Procs Fails In MS Access, Works In Management Studio
Apr 4, 2008
I have a stored procedure which is run through MS Access (yuck). It does not appear to fail, but it does not populate certain tables, and is also rather complex. I did not write it, and am trying my best to fix it. However, when I run the same procedure with the same parameters from within Management Studio (database state is the same, I restore from backup before trying out each execution) it populates the tables correctly. I have profiled both executions (from MS and from Access) and it is running with the same NTUsername, and thus the same permissions. The process used to work and then some changes were made to the DB which seem to have broken it from Access. As far as I know, the Access code has not changed, although it may have done so. The proc call from Access uses the same parameters, and does not throw an error, although it does not appear to close the connection to the DB (I'm looking into this). Access uses an ODBC connection to connect to SQL Server.
I have an SQL statement that, when run through SQL Server management studio works fine. However, when I run it on my ASP page, it doesn’t update the data! I have tried both as a stored procedure and as a simple commandText update statement. All I do is simly update the value of a column based on another column – nothing particularly complex: update customer set dateChanged = System.DateTime.Now.ToString("dd-MMM-yyyy"), CURRSTAT = 'Active',custType = case WHEN cust_Changing_To IS NOT NULL THEN cust_Changing_To ELSE custType END,cust_Changing_To = NULLFROM customers_v WHERE CURRSTAT = 'Changing'
As you can see, nothing that complex. The line that is causing the problem is the case: custType = case WHEN cust_Changing_To IS NOT NULL THEN cust_Changing_To ELSE custType END all it does is if another nullable integer column is not null, sets it to the value of that column, else it retains its existing value. Like I say, this works in Management studio, but I cannot get it to execute programatticaly from an asp page. No exceptions are being thrown, it just doesn’t update the data. Any ideas? Thanks
I can run the following query in Management Studio, but get the error listed below when I run it from the data tab in Reporting Services:
declare @starttime as datetime declare @endtime as datetime declare @timezone as integer declare @date as datetime
set @timezone = 1 set @date = '5/1/2007'
set @starttime = dateadd(hh, @timezone, @date) set @endtime = dateadd(d, 1, @starttime)
select @Starttime, @endtime from site

What I am trying to accomplish is the ability for users to select which time zone they want the data in the report to display in. To do this, I created a timezone parameter that has the offset from Central Time (which is how all data is stored in our database).
I have an ASP.NET/ADO.NET page i wrote. It was based off of the development database during most development, and it switched over seamlessly to the production database.
Except for yesterday, when i went back to edit the page. It simply stopped returning results on my queries. To see if it was caused by bad values being passed to the sqldatasource, i tried it in the "Configure Data Source..." window, and it returns zero rows. When passing all of the exact same parameters to the same procedure in the same DB engine, even using the same login information, it works.
Just not in my ADO.NET app anymore...
Can anyone tell me what the hell could be going on here, please? I already rebuilt the page from an older version this morning, being very minimal on changes, and the last thing i changed before it stopped working was the connection string... *BUT* I have triple-checked that against the canon string we have always used in every working copy.
I'm losing a lot of hair over this . Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I work with a large and complex reporting system with several hundred reports: the Programmability; Stored Procedures node of the object explorer has become very difficult to navigate.
Is there any metadata that can be embedded in the stored procs that would create subfolders like the existing System Stored Procedures node in this node of the object explorer?
I suspect that the correct answers are:
Rename all your queries with a rational naming convention; Cull the deadwood; Assign them to categories then export them to separate databases.
Unfortunately, one of these has already been done, and the other two will break several hundred dependent processes - the recoding and retesting is neither economical nor desirable.
Still, all advice is welcome. Pitch your answers at a banking geek who does intermediate to advanced stored procedures and triggers, but isn't allowed to play with sharp things (like sys objects) - but I can probably get help from a grown-up on the sysadmin team: I have discovered that the rumours about human sacrifice are baseless, and they will perform favours in return for beer.
This is also a good time to ask: just how many stored procs and functions are you allowed in SQL Server 2005?
WHERE (student_id LIKE '%') AND (register_id LIKE '%') AND (register_group LIKE '%') AND
week_no = Case @Week when null Then '#' Else @Week End
the idea is if they don't enter a number it would bring up all records. This works in mangaement studio but c# brings up the error sql server doesn't support udt on excecution of the sql. This is sql server 2000. Any ideas why this doesn't work and how to fix it.
Hi,I have an interesting scenario. I have a SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition instance running on Computer A. I'm trying to access it through computers B and C.Computer B has Sql Server 2005 Express Edition installed and I was able to use its Management Studio and connect to instance on Computer A.Computer C has SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition installed. When I try to connect to the instance on Computer A, I get connection failed message.I checked some settings. Both TCP/IP and Named pipes are enabled on the instance in A. The TCP/IP port is set to 1433 for both client and server. Please give me some ideas as to how I can solve this problem. -Thanks

I'm attempting to extract some yearly average figures from our DB. I've written a SELECT statement in SQL Server MS which returns exactly what I need:
SELECT YEAR, CAllSource, AVG(CallTotal) AS [Average calls per day]
FROM (SELECT COUNT(CallID) AS CallTotal, DATEPART(YEAR, Recvddate) AS Year, CASE WHEN CallSource IN ('Auto Ticket', 'Email')
THEN 'Email' WHEN CallSource IN ('Phone') THEN 'Phone' ELSE 'Other' END AS CallSource
FROM Calllog where
DATEPART(MONTH, Recvddate) = 3
AND DATEPART(dw, RecvdDate) NOT IN ('7', '1')
GROUP BY RecvdDATE, callsource) as sub
GROUP BY YEAR, CallSource
ORDER BY YEAR, CallSource
The problem is that when I attempt to use this in SSRS I get the following error:
"sub.Year is not a recognised DATEPART Option".
Now as you can see, "sub.Year" is not even mentioned in the expression. However I noticed that when running the query, SSRS automatically adds "sub." before the YEAR in the section highlighted in yellow above. a) Why is it doing this, and b) does anyone know of a workaround/fix?
I'm a relative SQL Server newbee and have developed a function that converts mm/dd/yyyy to yyy/mm/dd for use as in a DT_DBDATE format for insert into a column with smalldatatime.
I receive the following erros when using the function in the Derived Column Transformation Editor. First, the function, then the error when using it as the expression Derived Column Transformation Editor.
Can anyone explain how I can do this transformation work in this context or suggest a way either do the transformation easier or avoid it altogerher?

I have written a intranet page that writes some info into a sql database, basically following the 'SQL Server 2005 Express for Beginners' video. When I debug the application from within 'Visual Web Develop 2005 express' it works fine entries are entered into the DB and I can then edit the db using the admin page. But when I host the site using IIS I doesn't work, submissions to the database seem to fail I can see the DB in the admin page but if I try to edit them or delete them it fails. What could I doing wrong could I be missing a setting in IIS? Any ideas??Here's my webconfig if that helps at all: <?xml version="1.0"?><configuration xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/.NetConfiguration/v2.0"> <connectionStrings> <add name="studentprofilesConnectionString1" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|studentprofiles.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> </connectionStrings> <system.web> <roleManager defaultProvider="AspNetWindowsTokenRoleProvider" /> <compilation debug="true" defaultLanguage="c#" /></system.web></configuration>
After opening Management Studio and doing some editing it is possible to copy/paste things in the query editor. After a while (working in another app) I come back to Management Studio and I can't copy/paste anything anymore. If I try to copy from the results window I get an error message that the clipboard operation did not succeed. If I try to copy from the query editor window it just doesn't copy. I can copy/paste in other apps without a problem. Â It is not the clipboard getting full but I can't rule out much else.

when I attempt to connect to Reports or ReportServer from my desktop, but it works normally when I login with the same userid and run it directly on the server, using IE. It is prompting me for a login 2 or 3 times before failing.
My configuration is:

The Report Manager was not working at all, and I discovered that there was no entry in the .Net Framework version on the APS.Net tab in properties for the Reports virtual directory. I am not seeing any errors or anything unusual in the Event log or in the ReportServer log files.
FrontPage 2002 extensions were installed, and then removed. I noticed that this installed a SharePoint virtual directory, and that disappeared when I removed FrontPage extensions.
The domain group my userid is in is in the local Administrators group on the ReportServer system, and I have added this group as a System Administrator and Content Manager through the report Manager.
I am trying to develop a package using SSIS to get rid of Informatica.
But I am not able to connect to the SSIS from the SQL Server Management Studio. The error message is 'Connect to SSIS Service on machine XXXXX failed: Access denied'. I am using Windows authentication and I am in the DTSADMIN role. I have 'dbo' privileges in all the databases in the Server where the SSIS Service is running (Yes, I checked and the SSIS Service is running). The SSIS is installed in the same Server as my SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition is running.
I can see that the same issue is posted by many people and no answer is posted againt it. It will be greatly appreciated by many beginners to SSIS if the answer to this question is available generally.
I have another question too. How do I transfer data between two databases in two SQL Server 2000 machines using SSIS? I really want to use something like the BCP OUT and BCP IN with memory pipes to avoid the intermediate data landing. How do I achieve it? I do not want to use the linkedserver here because of the excessive logging for the huge data volume I have.
Any answer to the above questions are greatly appreciated.
Hi All ... I am not facing a problem while connecting to sql server 2005 databse, when i attach that first, in management studio, then I can access that from localhost, its fine at this point. but when i detach that database from management studio i am facing the follwing error while accessing it from localhost i.e. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Unable to open the physical file "D:databaseHunzian.mdf". I have installed and configured a 2nd instance of SSRS 2005 Standard Edition SP1 on a Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2. The 2nd instance is using it's own database and virtual directories under the default website. All configuration steps ran without error. I have no problem accessing the 2nd instance virtual directories via IE. When I connect to Reporting Services via Management Studio, it gives me no options for which instance to access and connects to the default instance. How do I connect to a 2nd named instance of SSRS via Management Studio? I've found no documentation in BOL related to this.
Is there a way to deny the users the ability to open a server via Management Studio but still allow remote connections.
In my program I need an admin login to do various things. I am using the sa login and setting the password on install of Sql Express. But, if someone changes the password for the sa login after installation and I have the login for sa hard coded in my program, then everything will break. Is there a way to make sure that no one can change the sa password?
I have a client who would like to access his database via SQL Server Management Studio. I created a login for him. This login has access only to his database on the server (I set this up using the user mapping), the Securables has Connect to SQL checked (otherwise he won't see his database). When I test this login, he is able to see all the other databases on the server, though when he clicks on the ones he doesn't have access to, it will tell him that he can't access that database. He can access his database alright. My question is, can I hide all the other databases from him, and only display that only database he has access to? I have tried many different ways, I can't seem to be able to do so.
Hi, I hope you can help.I have configured a Windows 2003 web server and SQL 2005 Server (on same box) to successfully allow remote connections and to allow access via SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005.The problem I have is that I want to restrict access to the databases on the server via the Management Studio to specific databases e.g. 1 database user "sees" only 1 database.I can configure it so that the user's remote access permissions do not allow access to other databases but they can still "see" the database listed in the Management Studio explorer.I can also configure it so that the users cannot see all the databases (by disabling View All Databases on SQL Server), but this means that they cannot not see their own database which they have permissions for.Is it impossible to have the desired behaviour of only displaying the database which the remote user accessing has permissions for and hiding all other databases?I have MSN'd,Googled and Yahoo'd this one to no avail :(Many thanksFergus
I know from searching this forum that there have been many variations of the issue I'm currently suffering, but I haven't found anything quite like mine or a solution to solve it. The issue I'm running into is that I am unable to log on to Reporting Services using Management Studio or the web interface when Windows Integrated Security is enabled. I have full functionality using basic security, but the risks involved make it impossible to deploy basic authentication out into production. The error I'm receiving in Management Studio is The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient). I recieve the same error when I try the web interface.
I've looked the most recent logfile in WindowsSystem32LogFilesW3SVC1 and these entries match up to the time I attempted my authentication.

I tried to highlight one of each of the HTTP errors I am getting. 401.2 and 401.1 are the ones I kind of expected, but have no idea why I'm getting them. The 500 0 error is a bit troubling, because unless I'm mistaken thats a server side error.
Here's my current setup. As far as I can tell, I've done everything to set up correctly for Windows Integerated security.
My Specs The server machine running all SQL 2005 services. It resides in a domain. All Clients are in the same domain.
Intel Dual Processor 3.20 gig Xenon
Windows Server 2003 w/ SP2
Microsoft Sql Server 2005 w/ SP2 Reporting Services Setup The virtual directories Reports and ReportServer are set to Windows Integrated Security with Anonymous Access disabled. All other checkboxes in Directory Security are unchecked. For permissions in Reports, I have:
Administrators (servernameAdministrators) - Full Control
ASP.NET Machine Account - Modify, Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read, Write
Domain Users - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read
SQLServer2005ReportingServices]WebServiceUsers$... - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read
SQLServer2005ReportServerUsers$... - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read
SYSTEM - Full Control
Users (CompNameUsers) - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read In ReportServer I have the same permissions except Authenticated Users is absent.
At one point, I even added the account Everybody and gave it full control, and I still recieved a HTTP 401 error. Any help at what I might be missing would be a godsend.

I have a client who has SSMS installed on her laptop. She is able to connect to the SQL server via SSMS in the office and query data on the server.
She needs to be out of site often and doesn't have internet access. She asks if the data tables can be "backed up" or saved on her laptop, so she can look at them without worrying connecting to the server. I am not sure if this can be achieved, as SSMS is built for accessing a server, not a desktop. Myself never have this need. If I really need it, I would go to Microsoft Access and create an ODBC connection to the datatables. But this client thinks that Microsoft Access is beneath her.Â
I have SSRS in Visual Studio. I created a query that works fine in SQL Server Management Studio, but when pasted into Visual Studio I get the error "An expression of non-boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected, near '('.
Here is the query. Can anyone help on why this isn't working? Thanks.

I'm having a strange problem with this but I know (and admit) that the problem is on my PC and nowhere else. My firewall was causing a problem because I was unable to PING the database server, switching this off gets a successful PING immediately. The most useful utility to date is running netstat -an in the command window. This illustrates all the connections that are live and ports that are being listed to. I can establish a connection both by running

Both these utilities show as establishing a connection in netstat so I am able to connect the database server every time, this worked throughout yesterday and has continued this morning.
The problem is when I attempt to use SQL Server Management Studio. When I attempt to connect to tcp:sql5.hostinguk.net, 1433 nothing shows in netstat at all. There is an option to encrypt the connection in the connection properties tab in management studio, when I enable this I do get an entry in netstat -an, see below:
Amost as if it's trying the different ports but you get this time_wait thing. The error message is more meaningful and hopefull because I get:
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
I would expect this as the DNS has not been advised to encrypt the conection.
This is much better than the : Login failed for user 'COX10289'. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) that I get, irrespective of whether I enter a password or not.
This is on a XP machine trying to connect to the remote webhosting company via the internet.
I can ping the server
I have enabled shared memory and tcp/ip in protocols, named pipes and via are disabled
I do not have any aliases set up
No I do not force encryption
I wonder if you have any further suggestions to this problem?
I just installed SQL Server Compact Edition, since I am considering using it instead of SQL Server Express for a local database in my application. The documentation mentioned that I could use SQL Server Management Studio Express to connect to the Compact Edition and create and manipulate databases.
To try to connect, I run Management Studio and bring up the "Connect to Server" dialog. Unfortunately, the pull-down list of "Server name"s does not include the SQL Server Compact Edition server. I do not know how to type in the server name manually, so I cannot connect.
To install Compact Edition, I downloaded it and ran "SQLServerCE31-EN.msi". This installed, and I assume registered, a number of DLLs in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server Compact Editionv3.1".
Is there perhaps an additional step that I left out to complete the installation?
Might I need an upgrade to some other components? My Management Studio Version is:
- Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.2047.00
I did a small package with only one ODBC connection (Merant 3.70 32-Bit Progess). This package runs well in Visual Studio and fails when runs by SQL Server Agent.
Configuration:
SQL Server Agent on a 32Bit server.
The ODBC connection configuration in available on System DSN on this server.
The user of Server Agent have full access (Admin).

I CAN BROWSE RECORDS THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS WITH CONNECTION!!! but when i try to update or iinsert or delete something in database there becomame this error that access denied or server does not exist!!!

I MADE FOR MY ACCOUNTS (SA, ASPNET) ALL THINGS ALLOWED AS EXECUTING stored procedures.. OR ACCESING datatables with insert delete and update query WHERE IS THE PROBLEM!!!??
I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.
I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason
I have a DTS to copy data from Oracle to SQL Server. When I logon to SQL Server box with a userID xxx, I can run the DTS from EM and it works perfectly fine but when I schedule the DTS as job, it fails.
SQL Server agent is running with same account "xxx" DTS connects to SQL Server with sa authentication Job owner is same account "xxx"

I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features.
I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio?
I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional?
I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool.
How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase.
Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology.
My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn.
