Public Report
May 7, 2008
Is there a way to make a report public, to outside your domain users? We have a web application the users are authenticated in that is not in .NET and not using NT authentication and we want to have a report linked from inside the application that will pass the parameters in the URL. This is not very sensitive data and the report is using SQL authentication. We also don't want then to log in a second time for the report.
Can this be done easily?
Thanks

Greetings,
I have a set of reports that should be accessible to any user on our network. Those reports are located in a single folder in SSRS. I would like to configure security to allow anyone to see the reports in that folder. Is there a way to do this?
I do have other folders where I am using security so I do not want to open up system-wide access to all reports.
Thank you for your ideas.

Hi Guys,
I am unable to deny DMV rights to public. I have already ran the SQL query successfully:
"DENY VIEW SERVER STATE TO public" and "DENY VIEW DATABASE STATE TO public"
However when I check my master DB, the public still have rights to all the dm_***** objects. Am I doing it wrong or is there any steps I missed out? Can anyone help please?
Thanks a million.

Hi,
I'm actually using global public variables in the custom code of my reports.
Is there a "chance" that , if the report is executed at the same time by two users, values calculated for an user will be crushed by other user's execution ?
Thanks in advance.
Grégory.

Are there any restrictions, limitations or anything to prevent the use of SQL Express database being used with my ASP.NET 2.0 application on a public web host?
If so, what are they?
Thanks.

I have a db that I use as the backend to an Access application. The application looks at 2 databases that are on the clinet machine. A db from a vendor and my new database. I can read the vendor db (with the proper dns), but I can only read my db when the user has admin privileges. I have granted the public all permissions for the table on my db. What am I missing?
Also, this is a db on a Small business Server 2003 so all of the SQL tools do not appear to be there.
TIA

Hi,
I have installed a MS CRM 3.0 Server with SQL 2005 Reporting Server on the same server.
Whenever I access reports from MS CRM with internal IP i.e http://192.168.100.55:5555 within my network every default as well custom reports are working fine.
But the same when I access with Public IP i.e. http://209.199.X.X:5555 I am able to see the application in public i.p but the reports are not working.
Is there any way so that I can access my all reports from MS CRM in public IP.
Thanks

I am trying to use variables that are declared in a report that I am created in SSRS 2005.
For example:
Declare @Month as int
Set @Month = case when month(getdate()) = 1 then 9 else month(getdate()) - 3
When I do this, I get an error message, 'The declare cursor SQL construct or statement is not supported.'
So how do i properly declare a variable that can be used through all my dataset?
Thanks, Iris

In a SQL 2k instance (latest SP) some of my user databases show the public role with execute on a variety of stored procs named dt_* (i.e. dt_addtosourcecontrol). However, not all the user databases do this, some do not grant the public role execute on these procs .
So, can someone explain what generates these permissions and is it acceptable to remove them? If I have a database that does not grant public access, should I be concerned? I don't see any reference to these procs in BOL.
TIA,
Moblex

In exploring permissions that users have, I find that they all have VIEW ANY DATABASE permission which they inherit from the public server role. You can see this by selecting the Permissions page on the Server Properties dialog and highlighting "public". The permission shows as having been granted by sa. This is listed as a server role. However, it does not show in the list of server roles and I can't find any documentation for it (RTM BOL). Interestingly, if I revoke this permission (which is the only permission this role has), the public server role disappears from view. But I can subsequently regrant the permission with Transact-SQL in master and the role comes back.
I would like more information about this role. It seems to be sort of "secret".
When I revoke the permission, users can't see any databases except master and tempdb (both of which have active guest users) even though they have been granted access to other databases.
What I was trying to accomplish by changing this permission was to allow a user to see only those databases which they are allowed to use. But that does not seem to be possible.
Thanks for the help.

Hello all,
I'm having trouble copying my production database to a development version because I have a login user in the public role that is not a valid user. I can't find any reference to the login/user anywhere in my database or in NT security, on my server for that matter.
When I open the public role through Enterprise Manager, I can see the logins/users in the list, but the 'Remove' button is disabled. I also tried to use the stored procedure 'sp_droprolemember', but it says that 'public' is not a role in the database.
DTS keeps blowing up on this object when exporting, and I need to get this stuff copied ASAP.
Thanks for all help

Hey folks,
Here's the skinny
I'm trying to run a stored procedure that requires triggers to be disabled in a table.
When I run the stored procedure (from the app or from the query analyzer) it works fine cause I'm setup as the owner/admin.
However, when users call the stored procedure from the application it gets executed as public which does not have alter persmissions.
I do not want to give alter permissions to public (for obvious reasons).
I was thinking of using SETUSER and SETOWNER but I don't know if it will work (I think because I cannot upgrade permissions using these just change to user of equal or lesser permissions).
Someone had mentioned to me to create a sysadmin user and just SETUSER to that then set it back to public, but again not sure if this will work because public has less permissions than the sysadmin.
I would like to have more info before I try this out and give it back to the client for testing.
Not sure if any of this will work for me, please help.
Thank you for your time.
By the way, I'm using SQL2000

Hi all,
Hope someone can help: by default, there's an entry for 'public' in server permissions (right-click server in Management Studio > Properties > Permissions), which has 1 selection: 'View All Databases' is set to 'grant'. I wanted to disable this permission, and so unfortunately unchecked the 'grant' tickbox but forgot to tick the 'deny' tickbox. What appears to have happened is the entire 'public' entry has been removed, meaning I can't go back and reselect 'grant' (or 'deny') for 'View All Databases'. I'd really like to get the 'public' role to reappear... Is that possible?
A very big thanks for any help!

Is there any T-SQL Script or SP that would determine what tables public users have access to? I only ask because I would like to make sure that any users with public rights do not have access to SYSXLOGINS, SYSDATABASES, SYSOBJECTS, SYSCOLUMNS and mswebtasks tables. Thanks

Here is what I am trying to do. I want to create a private / public key pair (either a certificate or asymmetric key) and be able to give the public key to my business contacts. They would then use the public key to encrypt data to be sent to me and then I could import that data into my SQL 2005 database and use the private key to decrypt it.
It seems to me that this should be a pretty simple process, but it is not. The reason I want to do this is that the data they send to me on a regular basis is sensitive. Currently we use PGP, but then I have to decrypt the data and then import it and then reencrypt it. It would greatly simplify my process if I could just import the data and use it.
So how can I do this. Most of the posts I read say that asymmetric keys are avaiable in SQL2005 but not recommended for use. I don't want my business contacts to be able to decrypt any of my data (if they got access to the database) just encrypt.
Any recommendations???
Thanks!

I gave a developer rights to the Public role on a SQL Server 2000 database. The Public role only has explicitly set select rights to the system tables and one user table. There are no other explicit rights set. The developer was able to open a table that had no rights set in enterprise manager and change data. Is this possible?

I use the following script in order to create db role:
USE [MyDB]GOCREATE ROLE [myRole] AUTHORIZATION [public]GO
It doesn't work:
Msg 15405, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot use the special principal 'public'.
However this code works fine:
USE [MyDB]GOCREATE ROLE [myRole] AUTHORIZATION [dbo]GOALTER AUTHORIZATION ON ROLE::[myRole] TO [public]GO
So the question is why?

Good Day:
I have a business object with a set of public DataTables and Public Strongly Typed Dataset DataTable Types defined. When I add the business object class to the report as a datasource, only public System datatypes (int, string) show up. I added System.Data to the report properties Assemblies, with no change. Any ideas?
Thanks,

I'm creating an asymmetric key in SQL Server:
CREATE ASYMMETRIC KEY MY_KEY
WITH ALGORITHM = RSA_512
ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'password1@'
I'm then taking the public key...
SELECT public_key
FROM sys.asymmetric_keys
WHERE [name] = 'MY_KEY'
I'm trying to import this into VB.Net using RSACryptoServiceProvider.
Dim RSA As New
Security.Cryptography.RSACryptoServiceProvider(512)
RSA.ImportCspBlob(KeyBlobByteArray)
I have to add the following line to get it to not give me errors.
(Why?) But the data looks right when I look at the exponet and modulus
of the parameters that are exported and then immediately imported.
Something is obviously being thrown away when I do this, but I don't
know what. It's probably the key to the whole problem.
RSA.ImportParameters(RSA.ExportParameters(False))
I encrypt the message...
EncryptedMessageByteArray = RSA.Encrypt(MessageByteArray,
False)
And in SQL server I try to decrypt the message and I get NULL.
SET @DecryptedMessage =
DecryptByAsymKey (
AsymKey_ID('MY_KEY') ,
@EncryptedMessage ,
N'password1@')
I've noticed that the encrypted array is completely different in VB
than when I encrypt it in SQL (obviously), but I can't figure out how
to configure to the RSACryptoServiceProvider to match what SQL Server
is doing under the hood.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jerrill

Hi,I was wondering about the possiblity of setting a SelectParameter for my SQLDataSource declaritively, using a public property value.Something like this: <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="CategoryIdLvl3" DefaultValue='<% SelectedCatLvl3%>' Type="String" /> </SelectParameters> So the default value automically processes Public Property value of SelectdCatLvl3, which is declared in my code behind. Of course this syntax is incorrect, but if someone can help, much appreciated.I don't want to set this parameter in code behind, because I'd have to do it mulitple times, so was hoping this method would somehow work. thanks..

Hi.
I have a question that I have been thinking about for some time. Have in mind that I'm somewhat a SQL newbe.
I work on a few webapplications that are database driven applications. When we desides to change something in the database, we normaly do the changes on our replicat development database, and after some testing the changes are suppose to be implamented in the live, public database.
Now, what is the best way, or recomended way to do this? Today we bo it manualy. But at one time I experimented with the export/import wizard to se if it was possible. What I want to do is change de design of a tabel, without loosing the original data, and without geting the data from the development database into the live database.
To export an stored proccedure, I usualy just create a SQL-script for the procedurs in question and the runthe script against the public DB using the Query Analyser. But if I do the same procedure on a table, I loss all the data in the database.
Do I make any sense at all?
Any tips/idea/best practise on this subject?
