Question On Return Codes And Rollback For Stored Procedures.

I need to execute 10 stored procedures one after the other in a sequence,but need to roll back if any one of them fails and discontinue further execution.Example: if sp#3 fails it should roll back alll the changes made by sp# 1 and sp# 2 and also should not continue executing the rest of them. Any ideas?

Seems like I'm stealing all the threads here, : But I need to learn :) I have a StoredProcedure that needs to return values that other StoredProcedures return.Rather than have my DataAccess layer access the DB multiple times, I would like to call One stored Procedure, and have that stored procedure call the others to get the information I need. I think this way would be more efficient than accessing the DB multiple times. I need to somehow filter the results of my stored procedure to return the distinct "OrderNum" values. I'm using SQL database and I'm look for a way to alter the results from the stored procedure. My stored procedure rptOpenOrderLines currently returns all invoices (items under a OrderNum). I want to somehow filter those results to return one and only one of those "OrderNum" variables from the invoices. The tricky part is that I need to somehow find a way to do this without going into my database and directly altering the SQL stored procedure. I would be happy for any recommendations/ideas. Thanks!

the Parameter will be a Date.
then I want sql server to return all the classes that will happen on that date in formated string so i can display in the Asp.net caledar.

I am trying to execute a simple SELECT statement in a stored procedure from within Visual Studio 2005. The procedure executes but returns no rows. (There are rows in the table and a VIEW using the same SELECT statement does return the rows.)
I added a PRINT statement to the stored procedure to see if it executed and it did print my text in the output window as expected.
The SQL server is running on Windows Server 2003 with latest service packs and patches. I had detached the database while doing maintenance on our system and re-attached it later.
I can not find any reason why it refuses to return rows.

Hello,
This is my foray into Stored procedures, so I'm hoping this is a fairly basic question.
I'm writing a stored procedure, in which I dynamically create an SQL statement.
At the end of this, the SQL statement reads like:
Code SnippetSELECT COUNT(*) FROM StockLedger WHERE StockCode = 'STOCK1' AND IsOpen = 1 AND SizeCode = 'L' AND ColourCode = 'RED' AND LocationCode IS NULL AND RemainingQty > 0
Now this statement works a charm, and returns a single value. I want to assign this count to a variable, and use it further on in the stored procedure. This is where the problems start - I cant seem to do it.
If I hard code a statement, like
Code SnippetSELECT @LineCount = COUNT(*) FROM StockLedger
that works fine (although it brings back a count of all the lines).
But if I modify the dynamically created SQL Statement from earlier on to:
Code SnippetSELECT @LineCount = COUNT(*) FROM StockLedger WHERE StockCode = 'STOCK1' AND IsOpen = 1 AND SizeCode = 'L' AND ColourCode = 'RED' AND LocationCode IS NULL AND RemainingQty > 0
it doesnt work - it complains: Must declare the scalar variable "@LineCount".
Just to clarify, when I say "dynamically created an SQL statement, I mean that by a bunch of conditional statements I populate a varchar variable with the statement, and then eventually run it exec(@SQLStatementString)
So, my question would be, how do I do this? How do I make a dynamically generated SQL statement return a value to a variable?

Hi all,
I have one application through which i m installing SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
If some failure occures, all I get is one exitCode which is a return code of SQL Express installer. Is there any way by which I can find out the exact reason of failure.
One example is error code 28062.
This error code is for "sql is unable to install on compressed folder / drive".
Please help

Table1 contains a CODES column which may store multiple codes separated by commas.
The descriptions for these codes are stored individually in a column in in Table2.
I would like to return the descriptions from Table2 in the same format as the codes from Table1.
Table1 Stores multiple codes per ID in a single column.

I've found two different queries which return each code and associated description by ID in separate rows. Perhaps the next step is to aggregate from this?

I have a procedure that calls other procedures which in turn call other procedures. I have a transaction in the first procedure since I want to rollback everything done if something goes wrong except for rows inserted in a loggtable in my database. The reason for this is that all error shall be saved in this table, otherwise there is no way to find out what error occured.
How do you solve this?

I have a package that I have been attempting to return a error code after the stored procedure executes, otherwise the package works great.
I call the stored procedure from a Execute SQL Task (execute Marketing_extract_history_load_test ?, ? OUTPUT)
The sql task rowset is set to NONE. It is a OLEB connection.
I have two parameters mapped:
tablename input varchar 0 (this variable is set earlier in a foreach loop) ADO.
returnvalue output long 1
I set the breakpoint and see the values change, but I have a OnFailure conditon set if it returns a failure. The failure is ignored and the package completes. No quite what I wanted.
The first part of the sp is below and I set the value @i and return.

Why is it not capturing and setting the error and execute my OnFailure code? I have tried setting one of my parameter mappings to returnvalue with no success.

Hi,
This Might be a really simple thing, however we have just installed SQL server 2005 on a new server, and are having difficulties with the set up of the Store Procedures. Every time we try to modify an existing stored procedure it attempts to save it as an SQL file, unlike in 2000 where it saved it as part of the database itself.

I ran the above project in VB 2005 Express and I got the following 5 errors:

In sp, there are a lot of insert and update. If i execute SP and stop it in half way. will it rollback all update and insert statement? also, will it rollback if it fails?

Does anybody knows How does the rollback data stored in SQL 2005?
For example I am inserting 100 new rows into a table, so how does SQL keeps track of them as new rows which are yet to be committed?
Internally does SQL has any indexing to recognise the data which is not yet committed? Can we also write some queries on the table which will fetch us the non-committed insertions on the table?
If you have any clue about how does SQL 2005 handles this Rollback/Commit functions internally pls explain.

Hi all, I have a program that needs to delete records, then re-insert new records to a table. But I need to rollback the transaction IF the insert is not success (error occured). The delete and insert are in 2 difference stored procedure (which have rollback transaction) that calling from 1 stored procedure. My problem is that if Insert is not successful, but the records already deleted previously. How can we rollback the delete transaction when insert is not successful?
Note: if possible, I don't want to delete the records AFTER the insert is successful, or create a temp table to stored the deleted records

i haven't had an opportunity to do this before. I have nested stored proc and both inserts values into different tables. To maintain atomicity i want to be able to rollback everything if an error occurs in the inner or outer stored procedure.

Using SQL 2005, SP2. All of a sudden, whenever I create any stored procedures in the master database, they get created as system stored procedures. Doesn't matter what I name them, and what they do.
For example, even this simple little guy:

Gets created as a system stored procedure.
Any ideas what would cause that and/or how to fix it?

In general as understand if we have a stored procedure that does operations like inserts or updates, it makes perfect sense to use a rollback operation within a transaction.
So, if something goes wrong and the transaction does not complete, all changes will be reverted and an error description will be thrown for example.
Nevertheless, does using a rollback within a try catch statement, make sense in a read only stored procedure, that practically executes some dynamic sql just to select data from some tables?
I have around 100 Stored procedures, all of them read only. Today a colleague suggested adding try-catch blocks with rollback to all of them. But since they are just selecting data, I don't see a clear benefit of doing so, compared to the hassle of changing such a big number of SP's.

I have a stored procedure that selects the unique Name of an item from one table.
SELECT DISTINCT ChainName from Chains
For each ChainName, there exists 0 or more StoreNames in the Stores. I want to return the result of this select as the second field in each row of the result set.
SELECT DISTINCT StoreName FROM Stores WHERE Stores.ChainName = ChainName
Each row of the result set returned by the stored procedure would contain:
ChainName, Array of StoreNames (or comma separated strings or whatever)
How can I code a stored procedure to do this?

I have MSSQL 2005. On earlier versions of MSSQL saving a stored procedure wasn't a confusing action. However, every time I try to save my completed stored procedure (parsed successfully ) I'm prompted to save it as a query on the hard drive.
How do I cause the 'Save' action to add the new stored procedure to my database's list of stored procedures?

We recently upgraded to SQL Server 2005. We had several stored procedures in the master database and, rather than completely rewriting a lot of code, we just recreated these stored procedures in the new master database.
For some reason, some of these stored procedures are getting stored as "System Stored Procedures" rather than just as "Stored Procedures". Queries to sys.Objects and sys.Procedures shows that these procs are being saved with the is_ms_shipped field set to 1, even though they obviously were not shipped with the product.
I can't update the sys.Objects or sys.Procedures views in 2005.
What effect will this flag (is_ms_shipped = 1) have on my stored procedures?
Can I move these out of "System Stored Procedures" and into "Stored Procedures"?
