Problem With Server Slowing Down Because Of High Amounts Of Users On At The Same Time!

Jan 24, 2008

The server being used is a Intel Xeon E5310 Clovertown 1.6GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache Socket 771 80W Quad-Core 2U Passive Processor.

The problem is that this server is slowing down everytime about 1000 users log into a forum which the server is running. I think that the server should be able to handle this many users with no problems but I am not sure if that is the case.. The problem is probably something to do with the SQL of the server I am guessing. The server is not mine but I want to help the owner of the server as well as the users who are trying to access this forum but cant because of this server issue. If I was able to get the SQL would I be able to fix this problem? I doubt you need this but the server url is www.smashboards.com

I am fairly new to servers and have never really set one up myself yet. Forgive me for my lack of knowledge about them.

-Thank you!

CLR Project Slowing Down SQL Server

Dec 4, 2006

I'm running into an issue when developing a clr project. I open the project to make changes and apparently it hoses up the sql server that I'm connecting to. I'm opening the CLR Project from a mapped drive on another computer. I can't figure out why just opening up the project causes the slow down. Any ideas.

Thanks,
Josh

DTS Database Transfer - Slowing Down The Server

May 29, 2001

We have a process here where a ~45Gb is copied from DB1 to DB2 (both on the same server) using the Export Data wizard and choosing the "Transfer objects and data between SQL Server 7.0 databases" - All the defaults are left as is.

Under 6.5 this method took around 24 - 26 hours, now with SQL 7.0 (SP3) it takes about 16 hours. That's great execpt towards the end of the copy it seems to be hogging most of the server resources - although the processors aren't mazed out.

Users of the other databases are having queries take 5+ mins when they normally come back in < 5 seconds. As soon as the copy finishes there query time return to 'normal'.

Anyone any ideas on where to start looking or how to analyse this problem.

Thanks in advance.

PageIOLatch Slowing Server To A Halt

Oct 2, 2007

We're having problems with our SQL 2000 SP3 standard server (on Win 2k3). Our quasi-data-warehouse application does data processing on feeds of approximately 7 million records. Once the data is loaded in the queries against that data and updates against large tables will often wait with PAGEIOLATCH_SH contention. To give an example, over 7 million rows I was testing something out in development and issued: UPDATE <Table> SET <VarcharColumn> = null, which took forever (over an hour) with the PAGEIOLATCH problem....meanwhile someone else using another database was completely blocked from making an update during that time. It seems like something is very wrong.

The server has 4 drives spinning at 15k rpm with some sort of a high end raid controller, so I'm sure it's not a slow i/o subsystem.

Has anyone experienced this behavior before? Is this an issue that's resolved in 2000 SP4?

Thanks in advance,
-Mark

Sql Server 2000 Randomly Slowing Down

Jan 22, 2008

Hello there,

I have a SQL Server 2000 with a dozen of databases. The databases are rather small (all sum up to 10 GB).

The entire server gets extremelly slow from time to time (lasting a few days when it happens and suddently coming back to normality). A profiler trace doesn't show anything strange (besides a lot of SQL Agent entries).

I pretty much tried to isolate every single application that makes use of the databases in that server and see if it was the cause of the problem, but I couldn't find any correlation.

I know the computer where this server runs is quite fragmented. Is there any way I could make sure this is the cause of my performance issues?

I don't know if this might help, but once the server simply went down for some 3 hours, and I wasn't able to bring it up in any way. It eventually started working again by itself. The only thing I did in the meantime was to run DBCC CHECKDB a few times, always getting the response "No errors found on the database".

Any hint on that?

SQL Server 2000 Query Slowing Down In SQL Server 2005

Aug 14, 2006

Hi everybody,

I have a query slower in SQL Server 2005 than in SQL Server 2000. I have a database in SQL 2000, I put it on the same server, but with SQL 2005 and the query take 5 seconds instead of 0 seconds. The DB compatibility is SQL Server 2000 (I tried with 2005 and result is the same). Execution plan seems right and I tried to change some DB options without results. It is weird, when I remove left join on MandatsEx, it take 2 seconds. The view currentEmployeeLevelHistoric returns 45 000 rows and mandatsex has 0 rows.

Here is the sample:

SQL 2012 :: TEMPDB High Avg Write Wait Time On Data Files

Apr 15, 2014

I am currently investigating aa high avg write time ms issue (145ms) which seems to be only occuring on the tempdb data files.I have followed the recommended setup of TEMPDB in that

1. Data files = number of physical cores
2. Data files and logfiles are on separate partitions away from the other databases.
3. Tempdb is presized and no incremental file increases look like they are happening with frequency.

We have sharepoint 2012 setup on other sql servers and with TEMPDB setup following the same guidelines, with far more Sharepoint activity on a similary specified hardware which is why its confusing.FileIO auditing on the partitions themselves shows that the FileIO is very fast on the partitions that the tempdb data file which leads me to beleive that Sharepoint may be the culprit perhaps due to excess use of tempdb with operations taking a long time to resolve.

High Insertions / Updates On A System With Real-time / Online / Live Reporting?

Jul 20, 2015

I am trying to understand an environment and provide a solution to Banking system so that they can enter user data (transactions) online and at the same time we can provide users online reporting as well. Using same sql server or server/hardware on other machine.

There are so many branches/customers/ATM machines accessing online data as well as updating their balances. I want to understand how can we provide online reporting. Through replication, transaction log backup, log shipping or what other solution is available. I need to understand this and provide a solution that is already implemented running/successfully. Need some proposals and their pros and cons. cost and maintenance are the constraints with the real time reporting on live system/database.

Replication Performance Degrade In Unidirectional Direction And Lock Time Out (Update Are High Than Inserts)

Feb 21, 2007

We recently implemented merge replication. We were expereincing. The replication is between 2 SQL Servers (2005) over same network box, and since we have introduced the replication, the performance has degraded considerably on subscriber end.

1)   One thing that should be mention is that its a "unidirectional Direction" flow of changes is from publisher towards subscriber (only one publisher and distributor as well and one subscriber ).

2) Updates are high than inserts and only one article let say "Article1" ave update up to 2000 per day and i am experiecing that dbo.MSmerge_upd_sp_Article1_GUID taking more cpu time.what should be do..

on subscriber database  response time is going to slow and i am experiencing a lot of number of LOCK time outs on application end.

can any one can also suggest me server level settings for aviding locking time out.

looking for any experieced solution/suggestion.

Thanks in advance.

High Availability To High Protection Without Reconfiguring Mirroring

Apr 23, 2007

Hi,

Is there a way to configure mirroring to go from High Availability to High Protection without having to reconfigure Database Mirroring? Using the interface in Management Studio, I can change the configuration option to High Performance, but not High Protection despite both of them being Synchronous.

If not, what are the recommended steps to configure the mirror once it already has been configured? Is just like initially setting up the mirror or would there be any shortcuts I could take? If I stop the mirroring and remove the witness, will the High Protection option be available?

Thanks,
J.

High Safety Changed To High Performance After Fail Over ?

Mar 6, 2008

Hi There

I realise this is a stupid quesiton but i cannot really find any confirmation of this in BOL.

If you are running High Safety with automatic failover, when failover occurs does this automatically change to High Performance mode. SInce for failover to occur something has happen with the primary , it will be impossible to commit transactions on the new primary and mirror asyncronously since 1 of them is no longer available.

So am i correct in assuming that automatic failover also automatically changes the mode to High Performacne for that session?

Migrating Large Amounts Of Data From SQL Server 7.0 To 2000

Jul 20, 2005

I'm in the process of migrating a lot of data (millions of rows, 4GB+of data) from an older SQL Server 7.0 database to a new SQL Server2000 machine.Time is not of the essence; my main concern during the migration isthat when I copy in the new data, the new database isn't paralyzed bythe amount of bulk copying being one. For this reason, I'm splittingthe data into one-month chunks (the data's all timestamped and goesback about 3 years), exporting as CSV, compressing the files, and thenimporting them on the target server. The reason I'm using CSV isbecause we may want to also copy this data to other non-SQL Serversystems later, and CSV is pretty universal. I'm also copying in thisformat because the target server is remotely hosted and is notaccessible by any method except FTP and Remote Desktop -- nodatabase-to-database copying allowed for security reasons. My questions:1) Given all of this, what would be the least intrusive way to copyover all this data? The target server has to remain running and berelatively uninterrupted. One of the issues that goes hand-in-handwith this is indexes: should I copy over all the data first and thencreate indexes, or allow SQL Server to rebuild indexes as I go?2) Another option is to make a SQL Server backup of the database fromthe old server, upload it, mount it, and then copy over the data. I'mworried that this would slow operations down to a crawl, though, whichis why I'm taking the piecemeal approach.Comments, suggestions, raw fish?

Best Way To Enable Users To Choose Between WTD/MTD/QTD/YTD At Run Time (MDX)

Jun 7, 2007

Hi there - I have a longish bit of MDX which enable some MTD reporting. I'd like to power up the report so that users can select to report by WTD, QTD, YTD by clicking hyperlinks / buttons / whatever [I'm quite new to reporting services - not quite sure what's possible.]

I could create 4 separate reports with 4 separate datasets, or one report with 4 datasets, or is there some reasonable way I can tweak the MDX for a dataset on the fly, e.g. "search and replace, find MTD replace with QTD" &c &c.

Cheers,

Best Way To Insert Large Amounts Of Data From A Webform To SQL Server 2005

Oct 21, 2007

HiI have a VB.net web page which generates a datatable of values (3 columns and on average about 1000-3000 rows). What is the best way to get this data table into an SQL Server? I can create a table on SQL Server no problem but I've found simply looping through the datatable and doing 1000-3000 insert statements is slow (a few seconds). I'd like to make this as streamlined as possible so was wondering is there is a native way to insert all records in a batch via ADO.net or something.Any ideas?ThanksEd

SQL Server Storing Large Amounts Of Data In Multiple Tables

Jul 20, 2005

Hello,Currently we have a database, and it is our desire for it to be ableto store millions of records. The data in the table can be divided upby client, and it stores nothing but about 7 integers.| table || id | clientId | int1 | int2 | int 3 | ... |Right now, our benchmarks indicate a drastic increase in performanceif we divide the data into different tables. For example,table_clientA, table_clientB, table_clientC, despite the fact thetables contain the exact same columns. This however does not seem veryclean or elegant to me, and rather illogical since a database existsas a single file on the harddrive.| table_clientA || id | clientId | int1 | int2 | int 3 | ...| table_clientB || id | clientId | int1 | int2 | int 3 | ...| table_clientC || id | clientId | int1 | int2 | int 3 | ...Is there anyway to duplicate this increase in database performancegained by splitting the table, perhaps by using a certain type ofindex? Thanks,Jeff BrubakerSoftware Developer

Convert Tick-by-tick Stock Price Time Series Data Grouped As High, Low, Open And Close Prices

Dec 3, 2006

I am working on a stock price analysis project. Stock prices are stored in SQL Server as tick by tick data (that means in a high frequency) and need to be grouped by minutes in order to display them as as high, low, open and close prices in a candlestick or similar chart.

The fields in the table are:

Time (for every stock price tick)
Price (stock price)
Symbol (of the stock)

A sample time series would look like this:

11:45:01 $22.11 MSFT
11:45:02 $22.10 MSFT
11:45:04 $22.25 MSFT
...
...
...
11:45:58 $22.45 MSFT
11:46:03 $22.22 MSFT
11:46:08 $22.25 MSFT
...
...
...
11:46:59 $22.45 MSFT

The result of the SQL query should be:

Symbol Time Open High Low Close
MSFT 11:45 $22.11 $22.45 $22.10 $22.45
MSFT 11:46 $22.22 $22.45 $22.22 $22.45

This is the SQL statement I came up with but obviously doesn't work:

SELECT DATEPART(Minute,Time), MIN(Price), MAX(Price) FROM dbo.TimeSales WHERE Symbol='MSFT' GROUP BY DATEPART(Minute,Time)

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you!

Can anyone explain why removing the indexes should speed it up?This is on SQL Server 7.CheersDave

Stored Proc Parameters Slowing Down Execution Majorly!

Jan 15, 2008

Hello:

Interestingly enough, I haven't come across this before. I have a SQL stored procedure which takes four parameters; periodstartdate (datetime), periodenddate (end time), hsgradyearstart (int), hsgradyearend (int)

[dbo].[CalculateActivityTotal]

-- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here

@periodstartdate datetime = '2007-01-01',

@periodenddate datetime = '2007-01-08',

@hsgradyearstart int = 1900,

@hsgradyearend int = 2007
AS...

If I run the stored procedure and pass the parameters using EXEC or

sp_executesql "CalculateActivityTotal '2008-01-04 12:00:00', '2008-01-11 12:00:00', 1900, 2008"

the stored proc takes well over ten minutes to run (it does a bunch of aggregation). If I modify the stored procedure to take no parameters, however, and I hardcode the dates in the stored proc using declare and set then it runs in 13 seconds. What could be causing my problem and how I can I go about resolving this? I need to pass the parameters via reporting server. Thanks!

SQL Server 2005 High CPU

Nov 15, 2007

We have a live server that has had very high CPU usage in the last few days, therefore the site is extremely slow. There are about 60,000 users per day on the average. It always had high CPU usage, but not as bad as in the last few days, in the 90s, sometimes even reaching a 100.

Any solutions? I've run SQl Profiler to check on queries that have high CPU usage. When I run the same queries on our staging server, they are very quick. For example, the same query can take 1 minute on stage, but 12 minutes on the live site. We do know that this is also related to traffic, during lower traffic times, the same query takes less time, but still never as fast as stage.

Oh yeah, it's SQL Server 2005 and asp code running IIS6 on windows 2003 server.

Please help. I really appreciate any advice. Thank you.

It is Windows Server 2003 with hyper-threading turn on.There are ~420 .Net users/cxns (fat client, no web/app servers) withconnection pooling and ~1 trx/sec. The database growth is neglegeableand actually is not even relevent which I will explain in a minute.99% of the trxs are from one SP that does a select. The resultsets arerelatively small as well 1~100 rows. Yes I have tuned it with indextuning wizard as well, changed the SQL memory configurations, etc....My problem is this...The first day after a reboot, the server runs 6%CPU during peak hours.During the non-peak hours until the next day something apparentlyhappens. The next day (2nd day after a reboot), it jumps to 40%CPUduring peak hours. The server will continue to run at 40%CPU duringpeak hours until the next reboot. This phenomenon has been occurringfor 6 months or more and the traffic on the server is the same for day1 as it is for day 2,3,4,... This database was on another server with100+ dbs and exibited the same behavior, thus bringing that server toits knees, and thus we had to move it to the server in question with noother dbs.I have googled my eyes out, Microsoft site, white papers, perfmon,SQLDiag, PSSDiag, execution plans, index tuning wizard, and the listgoes on! I currently have a case open with Microsoft that has beenopen for months now. I have been passed around to the 3rd "MS TechSpecialist". I have ran PSSDiag a total of 6 times for them for hourson end. I have changed MAXDOP. I could give more information, but Iwould be here for days. I am running out of patience/ideas andMicrosoft is apparently blowing smoke.Any ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!JL

SQl Server Using High Virtual Memory

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,We have a prod server running on SQL server 2000 64 bit. It is a4cpu server with 16GB of RAM. we have a maxmemory setting of 15.5GBfor sql server. Inspite of 15GB being available for sql server, itstill uses paging file space, a lot. When looking thru task maanger wecan see sql server using 15.5GB of Memory usage and 22GB of Virtualmemory usage. I don't understand why it should even be using closer to7GB of Paging space, when it has so much memory. How does SQl serveruse Virtual memeory vs Physical memory?HAs anyone seen this before.ThanksGG
