Query Date Stored As Text

I am using Windows "Performance Logs and Alerts" to log performance statistics to a SQL database. In this case I am using a Counter Log, which creates the necessary tables upon startup of the log. I can see my data pouring into the database and now I am writing some T-SQL statements to query the data and display it on an aspx page. I have one particular problem that is presenting me with a bit of a challenge. I want to be able to query my captured performance counters based on date ranges entered on the aspx page. Unfortunately I am having trouble doing that because the "CounterDateTime" field where the date for each counter sample is stored is a char(24) data type instead of a datetime data type. I'm not sure why MS chose to store dates in a char field but I am not sure how to query that field for date ranges. So my question is, how would one query for a date range when the dates that I'm querying are in char format? Thanks in advance.

Basically the above is a very common requirement, please comment on my solution which I've arrived at by searching through the web; -
In summary I have used 3 SSIS components these are "Flat File Source", "Derived Column" and "SQL Server Destination".
1) File Connections Manager Editor
1.1) Within File Connections Manager Editor; -
Name the data type e.g. "INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC"
and assign a type to the data type e.g. string[DT_STR]
1.2) Click on the Preview button to ensure the expected text is assigned to the expected data type.
2) Derived Column Transformation Editor
2.1) Assign Derived Column Name, e.g.
INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE
2.2) Select <add as new column> within Derived Column.
2.3) Enter the conversion Expression, e.g. ; -
2.3.1)
(SUBSTRING(INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC,8,2) + "/" + SUBSTRING(INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC,5,2) + "/" + SUBSTRING(INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC,1,4))
2.3.2)
Since the above conversion is such a common task I suggest that Service Pack 3 of SQL Server 2005 delivers the following functionality; -
STRINGTODATE ('YYYYMMDD',INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC)
2.4) Select "database timestamp [DT_DBTIMESTAMP] " as Data Type.
2.5) Within the Mappings tab of the SQL Destination Editor have; -
Input Column as INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE and
Destination Column as INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE.
Please comment on the above, I will then pass on my suggestion to Microsoft.

I asked this question below, but the answer was that the conversion will take place automatically, but I can't get that to happen. I have a flat file with an 8 position field that I identify as string (and I also tried date) that is yyyymmdd and it needs to go into the database field that is datetime format. IS there something I am doing wrong with the definition of it, or do I need to add some kind of conversion, and if so, what and how would that be done. I'm a dts Sql2000 expert, but the SSIS thing is driving me crazy. I have a ton of dts' to convert and the migration tool doesn't work because there are a lot of active X scripts in them. thanks for your help. Boston Rose

I have a date held in a varchar field in a temporary sql table and I want to convert it into a sql date and it doesn't work. I can replicate this as below -
So I run
select
cast ('14/02/2014' as date)
and I get a conversion failed error.

Hi - I'm short of SQL experience and hacking my way through creating a simple search feature for a personal project. I would be very grateful if anyone could help me out with writing a stored procedure. Problem: I have two tables with three columns indexed for full-text search. So far I have been able to successfully execute the following query returning matching row ids: dbo.Search_Articles @searchText varchar(150) AS SELECT ArticleID FROM articles WHERE CONTAINS(Description, @searchText) OR CONTAINS(Title, @searchText) UNION SELECT ArticleID FROM article_pages WHERE CONTAINS(Text, @searchText); RETURN This returns the ArticleID for any articles or article_pages records where there is a text match. I ultimately need the stored procedure to return all columns from the articles table for matches and not just the StoryID. Seems like maybe I should try using some kind of JOIN on the result of the UNION above and the articles table? But I have so far been unable to figure out how to do this as I can't seem to declare a name for the result table of the UNION above. Perhaps there is another more eloquent solution? Thanks! Peter

How do I get the values in the below format
NY,CA,GA --- each state to be followed with comma and the next state
NY,NJ,PA,DC,AL --- each state to be followed with comma and the next state
correct query that will fetch only state names and not the numbers.

I need help with creating a query that compares the current date with a stored date field. If the difference between the two dates is greater or equal to 5 days for example, I need to be able to return these records. Eg: if today date is 2015-09-29
if we pass year =2015 and month=09 then we have to get 2015-09-29
if we pass year =2015 and month=08 then we have to get 2015-08-31(for previous months we have to get EOMonth date & for current month we have to get current date).

I have a very large table with about 15 "date" fields that were imported as text from a flatfile. I need to convert these fields to dates. The format that they are currently in are like this "12/31/99".
What is the easiest way to convert these fields to dates?

How can I convert this string into the correct SmallDateTime type.

When converting a text into a date format using the DateTime String transformation I get the following error.
'The number of failing rows exceeds the maximum specified.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Invalid date format'
The dates is stored as a text like this: mmddyy and I want to convert it to a date field in the table. Any help would be great.

I have a report that runs transcripts for people. I have a date parameter setup along with last and first name. The date parameter field is used to specify what year (ex. 1/1/2006 - 12/31/2006) to pull the information for.
Now..I have a text box at the bottom (Footer) of my report that says something to the affect of "Official transcripts for 2006". There will be times when I have to run the report using a different year other then "2006" in the date parameter field. How do I have the text at the bottom change to reflect the year I'm reporting on? If I use dates say in 2004 I need the text at the bottom to reflect that year and not 2006. Can this be accomplished?

I have a report that pulls data for the following date parameters:
DECLARE @STARTDATE datetime, @ENDDATE datetime
SET @STARTDATE = GETDATE()-3
SET @ENDDATE = GETDATE()
Select * from tablename where reportdate between @STARTDATE and @ENDDATE
This query works fine. I wanted to show the parameters chosen in a text box in the report so the user knows the date range the report was run. I tried using the following:
"Discharge Date between " & Parameters!STARTDATE.Value & " and " & Parameters!ENDDATE.Value
but I am getting a forward dependancy error. I have also tried setting a default value but can not get the correct code to subtract three days from Now()
Can someone help me with this one?

Why this won't work. POST_DT is nvarchar(50). I know it should be datetime but, I have no control over it. That's why I'm creating a temp table. But, I want to only insert the most recent invoice. There is code to create test data at the end.

I've got a field I'm trying to convert into a date format as it currently sits as a text field. The date setup is of the format DD/MM/YYYY. Some of the fields are NULL, however for the sake of filling in gaps I've just set the nulls to '01-01-1905'.
I've tried to use CAST to change the data into a readable format for SQL Server however I tend to get one of two messages:
Conversion failed when converting date and/or time from character string.

error converting data type varchar to date

Several textboxes are being on a web form for date entry. and we want to allow the user to leave date fields blank (if particular date is unknown). However, when the field is left blank, the SQL Server 2000 database defaults to 1/1/1900 (datatype = datetime).My question is as follows: How is it possible to leave a date textbox field blank, and either send 00 0 000 or spaces to the SQL Server 2000 database datetime field?Any advice/insight is appreciated! Hi,
I'm attempting to use the following code to display either 'All' or the date value selected by the user from a Report parameter;
=iif(Parameters!FromCheckOutDateDate.Value.ToString = "[Check Out Date].[Date].[All]", "All", "From Date: " + Parameters!FromCheckOutDateDate.Value.ToString.Substring(26,10))
This is throwing an error ('#Error').
I can use the following code with no error, though its not as useful;
=iif(Parameters!FromCheckOutDateDate.Value.ToString = "[Check Out Date].[Date].[All]", "All", "Not all")
I can even use this to display the selected value (i.e. 2007-01-01);
Parameters!FromCheckOutDateDate.Value.ToString.Substring(26,10)
Why can't I use them both in my iif statement?
Can someone please help?

Another item process time is in 2015-04-01 10:00:00 and 2015-04-04 11:50:59.

How can I determine the length of a text value from a column defined as text? Len works really well with char and varchar but not text. How can I do it?

I have a problem with importing text into a database.
I have an application in .net where I fill a textbox with a certain text. When I press a button the text shall be separated and inserted into a database. The big question here is: how do I seperate the text so I get it into different colums in the database?
I know there is someting called InString, should I use this or is there an other way? I was thinking I could use a stored procedure.

I need to pass this XML into sp_xml_preparedocument so I can rebuild a table out of it. But I can't figure out the syntax.
If I try doing this:
declare @idoc int
exec sp_xml_preparedocument @idoc output, (select XmlResult from #cache)
I get an error, with or without the brackets round the select statement.
The temp table is created using an SP, but I can't call that directly either. This:
