Problems With Remote SQL 2005 Server And Excel As An Input Source

Jan 5, 2006

Hello,

I am trying to write my first couple Integration Services packages using SQL 2005.  My configuration is a workstation running windows xp professional, and a windows 2003 server that is running the SQL server.

Anytime I run a package that accesses the remote server from my workstation, the job fails with an error code.  The workstation cannot seem to run a package to load data to the remote sql server.  Why is this?  Is there a service pack, or hotfix coming out soon to correct this problem?

Additionally, I also seem to be unable to update a database using excel as the data source from which information should be used.  If I import my excel spreadsheet into an access table, I can update the sql database from Access using integration services.  Why can't I use an excel spreadsheet as the source?  Is there a a service pack or hotfix coming out soon for 2005 sql that will correct this problem?

Thanks!

Jim

SQL Server Express 2005 And A Remote Data Source

Jul 24, 2007

I'm using SQL Server 2005 Express, Windows XP SP2. I connect using Windows authentication.

The data source that I'm trying to hit is on a remote server. It's an OpenLink ODBC Data source, and the server is in another location. SQL Server 2005 Express and the ODBC connection are both installed/configured locally on my machine.

I can connect to the remote server. The DSN exists as a System DSN.

The DSN has its own proprietary configuration utility, which I can configure so that the server name is XPLILLEYGSQLEXPRESS. The configuration utility doesn't care; I connect successfully one way or the other.

When I open Management Studio Express, I can see my database (CMS) listed under the "Databases" folder, but there's no tables in there, other than the system tables.

So my question is, what am I missing?

Thanks

The Product Level Is Insufficient For Component Excel Source In Remote Scenario

Nov 20, 2007

Hello,

I have a production machine and a developer machine with Ms SQL Server Management Studio I connected remotly to the integration services hosted in the production machine. Then I exported a package and then, when it was executed, I had the following error:

"the product level is insufficient for component excel source"

So I thought that it was because the excel file that I was trying to upload was in the developer machine, so I pointed the Excel Data Source to a shared folder but I still having the same error.

I have read another posts but I'm afraid because the conclusion is that I have to install the SSIS in the developer machine, I hope I misunderstood the solutions!!!

please help, thanks

Loading Data Using Ole Db Source With Input Source Being A View

Dec 13, 2007

I was trying to load data using SSIS, Data Flow Task, OLE DB Source, source was a view to a OLE DB Destination (SQL Server). This view returns 420,591 rows from Query Analyzer in 21 seconds. Row length is 925. When I try to executed the Data Flow Task from SSIS, I had to stop the process after 30 minutes, because only 2,000 rows had been retrieved. I modified the view to retun top 440, 000 and reran. This time all 420, 591 rows were retrieved and written in 22 seconds. Next, I tried to use a TOP 100 Percent. Again, only 2,000 rows were return after 30 minutes. TempDB is on a separate SAN Raid group with 200 gig free, Databases on a separate drive with 200 gig free. Server has 13 gig of memory and no other processes were executing.

The only way I could populate the table was by using an Execute SQL Task and hard code an Insert into table selecting data from the view (35 seconds) from SSIS.

Have anyone else experience this or a similar issue? Anyone have a solutionexplanation?

I am using a Excel Source to get the data from an excel file to sql server 2005 table. A couple columns are coming in a double precision float, but some values have characters in them, but those values are coming out as null, even though I changed the datatype from float to unicode string. Any inputs on resolving this will be much appreciated.

How To Pass The Excel Sheet Names To The Excel Source Control Through Variables

Feb 22, 2006

I am trying to get the contents of the Excel Files dynamically and dumping into the SQL Database using SSIS. Through WMI Event Watcher, I could find when one or more Excel files dumped in a particular folder and using ForEach Loop Container I was able to take all the filenames and pass it through Variables. But at the same time in the Data Flow, I have to pass each Sheet of an Excel File to the Excel Source control and export the data to my SQL Database using OLEDB Destination.

For that I need to get the names of each sheets in an Excel File and pass it to the Excel Source Control through variables. But when I give Data Access Mode as "Table name or view name variable" and provide the variable name in that, then it is giving an error message as "A destination table name has not been provided".

And at the same time, Since I was not able to provide an static Filename (as I am passing through Variables), when I tried to map the columns in the OleDB Destination, it is not allowing me to map the columns.

So all these things I should do at Run-time using Variables in SSIS. I don't want to hard-code any filenames or Sheet names. If any one of you have a solution, please share with me.

Problem With Retreving A Excel Data Through Excel Source Component.

Sep 18, 2007

Hello,

I have a problem with retreving a excel data through excel source component.

I have source component as Excel Source which will connect to my .xls sheet.
To retrieve the values from the sheet i am using a query as,
"SELECT F14,F3 FROM [Charac Defn & Assgnment$]"

The column F14 is not formatted so that the format of the cell is "General" I have a different type of values in the F14 column such as "PE","PES",15,20,20.00,8888.9999 etc..
While i click on preview button of Excel source it shows only the text values and not the int or decimal values, its returning NULL for those cells. I tried to use convert function, its throwing an error as

TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio
------------------------------
There was an error displaying the preview.
------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Undefined function 'Convert' in expression. (Microsoft JET Database Engine)

Is there any other function to change the format of the cell or i need to some thing else
Please help me how to solve this issue.

While importing data from Excel source , some column is getting null value even though excel column has value. To Resolve the issue we tried with

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftOffice14.0Access Connectivity EngineEnginesExcel

1.Change the Value  of the Row TypeGuessRows from 8 (Default value) to 0  and ImportMixedType = text

• xls
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftJet4.0EnginesExcel

1.Change the Value  of the Row TypeGuessRows from 8 (Default value) to 0  and ImportMixedType = text

the connection string of the excel

UPPER(REVERSE(SUBSTRING( REVERSE(@[User::VarInputExcelFile]), 1, 5) ) ) == ".XLSX" ? "Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source=" + @[User::VarInputExcelFile] + ";Extended Properties="Excel 12.0;HDR=Yes;IMEX=1";":"Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data

by doing the above setting also , the column is coming as null from excel source even though there is data in excel.

Using SSIS 2005 To Strip Out Bad Rows In Excel And Then Insert Detailed Rows Into OLE DB Data Source

Apr 6, 2006

Environment:

Running this code on my PC via VS 2005
.Net version 2.0.50727 on the server (shown in IIS)
Code is in ASP.NET 2.0 and is a VB.NET Console application
SSIS 2005

Problem & Info:

I am bringing in an Excel file.  I need to first strip out any non-detail rows such as the breaks you see with totals and what not.  I should in the end have only detail rows left before I start moving them into my SQL Table.  I'm not sure how to first strip this information out in SSIS specfically how down to the right component and how to actually code the component to do this based on my Excel file here: http://www.webfound.net/excelfile.xls

Then, I assume I just use a Flat File Source coponent or something to actually take the columns in the Excel and split into an OLE DB Datasource to shove each column into a corresponding column in my SQL Server Table.  I have used a Flat File Source in the past to do so with a comma delimited txt file but never tried with an Excel.

Desired Help:

How to perform

1)       stripping out all undesired rows
2)       importing each column into sql table

How To Provide An Input Parameter For A SqlDataSource Using The Different Source Alternatives???

Jan 11, 2006

Hello everybody,
I'm new using ASP 2.0,  I was trying to find out how do i tell a SqlDataSource the parameters it will be using for the select query.  I was looking at the Configure Data Source wizard and when I press the where botton to create the parameters, I do not know how two of the available Source selections work which are: (Query String, and Session). What I want to understand is how do I pass the parameter value during the form load like I used to do with ASP 1.1.
I used to write: during the pageload event:
me.dataAdapter.selectparameter("@param").value = [myVar]
me.dataAdapter.fill(Me.ds)

I tried to do something like this for the SqlDataSource but didnt work.
can anyone tell me how can I acomplish this?

thanks a lot.

Dynamic OLE DB Table Source From Variable Not Seeing Input Columns

Dec 12, 2007

I am building an SSIS package that loops through a table in SQL Server and dynamically builds a select statement that i would like to use as an ole db source. I have been having a difficult time with this as the select statement that i am generating is over 200,000 characters long so using an sql variable is out of the question.

I ended up placing the select statement into a table where each row of the table represents a piece of the select. I then use an execute_sql task that selects the entire rowset from this table into a variable object. I then use a for each loop to shred the variable and concatenate it into on big string variable called user:: sql_statement that is my select.

After setting up the loop and testing to see if the user:: sql_statement variable populates correctly i then added a data flow transfer with an ole db source and destination. I then go into the advanced editor for the source and set it to accept an sql statement from a variable and use my user:: sql_statement variable. I was forced to set validate external metadata option to false to avoid an error since there is no way to validate the columns until the for each loop runs during run time.

Now thats all fine and good but what is causing my problem is that during run time, when the package gets to the data flow task, the select statement doesn't seem to be populating the input columns of the data source. I have been searching to no avail on a way to tell the data source to update the input columns but every time it gets there, the package bombs out telling me the ole db source has no available output columns.

Specifically the error i get is :
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: "output "OLE DB Source Output" (6616)" contains no output columns. An asynchronous output must contain output columns.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

How can I run a single SP by asking multiple sales question eitherby using the logical operator AND for all the questions; or usingthe logical operator OR for all the questions. So it's alwayseither AND or OR but never mixed together. We can use Northwind database for my question, it is very similarto the structure of the problem on the database I am working on.IF(SELECT OBJECT_ID('REPORT')) IS NOT NULLDROP TABLE REPORT_SELECTIONGOCREATE TABLE REPORT_SELECTION(AUTOID INT IDENTITY(1, 1) NOT NULL,REPSELNO INT NOT NULL, -- Idenitifies which report query this-- "sales question" is part ofSupplierID INT NOT NULL, -- from the Suppliers tableProductID INT NOT NULL, -- from the Products table, if you choose--a ProductID, SupplierID is selected also by inheritenceCategoryID INT NOT NULL, -- from the Categories tableSOLDDFROM DATETIME NULL, -- Sold from which dateSOLDTO DATETIME NULL, -- Sold to which dateMINSALES INT NOT NULL, -- The minimum amount of salesMAXSALES INT NOT NULL, -- The maximum amount of salesOPERATOR TINYINT NOT NULL -- 1 is logical operator AND, 2 is OR)GOINSERT INTO REPORT_SELECTIONSELECT 1, 1, 2, 1, '1/1/1996', '1/1/2000', 10, 10000, 1 UNION ALLSELECT 1, -1, -1, 1, '1/1/1996', '1/1/2000', 10, 1000, 1You can ask all kinds of sales questions like:1-I want all employees that sold products from supplierID 1(Exotic Liquids), specifically the ProductID 2 (Chang) from theCategoryID 1 (Beverages) between Jan 1 1996 to Jan 1 2000 and soldbetween $10 and $10000 - AND for my 2nd sales question2-I want all employees that sold CategoryID 1 (beverages) betweenJan 1 1996 to Jan 1 2000 and sold between $10 and $1000I want to get the common result of both questions and find outwhich employee(s) are in this list. Here are some of the points:1-I want my query to return the list of employees fitting theresult of my sales question(s).2-If I ask three questions with the logical operator AND, I wantthe list of employees that are common to all three questions.3-If I ask 2-3-4. questions with the logical operator OR, I wantthe list of employees that are in the list of the 1st "successful"sales question (the first question that returns any employee isgood enough)4-You can ask all kind of sales question you want even if theycontradict each other. The SP should still run and returnnothing if that is the case.5-Let's assume you can have the same product name from the samesupplier but under different categories. So entering a ProductIDshould not automatically enter the CategoryID also; whereasentering the ProductID should automatically enter its SupplierID.6-SOLDFROM, SOLDTO, MINSALES, MAXSALES, OPERATOR are mandatoryfields, you can't leave them NULL7-SupplierID, ProductID and CategoryID are the dynamic inputparameters, there can be 5 different combinations to choose from:a-SupplierID onlyb-SupplierID and a ProductID,c-SupplierID and a CategoryIDd-SupplierID, ProductID and a CategoryIDe-CategoryID onlyf-Any time you choose a ProductID, the SupplierID valuewill be filled automatically based on the ProductID'srelationshipg-Any of the three values here that is not chosen by theuser will take a default value of -1 (meaning return ALLfor this Column, in other words don't filter by this column)The major problem I have is I can't use dynamic SQL for choosingthe three dynamic columns as the 2nd row of records would have adifferent selection of dynamic columns (at least I don't know howif the solution is dynamic SQL). The only solution I can think oflooks pretty bad to me. I would use a cursor, run each row at atime, store a TRUE, FALSE value to stop processing or not andstore the result in another detail table. Then if all ANDquestions have ended with TRUE do a union of all the result andreturn the common list of employees. It sounds pretty awful as anapproach. I am hoping there's a simpler method for achieving this.Does anyone know if any SQL book has a topic on this type ofquery? If so I'll definitely buy the book.I appreciate any help you can provide.Thank you

Flat File Name As SSIS Data Source Input Parameter

Feb 29, 2008

Each day I receive a file with a different name. For example, the name is filename_mmddyyyy.txt where filename_ stays constant and mmddyyyy is the date of the file. The file is always in the same format.

I want to build an SSIS where I pass it this file name. I can write a script to generate the correct file name. How do I build the SSIS so it can accept the input parameter and find the correct file to process?

Can I Use And Excel Doc Saved In An SQL Server Table In An Image Type As A Source For An SSIS Script?

Aug 10, 2007

Hi Folks,

My situation is that Excel files are to be downloaded into a SQL Server 2005 table (perhaps as type image or nvarchar), which serves as a document repository. From there, they should be converted to XML. Use of an NT file directory is strongly discouraged. I would like to have SSIS read the Excel from one field in a table and then write the XML into another field in the same (or perhaps another) table. Is this possible? If not, is the a strait-forward way to do this?

Also, I€™m hoping to invoke the SSIS script from a SQL Server INSERT trigger so the conversion is done during the INSERT.

Thanks,
Rob

How To Manage Different Input (Excel Files) Format

Jun 21, 2006

Hi all,

I have created a package which import data from excel file and do some technical & business validation on the data. My package has about 20 control flow items. Now I'm asked to handle a second (and probably more in the future) excel file format (columns name are different, some fields are murged in one single column...).

I definitely don't want to create a different package for each excel file format. But I can't find a way in the control flow to execute a particular DataFlow in one case and another DataFlow in other cases. Typically I would like to evaluate an expression an depending on the result execute a DataFlow or another one. Even in a given DataFlow I cant find a way to have a condition and process different Excel Source depending on an expression result. Or it would be good if I could say to my Excel Source to discover the columns name and types at runtime and let me manage the columns manually in the data flow. Is that possible ? I know SSIS manage metadata on the columns based on the data source is there any way to manage the metadata manually ? I coulnd't find anything about that in BOL.

I guess an easy workaround is to have a different package just to import the different excel files in a common staging table and each package calls a single package which contains all technical & business validation.

Any help will be appreciated.

Kind regards,

Sébastien.

How To Dynamically Generate Excel Files For The SQL Query Input?

May 22, 2008

Hi,

There is one manual process done by my friend. The process is " In query analyser, she runs a sql query and the resultset of Sql query, she copies and pastes into a excel workbook".

I wanted to write a SSIS package to automate it and providing a UI, in which she can give connection details and paste the SQL query and the package will in turn generate excel workbook in the target path". I thought of trying ExecuteSQL task, but the output resultset of ExecuteSQL task cannot be mapped dynamically to excel source(correct me if I am wrong). If I use Dataflow task, then also whether dynamic mapping of SQL output to Excel destination input is possible?

Can you please tell me the best approach for achieving the above functionality?

Thanks,

Certain Numeric Fields Not Read From The Excel File When Using A Excel File Source.

Jul 20, 2006

I have the Excel Connection Manager and Source to read the contents from an Excel file. For some reason couple of numeric fields from the Excel worksheet are brought over as nulls even though they have a value of 300 and 150. I am not sure why this is happening. I looked into the format of the fields and they are set to General in Excel, I tried setting them to numeric and that did not help.

All the other content from the excel file is coming thru except for the 2 numeric fields.

I tried to bring the contents from the excel source to a text file in csv format and for some reason the 2 numeric fields came out as blank.

Any inputs on getting this addressed will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Manisha

When expoting data from excel to sql server table, using SSIS package, after exporting is done, how would i check source rows are equal to destination rows. If not to throw an error message.

How can we handle transactions in SSIS
1. when some error/something happens during export and the # of rows are not exported fully to destination, how to rollback the transaction in SSIS.

Any sort of help would be highly appreciated.

Remote Source And Destination Performance

Jan 7, 2007

Given the following scenario, what kind of performance should be expected in transferring about half a million rows? We are seeing about a 9 minute execution time. Is this reasonable for about 460,000 records moving from source to target, with 3 inner joins from the source?

Source: Server A.OLTPDB

Target: ServerA.DataMartDB

Server A is running SQL Server 2000. SSIS is running on a different machine, Server B.

The reason for this is that we are distributing the SSIS package for use with a BI product built on SSAS 2005 and the requirements are such that the client could very well have the source OLTP database on a different physical machine than the data mart.

My understanding is therefore that:

1. SSIS will do all of the heavy lifting on Server B.

2. Even though OLTPDB and DataMartDB are on the same server, it is expensive for Server B to pull the records from Server A and then send them back to Server B, but with SSIS being on a different machine, this is inevitable.

3. In the OLE DB Source Adapter, specifying table or view has the effect of an OPEN QUERY command, whereas a SQL command with straight SQL will be executed on Server B and the former would be somewhat more performant.

Can you guys validate/dispel these assumptions?

TIA,

Rick

An Error Has Occurred While Establishing A Connection To The Server. When Connecting To SQL Server 2005, This Failure May Be Caused By The Fact That Under The Default Settings SQL Server Does Not Allow Remote Connections.

Jan 22, 2008

My site works fine in VWD2008 express, but I get this error when I try to use it on my live website.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
According to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277  I am supposed to:

1.
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.
Ok, there is no such program in this folder.  The only thing in there is "SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting"...
The other thing I am greatly concerned with is this:  All is want is for my webpages to be able to access my database for user authentication.  I DO NOT want to grant the internet rights to remote connect to my database.

WHAT I WANT TO ACHIEVE:
- I would like to backup the data sitting on the Hosting company's MS SQL Server. I only have one database on this SQL Server. There are of course 100s of other databases on the same server which belong to other customers of the hosting company.

- I want to bring the backup to MY PC, from the SQL Server.

- As far as I can tell the following options within SQL Server Management Studio may be of help to me. I do not know which one I should use or which one is best or what is the proper method. 1) Select Backup option from the Tasks menu (but it only shows me drives/devices on the Hosting SQL Server, not my PC, so I can’t backup to my PC) 2) Export Data (it does not work, showing errors ‘…not a trusted connection…’ I have no clue what a trusted connection is. 3) Copy Database (which is supposed to copy the remote database on the Hosting company SQL server, to my local SQL Server running on my PC). I go through the wizard, on the last screen it just hangs i.e. shows- not responding)

MY QUESTION TO THE COMMUNITY:
How do I backup the database sitting on the hosting company SQL server? I of course need to bring the backup to my PC.

Remote Connection To SQL Server 2005

Aug 29, 2007

I have a software to connect the SQL Server as DB, and it is ok to connect to the SQL Server 2000 on the remote server in our firm, but got errors when doing the connection to the SQL Server 2005. the error messages are:
Error #1:
ADO Error #-2147467259
Description SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF].
Source Microsoft SQL Native Client
Error #2:
ADO Error ##-2147467259
Description An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connection to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
Source Microsoft SQL Native Client
Error #3:
ADO Error ##-2147467259
Description Login timeout expired
Source Microsoft SQL Native Client

I'm using SQL Server 2005 version 9.00.1399.00, not the Express version. Should I update the SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration in SQL Server Configuation Manager? But I don't know what should be set to "Enable" or Disabled". Is any other place need be configured?

Thanks.

I am new to SQL Server and need to understand how to run DTS packages (SSIS) in SQL 2005 from a remote server? In other words run them from another server from where the database is installed.

I am looking for any links on the subject, guidance on how to set this up and how to use it.

Connecting To Remote SQL Server 2005

Jun 17, 2007

I have set up a SQL Server 2005 to use for testing before moving to another production server. The server works fine when I connect to it with a program on the same computer but not when accessed remotely.

I have set it to to allow remote connections and use TCP IP only and have opened TCP port 1433 on the Windows XP firewall and am using the Teredo service on Port UDP 3544 Also the Server Browser service is running. The server is connected directly to the internet on a static IP (eg. 67.156.18.167) I have set the server to Windows authentication.

When I try to connect to the database from a data grid in Visual Studio on another computer it fails.

I am pretty surethat the problem is that I am not giving the correct information when asked to fill in the information for the data source to find the server as I am new to remote connections in SQL Server.

Thanks for any insight

How Can I Connect To A Remote SQL Server 2005 DE

Jan 25, 2008

I have an application developed by VB.NET 2005, and I need to install the Data base on a server to allow the clients access the data base from thier own computers, i need to allow all the functions on that data base (Insert, Update, and Delete).

I tried to do it by installing the SQL Server on a computer named (PC1) and the application on a computer named (PC2), and they are connected to the same subnet, I need to know what are the properties that I should do on the SQL Server in order to be visible through PC1 to make the connection string? And does the authintication mode affect the process?? whether it is Windows authintication or SQL Server Authintication??

Note: I am using SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition.

Thanking you in advance..

Mak
