Query To Update Partial String
Mar 21, 2000
Sorry, I realize that this is probably a pretty simple question for you, but I am in a quick time bind and would really appreciate it if someone could help me with this update that I'm trying to run.
Let's say you have a table (call it testtable) that contains the column "text".
Now in column text you want to replace all instantiations of the phrase "in the US" with "to the United States", how would you structure your update query to perform this change (Please note that this phrase could be embedded in the middle of a larger sentence like 'Send a package in the US'. You'd want to change this instance to 'Send a package to the United States')
Thanks in advance, I really appreciate it guys.

How would I accomplish update just a part of a field? I have 500+ records in a table that got written as \share 01234.jpg, \share 01235.jpg...\share 01734.jpg but the records should have ended with .tif instead. Now the application cannot find the correct image because the extension is incorrect. How can I use the Update statement to just change the extension on these records?
Thanks.

Could someone please help me? I am trying to pull in a partial string (the last six characters of the field, to be exact).
This is an example of my code:
select *
into #temp_2
from #temp_1 a, Server2.DBa.dbo.table2 r
where r.field1r = a.field1a and
r.field3r = a.field3a (field3a is where I need just the last 6 characters)
To be more specific:
r.field3r looks like 000884
a.field3a looks like 17445000884
So- I just want to pull in the 000884 off of a.field3a

Daily, I have to map thoursands of items into its correct category. What I have to do is Filter item by the ClSID and SCLISD, then look into the Label for where the item should be. For example from the attachment,
CLSID = 1 and SCLSID = 23 - if in the label has the keyword "notebook", its NEW_CAT should be 14 and its NEW_CATNAME is LAPTOPS;
CLSID = 1 and SCLSID = 23 - if in the Label contains Tablet PC, its NEW_CAT name should be 2474 and its NEW_CATNAME is PC LAPTOPS.
CLSID = 3 and SCLSID = 54 - if in the Label contains Watch, its NEW_CAT name should be A6052 and its New_CATNAME is SMART WATCH.
Basically, the work flow is looking into the CLSID, then SCLSID,then, Label and then assign a correct NEW_CAT and NEW_CATNAME of the item.
I have written a code but I can't get it look into specific CLSID and SCLSID.
For example, i have when upper(Label) like upper ('%Tablet%PC%') then '2474 PC Laptops'
I couldn't attach either the file or image.

We have the following two tables :
Link ( GroupID int , MemberID int )
Member ( MemberID int , MemberName varchar(50), GroupID varchar(255) )
The Link table contains the records showing which Member is in which Group. One particular Member can be in
multiple Groups and also a particular Group may have multiple Members.
The Member table contains the Member's ID, Member's Name, and a Group ID field (that will contains comma-separated
Groups ID, showing in which Groups the particular Member is in).
We have the Link table ready, and the Member table' with first two fields is also ready. What we have to do now is to
fill the GroupID field of the Member table, from the Link Table.
For instance,
Read all the GroupID field from the Link table against a MemberID, make a comma-separated string of the GroupID,
then update the GroupID field of the corresponding Member in the Member table.
Please help me with a sql query or procedures that will do this job. I am using SQL SERVER 2000.

I need to do an update to several tables that would update just a few characters w/in a string. So if the String is 1122334455 I would need to update just '1122' and replace with '0000' - leaving '0000224455'.
I've tried the update/replace functions and they're not working. How would I do this or would I just create a trigger?
Thanks in advance any info

I'm new to this forum.
This 'problem' has occured many times, but I've always found a way around it.
I have pages with datagrids, in which a user can edit a certain fields and then update the tables with new data. Lets say when a user edit a Name field and a money field. If he/she left those two fields blank, the table is automatically updated with a <null> (for the name field) and a 0 (for the money field.) Both these columns were set up to allow Null values.
Anyone has an idea why they were updated that way? And is there like a standard on how the data types are updated if a field is left blank?
Thank you very much.

I have at table that I want to update using another table which contains other values than those in the text column.
table1
id: text:
1 1111, 2222, 3333
2 1234, 2222
3 0123
table2
id: str:
1111 aaaa
2222 bbbb
3333 cccc
1234 qqqq
0123 oooo
I want to replace the text in table1 with the new values so that it looks like below:
table1
id: text:
1 aaaa, bbbb, cccc
2 qqqq, bbbb
3 oooo
My first idea was to split the text column in table1 and insert every new text with its id in a temporary table and then concaternate a new string and update the column.
But how do I manage this?

IF ((@TriggerType = 'I') OR (@TriggerType = 'D') OR (@TriggerType = 'U' AND substring (COLUMNS_UPDATED(),@char, 1) & @bit > 0))
BEGIN..........
END
END
Ideas? Thanks!

I'm an SQL novice, but I know this must be a common problem.
I'm trying to select a recordset (using ASP), but I know I only want part of the recordset, and am not sure how to limit it ahead of time.
For example, the query will return about 500 rows, but I know I only want to use a small section of these records.
I want to give the user the ability to navigate through small sections of these 500 rows without having to get all rows all the time.
I know ahead of time which rows to get, but have no idea how to limit the recordset before I get it (there is no fields in the database to help).
This is what I'm doing now. "select * from xyz where id=xxx order by date desc;" I know I only want the first 10, or 10-20, or 400-410.
The way I'm doing it now, I'm getting the whole recordset each time, doing a "rs.move x" where x is where I want to start.
This is really a waste of network traffic and memory since my SQL server is on a different machine as the web server running ASP.
How do I do this?
Please email me if you could at pmt@vantagenet.com
