Query Executes Faster In Grid Mode Than In Text Mode!!

Mar 9, 2000

Hello,everyone!!

There is a query which when executed in the grid mode(ctrl+d) takes approx 0.02 seconds(about 21,000
rows) But when I execute in the text mode, it takes about 0.40 seconds!!
Why is this difference?
Also, when the records from this table are read from a VB application, they are equally slow (as in the text mode!)
Why is it so slow on the text mode & relatively faster in the grid mode?
Has anyone got any idea on ‘Firehose’ style cursor ?(which may speed up access of data in the VB application)

Rgds,
Adie

SQL Server And Terminal Services Application Mode

Aug 11, 2006

Hello!

I am specifically looking for a KB article, best practice, white paper etc, that states it is not recommended that SQL Server (either 2000 or 2005) is installed on a WIndows 2003 Server that is also running Terminal Services in application mode.

Is there such a document or reference?

Thanks,

RS 2000 With Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM)

Feb 16, 2007

Hi all,

I have a customer with an RS installation in a DMZ, using ADAM for its authentication.

The problem I have is as follows :

When setting up the execution log reporting (supplied as part of the standard install) all information being captured for report execution e.g Which user ran a specific report and when, is coming up with 'UNKNOWN' for the user name.

Does anyone have any idea where to look to fix the recording of user information? I am not sure whether it is a RS or A.D.A.M issue.

Thanks

Package Configuration In Dev Enviornment

Apr 13, 2006

Am I missing something, I can't find any way to specific the XML configuration file when I try and run my package in Debug of BIDS. My OLE DB connections are all failing due to a lack of a password. I can set the password in BIDS but its forgotten as soon as I start Debug or build the solution. The only way I seem to be able to run my package (now that I have enabled configurations) is to de-select the enable configurations box.

I've tried putting a configuartion file in the Deployment folder, the bin folder and the project root folder all to the same result.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Query Regarding Update Data Using Application

Apr 7, 2014

SELECT ContactID,FirstName,MiddleName,LastName,Description FROM Contact

Contact table contains 4 columns as explained. in the application there is one tab called Contact where it displays Above information and description is non editable. Now the new requirement has come user can update the description information and save information in a new column say 'Description1'. that means new column needs to be added in the db and also necessary changes needs to be done at the application side

For ex :SELECT ContactID,FirstName,MiddleName,LastName,Description,Description1 FROM Contact

Now when user views the contact table it should display description info by default from 'description' table. If he edits he should see edited data from 'description1' table.the logic should if updated data is there display that data from 'description1' table other wise display from 'description' table

SQL In A Wireless Environment

Mar 12, 2007

Jimmy writes "We use a software that stores its database in SQL. We currently have a server box running Windows 2000 Server with SP4 and SQL Server 2005 with SP2 which holds the database. The server is wired in but we have several other stations that connect to the database wirelessly.

The problem is with our wireless stations.
When a wireless client travels from one access point to a repeater, it'll drop the connection for that moment. Once it picks up the wireless connection again, it requires closing out of the software and going back into it so it reestablishes the SQL connection to the server.

Is there a solution for a seamless reconnection with SQL for our wireless clients? Is this a problem with our software or SQL? Please advise. Thank you."

Error Over Wireless

Aug 2, 2007

All:
I have an C# .net 2.0 application reading/writing data to an MS SQL Server 2005 using stored procedures.

All works well over ethernet (cabled network connection).

But I get the following error over encrypted wireless network when the application tries to execute an insert stored procedure.

[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead (recv()).]General network error. Check your network documentation.

If I change network connection using an ethernet cable, it works fine.

Any ideas why the application fails over the wireless network.

Wireless Connection is of good strength and I can access internet, ping the sql server etc.,

thanks in advance.

Timeout Issue When Connection To SQL Server In Wireless Environment

Jul 20, 2005

I am having problems with long timeouts when connecting toor executing commands in SQL Server 2000 SP3. I amwriting an application that will be used on laptops withinan environment that is wireless. The application iswritten in VB.NET using the SQL Server managed provider.I have set the "Connect Timeout" parameter on theconnection string to 15 seconds and whenever I execute acommand, I set the CommandTimeout property to 15 secondson the command object. When I open a connection where there is poor signalstrength or I am in a dead spot, I have timed the varioustimeouts the Open method gives me on the connection to beanywhere between 25 seconds to 70 seconds. Similiarresults with sending commands. When I cannot open the connection I give the user theability to retry the operation that opens the databaseconnection after they have moved back into range. Iimplemented this with a looping construct and messageboxallowing the user to hit Retry or Cancel up to 5 triesbefore it automatically cancels.Sometime on the retry it will work, but sometimes thesecond time through the loop to open the connection willnot work even if the laptop was moved back into range.I am guessing that this behavior has to do with theconnection pooling combined with the fluctuating signalstrength and timing on the WiFi network. However, I havebeen unable to find documentation or post in thenews/users groups that will help me with this issue. Anyhelp or experiences in this type of environment would beappreciated. Thanks,Dave

SQL 2012 :: Log File Data Transfer Amount (MB) Versus Data File Transfer Amount (MB)

Mar 19, 2014

In the full recovery model, if i run a transaction that inserts 10MB of data into a table, then 10 MB of data is moved in the data file. Does this mean then that the log file will grow by exactly 10MB as well?

I understand that all transactions are logged to the log file to enable rollback and point in time recovery, but what is actually physically stored in the log file for this transactions record? Is it the text of the command from the transaction or the actual physical data from that transaction?

I ask because say if I have two drives, one with 5MB/s write speed for the log file and one with 10MB/s write speed for the data file, if I start trying to insert 10 MB of data per second into the table, am I going to be limited to 5MB/s by the log file drive, or is SQL server not going to try and log all 10 MB each second to the log file?

Changing Data Source Programatically Does Not Transfer Data

Aug 29, 2006

I have created a SSIS package that transfer data from a Foxpro database to an instance of SQL Server 2005 Express. I used the wizard to create the package but I load and execute the package within a custom application that I have written in C#.

The way the custom application is intended to work is that the user can have the database in any location on the computer and all he has to do is specify the location then the application programatically changes the location of the source on the package that it has loaded and then execute it. When I initially run the package the first time (using the original path), it works fine and transfers the data. However, every subsequent time I run the application and specify a different path, the database on the SQL Server side gets created as expected but the data is not transfered!

Where am I going wrong? Do I need to save the package after I modify the source then reload and run it again or do i need to change something else in the Data Flow to make this work?

OVER Is Not Supported In Query Wizard Mode

Jul 15, 2007

I'm using VS 2005, and I built a website with a TableAdapter method using the wizard.I hand wrote a line of code: 1 WITH srtAS
2 (
3 SELECT *,
4 ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY date DESC) AS 'RowNumber'
5 FROM table1
6 )
7 SELECT *
8 FROM srt
9 WHERE RowNumber BETWEEN @start AND @end; I didn't find any syntax errors, but the Wizard keeps alerting "the over sql construct or statement is not supported." From my research, I found that it's caused by the Wizard that doesnt support some syntax. Afterall, the problem is:1. I have two parameters @start AND @end. normally if there is no "syntax error", then it will show in the TableAdapter: GetData(@Start,@end). But now since there is this "Syntax error", I won't load these two parameters.2. I saw some solutions to this "syntax error" problem, and they suggested to write query manually, don't use wizard. But I don't know how.  thanks in advance-noPC-

SQL 2012 :: Compatibility Mode Causes Query Not To Finish

Aug 8, 2015

We recently upgraded out SQL version from SQL2008R2 to SQL2014. As such, the compatibility mode changed to SQL2104 (120).

We have several queries that used to run fine that now take forever to bring back results. There are no errors (which surprised me). They just take way too long now. PLus they seem to be causing high I/O and CPU.

If I change the compt level back to SQL2008 - these queries run fine.

QUERY with SQL2008 compt level - finished in 2 minutes.
QUERY with SQL2014 compt level - finishes in 3 hours 22 minutes.

same exact query - same server - only thing changed was compatibility level.

WHat do I look for in the queries that could be causing this? (they look fine but obviously I'm missing something here)..

Encrypting Column Data While Doing Data Transfer

May 8, 2007

Hi,

I have a SSIS project where I am transferring data from DB2 table to SQL Server table. There is a column called REC_ID which I need to encrypt before we store it in SQL Server. Now, SQL Server has buildin encryption functionality and we need to use that as there are views that will decrypt this column and give data to authenticated users.

So, the question is, is there anyway that I can encrypt the column data in my SSIS package using my target SQL server database key and using SQL server encryptbykey function while transferring?

Thanks,
