Question On Reading From SQL SERVER

Apr 21, 2004

ok I use a datareader..Perhaps not the best method..but...if a better one exsits please let me know...

The problem...

I get info on a user....It returns an unknown amount of rows back....lets say two for instance....

ok...

How do I tell the number of rows....also the ability to reference each row and items in that row....

..

i.e. Row contains this

uname | password | address | Phone | notes

Like I said could contain multiple rows

I need to figure out info for specific rows and items in it....

in datareader I know you can reference each item which I guess you could use x number of variables to get each item in the row but that is tedious....

IS there a better answer????

Problems Reading Data From Linked Server To Excel In SQL Server 2005

Oct 4, 2007

I have an Excel sheet that is dynamically updated (through DDE) and I want to import this data to a table in SQL Server 2005. Using SQL Server Management Studio to configure an Excel data source as a linked server.
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306397/EN-US/)

Following the first 5 steps should let me acces the table (but I cannot view the data in SQL Server 2005). However, I could not find how to export the data into an existing table. Does anyone know how or can give a pointer to document describing how to do this?

Reading XML Data From Another Server

Mar 24, 2008

Not sure if I am posting this in the correct placed. Here is what I am trying to do. Read an xml files which is very large and is our store xml file. I want to import this data into a database nightly. I can down load the file and I have noticed that it has one line in it that will keep me from reading it: <!DOCTYPE StoreExport SYSTEM "http://..../doc/dtd/StoreExport.dtd"> Once I removed this line I can get the data needed to go into the database. I would removed the old table first then replace it with the information from here.

Can anyone help. I hope I have given enough information for this type of issue. I was told integration services would do this, but I am not sure how. Could someone point me in the right direction.

Thank you for any an all help.

How To Change Text On Web Automatically From Reading A SQL Server?

Jun 17, 2004

A section of this company's intranet site where I just started interning at has little company anniversary and birthday sections that look like (for the anniversary section.. in the birthday section, it looks the same, except it doesn't say how old the comployee is):

-Steve Cunningham 6/1 - 6 yrs
-Andrew Brown 6/3 - 11yrs
-Lisa Stone 6/4 - 3 yrs

How can I get it so instead of manually changing that text every month, it will look at a SQL database and automatically change that text every month? I'm guessing the pseudocode would be if the b-day or anniv. month matches the current month, display the first and last name, the date, and number of years (which would have to be calculated maybe?) Any help would be GREAT! Thanks!!

Reading A Negative Double From SQL Server 2005 Express DB

May 26, 2008

Hi all,I'm reading some doubles from a DB table using c# and some of these doubles are negative numbers.They are negative because the doubles are GPS data and all my Longitude values are, for example, '-6.214545'.Now, I physically put these doubles into the table by typing the '-' character and then the number.What is happening is that the code is reading it as a positive double, which obviously throws off the whole App as the difference between '-6.214545' and  '6.214545' is massive!I've declared them as type decimal(18, 6) Any ideas as to what might be the problem???

Transaction Reading From Linked Server Without DTC? (Isolation Level?)

Feb 9, 2006

Is there a way to read data from a linked server,within a transaction, without using DTC?The data on the linked server is static, thereforethere is no need for two-phase commit. There isno need for locking data on the linked server, becauseit is not being updated (either from the remote server,or from the local server).I don't want to run DTC because:1.) there have been security-related flaws with DTC inthe past2.) the application doesn't do distributed updates, andbecause the data on on the remote server is static,there is really no data integrity exposure withoutDTC.I cannot specify "WITH (NOLOCK)" on the select fromthe linked server:Server: Msg 7377, Level 16, State 1, Line 6Cannot specify an index or locking hint for a remote data source.I tried setting the isolation level:SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ UNCOMMITTEDbut that seems to have no effect on the requirement to use DTC.I still get the message:MSDTC on server 'LOCALSERVER' is unavailable.Is there some other way around this? Is it possible to provide someconnection string parameter, in the linked server setup, that wouldspecify the "READ UNCOMMITTED" isolation level for the linked server,so that DTC wouldn't be necessary.(In other words, can I tell SQL Server, "trust me, this won't hurt"?)Environment: SQL Server 2000 sp4The SQL does something like:declare @x char(4), @k int, @rc1 int, @rc2 intset @k=123BEGIN TRANselect @x=xfrom remoteserver.remotedatabase.dbo.tablewhere k=@kupdate localdatabase.dbo.table1set x=@xwhere k=@kset @rc1=@@errorupdate localdatabase.dbo.table2set x=@xwhere k=@kset @rc2=@@errorif (@rc1 = 0 AND @rc2=0) COMMIT TRANelse ROLLBACK TRAN

ASP.NET Reading Package List From Remote SSIS Server

Feb 14, 2008

Hi everyone!

I have a question regarding ASP.NET 2.0 reading available packages (calling "GetDtsServerPackageInfos" on the "Application"-Object which returns "Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.PackageInfos") from a remote SSIS server (not running them). It seems to me that I am experiencing either a security/delegation issue or that I am trying to do something that is not possible...

The setup is the following.

I have two machines, A and B. A runs IIS 6/ASP.NET 2.0 and B runs SQL Server and SSIS. They belong to the same domain. IIS runs the application pool with the webapplication in question under the "Network Service" account and A is trusted for delegation to B. At the moment its trusted when using Kerberos and for MSSQLSrvc and rpcss; but I tried "all" and many more as well.

I configured IE to use Windows Authentication and set the URL to belog to the Intranet (to enable kerberos authentication).

My ASP.NET webapplication now tries to read (in the sense explained above) the available packages on the SSIS machine (B). The packages are stored on the filesystem, not in mdsb. But I feel that this does not matter, since ASP.NET is accessing them through "the SSIS service" which can access packages in msdb or/and on the filesystem?

What happens now is that

a) everything works, when I fire up IE on A and access the webapplication. The user I have on A is a local admin.
b) I get "E_ACCESSDENIED" when I start IE as regular User on A
c) I get "E_ACCESSDENIED" when I access the webapplication from any other machine than A (IE6 or IE7)

My main question is: is it possible to do what I want to do? The other question is, why does everything work when I access the webapplication from A, but not from any other machine? The second thing makes me think it could be a delegation issue (double hop and SSIS don't seem to go togethe too well). But still, I could not find any resource telling me that this is impossible And frankly, I do not fully understand delegation and/or Kerberos.

I would greatly appreciate if anybody had a pointer or something for me.
Regards
scherand

Btw: Thanks to Caddre for his (her?) first help and pointing me to this forum.

SQL Server 2005 Integration Service (SSIS) Reading HTTP Data

Jan 16, 2008

I need to read in general web pages (not a web service) from a typical web site using SSIS and make it available for other SSIS transformations (Script Component). I tried using the XMLSource data source but this appears to require well formed XML, and will not accept HTML which is what I am likely to be getting from the web pages.
I tried a HTTP Connection Manager with a DataReader Source, but seems to only accomodate web services.

Can this be done? If someone has an example (tutorial) of how to accomplish this I would greatly appreciate a copy.

Calling An SQL Server 2005 Stored Procedure Within Microsoft Access And Reading Values

Jan 14, 2008

Goodday.

I have finally been able to create a connection from Access to the SQL 2005 Server and was able to call a stored proc (in Server) in the following way

Code Block
Dim cnn As New ADODB.Connection
Dim cmd As New ADODB.Command
Dim rst As New ADODB.Recordset

cnn.ConnectionString = "Provider='sqloledb'; Data Source='Private';" & _
"Initial Catalog='DBName';Integrated Security='SSPI';"

cnn.Open

cmd.ActiveConnection = cnn
cmd.CommandText = "sp_DefaultEntityData"
cmd.CommandType = adCmdStoredProc

Set rst = cmd.Execute

rst.MoveFirst
Do While Not rst.EOF
lstEntity.AddItem (rst.Fields(0)), 0
'lstEntity.AddItem (rst.Fields(1)), 1
rst.MoveNext
Loop

The Stored Proc is as follow:

Code Block
set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
go

ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_DefaultEntityData]
AS
BEGIN

SET NOCOUNT ON;

SELECT tblEntities.[Name], tblEntities.PrimaryKey
FROM tblEntities
ORDER BY tblEntities.PrimaryKey;

END

The table contains 24 entries

As you can see in the VB code, I am trying to read the returned "table" into an Access ListBox. The listbox should display the entities Name but not the Primary key, but the primary key should still be "stored" in the to so that it can be used to access other data.

I have moved the tables from Access to SQL Server 2005, and would also like to port all the sql queries to sp's in SQL Server. The old way for populating the listbox was a direct SQL query in the RowSource property field. I have tried to set the lstEntity.RowSource = rst but it did not work.

Here are my Q's:
1) As what does the SP return when it is called and is there a better way to catch it than I am doing at the moment?
2) How do I read the values into the listbox, without displaying the primary key in die box?

Thank you in advance!
Any help is very much appreciated.

DataReader Not Reading

Jan 13, 2004

Why won't this dataReader read?

Dim objCon2 As New SqlConnection()
objCon2.ConnectionString = "a standard connection string"
objCon2.Open()

Dim objCommand As SqlCommand
objCommand = New SqlCommand(strSQL, objCon2)
Dim objReader As SqlDataReader
objReader = objCommand.ExecuteReader()

Label1.Text = objReader("email")

strSQL is a select command which I've checked (using SQL Query analyzer) does return data. I know the connection string is valid (and I presume if it wasn't that it'd fail on objCon2.open, which it doesn't).

So why oh why do I get this error on the last line (and yes, there is an "email" field in the contents of the reader)

System.InvalidOperationException: Invalid attempt to read when no data is present.
