Put Trigger On Table X Where Records Are UPDATED Or DELETED
Mar 25, 2013
I am having a hard time understanding triggers. My goal is to put a trigger on table x where records are UPDATED or DELETED. When this trigger fires I need to take the record ID and put the ID modified record into table y with the date modified. so basically logging the recordid changed with the getDate()
I don't quite understand how to get the rowid of the modified record.
Hi I am using sql server 2005 express and would like to keep all my fields from being both updated and deleted.
In other words, once I create a new record, I would like to have it protected from being deleted and I dont want the field values to be updated/changed from the values initially entered. Is there a way to this without running triggers or changing database permissions and user roles?
I tried making the database read-only, but then of course i cant add new records.
We have an app that uses triggers for auditing. Is there a way to know the order that the records were inserted or deleted? Or maybe a clearer question is.... Can the trigger figure out if it was invoked for a transaction that "inserted and then deleted" a record versus "deleted and then inserted" a record? The order of these is important to our auding.
When i debug a trigger is it possible to add a WATCHon the INSERTED or DELETED?I think not, at least I couldn't figure out a way to do so.Does someone have a suggestion on how I can see the values?I did try to do something likeINSERT INTO TABLE1(NAME)SELECT NAME FROM INSERTEDbut this didn't work. When the trigger completed and Iwent to see the TABLE1, there were no records in it.Are there any documents, web links that describe waysof debugging the trigger's INSERTED and DELETED?Thank you
I have a table with about half a million records, each representing a patient in my county.
Each record has a field (RRank) which basically sorts the patients as to how "unwell" they are according to a previously-applied algorithm. The most unwell patient has an RRank of 1, the next-most unwell has RRank=2 etc.
I have just deleted several hundred records (which relate to patients now deceased) from the table, thereby leaving gaps in the RRank sequence. I want to renumber the remaining recs to get rid of the gaps.
I can see what I want to accomplish by using ROW_NUMBER, thus:
SELECT ROW_NUMBER() Over (ORDER BY RRank) as RecNumber, RRank FROM RPL ORDER BY RRank
I see the numbers in the RecNumber column falling behind the RRank as I scan down the results
My question is: How to convert this into an UPDATE statement? I had hoped that I could do something like:
UPDATE RISC_PatientList_TEMP SET RRank = ROW_NUMBER() Over (ORDER BY RRank);
but the system informs that window functions will only work on SELECT (which UPDATE isn't) or ORDER BY (which I can't legally add).
Hi SQL fans,I realized that I often encounter the same situation in a relationdatabase context, where I really don't know what to do. Here is anexample, where I have 2 tables as follow:__________________________________________ | PortfolioTitle|| Portfolio |+----------------------------------------++-----------------------------+ | tfolio_id (int)|| folio_id (int) |<<-PK----FK--| tfolio_idfolio (int)|| folio_name (varchar) | | tfolio_idtitle (int)|--FK----PK->>[ Titles]+-----------------------------+ | tfolio_weight(decimal(6,5)) |+-----------------------------------------+Note that I also have a "Titles" tables (hence the tfolio_idtitlelink).My problem is : When I update a portfolio, I must update all theassociated titles in it. That means that titles can be either removedfrom the portfolio (a folio does not support the title anymore), addedto it (a new title is supported by the folio) or simply updated (atitle stays in the portfolio, but has its weight changed)For example, if the portfolio #2 would contain :[ PortfolioTitle ]id | idFolio | idTitre | poids1 2 1 102 2 2 203 2 3 30and I must update the PortfolioTitle based on these values :idFolio | idTitre | poids2 2 202 3 352 4 40then I should1 ) remove the title #1 from the folio by deleting its entry in thePortfolioTitle table2 ) update the title #2 (weight from 30 to 35)3 ) add the title #4 to the folioFor now, the only way I've found to do this is delete all the entriesof the related folio (e.g.: DELETE TitrePortefeuille WHERE idFolio =2), and then insert new values for each entry based on the new givenvalues.Is there a way to better manage this by detecting which value has to beinserted/updated/deleted?And this applies to many situation :(If you need other examples, I can give you.thanks a lot!ibiza
I am a newbie creating triggers and I would like to know what is the name of the updated logical table. That is, since the are identifiers like "inserted" and "deleted" that represent the inserted and deleted rows, respectivaly, I presumed that "updated" existed - but it does not.
I have a table with a column named "UpdatedTimeStamp" which I would like to update anytime the other columns are modified. I intended to create the following trigger:
create trigger myTrigger on myTable after update as
update updated set UpdateTimeStamp=GetDate()
Of course, "updated" is not a valid identifier that represents the updated row.
Please, help me in creating this trigger. What is the correct way of doing a trigger like this?
Is there a way to check who has deleted records from my SQL tables? I asked because I notice records keep disappearing from my tables recently for no reason. The DB is only accessible by a few IT staff. Business users have no direct access to it so they can't do any harm and there is no application that update these record missing tables.
I don't need to know the exact records that have been removed. I need info on who has made a deletion activity on which table, date and time is good enough.
Hi All, I am using a trigger. I want to get the data of a row before updating inside this trigger and insert it into a backup table. Please anybody help me. Example with code is highly appreciated.
Hi there,Could somebody post some simple example how one can refer toa column in the 'deleted' temporary table within a trigger definition ?Should the 'deleted' and 'inserted' temp tables be declared, or they are'implied' ?I keep having this msg when trying to create a trigger"The column prefix 'deleted' does not match with a table name or alias nameused in the query"Thanks for your inputs,Eddy.
For some reason in Enterprise Manager for SQL Server 2000, I cannotput the following line into a trigger:select * into #deleted from deletedWhen I hit the Apply button I get the following error:Cannot use text, ntext, or image columns in the 'inserted' or'deleted' tablesThis seems like a weird error, since I am not actually doing anythingto the inserted or deleted tables, I am just trying to make a tempcopy.I have another workaround but I am just curious why this happens.Thanks,Rebecca
I need to create a trigger to save every record which has been updated in a table (e.g. "Contacts") into another (e.g. "Shadow_contacts). So basically something like a versioning on database level. I have no experience with it and any precise hints/solutions would be very appreciated
It happened accidently that we deleted records from a table in SQL server 2005 DB. We never took a full backup of the DB till then. Is there any way that we can recover the deleted records. Logs files are still present. ( *mdf and *ldf ).

Hello, I am using SQL Server 2005 and ASP.NET 2.0. We have a very simple content management system where we have to keep track of date last modified for each row in all of our content tables. I know there's a "timestamp" datatype that is used for replication scenarios, but is there anything similar that I can use to set up a date_modified column for each of my content tables that will automatically update with GETDATE() whenever anything in a given row is updated? Or do I have to create a date_modified column of smalldatetime datatype and write a trigger on update for EVERY single table of content that I have in the database? It seems there should be an easier way to do this than to write 20 triggers for my 20 content tables. Thanks!
I am looking to created a trigger that inserts records into a log table to show the stored porcedure that has updated a specific column to a specific value in a specific table
At present I have:
CREATE TRIGGER [dbo].[trUpdaterTable] ON [dbo].[t_account]-- A DB level trigger FOR UPDATE --Event we want to capture AS IF update (document_status)
[Code] ...
However this doesn't appear to bring back the procedure that triggered the update...
The value the trigger should update on is document_status = 0
HI, I am wondering if it is possible to retreive this information without using row count transform. Can I get the # of rows inserted/updated or deleted by destination from the log?
How to delete records from multiple tables if main table’s entity is deleted as constraints is applied on all..There is this main table called Organization or TblOrganization.and this organization have branches which are in Brach table called tblBranch and this branch have multiple applications let say tblApplication and these application are used by multiple users called tblUsers.What I want is: when I delete the Organization All branches, application and users related to it must be deleted also.How I can apply that on a button click in asp.net web forms..Right now this is my delete function which is very simple

Hi guys, may I know is it possible to create an update trigger like this ? Assuming there are two database, database A and database B and both are having same tables called 'Payments' table. I would like to update the Payments records on database A automatically after Payments records on database B had been updated. I can't use replication because both tables might having different records and some records are the same. Hope can get any assistance here, thank you.
I am trying to update one table when records are inserted in another table.
I have added the following trigger to the table “ProdTr” and every time a record is added I want to update the field “Qty3” in the table “ActInf” with a value from the inserted record.
My problem appears to be that I am unable to fill the variables with values, and I cannot understand why it isn’t working, my code is:
ALTER trigger [dbo].[antall_liter] on [dbo].[ProdTr] for insert as begin declare @liter as decimal(28,6)
we have various user defined fields, so when the user insert new value to this field , i want new records (other user field to get populated) be inserted relevant to the inserted value FROM another table (lookup)
This field is a drop down list , after insert committed , i want other user defined field to populate.
Scenario. Drop down is a list of users, after selecting and updating then i want contact details of the above selected user be populated.
CREATE TRIGGER User_Defined_field_KAE ON [dbo].[AMGR_User_Fields_Tbl] AFTER INSERT
AS
INSERT INTO [dbo].[AMGR_User_Fields_Tbl] (Client_Id, Type_Id, name SELECT Client_Id, '1089', A.USER_PHONE_1 FROM inserted , [dbo].[ADMN_User_Details] as A WHERE name = a.user_id;
Is there an alternative to using FETCH to loop through the Inserted/Delete Tables within a trigger? Does this work?
SELECT * FROM Inserted BEGIN
if INSERTED.IsActive then ...
END
Would this only see the first record?
Currently I'm doing the following;
AS DECLARE @JobID INTEGER; DECLARE @IsActive BIT; DECLARE Temp CURSOR FOR SELECT JobID, IsActive FROM Inserted; BEGIN OPEN Temp; FETCH NEXT FROM Temp INTO @JobID, @IsActive; WHILE (@@FETCH_STATUS = 0) BEGIN
if @IsActive then ...
FETCH NEXT FROM Temp INTO @JobID, @IsActive; END; CLOSE Temp; DEALLOCATE Temp;
Is this the best method for looping through the Deleted/Inserted or any other table within a trigger?
I am developing an application in vb.net 2005 using SQL Server 2000. In this I have two tables SessionMaster and SessionChild. Fields of session master - SessionMastId, Start_Date, End_Date, Session_Type, Fields of session child - SessionChildId, SessionMastId, UserName, Comment. SessionMastId and SessionChildId are primary keys of respective tables and also they are auto increment fields. Please how to write trigger to insert record into both tables at a time.
