Proper Way To Rename ASPNETDB.MDF? Custom Provider The Solution?

Jan 28, 2006

ASP.NET 2.0....

What is the proper way to rename the ASPNETDB.MDF to another name, such as TEST_ASPNETDB.MDF?

I know you can rename the db in the IDE, BUT, there are other places you need to change so that ASPNETDB.MDF isn't recreated.  Do I have to make a custom SQLExpress provider or something to that effect?

Any examples?  Thanks...

There fore my ASPNETDB.MDF needs to be renamed and have a path assigned. This doesnt seem tro be taken care of in my web.config file? Can some one help in reasigning the default database name and pathway. my other databases were pretty straight forward.

Custom Log Provider Type Not Recognized As A Valid Log Provider

Mar 13, 2006

I am new to SSIS but I am learning fast. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have written a custom log provider derived from LogProviderBase. I want to programmtically add the custom log provider to my package, but when I try this:

myPackage.LogProviders.Add("ACustomLogProvider");

I get the following exception:

"The log provider type "ACustomLogProvider" specified for log provider "{..GUID..}" is not recognized as a valid log provider type. This error occurs when an attempt is made to create a log provider for unknown log provider type. Verify the spelling in the log provider type name".

I have followed the instructions in BOL and as suggested in this forum, adding the DtsLogProvider attribute:

[DtsLogProvider(DisplayName="ACustomLogProvider", LogProviderType="ACustomLogProvider", Description="a description")]

Another way I tried is that I added a GUID attribute to my custom log provider class and then tried this:

Type aType = typeof(ACustomLogProvider);

Guid aGUID = (Guid)aType.GUID;

myPackage.LogProviders.Add("{"+ aGUID.ToString() +"}");

This also gives me the same exception "The log provider type ""{..the actual GUID for ACustomLogProvider..}" specified for log provider "{..a different GUID..}" is not recognized as a valid log provider type....

My questions are: Is it possible to add a custom log provider programmtically or must it be done through the SSIS Designer?

Must I deploy my custom log provider class for it to work programmatically? (I had perhaps wrongly assumed I would not have to deploy if I don't want it to show up in the SSIS Designer).

I would prefer to use a custom log provider instead of just logging within the SSIS event handlers because I can override the OnPostExecute, etc. but I cannot (can I?) override the specific event handlers like PackageStart, PackageEnd, etc because they are not exposed through DTSEvents.

Any help I would be very grateful for. Thanks.

Need To Deploy ASPNETDB On Provider SQL Server 2000

Aug 1, 2007

In my ASP.NET application I am using authentication/Login controls. I have my development configuration running correctly... my providers are setup in the web config along with the appropriate connection strings for these providers. In the development environment .NET Framework 2.0 and SQL Server Express 2005 configured in IIS, ASPNETDB installed in App_Data. I am able to create new user accounts and re-login under these accounts, so all validation is working on the development servers.
Now... I need to deploy the ASP.NET 2.0 site. My provider is allegedly ASP.NET 2.0, with SQL Server 2000, implimented on a seperate backend server which I utilize in my application during development to reduce configuration issues during deployment. I can create databases and utilize SQL Server Management Studio locally (2005) to perform all appropriate development tasks on my remote SQL 2000 Server.
However, I need to deploy ASPNETDB on that remote SQL 2000 Server (apparently my provider has no instance of SQL Server Expres 2005 running on the web server).
I tried to use the Import/Export Wizard in SQL Server 2005 Management Studio, I can only transfer the tables and views to my remote ASPNETDB database (which I had to create from the provider side utilities). I have tried using the "Copy Database..." command on the ASPNETDB database, but my error is: "The destination SQL Server must an SQL Server 2005 instance".
...Then I tried to script the database and run it against the remote server within the Import/Export Wizard... this failed miserably... massive Syntax Errors puked out of the parser.
...Then I tried to mirror the ASPNETDB database  to the remote SQL Server 2000 instance... my error is: "The destination SQL Server must an SQL Server 2005 instance".
...Then I tried creating an SSIS package utilizing the "Transfer SQL Server Objects Task". This failed as well... reporting that the Login cannot be null... apparently a known issue and unrelease fix.
So now I'm stuck! How can I impliment the ASPNETDB on a remote SQL Server 2000 instance?
Theoretically, if I change the configuration of the providers for ASP.NET the Login/Authentication controls in the web.config file to point to the new ASPNETDB instance attached to the remote SQL 2000 Server, and of course... if I could get the stored procedures ported it should work right?
The schema should be in tact whereas I used the Import/Export wizard to at least get the tables and views ported to the remote SQL 2000 Server. But the 55 stored procedures and 1270 system stored procedures still need to be transferred. How can I accomplish this?
I hope I provided enough of an overview... Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Don't hesitate on any questions.

Merging ASPNETDB.MDF With Custom DB.

Nov 13, 2005

When I created my ASP.NET 2.0 application I created a database -
database.mdf that handles all the normal data for my site. VWD created
ASPNETDB.MDF to handle membership authentication etc. Now I am learning
that most hosts want you to have one database, not two. Does anyone
know an easy way to combine these two databases? Where in the code do I
need to change this info? I'd like to make ASPNETDB.MDF part of
database.mdf.

Any Solution? Cannot Initialize The Data Source Object Of OLE DB Provider Microsoft.jet.oledb.4.0 For Linked Server (null).

Jul 22, 2007

This is a problem that never get solved, sometime I can use other way to avoid it, but havn't found a solution yet, i hope I can get some more idea here.

I am using SQL 2005, when I run

select * into #import1
from OpenRowSet('microsoft.jet.oledb.4.0','Excel 8.0;hdr=yes;database=\ws8webjeff2.xls',
'select * from [jeff2$]')

I get

Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "microsoft.jet.oledb.4.0" for linked server "(null)".

when I try to compile a SP with that statement in it, I get the same error, like

create stored procedure test

as begin

select * into #import1
from OpenRowSet('microsoft.jet.oledb.4.0','Excel 8.0;hdr=yes;database=\ws8webjeff2.xls',
'select * from [jeff2$]')

end

so it seems the error may not relate to the real file, since at the compile stage, it should not check the real file?

On my live db, after I restart the SQL service, the statement will work, after a while, one or several days, I get the same error again. I can not restart my live db quite often for sure, so now I have another backup db server, I need run the statement on the backup server and then read the data from there.

I have the same problem at two places, both use SQL 2005.

So far there are three questions

1, why it works after restart, but only last for a while? something about memory? since the backup db seldom need restart and work fine after many days.

2, why it gives error in compile stage?

3, why two dbs in different Enviroment has the same problem

The most answer I have gathered so far is permission issue, true I got similar error if the import file is located in a place which SQL has no right to access. But in this case, it should not be.

Any other idea or suggestion?

thanks

Custom Log Provider - Not Recognised.

2. I deploy the signed assembly to the../../DTS/90/LogProviders directory & the GAC on both machine A & machine B.

3. I create a new package on machine A & go to enable logging for this new custom provider: I find it in the drop-down list of providers, and I can add it successfully.

4. I create a new package on machine B & go to enable logging for this new custom provider: I find it in the drop-down list of providers, but I can't add it. I get the following error:

'...failed to create log provider...the log provider type "_" specified for log provider "_" is not recognized as a valid log provider type. This occurs when an attempt is made to create a log provider for an unknown log provider type. Verify the spelling in the log provider type name (package)."

Access To Variables In Custom Log Provider?

Jun 29, 2006

Hello,

I found one post from the past asking this question, but didn't see an answer, so I am hoping someone can shed some more light on it:

I am writing a custom log provider in C#. Is it possible give this custom log provider access to the variables collection (via a variabledispenser object)? First glance at the log provider classes would tell me that this is not possible, though I would like confirmation. Also, if I am correct in thinking it is not possible, what was the reason for leaving this out?

Thanks!

Accessing A Package's Variables From Within A Custom Log Provider...or Not...

Given that Task.Validate() exposes the package's VariableDispenser, but LogProviderBase.Validate() doesn't...

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/fr-fr/library/microsoft.sqlserver.dts.runtime.logproviderbase.validate.aspx

...I guess that simply means that I can't access a package's variables within a custom log provider? Can anyone comment/confirm? Any other options/routes to achieving the same..?

Reading Package Variables From Custom Log Provider

Oct 1, 2007

I am interested in determining if package variables can be read from a custom log provider. I am able to pass the values into the custom log provider using an expression in a custom connection manager. My intention is to used the values of these variables upon package failure so I can capture the context of the failure. Unfortunately, if the value of the variable is changed at runtime, this update is not reflected in the custom log provider.

Is it possible to get direct access to the package variables from the custom log provider?

Thanks,

Custom Role Provider Everthing Working Except Roles???

I am trying to use a custom role provider, the main purpose so that I don't have to use a database file. My web.config file is posted below. Users are created in the remote database but roles are being picked up and created in the App_Data folder. Can anyone give me a hint at what I am doing wrong? thanks in advance.

Using Connection Managers Inside Custom Log Provider Failing!

I'm trying to use an OLE DB connection manager from inside a custom log provider, but can't get the code to work - I get an exception "A first chance exception of type 'System.InvalidCastException' occurred in SSEALogProvider.dll" on the last line of the code below.

I know the connection is OLE DB from looking at .CreationName.

I've tried both with & without ToConnectionManager90(), but appearently not in the right way, both cases gives the same exception.

Any tips on what I'm missing? All the examples I've seen are either creating (instead of using) connection managers, or are file based connection managers. Any and all help much appreciated!

Package With A Custom Component (log Provider) Runs In BIDS, But Doesn't Run Where Deployed.

Hi,

I have a package with a custom log provider, which runs in BIDS. However when I deploy the package onto SQL Server and run it on the deployed machine, if fails:

"failed to decrypt protected XML node DTS:Password...key not valid for use in specified state..."

Now this is definately to do with the custom log, as if I take it out & redeploy, I can run it on the deplyed server + also run it within a job. I have entered the custom log provider library (+ other required DLLs) in the GAC on the deployed machine, but I'm clearly missing something.

Any ideas pls??? I'm really stuck.

Moved Aspnetdb To SQL Server - What Permissions Do I Need To Give The ASP IIS Service Account For That? (Getting: Cannot Open Database Aspnetdb Requested By The Login. The Login Failed.)

May 12, 2008

I am getting the error:
Cannot open database "aspnetdb" requested by the login. The login failed.
When I browse to my ASP.NET 3.5 LINQ web application on the IIS 6.0 server on Server 2003.
I imagine this is because while I granted SQL Server 2005 login and permissions to my database that the application stores its data in, I did NOT grant any rights to the service account the IIS Application Pool uses for its identity to the aspnetdb database on SQL Server which is where all my roles information is stored at.
My question is what are the MINIMUM permissions needed for this database so it can perform its roles related functions?
I'm using Windows Authentications with the SQL Role provider for authorization.

Thank you.

EDIT: I think I only need to open the aspnetdb database and add my login to the aspnet_Roles_FullAccess role.  Is that correct?

SOLUTION! - VB.NET 2005 Express And SQL Server 2005 - NOT Saving Updates To DB - SOLUTION!

Nov 30, 2006

VB.NET 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express - NOT saving updates to DB - SOLUTION!

-----------------------------------

The following article is bogus and confusing:

How to: Manage Local Data Files - Setting 'Copy to Output Directory' to 'Do not copy'
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms246989.aspx

You must manually copy the database file to the output directory
AFTER setting 'Copy to Output Directory' to 'Do not copy'.

Do not copy

The file is never copied or overwritten by the project system. Because your application creates a dynamic connection string that points to the database file in the output directory, this setting only works for local database files when you manually copy the file yourself.

You must manually copy the database file to the output directory
AFTER setting 'Copy to Output Directory' to 'Do not copy'.

-----------------------------------

The above article is bogus and confusing.

This is rediculous!

This is the most vague and convoluted bunch of nonsince I've ever come accross!

Getting caught out on this issue for the 10th time!
And not being able to find an exact step-by-step solution.

--------------------------

I've tried it and it doesn't work for me.

Please don't try what the article eludes to as I'm still sorting out exactly what is supposed to be happening.

If you have a step-by-step procedure that can be reproduced this properly please PM me.

I would like to test its validity then update this exact post as a solution rather than just another dicussion thread.

Many thanks.

This is the exact procedure I have come up with:

NOTE 1: DO NOT allow VB.net to copy the database into its folders/directorys.

NOTE 2: DO NOT hand copy the database to a folder/directory in your project.

Yes, I know its hard not to do it because you want your project nice and tidy.
I just simply could NOT get it to work.
You should NOT have myData.mdf listed in the Solution Explorer. Ever.

Create a folder for your data following NOTE 2.

Copy your data to that folder. * mine was C:mydatamyData.mdf

Create a NEW project.

Remove any Data Connections. ( no matter what)

Save it.

Data | View Data Sources

Add New Data Source

select NEW CONNECTION ( No Matter what, do it!

Select the database. * again mine was C:mydatamyData.mdf

Answer NO to the question:
Would you like to copy the file to your project and modify the connection?
- NO ( no matter what - ANSWER NO ! - Absolutely NO )
Then select the tables you want in the DataSet.
and Finish.

To Test ----------

From the Solution Explorer | click the table name drop down arrow | select details
Now Drag the table name onto the form.

The form is then populated with a Navigation control
and matching Labels with corresponding Textboxes for each field in the table.

Save it.

1) Run the app.

Add one database record to the database by pressing the Add(+) icon

Just add some quick junk data that you don't mind getting lost if it doesn't save.

YOU MUST CLICK THE SAVE ICON to save the data you just entered.

Now exit the application.

2) Run the app again.

And verify there is one record already there.

Now add a second database record to the database by pressing the Add (+) icon.

NOW add some quick junk data that you WILL intentionally loose.

*** DO NOT *** press the save icon.

Just Exit the app.

3) Again, Run the app.

Verify that the first record is still there.

Verify that the Second record is NOT there.
Its NOT there because you didn't save the data before exiting the app.

Proving that YOU MUST CLICK THE SAVE ICON to save the data you just entered.

Also proving you must add your own code to catch the changes
and ask the user to save the data before exitiing or moving to another record.

As a side note, since vb.net uses detached datasets,
(a copy/snapshot of the dataset in memory and NOT directly linked to the database)
the dataset will reflect all changes made when moving around the detached datasets.
YOU MUT REMEMBER TO SUBMIT YOUR CHANGES TO THE DATABASE TO SAVE THEM.
Otherwise, they will simply be discarded without notice.

Whewh!

I hope this saves me some time the next time I want to start a new database project.

Oh, and uh, for anyone else reading this post.

Thanks,

Apr 15, 2008

Hi,
My .NET 2005 application is on a server outsite company's domain. SQL server is in domain and port for sql server is open. TCP/IP is set for remote connection in SQL Server. Connection string in .config is
    <add name="X_Conn" connectionString="Data Source=XXX;Initial Catalog=XXX;User ID=XX; Password=XXX;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
I receive the error below:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
thanks a lot in advance!

Provider: Named Pipes Provider, Error: 40 - Could Not Open A Connection To SQL Server

Apr 26, 2007

We just changed the dev environment to sqlagent. From then we were unable to see the reports on the report server because:

An error has occurred during report processing.

Cannot create a connection to data source 'IHRSDataSource'.

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

this error is cropping up.

To Resolve this issue, we checked the Surface Area Configuration and also checked the Reporting Service Configuration . There seem to be no problem and everything looks ok.

Please help me in resolving this issue.

Provider: Named Pipes Provider, Error: 40 - Could Not Open A Connection To SQL Server

Feb 20, 2006

Hi All,

I am new to dotnet. I tried connecting to the database MS SQL Server 2000. I gave the code like, the one below, in form load event,

SqlDataReader dr = null;

SqlConnection myConnection = new SqlConnection("Data Source=IP;Initial Catalog=name;User Id=uid;Password=pwd;");

myConnection.Open();

myConnection.Close();

But I could not connect. The error message highlights the line myConnection.Open() and displays the error

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

It tries connecting to SQL Server 2005. There is no SQL Server 2005 in that system. There is only SQL Server 2000.

I have the aspx code in my local system and the database in another machine.

Could Someone please help me out in solving this problem.

Thanks,

Arun. S
