I am having a question on the SSAS2005 OLAP Cubes storage modes. We know SSAS2005 supports 3 different storage modes: ROLAP, MOLAP, HOLAP.
Do all these three storage modes of cubes store data in another physica analysis services databases which are inrelative from their data warehouse (in case they are built on top of the data warehouse)? (so it does not matter at all even we remove the data warehouse?)
Thank you very much in advance for your help and I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly.
I'm looking into adding OLAP Cubes as part of our software to be distributed with our OLTP and eventually OLAP databases. Is there any books that deal with distributing OLAP Cubes and or security. Our clients will have SQL Server with our databases. Thanks
I cannot seem to find a group where this question would fit so I amposting it here. I have what I believe is a unique situation. I amusing SQL Server Analysis Server to build a cube of "snapshot"month-end type of data. This data is from an instance of MicrosoftNavision and I have successfully used SQL-DMO and DTSPackage Libraryobjects to allow the user to rebuild the cube through Navision. Thisis accounting data and as such, the accountants want to be able toarchive this data by month. I know through Analysis Server Managerinterface I can copy the cube and save it to a different name.I would like to know if there is a way to programmatically save a cubeto a different name with some type of automation object? Thanks
While creating a model, i can access to relational tables as data source, but not to olap cubes. Is it possible to browse olap cubes for mining? If yes, how? Thanks...
How can we allow users to access a MS SQL Server OLAP cube but restrict the level of data that he might see? I mean, if there is a cube with data for three different countries. How can one user be restricted to see data pertaining to only one of the countries and not the other two countries?
Does anyone know the best way to set up filters against the Cube data. Ex. The Cube was built with data for 1998,1999, 2000. The totals and the rollups will include the value for all years. Client A want to access the Cube Data through Excel 2000 but only wants to see the values for 1999 - with the correct totals and rollups...
I know you can uncheck the other years in the filters in excel, but the totals and rollups will still include the values summing for all years.
Can someone tell me how you can automate the refresh of OLAP Cubes? I just inhereted a data warehouse running on SQL7 and the idea of having to go in and manually refresh the cubes everyday is, well... stupid. I can't believe that they've been doing this for a year. Unfortunately, I'm not familar enough with MSOLAP yet and I can't figure this out. Any tips?
i want to know whether it is possible to develop ADHOC reports using SSRS 2005 and OLAP Cubes. the requirement is the user should be able to select the columns he wants to see in the report.
I think this requires Dynamic RDL generation. It is very urgent. i have to give POC to the client on this. Any help in this regad is appreciated.
I 've read that there is a workaround for this issue by customizing errors at processing time but I am not glad to have to ignore errors, also the cube process is scheduled so ignore errors is not a choice at least a good one.
This is part of my cube where the error is thrown.
DimTime PK (int)MyMonth (int, Example = 201501, 201502, 201503, etc.) Another Columns FactBudget PK (int)Month (int, Example = 201501, 201502, 201503, etc.)
I set the relation between DimTime and FactBudget doing DimTime MyMonth as Primary Key and FactBudget Month as Foreign Key. The cube built without problem, when processing the errror: The attribute key cannot be found when processingwas thrown.
It was thrown due to FactBudget has some Month values (201510, 201511, 201512 in example) which DimTime don't, so the integrity is broken.
My actual question: is there a way or pattern to redesign this DWH to correctly deploy and process?
On the subject of Data Warehouses, Data Cubes & OLAP….I would like to speak frankly about Data Warehouses, Data Cubes andOLAP (on-line analytical processing). Has it dawned on anyone elsethat these buzz words were created by some geek who decided to take astab at marketing? Knowing that to the backwoods manager who knowslittle of technology that new innovative names for old concepts wouldhelp to sale their products.I mean seriously, what is the story here? In a nut shell, and pleasestop me if you disagree, but isn’t a data warehouse simply adatabase? Can’t you do everything on a conventional databaselike SQL Server, Oracle or DB2 that you can do on these newproprietary Data Warehouse constructs? I mean who are they trying tofool?Take a look, for instance, at Data Cubes. Who hasn’t noticedthe striking similarity between data cubes and views used in all themore robust databases? Also, what about OLAP? OLAP is nothing morethan a report generator. There’s nothing you can do with thesemillion dollar price tagged Data Warehouse total solution packagesthat I can’t do with SQL Server, Oracle or DB2…for thatmatter Microsoft Access. As an example some sales people for Metadata Corporation has the VicePresident of I.T. in Nashville, for Healthspring, sold on their totalsolution data respository which is such a scam. All they had to dowas throw a couple of buzzwords at him and they have him hypnotized.Personally, I feel that these kinds of marketing practices undermineour industry. It helps to unravel what little standards orconsistency we have. What do you guys think?Stuart
How to implement distinct storage tiers on SQL Remote BLOB Storage (RBS)?
I want to use this SQL Feature to move files(images, videos, pdf files) from a database to a distinct database dedicated to RBS. Then I want to have several storage tiers, where objects will be saved and moved according access frequency. Old data will be arquived in cheap storage, but it must be always accessible if needed.
Description: - 1st and main tier: new and frequently accessed objects stored in high performance storage; - 2nd tier: automatically move older or less accessed objects to an inexpensive and different storage tier; - in all cases, all objects must be accessible to all users, but accessing to archived objects(2nd tier) will be much slower;
Our OLAP environment involves an ETL/Data Warehouse/Data Mart server and a cube publisher server. We would like to learn how to automate the Archival/Restore of OLAP databases. We are currently doing it manually though OLAP Manager. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. James.

Hi , I have two servers, One is with per seat mode another with per license mode. when i am registering one server which is having per seat mode at one of my client machine , it is giving u dont have license permission. Can anyone suggest me regarding license modes if u have two servers.
I have a table where each unique entry can have up to 12 'modes', each mode with a start and stop date. A mode is a certain type of characteristic attributed to an entry.
There are 60 different modes and a given mode number can appear in any of the 12 mode fields. I created a very simplistic example table below.
Criteria: I need to find all entries that have any of the modes = 1
AND for any of the other mode fields = 2 or 3, all modes = 2 or 3 must have a mode_enddate that is NOT NULL.
example: select * from #temp_work where (mode1 = 1 or mode2 =1 or mode3 = 1 ...)
And if any of the other mode1-12 fields = 2 or 3 then all mode 2 or 3 mode_enddate must be NOT NULL. I have tried a few different ways to try and get this data, but none of them have been very good.
Create temporary table create table #temp_work ( id int NULL, mode1 varchar(20) NULL, mode_startdate_1 date NULL, mode_enddate_1 date NULL,
[Code ....
From this limited example, the only valid entry should be ID 1 as the mode = 3 has a NOT NULL mode_enddate.
ID's 2 and 3 both have mode_enddate_X that are NULL, so should not be included.
I have a question, I keep getting the warning where the lookup found duplicate reference key values when caching reference data. It also says to switch over to partial or no cache mode. I switched to partial and and it took way longer to run my package. I have around 200,000 records right now but this table will continue to grow. I guess my question is which mode should I be using? I have another table that will have millions of records in it.
I need to display the recovery mode of ALL databases on a server into a table. (Just like the sp_helpdb prcedure extended with the recoverymodel of each Database). Can anyone give me a hint on this or provide me with a little tsql code snipplet to realize this?
I am a Windows developer for the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server (TSMS) product. Our product installation is built with InstallShield and uses the Windows Installer.
On a new installation of Windows 2003 x64 Storage Server R2, at a customer's site, the TSMS product fails to install. The install of the OS has version 3.01.400.3959 of the Windows Installer and I see no newer version that installs.
Part of our product is 32 bit (console) and another part is x64 (server). When installing I can see that the install's default is being redirected/reset to C:Program Files (x86)TivoliTSM after it is explicitly set by a custom action to ..Program Files.. . I further observe that our custom actions to write 64 bit registry entries are being refused.
REGSAM samMask = KEY_ALL_ACCESS; if ( regIsWow64Process () ) samMask = samMask | KEY_WOW64_64KEY; lStatus = RegCreateKeyEx( hLocalConnectKeyRoot, szSubkey, 0L, NULL, REG_OPTION_NON_VOLATILE, samMask, NULL, hKey, &dw ) ; The above fails to create the key.
We have tried four versions of our TSMS spanning many changes but the install acts the same. This does not happen on any other Windows OS we test on but we do not test on Windows 2003 Storage Server R2 being that it is an OEM product. We did test on Windows server 2003 R2 x64 and do not see this problem.
Do you have any suggestions on how to tackle this problem? I have full installation traces but can only see that the registry work is being refused. I can't see why.
I am having a question on ROLAP and MOLAP storage modes. In ROLAP mode, we store all data in source relational databases and though then we can gain near real-time data for the queries. But with MOLAP and Proactive caching, we can solve this problem by setting update notifications to the MOLAP cubes. Also, with HOLAP, we can combine ROLAP and MOLAP (store leaf data in source relational database, while aggregations in MOLAP format), thus we can actually get the near real-time data for the queries as well once there is any changes to the underlying source relational database.
I am just a bit confused about the distinct benefts we can differenciate between these aspects regarding MOLAP with proactive caching and HOLAP. (not convinced about the reason to use ROLAP storage mode).
I hope my question is clear for your help and thanks a lot in advance for your advices and help for that and I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly.
I have virtual PC loaded on my machine .Everytime i try to view data in the Data Pane in Analysis Manager,it comes up with an error "Unable to browse the data(Unspecified error).I have tried restarting the DHCP services but has not no effect . Could someone please advice me.
Have 2 virtual PC's running on is the Domain Controller named as London and the other one is Brisbane which is a memebr of the domain controller. Niether the London and Brisabn are able to dispaly the data in the data pane in Analysis Manager. Please Advice.
I use the SQL Analysis Manager to create a cube and it can process successful, but when i want to browse the cube, it shows the error message: " Unable to browse the cube "my cube name", Unspecified error"
can anybody tell me what's wrong with that? thanks
