Programatically Query Database And Save Report In An Excel Table

May 2, 2007

Hello All,

I am working on constructing a software layer around some features of the RDL language that would allow me to programatically generate reports.

I am reading the RDL specification language, and I do not understand three things:

1) How the DataSet element is populated by the query or more precisely how do the <Field> elements capture all the rows inside the table that is being queries?

To my understanding I wilkl have to define several fields that correspond to all columns of interest in the query.

But that is only for one row (?!) How do the rest of the rows get populated? Does the server recursively create new rows based on my definitions until it matches row for row all the data in the table?

2) Once the elements are inside a DataSet how do make use of that data to render it in a table.

I understand how the DataSource, DataSet, and Table work individually, yet I do not understand how to establish a flow of data between DataSet and Table.

3) Do I even need to use a <Table> as an RDL element in order to organize the data in an excel table?

I would appreciate any help. Thank you!

Trying To Save Editted Textbox Value In Table But Original Value Saves Instead - Trouble With Table Update Query

Jan 9, 2008

This program gets the values of A and B passed in. They are for table columns DXID and CODE. The textbox GET1 is initialized to B when the page is loaded. When I type another value in GET1 and try to save it, the original initialized value gets saved and not the new value I just typed in. A literal value, like "222" saves but the new GET1.TEXT doesn't.

I need some advice on the ways I can execute the package other than via command line utilities. Can you use Visual Basic 6.0? .NET?

Save OLAP Query Results To Relational Table

Nov 15, 2007

I have cubes that hold quite a few calculations and so creating Excel pivot table views from it take a long time. This is even true for Excel 2007.

Now I wonder if it would be possible to write back all the calculation results to a relational table - maybe one that exactly matches the report format - so creating another report would be much faster?

SSRS seems to be a way to go but it does not speed up my Excel case.

I read about write-back in ROLAP and MOLAP but I don't think any of these concepts help me to really speed up my reports.

The closest thing I was able to find so far, which besides seems to do exactly what I want is Microsoft's new PerformancePoint 2007. It's just it seems overkill for my projects and the price is at $20K.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Regarding The Query To Save The Ids Of The Edited Names From Different Tables Into A Single Table.

Mar 8, 2008

Here with the below query iam binding my gridview with industry name,company name,Plant Name,Group Name related to the IDs in Audit table.Select Aud.Ad_ID_PK,Aud.Audit_Name,Ind.Industry_Name,Cmp.Company_Name,Pla.Plant_Name,Gr.Groups_Name,Aud.Audit_Started_On,Aud.Audit_Scheduledto,Aud.Audit_Created_On from
Industry Ind,
Company Cmp,
Plant Pla,
Groups Gr,
Audits Audwhere Ind.Ind_Id_PK =Aud.Audit_Industry and
Cmp.Cmp_ID_PK =Aud.Audit_Company and
Pla.Pl_ID_PK =Aud.Audit_Plant and
Gr.G_ID_PK =Aud.Audit_Group and
Ad_ID_PK in (select Ad_ID_PK from Audits)
Now i want to edit these names.
when i click on edit in gridview these names will be filled into textboxes and when i change the names it should compare the name with particular tables and should get the Id of that and store in Audits table.
For example:
i have this data in my audits table:

Commercial83312

2
2
2
1
Here Commercial83312 is ID of that Audit and 2,2,2,1 are the Industry,Company,Plant and group Ids for that particular audit.In the front end i can see the names of this particular IDs.
when i edit the industry name in the UI it must check the name with industry table and get the ID of the changed name and store it in audit table.
so the data may be changed in audits table as :

Commercial83312

4
2
2
1

so here the industry ID is changed
I need the stored procedure for this.
please help me,its very urgent...

Excel Connection Manager Fails When Package Called Programatically

Jan 25, 2008

I've put together a SSIS package that, once a user uploads an Excel spreadsheet from a webpage, grabs it, does a mess of calculations and spits it out into a datareader (this last part is tricky, but I haven't even gotten to this point yet). In BIDS, the package works fine. Run using the 32-bit version of dtexec, it runs fine. But when I try to call it from the page, I keep getting an error. The errors look familiar enough that I'm thinking it's due to the package trying to run 64-bit, and that not playing nicely with Excel. If that's true, is there an easy way to force the 32-but version to be used? I've already set the project properties to Run64BitRuntime = false, which I'd hoped would help. but no luck.

Here's the code I'm using:

Code Snippet
string pkg = @"pathpackage.dtsx";
Application app = new Application();
Package p = app.LoadPackage(p, null);
Variable varFileName = p.Variables["strExcelFileName"];
varFileName.Vaue = strFileName;
Variable varFilePath = p.Variables["strExcelFilePath"];
varFilePath.Value = strFilePath;

DTSExecResult dte = p.Execute();

Error handling

p.Dispose();

How Can I Send Row Data To A SQL Database Table Via VB 2008, And Permanently Save And Display The Result?

Mar 11, 2008

This is related to:
How can I make some graphics drawings stick while others disappear?
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2905460&SiteID=1

Except that now I am trying to connect and update to an Microsoft SQL Server Database File (SqlClient) via VB 2008 Express; specifically a table called €œHexMap€? that contains some columns that I am ready to insert some row data into. Here is what my program should do:

As I hover over a hexagon map of the US a red flickering hexagon follows the location of my mouse cursor. If I click on a given hexagon, the program draws a permanent blue hexagon, and sends a new set of row data into my database. Such information as the name of the state, row, column, center x, and center y, etc. Here is a quick snapshot of this program in action:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3128/2325675990_4155edbdee_o.jpg
-sorry, I didn't capture the mouse cursor inside the red hexagon

I think I am missing something since I appear to be able to connect successfully to the database table. Unfortunately, I never see the changes in the database, when I try to Show Table Data (via Database Explorer). I am hoping someone will review my code snippet (below) and tell me what I am missing. What happens when I run this code is that it acts like it works just fine, except that I have no indication that any changes were actually affected.

Code Snippet

Dim CN As New SqlClient.SqlConnection()
Dim da As New SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter

'Consider using Me._adapter that is used already

CN.ConnectionString = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|Mapboard.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True"

End If

Try

Catch ex As Exception MsgBox("FAILED TO OPEN CONNECTION TO DATABASE DUE TO THE FOLLOWING ERROR" & vbCrLf & ex.Message)
End Try

'use the Connection object to execute statements
'against the database and then close the connection
da = New SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter("select * from HexMap order by Territory", CN)

If CN.State = ConnectionState.Open Then CN.Close()

Dim rows As Integer

rows = 0

Dim CMD As New SqlCommand("INSERT HexMap (Hexagon, HexRow, HexCol, HexX, HexY, Territory) VALUES(HexCounter, CaptureRow,CaptureCol,Hx,Hy,Territory_ComboBox1.Text)", CN)

CN.Open()

rows = CMD.ExecuteNonQuery

If rows = 1 Then
MsgBox("Table HexMap updated successfully")
Else
MsgBox("Failed to update the HexMap table")
End If

If CN.State = ConnectionState.Open Then CN.Close()

Creating A Table Programatically!

Nov 25, 2003

Hi SQ Gurus,
Please help me with this issue that I am facing. I want to create a table programatically but want to pass its name as a variable. I would like to do something as follows:
CREATE PROCEDURE BS_Create
(@Name nvarchar(25))
AS
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[@Name](
[ID] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,
[Prod_Name] [nvarchar] (75) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
GO
The table name is passed in as a parameter. No matter what I pass as a parameter, the table name is '@Name', which is not what I want. Instead, if the variable contains the value 'Product', I would like to see a table with the name 'Product' to be created.

How can I solve this problem.

Any help is appreciated!

How To Programatically Connect To An SQL Database?

Nov 18, 2006

Can anyone please direct me to an easy to understand Description, Article or Video tutorial that shows an example on how to programatically connect to an SQL database and retrieve data from a collumn using C# and VISUAL WEB DEVELOPER 2005 EXPRESS EDITION. Also, what namespace should be imported to do this? (From what I have gathered out of the help, it seem that System.Web.UI.WebControls is the one)
I am trying to create a "news letter" web page. I have a basic form and when I hit "send" then the code in the background should access the database with all the recipient info, and retrieve all the E-mail addresses, Names, etc. and include it in each e-mail.
( I don't know if it is just me, but the help included with VISUAL WEB DEVELOPER 2005 EXPRESS EDITION is extremely difficult to understand - from a beginner point of view).
Thanks!
