Querying Data From Multiple Views
Jul 23, 2005
Hello,
I am relatively new to doing non-trivial SQL queries.
I have to get data out of 8 diff views based on a parameter Name.
There is a view having name-ssn pairs. All other views have SSN field.
For a person there MAY NOT be data in all the views.
I have to populate data into diff tables in a Report from different
views.
I would like to know what is the best way to approach it.
So far I was trying an Inner join from the Name-ssn vies to all other
views based on the SSN and test for the name field with the input
parameter.
I am thinking there will be problem of Cross join if I dont have data
in all views about a person.
Or the best way is to write query for each view and have all of them in
a stored procedure ?
Any help will be appreciated
Thanks
Bofo

If you create a view such as CREATE VIEW TestView AS Select * FROM customers_table WHERE CustomerID between 213 AND 3443 Each time you want to select from the view - is the View going to perform the WHERE clause on the customers_table, or not? Or does the view already have the virtual rows?, meaning it does not have to perform a where clause (WHERE CustomerID between 213 AND 3443) on the customers_table, and just performs an inner join with the rows it already has?

Please, could anyone tell me how to get information from which attribute of which table is the attribute from the view derived(it could also be a complex expression, not just attribute)through querying system tables or views(INFORMATION_SCHEMA, preferably if possible, because it's standard)
i'm using MSSQL2005.
Thank you!

Hi All,
My database's design is set out here. In summary, I'm trying to model a Stock Exchange for a Technical Analysis application written using Visual C++. In order to create the hierachy I'm using a Nested Set Model. I'm now trying to write code to add and delete equities (or, more generically, nodes) to the database using a form presented to the user in my application. I have example SQL code to create the necessary add and delete procedures that calculate the changes to the values in the lft and rgt columns, but these examples focus around a single table, where as my design aggregates rows from multiple tables using UNION ALL:
Code Snippet
CREATE VIEW vw_NSM_DBHierarchy -- Nested Set Model Database Hierarchy
AS
SELECT clmStockExchange, clmLeft, clmRight FROM tblStockExchange_
UNION ALL
SELECT clmMarkets, clmLeft, clmRight FROM tblMarkets_
UNION ALL
SELECT clmSectors, clmLeft, clmRight FROM tblSectors_
UNION ALL
SELECT clmEPIC, clmLeft, clmRight FROM tblEquities_
Essentially, I'm trying to create an updateable view but I receive the error "UNION ALL View is not updatable because a partitioning column was not found". I suspect that my design in wrong or lacks and this problem is highlighting the design flaws so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there!
I'm not sure how to explain this but here goes...
I'm a bit stuck, a new project that's come about "requires" me to query multiple databases as if they were tables.
1 Oracle database which stores information on our staff (this database is a part of some MIS software and can't be changed in any way)
1 SQL Server 2005 database which stores information on staff sickness
Basically say theres 1 table in each database
Oracle DB
People
Person_Code
Forename
Surname
SQL DB
Sickness
Person_Code
Daydate
Lets say the query I want to perform is to select all the records from sickness where person code is 22334 and also get their name from the other db, so the output may look like
22334 Dann Rees 01/01/2007
22334 Dann Rees 03/01/2007
22334 Dann Rees 10/02/2007
Now I realise I can write a quick function to pull the information but this is just a basic example. Effectivley what I "need" is to be able to query sickness while sub querying people to get the names, or some kind of pass through query?
Please remember this is just a very simple example and the "actual" queries will be far more complicated, for instance finding all the employees of a certain department who is male and was sick in January. All the data for that example is stored in people (oracle) except for the dates which is stores in sick (SQL 2005). Now these are easy enough if they were tables in 1 database....but their not, their tables in 2 databases, and theres nothing I can do to change that :(
All help appreciated as this is becoming very urgent.
Many thanks
Dann
(I couldnt post this in the General data access forum for some reason)

Hi all. I have the problem on query.
This is my query.
select D.fullname, P.religion, E.empno from pspersonaldata as P
inner join hremployees as E on P.dcno = E.empdcno
inner join psdatacenter as D on D.dcno = E.empdcno
where P.religion in ('Born Again','Baptist', 'Catholic')
How could I make a query that returns a result for either "Born Again, Baptist, or Catholic". The parameter would depend on the input of the user depending on how many religion the user inputed.
If the user inputed Born Again and Baptist, the result is the employees that have a religion of Born Again and Baptist.
Thanks

Hello,
This is probably a simple solution but I'm a bit confused about which flows to use.
I have two databases on different servers that contain the same information but for the appropriate server. I want to retrieve data from each of the servers using a "select" statement.
Would I use a ForLoop and change the connection in a Script Task and then execute the SQL statement? Or can a ForEach Loop be used, but I'm not sure which type of enumerator.
Thanks for any help you can give.

I am trying to query multiple tables that have the same column. They are a supposed to be a unique ID to the product, but not to the database. I have a primary key already set to each othe tables. The tables do not share anything between them, but i would like to search for these IDs in other tables before my insert command is executed. I am writing my code in VB. example of what i am trying to accomplish.
Table1 = TVs
ID/SKU_ID/Manufacturer
1 87654 Samsung
Table2 = DVD_Players
ID/SKU_ID/Manufacturer
2 765234 Kenwood
I want to search for SKU_ID in multiple tables( I think a total of 9 tables). I want to search between tables to catch for the same SKU_IDs. and if it finds it, raise error. I will be able to figure the vb.net portion. I just dont know how to go about the sql query portion. Thanks in advance and appreciate any help. Thanks!

Folks,While I still have some hair left, can someone help me with thisquery?I have a table "TestRunInfo". Amongst other fields there are"TestRunIndex" (Pri Key), "TesterID", "Duration", and "Status".The Status field links to a Status table, which links the index valueto a more meaningful label "Pass", "Fail" etc...As you may have guessed, there is a record for each test that anindividual tester runs, and with that record is a duration, and status(1,2,3 etc). What Im trying to do, is create a datasheet view, with a single rowfor each testerID, summarising that Testers work as follows:TesterID, Total Duration, Count of passed tests, Count of failed testsSo far I have:Select TesterID, sum(Duration), count(Status) FROM TestRunInfo GROUPBY TesterIDBut this of course purely gives the total number of tests run by thatengineer as the count. I need to break it down. Help? Someone? Please?!?!?TIASteve

Hi, all.
I have a question about how you would design this. I have to return a list of projects in a stored procedure with a statement like this:
SELECT ProjectID, ProjectName FROM PROJECTS;
This populates a DropDownList with all possible projects. When the user selects one, I need to find out more information about that project, like this:
SELECT a.ProjectID, a.ProjectName, b.OtherStuff FROM PROJECTS a INNER JOIN OTHERSTUFF b on a.ProjectID = b.ProjectID;
In the old ASP world, we just filled the ProjectID parameter with NULL if we wanted to return all results, and the stored procedure was set up to dynamically return results based on whether that parameter was NULL or not.
I'm looking for a more elegant way to do this. I can use two stored procedures, but I'm not sure what to name them. Obviously, I could call one 'SelectProjects' and the other 'SelectProject', but that just doesn't seem elegant enough. Anyone have any other ideas?

I'm fairly new to SQL and am just setting up a Windows 8 app using an Azure SQL server. The issue I have is looking up a part number supersession and getting the latest number. One part number can have multiple supersessions (ie RTC5756 > STC8572 > STC3765 > STC9150 > STC9191 > SFP500160 ).The data I am supplied monthly has both the superseeded items and the supersession information in both columns and is not easy to decipher - for example:
Supersessions Table
----------------------
RTC5756 | STC9191
SFP500160 | STC9191
STC9191 | STC2951
STC3765 | STC9191
STC8572 | STC9191
STC9150 | STC9191
[code]...
The newest part number is kept in a separate table - called "source" - which in this instance is SFP500160. I need access to the latest part number but also to the part's previous numbers, due to the fact that some people may still be stocking them as an old part number and for them to search by. Is there an easy and efficient way of doing both a lookup for the supersessions and a join on the two tables to minimize the queries on the database?

Hi There,
Is it possible to make views which takes Data from Multiple Servers?
NOTE: The view is very complex because it uses FOUR Diff. statements
joined together with UNION clause.
One more Q.
If my Query Analizer Displays following on execution of query.
" Internal Query Processor Error: The query processor could not produce a query plan."
What should be my approach to rectify the problem.
Any help would really be appreciated.

I have ViewA that sums up 4 fields from one table. I then have ViewB that uses ViewA to calculate the results. Now I do this with 5 different tables and then link them all to get my final results. Each View has a date range (begin / end) that I need to pass from a Web form.
How should I go about doing this? Should I create a temporary table to hold the begin / end dates to use in the sub Views? Or something else? I am at a lost on how to go about this and need some direction and syntax?
Thanks in advance for your help!!

Hey all. I have a query where I am basically querying an organizational chart. The table storing this information is basically a two column table of parent/child pairs. So you might have:
parent | child
1 | 2
2 | 3
2 | 4
3 | 6
3 | 7
4 | 8
5 | 9
8 | 10
8 | 11
Querying this table should return all child columns that flow up to the top, so querying 1 would return 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11.
I used a sample from MSDN (http://www.sqljunkies.com/Article/D7CAED46-CCAC-4FF7-B528-B2E9A274B71C.scuk) that does just this, except that when querying a value that returns more than 1000 records - I am experiencing way too long response times. The MSDN sample uses temp tables and inserts values into a temp table as it moves through the records and finds a match.
Anyone have an ideas on another way to accomplish the same thing? This is an important part of my security model as users that login should only have access to data that falls within their parent/child heirarchy.
Thanks.
Jon

Hi all, I've just started playing with data importing from Excel.
Since I know how to do linked servers, that's where I started. I created a link, querried the spreadsheet and got some strange results where data appearing in the spreadsheet returns as NULL in QA.
So, I noticed that I could use OPENDATASOURCE and OPENROWSET and tried each of them. They're returning the same data (in different column orders) also with strangely intermittant NULL values instead of the data that I see in the source spreadsheet.
I bet that this is something easy once you know what's going on. Anyone know what's going on?
Not that I think it'll matter, but the queries I'm using for these three cases are:
select * from EXCEL_A...EPIQ202$ where SUBSCRIBER_ID = '50664582103'
select * from OPENDATASOURCE('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', 'Data Source=e:EPIQ202.xls;Extended Properties=Excel 8.0')...EPIQ202$
select*
from
openrowset(
'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
'Excel 8.0;Database=E:EPIQ202.xls',
'SELECT * FROM [EPIQ202$]'
)
Thanks a bunch for your time,
Chris

Is there a way to query the name of the physical data file and/or log file associated with a given database. For example if I were to do an alter database:

Is there something I can type in to extract the file name associated with 'X' or do I have to know it implicitly?

Hi, I am using visual web developer 2005 express edition and Microsoft SQL 2005 to develop a fast-food ordering website and I am having trouble in retrieving data from a database table into a form. Can some one please teach me the way to write the syntax for retrieving or selecting a inserted value from the database? I have only know the syntax to insert data value from a form which is something like this:
'Create a New Connection to our daabase
Dim test As SqlDataSource = New SqlDataSource()
test.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("Connectionstring1").ToString
'This is the SQL Insert Command
test.InsertCommand = "Insert into Customer([Initial],[Correspondent_Name],[Correspondent_No],[Payment_Type]) VALUES (@Initial,@Correspondent_Name,@Correspondent_No,@Payment_Type)"
'Each of this insert a value into the appropriate command
test.InsertParameters.Add("Initial", DropDownList4.SelectedValue) 'This is the selected "Initial" DropDownList value
test.InsertParameters.Add("Correspondent_Name", TextBox10.Text) 'This is the Correspondent_Name value
test.InsertParameters.Add("Correspondent_No", TextBox3.Text) 'This is correspondent_no value
test.InsertParameters.Add("Payment_Type", "Pay upon delivery") 'This indicates that the payment is made with credit card
test.Insert()
But I have no idea the syntax to retrieve a data. Please help me with this matter as it is important to me. Thanks in advance!

Ivan

Using a code snippet borrowed from a co-worker, I have put together a query that, among other things, pulls a list value out of an xml clob field and displays it in the query results. My query as it stands right now is below, followed by a snippet from the xml clob that I am pulling from.
select * from
(Select Wtr_Service_Tag, Wtr_Tran_Origin, Wtr_Send_Date, Wtr_Receive_Date,
to_char(substr(wtr_req_xml,instr(substr(wtr_req_xml,1,8000),'SID')+8,12)) Asset_Tag
from ws_transactions
Where Wtr_Service_Tag In ('20458749610')
[Code] ....
This query is only able to pull the first value in the list.
I have two questions...
[1]How can I edit this query to pull all of the list items when there are more than 1? I have another field, in a separate table, that I can pull from to get that number.
[2]This one may be more complex. As currently written, the query pulls a fixed number of characters from the xml clob and either returns not enough data, or too much because the values I need to pull could be of varying lengths. I have no way to query what those lengths might be.

I am working on a project in which a customer wants to be able to list and search their inventory and display the items in a table/grid on a web page. Each item in their inventory has a set of properties - for example, manufacturer, price, serial number, name, etc. The complicated part is that they want an admin to be able to modify/add/delete the set of properties. So for example, they could add the attribute "size." Given that, I think what is needed is 3 tables - one to store the set of properties schema, one for the items, and one to store the actual properties for each item. I know i COULD use alter table statements to add and delete columns, but that doesn't seem like the "right" solution.I would like to be able to write a query such that each row returns the item and all its properties - then i can easily bind to a datagrid. However, what would the query be to do this? I also need to be able to allow the customer to query for items with certain properties - i imagine the sql for that to be similar to this:SELECT * FROM items d WHERE d.Id IN(SELECT a.ItemId FROM attributes a WHERE a.Name = "Manufacturer" AND a.Value = "Samsung") AND d.Id IN(SELECT a.ItemId FROM attributes a WHERE a.Name = "SerialNumber" AND a.Value = "3223")

I am working on a project, which involves displaying trends of certain aggregate values over time. For example, suppose we want to display how the number of active and inactive users changed over time.
One issue is how to store historical data. First of all, should I create a separate database for each historical snapshot or should I use one database for all snapshots? Second, our database size is a couple of gigabytes and replicating the entire database on a daily basis is not feasible. An alternative solution is to back up aggregate values, but how do I back up results of aggregate queries, where the user can specify a date range in the WHERE-clause? Another solution is to create fact tables from our relational schema and back those up.
Another issue is how to query historical data. Using multiple databases to store historical snapshots makes it harder to query.
As you can see there are several design alternatives and I would like to know how this sort of problem is generally solved in the industry. Does SQL Server provide any support for solving this problem?
Thanks.
