Query Tables In 2 Databases Using JDBC.
May 13, 2004
I need to Query tables in 2 databases after getting a connection. I cannot make this piece of code to work. In db2, oracle this type of code works.
Class.forName("com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver");
String sys = “jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://192.168.0.152";
conn = DriverManager.getConnection(sys, "name", "pswd");
Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT * FROM pubs.jobs");
rs = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT * FROM mydb.myfile");
If I run this I get invalid object “pubs.jobs” error.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Dear all,Our application needs a bit of database redundancy.Our application only accesses database for reading purposes.We want to have two databases in separate machines. Incase one databaseserver dies the application should automatically extract data from theother server.Is there any JDBC driver available so that it can detect failure in themain database server and then tries to extract data from the standbydatabase server?Kind regards--Posted via http://dbforums.com

In database DB1, I have table DB1.dbo.Suppliers1. This table has an ID column of type INT named SUPPL1_ID
In database DB2, I have table DB2.dbo.Suppliers2. This table has an ID column of type INT named SUPPL2_ID
I would like to update DB2.dbo.Suppliers2 based on values from DB1.dbo.Suppliers1 joining on SUPPL1_ID = SUPPL2_ID.
How can I do this in SSIS?
Assumptions:
linked servers are not an option, as I want the SSIS package to be portable and not dependent on server environments.
TIA.

Dear Readers,Is it possible, like in Access, to link to tables in other SQL databases that are on the same server? I have a query that I originally had in Access that queered from multiply databases. It did this by having those other tables in the other databases linked to the database that had the query.

I'm having trouble creating and using temp tables over JDBC.
Actually, it's not so much creating as referring to a created table. What appears to be happening is that the table is created and immediately dropped, so a subsequent statement cannot refer to the newly created table.
I've already done a lot of research and experimentation and found the selectMethod=cursor connection property. Setting this property seems to have no effect.
Example queries:
1) select some.columns into #diffComp from some.table where .....
2) select * from #diffComp join foo on ......
The second query depends on the temp table #diffComp created by the first query. When I trace this in Eclipse, the value returned by getUpdateCount() on the first query is the correct number of rows. The second query is executed immediately aferwards, and ALWAYS throws :
com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Invalid object name '#diffComp'.
I'm also able to look inside the connection objet in Eclipse, and can confirm that the activeConnectionProperties member DOES contain selectMethod=cursor.
Any suggestions?

Hi,
I am using JDBC DatabaseMetaData's getColumns() to get the table names, column names and datatype of the columns. As a result, I am getting user tables as well as the system tables. How to fetch only the user tables excluding the system tables like sysindexes, etc. I know this is possible by executing a select query (using SYSOBJECTS and xtype = 'U'). But, is there anyway to fetch only the user tables using the databasemetadata API.
Please advice,

We are seeing a regression bug with the Microsoft JDBC driver 1.2 CTP.
Using this driver, we don't seem to be able to call stored procedures which return a result set, if those stored procedures use temporary tables internally.
The 1.2 CTP driver fails to access such stored procedures in both SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 databases.
The previous 1.1 driver, suceeds in both cases.
Here is a test case which demonstrates the problem (with IP addresses and logins omitted). The prDummy stored procedure being called is quite simple, and I've copied it below:
Code Snippet
public class MicrosoftJDBCDriverCallingStoredProceduresTest extends TestCase {
// CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[prDummy]
// AS
//
// CREATE TABLE #MyTempTable (
// someid BIGINT NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
// userid BIGINT,
// )
//
// SELECT 1 as TEST2, 2 as TEST2
// GO
public void testStoredProcedureViaDirectJDBC() {
Connection conn = null;
String driverInfo = "<unknown>";
String dbInfo = "<unknown>";
try {
// Set up driver & DB login...
Class.forName("com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver");
String connectionUrl = "jdbc:sqlserver://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1433";
Properties dbProps = new Properties();
dbProps.put("databaseName", "xxxxxx");
dbProps.put("user", "xxxxxx");
dbProps.put("password", "xxxxxx");
// Get a connection...
conn = DriverManager.getConnection(connectionUrl, dbProps);
driverInfo = conn.getMetaData().getDriverName() + " v" + conn.getMetaData().getDriverVersion();
dbInfo = conn.getMetaData().getDatabaseProductName() + " v" + conn.getMetaData().getDatabaseProductVersion();
// Perform the test...
CallableStatement cs = conn.prepareCall("{CALL prDummy()}");
cs.executeQuery();
// If the previous line executes okay, the test is passed...
System.out.println("Accessing "" + dbInfo + "" with driver "" + driverInfo + "" calls the stored procedure successfully.");
}
catch (Exception e) {
// Fail the unit test...
fail("Accessing "" + dbInfo + "" with driver "" + driverInfo + "" fails to call the stored procedure: " + e.getMessage());
}
finally {
// Close the connection...
try { if (conn != null) conn.close(); } catch (Exception ignore) { }
}
}
}
The output of this test under both drivers and accessing both databases is as follows:
Code Snippet
Accessing "Microsoft SQL Server v8.00.2039" with driver "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver v1.1.1501.101" calls the stored procedure successfully.
Accessing "Microsoft SQL Server v9.00.3042" with driver "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver v1.1.1501.101" calls the stored procedure successfully.
Accessing "Microsoft SQL Server v8.00.2039" with driver "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver v1.2.2323.101" fails to call the stored procedure: The statement did not return a result set.
Accessing "Microsoft SQL Server v9.00.3042" with driver "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver v1.2.2323.101" fails to call the stored procedure: The statement did not return a result set.

HiI using Java and JDBC to connect to MS SQL server 2000 (using the MSdrivers msbase,msutil and mssqlserver.jars).Sometimes it takes a long time for statement.executeQueryto return and start returning the resultset(full DB scan can take 30-40 minutes).Does anyone know if it's possible to interupt/halt the query beforeit eventually comes back. The setQueryTimeout works OK but this has to beset quite high to allow real queries to run correctly. What I'm tryingto do is allow users to halt their query if they've realised theywant to alter it or its taking too long. The query is running in aseparate thread and I've tried using the main thread to close theconnection or stop the query but this still waits until the resultsetis returned.Maybe it's a driver issue or .....ThanksMike

Hi all,
We've just stumbled on a 1.0 version incompatibility with the JDBC specs.
Problem: A table with SMALLINT column. According to JDBC specs version 3.0
(p.B-179) and 4.0 (p.221)), the value should be converted to Integer type.
Unfortunatelly we get a Short object :(
Now, I remember, this case was also affecting old JSQLConnect driver from
DataDirect. Could that problem sneak to new MS driver too?
Please let me know any resolution to this problem if exists.
The issue has not been fixed in CTP 1.1 version. Any ideas if it can be fixed??
Cheers,
Piotr

We see an unusual case where a query seems to be taking a long time (more than 30 minutes) as shown by the Java thread dump (below) - however the SQL server DB does'nt show any corresponding Connection for the query at the lower layer.
The JDBC layer seems to be "in progress" as far as processing the results of the query are concerned. If the Connection was dropped or had a failure we should have seen a corresponding SQLException in the JDBC layer - which is also not the case.
Any tips on how to debug this? Is there a timeout set on the JDBC Connection which causes it to wait before it detects any failures?
thanks

Hi,
I'm using MSSQL 2005 JDBC driver version 1.2 with MSSQL Server 2005. Getting parameter's metadata doesn't seem to be working properly there. PreparedStatement#getParameterMetaData() works fine if PreparedStatement is created for some SELECT but fails for any INSERT statements. The same code works fine with other DBs (I checked with HSQLdb and PostgreSQL). See sample below
Class.forName("com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver");
String connectionUrl = "jdbcqlserver://mssql2005\mssql2005;DatabaseName=alexdtms;user=xxx;password=xxx";
// I don't care about non-closed statements, it's just sample code
Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection(connectionUrl);
con.createStatement().executeUpdate("CREATE Table Table1 (RECORD_ID varchar, TgtQty float)");
PreparedStatement ps = con.prepareStatement("INSERT INTO Table1 VALUES ( ?,? )");
ParameterMetaData pmd = ps.getParameterMetaData();// <-- !!!! Exception is thrown here
for (int i = 1, count = pmd.getParameterCount(); i <= count; i++)
{
System.err.println(">>>>AD_TEMP " + pmd.getParameterType(i) + " " + pmd.getParameterTypeName(i) + " " + pmd.getParameterMode(i));
}
Thanks,

I am profiling a web application that is using the Microsoft JDBC driver, version 1.1 to connect to a sql server 2005 database. Each java.sql.Statement that is created, within the application, gets a query timeout value set on it ( statement.setQueryTimeout(...) ).
I have discovered that the JDBC driver creates a new thread to monitor each Statement and the query timeout value. When the application is under load these threads are getting created faster then they are being destroyed and I am concerned that this will cause a performance problem in production.
One option I have is to remove the query timeout value and the monitor threads will not be created, another is to change JDBC drivers.
I'm curious is there any way to control this behavior so that these threads are not created or are managed more efficiently. Is there a workaround that anyone is aware of? Is this considered a bug?
I have found a similar bug here for the 2000 driver:

I've got an import app written in Java. One table I'm importing from contains 22 million records. When I run the app in a 2000 environment, I have my max heap set at 512, and the table gets imported. When I run in a 2005 environment, I have to change the max heap to 1152 or it will error out with a similiar error:
com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: The system is out of memory. Use server side cursors for large result sets:Java heap space. Result set size:854,269,999. JVM total memory size:1,065,484,288. (<--this is with max heap at 1024)
what is the difference between the 2000 and 2005 JDBC that I have to set max heap in one and not the other?

Hi,
I'm writing an intranet application - a web survey engine.
I'd like to create a new database for each user that creates a survey form...
versus creating new tables for each survey.
Memory and disk space is not exactly the problem... just user permissions. If I dump all the results onto one database, doesn't it mean that this user can have access to all other tables(including the results of other surveys??)
Question is, does SQL Server reserve a bunch of memory for each database that I create, thereby hogging up a lot of space if I create more than one database.
Thank you.

Credit for this script really goes to ToddV (see http://www.sqlteam.com/Forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=13737)
The following script issues a DBREINDEX command against every table in every database on your server. It can be modified to issue other commands, but this one in particular is helpful as we are migrating about 30 databases from SQL 7 to SQL 2000 (new server) and re-indexing is recommended. Here's the script:
DECLARE @SQL NVarchar(4000)
SET @SQL = ''
SELECT @SQL = @SQL + 'EXEC ' + NAME + '..sp_MSforeachtable @command1=''DBCC DBREINDEX (''''*'''')'', @replacechar=''*''' + Char(13)
FROM MASTER..Sysdatabases
WHERE dbid > 6 -- skip the 6 built-in databases. Remove to process ALL
PRINT @SQL -- Only if you want to see the code you're about to execute.
EXEC (@SQL)
Notes: There is a limit (nvarchar 4000) to how big your command can be, so too many databases will halt this.

GENERAL-ly speaking...

To refer to the two databases I have used the following
DATABASE.OWNER.TABLE (specifically TaskMgr.dbo.TaskTable)
For both databases I get the error "Invalid object name"
What am I missing?

Hi :)
I would like to know if it is possible to link two databases together
(in my case ASPNETDB, and another mdf database) so that I can run
queries on those shared tables. For example, I would like to use the
uniqueidentifiers from the ASPNETDB tables in my own tables.
Thank you!
(I do use the latest version of Visual Web Developer).

I have two databases that each contain the same tables, but different data in the tables. For example, each data contains a table with the same name, arcus, that holds data on our customers. Although the data is different in each table, there is some overlap, particularly in the area of customer number since that is assigned automatically when a customer is entered and serves as the primary key for that table.
To consolidate, I need to merge the two databases. How can I import the data from one table in second database into a table in the first database and append a number to the customer number so that all data will be brought across.
To better illustrate:
database one has an arcus file with a field cusno and contains cusno 1-50
database two has an arcus file with a field cusno and contains cusno 27-58
The overlapping cusno's are not the same customer.
How can I get all the cusno from the arcus file in database two to the arcus file in database one?
Is this even possible?

Hi,
I am trying to relate two tables but both are from different databases. I have a database 'Current' which has a table 'case' and another database 'Org' which has a table 'employee'. I want to establish a one-to-many relationship between employee and case. I created a coulmn 'employee_key' in the case table & entered values matching the pkey of the employee table. Then I wrote a query using joins to access the table records.
select Org..employee.pkey, Current..case.assignedengineer, Current..case.pkey from Current..case join Org..employee on Current..request.employee_key=Org..employee.pkey
Although the above query works fine, there is no relation between the two tables of the two databases, I wanted to know if this is the right way to achieve what i want to or is there a way in which i can actually create a relationship between tables of two different datbases. Can anyone suggest/help???
Also, I wanted to know if i can relate 1 table of SQL Server db with another table of Oracle DB. Please help ...........

My boss has asked me to look into this and I haven't been able to find any information on the web. I hope someone can answer this for me. We currently have a single database that is storing all the user information and transactions. Within the same database we are also logging different types of user activity. If both these tables are heavily used, would it make sense to separate it into different database, one for data and one for logging? Is there any pro or cons of having more than one database? Any opinion or suggestion would be greatly appreciated. I'm the closest thing they have to DBA and I'm really new to this. Thanks.

HiI'm working on an ASP project where the clients want to be able toeffectively perform SELECT queries joining tables from two differentdatabases (located on the same SQL-Server).Does this involve creating virtual tables that link to another database, oram I completely on the wrong track?Any hints as to where I might find more information (buzz-words, etc.) wouldbe most appreciated.Thanks

In a database, I am creating a new db. From there, I am setting up thetables, so that I can eventually create a front end (usually access,but I may attempt to be brave and lose the shell.) Anyway, I want touse a table, read-only for a lookup. It exists in another database onour system. Is there a way for me to link it into this database that Iam working on? I would think of it like in access when you go to do anew table and you choose to link the table from somewhere else. Thatis what I want to do. Can anyone possibly step me through this?I know basics of sql server and like to learn.Thanks!
