find problem by using Microsoft's sample code from address http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.webcontrols.sqldatasource.insert.aspx. After some changes I tried that code and everything went well, data were put into database. Next step was to separate code beside and structure of page to two separate files followed by new test. Good again, data were delivered to database. Next step: to use MasterPage, very simple, just with one ContentPlaceHolder. After this step the program stoped to deliver data to database and delivers only NULLs to new record. It is exactly the same problem which I have found in my application. The functionless code is here:http://forums.asp.net/thread/1437716.aspx I cannot find any answer this problem on forums worldwide. I cannot believe it is only my problem. I compared html code of two generated pages - with maserPage and without. There are differentions in code in ids' of input fields generated by NET.Framework:Without masterpage:<input name="NazevBox" type="text" id="NazevBox" /><span id="RequiredFieldValidator1" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a company name.</span><p><input name="CodeBox" type="text" id="CodeBox" /><span id="RequiredFieldValidator2" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a phone number.</span><p><input type="submit" name="Button1" value="Insert New Shipper" onclick="javascript:WebForm_DoPostBackWithOptions(new WebForm_PostBackOptions(&quot;Button1&quot;, &quot;&quot;, true, &quot;&quot;, &quot;&quot;, false, false))" id="Button1" /> With masterpage:<input name="ctl00$Obsah$NazevBox" type="text" id="ctl00_Obsah_NazevBox" /><span id="ctl00_Obsah_RequiredFieldValidator1" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a company name.</span><p><input name="ctl00$Obsah$CodeBox" type="text" id="ctl00_Obsah_CodeBox" /><span id="ctl00_Obsah_RequiredFieldValidator2" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a phone number.</span><p><input type="submit" name="ctl00$Obsah$Button1" value="Insert New Shipper" onclick="javascript:WebForm_DoPostBackWithOptions(new WebForm_PostBackOptions(&quot;ctl00$Obsah$Button1&quot;, &quot;&quot;, true, &quot;&quot;, &quot;&quot;, false, false))" id="ctl00_Obsah_Button1" />In second case ids' of input fields have different names, but I hope it is inner business of NET.Framework.There must be something I haven't noticed, maybe NET's bug, maybe my own. Thanks for any suggestion.

Making A SQL Update Query Run Once

Aug 22, 2005

I have a datagrid in my file along with an Update Query.

My Update Query basically adds the numerical values in two columns
together when the page is loaded. This means whenever the page is
Refreshed the Update query is fired.

This is my Update Query (which is in an Stored Procedure):

UPDATE Rental
SET TotalFee = ExtraFee + TotalFee
WHERE DaysOverdue >= 0

I have declared my query in the 'Page_Load' part of the coding, because
I want the query to run automatically. Not manually by a button.

My main question is that how can I get the query to run only once a day, no matter how many times the page is loaded.

Making Two Sums In One Query

Jun 10, 2006

Hi

Im new in this forum so don't if this is the right place to post these kind of questions..

Im using vb2005 and have made a program that deals with customers and payments.

I have a table called acount. Roughly it contains these columns

Number, amount, type..

type can be a payment or a charge

I would like to have a query that gives me this result:

Number, sum(payments), sum(charges) (grouped by number)

I think it is some type of merging these to querys

select number, sum(amount) where type = 0 group by number

and

select number, sum(amount) where type <> 0 group by number

Im using it to calculate a customers acount to see if they have paid to much or to little.

Any ideas?

Slow Performance When Making A Query

Making A Wide Table -- SQL Query

Sep 24, 2004

Hi Guys,
I have a requirement as follows:->

I have a table like below

EMPLOYEEID------- OWNS
********** ****
1-----------------car
1-----------------house
1-----------------dog
2-----------------house
3-----------------car
3-----------------bus
3-----------------shop
3-----------------hotel
3-----------------theater
3-----------------casino

Requirement:
I wanted to create another table based on the column values. For eg: I have to take the employee id and check for what value he has under owns column in the table. I take only 3 values and then these values should go to the newly created columns (owns1, owns2,owns3).
if there is no value for any of these columns it should have null values loaded in them.
The result of the modification should look like this:->

EMPLOYEEID-------OWNS1------OWNS2------OWNS3
*********** ***** ***** *
1-----------------car--------house------dog
2-----------------house------Null-------Null
3-----------------car--------Bus--------shop

Note: eventhough employeeid 3 owns more than 3 things we only take 3 of what he owns and populate to above coloumns.
In addition to it, the column OWNS will have more than 500 different values in them.

Its kind of urgent and if anyone knows how to , Can you please help me on this.
Thanks a lot.

Using Local Variable Making The Query Slow

May 28, 2008

Hi,

I am using a local variable to capture datetime and then select records from another table by making use of the above local variable result. But the query is running too slow when I use the local variable

declare @a smalldatetime
select @a=last_run_time from job_status
where job_des='sample'

SELECT * FROM History
WHERE CHANGE_DATE> @a

Instead of the above select statement if I use the below statement it is returning results quickly. Can someone help me in tuning the above query.
SELECT * FROM History
WHERE CHANGE_DATE> '5/23/2008 6:22:00.000 AM '

History table has columns ( case number, change_date, change_desc). I have two indexes defined on the above table one is on case_number and the other on change_date.I tried using force index but still the query is running slow.

will there be any difference if use dynamic sql ?

Making A Query Have Flexible Index Utilization

Apr 29, 2008

I have one query that looks like this.

DECLARE @propname

SET @propname = NULL -- can be Null or have wild card values

SELECT col1, col2, col3, propertyname FROM testtable where col1 = 1 and col2 = 2 and col3 = 3 and (@propname IS NULL OR propertyname LIKE @propname)

col1, col2, col3 are part of a clustered index

propertyname is a nonclustered index

This is the predicament. If the "@propname is NULL" is first in the OR statement then the query will use the clustered index for finding the record. If I put "@propname is NULL" last then it uses the propertyname index no matter what. So I either get full index scans if NULL is ever used on property names or I get consistent two second long searches on the clustered index. Any way to have the best of both worlds? Or do I have to divide up my query into more stored procedures?

THANKS

MDX Query Builder

Apr 13, 2007

Good day,

I would like to know if there are any good MDX query builder tools out there. The one that is shipped with AS does not suffice in that it does not support more than 2 axes. Also if there are any are there any that make life a little easier in that they are drag and drop and all but create the statement for you?

I need to create a matrix in SSRS using cubes and in doing so need to write MDX queries, not my strong point. Are there any tools that can help me "auto create" the statement with drag and drop functionality?

Thanks in advance

Query Builder Bug?

Sep 12, 2006

HI, in a lookup component, when I want to use the query builder, it will show tables from a different connection manager than the one I picked for being the lookup source. E.g. connection manager A points to a schema that contains table1 and table2 and connection manager B points to a schema that contains table 5 and table 6.

When I configure the lookup component to use connection manager B, I still see connection manager A tablles; isntead of seeing table 5 and 6 I see table 1 and 2.

Am I missing something?

Thank you for your help,
Cctoe

Writing A Query Builder

Apr 29, 2007

Hi All,
For one of our projects, we are supposed to write a query builder to display reports in tabular format. For the filter criteria ( i.e where clause ) user can select from a list of predefined columns and assign conditions to it. For example, user can select 'CustomerName' as the column and specify condition where name begines with 'A'. Similarly he can also select ouput columns
Problem
The columns that user selects can come from different tables. We are planning to store mapping between tables and columns and also their primary and foreign keys in an xml file. But I would want to understand how to build the join clause.
For example, say there are 4 tables customer,  customer address, order, and items. Say user wants the number of items purchased by each customer who stays in 'Delhi'.
1. In output column he selects customer.name and count(items.id)
2. In filter criteria he selects address.city = 'delhi'
How would the query builder know that to join customer and items, order also has to be joined. Any pointers would be helpful.

DTS Query Builder - Using Nulls

Jan 20, 2004

I am trying to emulate the "Find unmatched Records" Access Query using DTS. I have a small table with a list of codes that I need to use to exclude records in my text export.

I have created a left outer join and set the criteria for the joined field in the 'right' table to be null. I am repeatedly getting no records as a result.

Wouldn't the joined field in the right table for unmatched records by default be null? I'm stumped as to why this seamingly simple process won't work for me. I have attached the select statement for your review.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mining Query Builder

Jun 19, 2006

On pages 123, 124 of Data Mining with SQL Server 2005, I can't finish the example. When I add 'Monthly' to the end of the expression "[Home Owners].[Theater Freq]" in the Criteria/Argument column, I usually get an error message saying the syntax is incorrect when I switch to the Results view. If I place a dot after the original expression, like this: [Home Owners].[Theater Freq].Monthly, I get an error message that "The dot expression is not allowed in the context at line 4, column 23. Use sub-SELECT instead." What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Why I Can't Save Query In Query Builder?

Feb 23, 2007

Either edit the query from Dataset edit dialog or in the query builder (switch the design mode to show the query string), I can't save the query and always get the following error:

TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio
------------------------------

The query cannot be retrieved from the query builder.
Check the query for syntax errors.
Reporting Services will continue to use the most recent valid query.

------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Query preparation failed. (Microsoft.AnalysisServices.Controls)

------------------------------

I am sure there isn't syntax error in the query string because I only add a space after a comma.

Accessing Data From VB6 - Query Builder&#39;s

Jan 7, 1999

We have SQL Server 6.5 with an Access 8.0 front-end. We are about to re-write our front-end in VB6 using RDO. Obviously Access has a nice fast and easy to use query builder. My question therefore is - is there any such query builder that can be used within VB6 to simplify query writing ? Or do I have to write all query's and and stored procedures using straight SQL and/or stored procedures. I do not want to use Visdata as it doesn't appear up to the task.

Thankyou whoever helps

Paul
