Query Help, What Columns For All Records Are Empty
Aug 30, 2004
I am wanting to make a query to find out if there are any columns in a table that are null for all records.
So far I am using a cursor that holds all the column names of that table and then a stored procedure that would use a loop to cycle through all the column names in a query to essentially count the number of nulls for each column and then an If statement to check to see if the #of nulls = to the number of records.
What isn't working is my query to count the number of nulls...Here is my query
select count(*)
from XYZ
where @cName is null
Ive tried declaring cName as a sysname, and varchar, neither work.
Also, I've tried using COL_NAME(OBJECT_ID('XYZ'), someColumnIndx)...I think this would be the better choice just because I wouldn't need to use a cursor, but both aren't working.
I am a bit new to MSSQL and don't know my way around the system tables. Is there a sys table that would give me this info so I wouldn't need to perform a query?
SELECT NON EMPTY { [Measures].[SUM_COUNT] } ON COLUMNS, TopCount ( Filter ( {[DIM].[NAME].[NAME]}, [Measures].[SUM_COUNT] <> 0 ) , 10, [Measures].[SUM_COUNT] ) ON ROWS FROM [USAGE]
where <criteria>
I want to show the topmost 10 records. For some criteria I get the results in the chart.
But for some criteria or say for wrong criteria, there are no records. In such a case the X-axis contains all values for {[DIM].[NAME].[NAME] and value for the Y-axis is all 0. Its kind of blank report it will restrict to 10 records.
In such a scenario I want to show a message to the user saying "No records found", which I have set in the No Rows property of the chart.
If I remove the TopCount clause then I get the above message, which is obvious.
So how do I acheive the same message but at the same time limiting the records to 10?
How can I acheive this in my scenario? Can something be done at the query end?
we have a database hosted online on sql server 05. at work, we have a sql 2000 query analyzer on a machine, and sql 2005 management studio on a machine. both machines can connect to the database, both can pull up the data from a certain table. but there are two columns that display info in query analyzer that show up as empty on management studio. not null, just empty. any ideas why?
I'm exporting the following query to a datagrid, however in the result set, some values are duplicated (for various reasons... mostly old software and poor categorization)...On the records with identical values, I want to look at the account number and the DateOfService fields and search for joint distinct values and only display that...Current Example: ACCT NUM | DATE OF SERVICE |________________________________ 43490 | 10/01/2006 08:15:23 | 35999 | 10/10/2005 12:00:00 | 35999 | 10/24/2005 12:45:30 | 35999 | 10/10/2005 12:00:00 | 35999 | 10/10/2005 12:00:00 | 23489 | 10/15/2006 15:13:23 |Desired Result: ACCT NUM | DATE OF SERVICE |________________________________ 43490 | 10/01/2006 08:15:23 | 35999 | 10/10/2005 12:00:00 | 35999 | 10/24/2005 12:45:30 | 23489 | 10/15/2006 15:13:23 |Here is the query I'm working with... just can't figure out how to join or limit the results to ONLY unique matches in Acct Number AND DateOfService. "SELECT tblCH.ProcedureKey AS CPT, tblPC.Description, DATEDIFF(d, tblPat.BirthDate, " & _ " { fn NOW() }) / 365 AS Age, tblPat.LastName, tblPat.FirstName, tblPat.BirthDate," & _ " CAST(tblCH.AccountKey AS varchar) + '.' + CAST(tblCH.DependentKey AS varchar) AS Account, tblCH.DateOfService " & _ " FROM dbo.Procedure_Code___Servcode_dat tblPC INNER JOIN " & _ " dbo.Charge_History___Prohist_dat tblCH ON tblPC.ProcedureKey = tblCH.ProcedureKey RIGHT OUTER JOIN " & _ " dbo.Patient_Info___Patfile_dat tblPat ON tblCH.AccountKey = (tblPat.AccountKey AND tblCH.DependentKey) = tblPat.DependentKey "Any suggestions from y'all SQL gurus? I have to have this report ready for production by tomorrow morning and this is the last fix I need to make =Thank you =)
I'm currently running the following statement that is used in a CrystalReport. Basically, a record is returned when the T_PAYMENT.amounthas a record in the database based on the value of the T_MULTILIST.codefield. Currently, if there is no record returned, there is no listingin the report for the given T_MULTILIST.code.The user now wants a record to be displayed on the report when there isno record in the database - she wants it to display a value of '$0'for the given T_MULTILIST.code record. I tried to explain the fact thatis not possible the way things stand at the moment. Basically I needsome typeof case statement that says 'if there is no record returned, create asingle record and set T_PAYMENT.amount = 0' AFTER each query has beenexecuted.Anyone have any idea how to accomplish this?SELECT DISTINCT'English Language Arts, Grade 1' as Rec_Type, 'English Language Arts(Consumable)' as Super_Type, '' as Other_Type, 'Continuing Contracts'as Proc_Type,T_MULTILIST_GRADE.grade, T_MULTILIST.description, T_MULTILIST.code,T_PAYMENT.amountFROM (T_MULTILIST T_MULTILIST INNER JOIN (T_PAYMENT T_PAYMENTINNER JOIN T_SHIPPING_DETAILT_SHIPPING_DETAIL ONT_PAYMENT.transaction_id=T_SHIPPING_DETAIL.transac tion_id)ON T_MULTILIST.code=T_SHIPPING_DETAIL.multilist_code) INNER JOINT_MULTILIST_GRADE T_MULTILIST_GRADE ONT_MULTILIST.code=T_MULTILIST_GRADE.multilist_code, T_ORDER, T_REQUISITION, T_REQUISITION_DETAILWHERET_ORDER.id = T_SHIPPING_DETAIL.order_id ANDT_REQUISITION.id = T_ORDER.requisition_id ANDT_REQUISITION_DETAIL.requisition_id = T_REQUISITION.id ANDT_REQUISITION_DETAIL.latest_record_flag = 1 ANDT_REQUISITION.latest_record_flag = 1 ANDT_ORDER.latest_record_flag = 1AND (T_MULTILIST.code='1040')AND (T_MULTILIST.expiration_year >= '2006' )AND (T_REQUISITION.requested_shipment_date >= '2006' + '0601'AND T_REQUISITION.requested_shipment_date < dateadd(YY, 1,'2006' + '0601' ) )UNIONSELECT DISTINCT'English Language Arts, Kindergarten' as Rec_Type, 'EnglishLanguage Arts (Consumable)' as Super_Type,'' as Other_Type, 'Continuing Contracts' as Proc_Type,T_MULTILIST_GRADE.grade, T_MULTILIST.description,T_MULTILIST.code, T_PAYMENT.amountFROM (T_MULTILIST T_MULTILIST INNER JOIN (T_PAYMENT T_PAYMENTINNER JOIN T_SHIPPING_DETAIL T_SHIPPING_DETAILON T_PAYMENT.transaction_id=T_SHIPPING_DETAIL.transac tion_id)ON T_MULTILIST.code=T_SHIPPING_DETAIL.multilist_code) INNER JOINT_MULTILIST_GRADE T_MULTILIST_GRADE ONT_MULTILIST.code=T_MULTILIST_GRADE.multilist_code, T_ORDER, T_REQUISITION, T_REQUISITION_DETAILWHERET_ORDER.id = T_SHIPPING_DETAIL.order_id ANDT_REQUISITION.id = T_ORDER.requisition_id ANDT_REQUISITION_DETAIL.requisition_id = T_REQUISITION.id ANDT_REQUISITION_DETAIL.latest_record_flag = 1 ANDT_REQUISITION.latest_record_flag = 1 ANDT_ORDER.latest_record_flag = 1AND (T_MULTILIST.code='0040')and (T_MULTILIST.expiration_year >= '2006' )AND (T_REQUISITION.requested_shipment_date >= '2006' + '0601'AND T_REQUISITION.requested_shipment_date < dateadd(YY, 1,'2006' + '0601' ) )Up to 40 more UNION statements follow the above 2.
In Access I have a macro that, each night, takes a table with aprimary key defined in it, and deletes all the rows. Then itimports/appends records from a fixed width text file. In this way, since the table is not deleted and recreated, the primary key is keptintact. What would be the equivalent SQL method for doing this in an automatedway? I've tried letting DTS import the table from Access, but theprimary key is lost. Is there some way to "empty" a table instead ofdropping it, and then append new records so that the table will end uphaving the primary key I want it to have?Thanks.Larry- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -"Forget it, Jake. I have recently installed SQL 7.0 on a test server for the purpose of testing an application that currently runs on SQL 6.5. I used the Upgrade Wizard to move a small test database from 6.5 to 7.0. The upgrade was successful, with a few errors that were from Logins that were not defined as users in the test database.
When I try to run the application on 7.0, I get a series of “ADO Exception” errors with the SOURCE : OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers. The description of the errors reads “Cannot use empty object or column names. Use a single space if necessary.” When I select OK in the message box, the application continues to load, until another error occurs. After 20 –30 message boxes, the application comes up. However once in the application, the errors continue.
Is there someone who could shed some light on the nature of my problem? There is obviously something incompatible between the latest version of the SQL ODBC driver, my application, and the database. The description seems to refer to empty columns or tables. Obviously, this was not a problem with 6.5 and the older ODBC driver (3.60). I have run the database through the upgrade wizard twice. Once with the ANSI NULLS option OFF, and the other time with it ON. This makes no difference. I have searched the Microsoft Web site under SQL and ODBC using some of the keywords in the message box., but did not come up anything useful. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi all I am having some issues in selecting items from my database where the record is NOT NULL. I have the code below however although some fields do contain soem data in it, others are blank which I believe are empty spaces. How do I do a SELECT command which ignores empty spaces and NULLS?
Code Snippet
SELECT CustomSearch FROM OfficesTable WHERE CustomSearch IS NOT NULL Thanks, Onam.
We are writing a C application that is using ODBC to insert recordsinto a database. We have a NOT NULL column that can legitimately havean empty value, i.e. we know the value and it is empty (i.e. a zerolength string). We are using SQLBindParameter() to bind a variable to theparameterized insert statement <<in the form: INSERT INTO table VALUES(?, ?, ?)>>. We are using SQLExecDirect() to process the SQL.We are running into the problem where ODBC is converts the empty (zerolength) string into a NULL value and this errors due to the fact thatthe column is defined as NOT NULL.We do not want to redefine the column as NULL, becasue myunderstanding of the correct usage of a NULL column is to indicatethat a value is unknown or meaningless... in our case we know thevalue (it is empty) and an empty value has meaning within ourapplication.I'm sure that this issue has been seen and address thousands(millions?) of times... any guidance would be appreciated.
writing the query for the following, I need to collapse the continuity. If the termdate for an ID is one day less than the effdate of the next id (for the same ID) i need to collapse the records. See below example .....how should i write the query which will give me the desired output. i.e., get min(effdate) and max(termdate) if termdate is one day less than the effdate of next record.
I am facing a strange problem in executing stored procedure. Basically my sproc will take a values from Java application and create a Insert statement. see stored procedure below.Just to give some more background- I am re writing the procedure which was written in oracle already.
Problem I am facing now is with the statement below . When I execute the procedure for first time it works fine however when I execute for second time onwards it is setting to empty. Not sure what is the problem with my declaration and setting up with values. For reference I have pasted my complete stored procedure code below.
I have a query similar to the following. The intent of this query is to retrieve the top 6 records meeting the specified criteria (LOGTYPENAME = 'Process Status Start' OR LOGTYPENAME = 'Process Status End' ) based on most recent dates. Please keep in mind that I expect to return up to 6 records for each unique LogProcessName. This could be thousands of different LogProcessNames with up to 6 records for each.
1) The table I am executing against currently is very large in size and thus takes a long time to execute against. It would seem there must be a more efficient query to get the results I am looking for? 2) CTE doesn't work on SQL 2000. I need a query that does. 3) I cannot modify the database itself in the process.
;WITH cte AS ( SELECT [LogProcessName], [LogBody], [LogDate], [LogGUID], row_number() OVER(PARTITION BY [LogProcessName] ORDER BY [LogDate] DESC) AS RN FROM [LOGTABLE] WHERE [LogTypeGUID] IN ( SELECT LogTypeGUID FROM LOGTYPE WHERE LogTypeName = 'Process Status Start' OR LogTypeName = 'Process Status End' ) ) SELECT * FROM cte WHERE RN = 1 OR RN = 2 OR RN = 3 OR RN = 4 OR RN = 5 OR RN = 6 ORDER BY [LogProcessName] DESC, [LogDate] DESC
Does anybody else have any idea that would yield the results that I am looking for and take into account items 1-3 above?
To create a strike file for a text file output, I piped the output of a query throught a mulitcast. One output is the actual flat file, the other output is the strike file. The next task for the strike output is an aggregate count and sum functions. If the original query returns no records, the count shows zero, but the sum shows NULL. Further down the process I have to pad out the values with zero's, but that NULL is causing problems. How do I convert the Null to either an empty string, or a value of zero? Thanks
I have a parameterized report based on a MDX query (so no drag and drop of filters and fields). Now i have to ad a parameter. So i open the query parameter dialog box and i ad my parameter. when i click ok , my dataset becomes empty , resulting in an error on my report saying that the fields on the report cannot by found and should be in the scope of the dataset.
Has anyone experienced this problem before, or am i forgetting something here?
I am working on a Statistical Reporting system where:
Data Repository: SQL Server 2005 Business Logic Tier: Views, User Defined Functions, Stored Procedures Data Access Tier: Stored Procedures Presentation Tier: Reporting ServicesThe end user will be able to slice & dice the data for the report by
different organizational hierarchies different number of layers within a hierarchy select a organization or select All of the organizations with the organizational hierarchy combinations of selection criteria, where this selection criteria is independent of each other, and also differeBelow is an example of 2 Organizational Hierarchies: Hierarchy 1
Country -> Work Group -> Project Team (Project Team within Work Group within Country) Hierarchy 2
Client -> Contract -> Project (Project within Contract within Client)Based on 2 different Hierarchies from above - here are a couple of use cases:
Country = "USA", Work Group = "Network Infrastructure", Project Team = all teams Country = "USA", Work Group = all work groups
How to implement the data interface (Stored Procs) to the Reports Implement the business logic to handle the different hierarchies & different number of levelsI did get help earlier in this forum for how to handle a parameter having a specific value or NULL value (to select "all") (WorkGroup = @argWorkGroup OR @argWorkGrop is NULL)
Any Ideas? Should I be doing this in SQL Statements or should I be looking to use Analysis Services.

Dear All, I have created a table in my SQL server database, the problem i am facing is my insert query fails if i leave any form field empty (leave it blank). On my back-end table, only one field is mandatory, and others have been set with the constraint "allow null". As per our business requirement, except one value is complusory while others are optional. If I enter all values in the form it works perfectly fine. Can you see in the code below - where am i possibly going wrong ? <script language="VB" runat="server" > Sub Page_Load(Src As Object, e As EventArgs) If Page.IsPostBack Then Dim ConLath As SqlConnection Dim comLath As SqlCommand Dim insertcmd conLath = New SqlConnection("Data Source=SQLas;Initial Catalog=settle;User ID=sa;Password=password") ConLath.Open() insertcmd = "Insert into His_set values (@t_d,@s_p,@p_s,@v_oq,@i_oq,@v_qn,@i_qn,@v_qw,@i_qw)" comLath = New SqlCommand(insertcmd, ConLath) comLath.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@t_d", SqlDbType.DateTime, 12)) comLath.Parameters("@t_d").Value = trade_date.Text comLath.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@s_p", SqlDbType.Decimal, 8)) comLath.Parameters("@s_p").Value = sett_price.Text comLath.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@p_s", SqlDbType.Decimal, 8)) comLath.Parameters("@p_s").Value = post_close.Text comLath.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@v_oq", SqlDbType.Int, 8)) comLath.Parameters("@v_oq").Value = vol_oq.Text comLath.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@i_oq", SqlDbType.Int, 8)) comLath.Parameters("@i_oq").Value = oi_oq.Text comLath.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@v_qn", SqlDbType.Int, 8)) comLath.Parameters("@v_qn").Value = vol_qn.Text comLath.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@v_qw", SqlDbType.Int, 8)) comLath.Parameters("@v_qw").Value = vol_qw.Text comLath.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@i_qn", SqlDbType.Int, 8)) comLath.Parameters("@i_qn").Value = oi_qn.Text comLath.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@i_qw", SqlDbType.Int, 8)) comLath.Parameters("@i_qw").Value = oi_qw.Text Try comLath.ExecuteNonQuery() Catch ex As SqlException If ex.Number = 2627 Then Message.InnerHtml = "ERROR: A record already exists with " _ & "the same primary key" Else Message.InnerHtml = "ERROR: Could not add record, please " _ & "ensure the fields are correctly filled out" Message.Style("color") = "red" End If End Try comLath.Dispose() ConLath.Close() End If End Sub </script>
I have a SQL database where I am attempting to perform a complicated query that I cannot seem to figure out. I am using SQL Server.
I have 4 tables (TableA, TableB, TableC, and TableD). TableA and TableB are guaranteed to have a relationship.
TableC and TableD are guaranteed to have a relationship.
The trick is, I need to link between TableA and TableC essentially using a LEFT JOIN. I need to retrieve all of the values from TableA regardless and the information from TableC and TableD if there is a link, if there isn't a link, then the values from TableC and TableD need to be empty strings.
Does anyone know how I can do this? I've been trying for the last 5 hours without any luck. I feel I'm close, but there is something I feel I'm overlooking.
I have a question regarding duplicate records, the thing is I'm able to query for duplicated records if I type the following:
select ColumnName from TableName where ColumnName in ( select ColumnName from TableName group by ColumnName having count(*) > 1 )
That gives me duplicate records for one column, but I need find duplicate records in more than one column (4 columns to be exact), but the way I need to find these records is they all have to be duplicate, what I'm trying to say is I don't don't want to find the following:
First Last Age Email John Smith 25 jsmith@hotmail.com John Smith 26 jsmith@hotmail.com John Smith 25 jsmith4@hotmail.com
I need to find the following:
First Last Age Email John Smith 25 jsmith@hotmail.com John Smith 25 jsmith@hotmail.com John Smith 25 jsmith@hotmail.com
So all the columns must be exactly the same, that's the only condition I want to show the records, is there any way to do this?
For the record, I'm using MS SQL Server 2000, thank you.
I have a table called DISTRIBUTION_SL in which there will multiple records for each request as shown below in the data.I would like to convert the recepient email into columns and then join with other tables so that the entire request information is seen in one row rathar than multiple rows

I am trying to create an asp page that will update an Access 2000 database. I need to update records if the user exists and create a new record if the user does not exist. Most of the variables are pulled from a separate "post" form.
I am using 2 pieces of info to find duplicates, as employee numbers can be assigned to multiple employees. Right now I have the page check for a duplicate employee id number then check for a duplicate last name. Unfortunately it is running each check separately, so if the last name is duplicated anywhere, it is sending a duplicated value.
here is the chunk of code in question... all RF_variables are request.form variables

Hopefully this is understandable. If anyone can offer any help I would greatly appreciate it.
