Questions On Backup And Report Services

Nov 17, 2006

Hi,

I am thinking of using SQL and VB express for a project. Reading different versions information lead me to the following understanding on bakups and report services. Please comfirm my understanding or correct me if I am wrong. Any suggestion is always welcome.

1. SQL express does not include Agent Job Service so I cannot schedule a backup job or daily report to run automatically at a specific time. Is there a work around on this?

2. If I install the SQL express with the Advance Services edition, I still have to install the express tool kit to get the business intelligence developer studio in order to generate the reports. Do I have to install both on the same machine (the server) or the advance edition on the server and the tool kit on the client machine?

Thanks,

Bernie

Questions On Backup

Mar 22, 2000

Using Backup wizard it would not let me choose to reorg data and index pages and
also update statistics. I don't understand why these are mutually exclusive. Does
a reorg update statistics for non-unique secondary indexes that are not clustered?

I was also asked if I wanted to backup to a backup device or to a file. In 6.5 I would backup
to a backup device which was a file on my drive. In 7.0 I am missing the distinction of
one being better than the other. Can anyone give a clue to the clueless?

Backup Questions.

Sep 20, 2006

What is the best way to set up this back up solution. We would like to be able to restore to a point in time.

Here is what I'm planning on doing.

Full backup Sunday nights
Diff backups M-F
log backups Sunday - Friday

Now i'm guessing that we need to set up 3 jobs. The full backup job, the diff backup job and the transaction backup job.

If so i would run the full backup at 6PM on Sundays then have a log job run every 30 minuets from m-f and have a differental backup job run once M-F.

This way i can restore to a point in time correct. I'm just confused with the log backups.

If i need to restore to a point in time say Tuesday night and I take diff backups everyday at 6AM. I would first restore the full sunday backup then the Tuesday diff backup and then the all the log backups that took place after the diff backup correct?

thanks for your time.

Backup Questions

Aug 8, 2004

If I have a full backup scheduled at 6pm and a scheduled transaction log backup begins during the 15 minutes the full takes to complete, how would I use the transaction log backup during a recovery sequence?

Does the transaction log backup contain transactions that are captured in the full recovery since they both occured concurrently? Using RESTORE HEADERONLY I see they both are stamped as finishing at the same time.

Would I restore the full and then restore this tran log backup or go to the next tran log backup?

Thanks,

Some Questions About SQL Backup

Mar 20, 2007

In SQL 2005 SMO
documentation, there is a DeviceType enum:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.sqlserver.management.smo.devicetype.aspx

It
seems there is no doucmentation about 'LogicalDevice', what's the
difference between that and 'VirtualDevice' ? (for the latter, I guess
we need to implement a VDI driver)

Another question is that,
suppose we want to backup a database to a hard drive file, I could use
either T-SQL or SMO, what's the advantage of using SMO?

Thanks!

Backup Questions.

Aug 24, 2007

I made a dsicovery today that must change the way I do backups. I realized that each backup ADDs the whole database to the previous backup without deleting the previous instances (for previous backup days). If it is true, and I want Jens or someone else to confirm it, then what shall I do?

I do not need this old archive. I want to just store the latest version of my database. What I've had so far is a waste.

The log files also grow to enormous size for no reason.

Shall I delete all backup files each time and recreate them before doing backups?

Also, I have trouble opening up log files. I think I did it once or twice in the past but now do not remember how I did it. The system is asking me for a proper editor and anything I tried did not work.

How shall I open a log file

Thanks.

Backup - Restore Questions

Feb 12, 2008

Hello,
1) We run full backup on SQL server 2005 on weekly basis (Sundays), diff - every night, and backup of tran logs every hour. Let me descrive the following scenario: if our server would crash on Wednesday at 5 pm, how can I restore it properly? Do I need to restore it from full Sunday backup + latest diff backup from Tuesday night + latest tran logs from 4 pm? We have full recovery mode on the databases.
2) If we change recovery mode from full to simple, is it possible we have data loss in case if the server crashes let's say at 1 pm, and we have full backup only from previous midnight only?

Thank you,

Questions About Reporting Services....

Mar 31, 2007

Hi all. I have many concerns on reporting services. Hope you help me alot explaining as I fully undestand it.

1. I am new in reporting services. Anybody can tell me the BIG difference of SQL SP1 and SP2?

2. Can anyone give the SHARED FUNCTION/ aggregate method not being supported by the aggregate functions. (These are the methods written in REPORT CODE)...

3.I have REPORTS(Business Intelligent Project) on my local machine hosted to the report services of the MACHINE SERVER. Then, reports are shown in REPORT VIEWER in my C# WINDOWS application project. My question is : How can other workstations run the same reports(Reports that I made)? We are using Team Foundation Server(TFS) to share the REPORTS and C# application project. I not yet tried to share the report, however I am expecting the report will work in other workstation. Is it?

4. Reporting services will only run in IIS, right? and you need first to RUN the SQL MANAGER, right? I have 10 workstations and 1 SERVER MACHINE. I made the SERVER MACHINE as the report server. Am I doing right? or Am I thinking the right idea/approach? Give me guidance on this...

5. What are the advantages of the reports being hosted to the reporting services? or shall i say, what is the difference of the crystal report to the reports hosted to the reporting services.

.:. Edit...(Added)

6. Can someone tell how to set the datasourcecredential in my c# windows application? I see the methods in MSDN but I really don't know how to use the methods.

7. How to set the reports directly to PRINT LAYOUT MODE if I preview it?

Thanks.

SQL Server Reporting Services Questions

Nov 8, 2004

I've installed SQL Server Reporting Services and designed few useful reports on local workstation, now I want to deploy those on the production reporting server.

I have the following questions:

1) We have some demo databases with the similar structure so the the same report would fit all the demos.
Is there any way to change the connecting string for the report programmatically without recreating report each time ? May be there is a way to pass database name to the report (encrypted) ? Is there any way to

2) I'd like to be able to protect those reports from unauthorised users ? Is there any way of doing that ? Is there any way to set up security on the base of folder anf for the whole group of reports ?

Thanks

Reporting Services - A Couple General Questions

Mar 14, 2008

A couple questions about SQL Server Reporting Services:
 1. Can it be used for other data sources besides SQL Server (Oracle db, XML files, via APIs, etc.)?
2. Can it do ad hoc reporting? I like the "universes" that the SAP Business Objects product allows. Does Reporting Services have something like this, to provide a simplified view that non-technical business users can use to create their own reports? Or is Reporting Services just the equivalent to Crystal Reports?

(I wanted to post this in the general MSDN forum for SQL Server, but I can never log in there for some reason.)

High-level Reporting Services Questions.

Mar 11, 2008

Hello, we have a customer-facing ASP.NET web reporting application that allows the user to a). select a report b). make report settings (filter, sort, include/exclude columns), and c). run the report. An Oracle stored proc is used to return the data into a DataSet. Today the output is displayed in a bound, paginated DataGrid.

We€™d like to €˜plug-in€™ Reporting Services for improved formatting, grouping, matrix reporting, drilldown, graphics, etc.. I have read through the online docs, examples, and tutorials but have not found the exact (high-level) information I€™m looking for.

We need to keep our report settings page, Oracle SP architecture, etc... Is there a way to simply hand off a dynamically created DataSet to a report for display €“ like binding to the DataGrid? The data (query) would be specific to a report but columns can be selected/unselected for display.
In terms of deployment, is it necessary to install SQL Server in each environment (DEV-Integration, QA, PROD) to support Reporting Services? Since we are essentially an Oracle shop, this could be a tough sell. Is it possible to develop the report on a dev workstation (perhaps with SQL Server), and then publish to a web server where SQL Server is not installed?

These are obviously high-level questions - any help will be appreciated (examples, how-to's, etc..) €“ thanks in advance.
-Bill

RDLC Newbie Questions (hopefully)...connecting Dataset To Report That Contains Multiple Data Tables

Sep 12, 2007

Hi All,

We are post-deployment with a serious reporting issue that's causing us to rethink our reporting solution. We're considering moving from what we have to SQL Server Reporting Services (client side).

I have spent the past couple of days getting up to speed on this feature and seeing if we can easily migrate it into our existing application. However, I've hit a couple of stumbling blocks and was hoping perhaps someone here could either tell me the solution or point me in the right direction.

I'm not having any problems creating basic reports (e.g. flat data).

However, I am having problems creating reports where there are related tables in a dataset.

The way it works with our existing solution is that I get a dataset (which contains several data tables) and point it to the report's datasource. That report expects those tables and I have defined table-relationships in the report which process and display the information correctly.

I'm not having as much luck with RDLC.

I can go into futher detail about how I'm creating the report, but let me just ask these general questions first:
1. Can I set a dataset containing multiple datatables equal to a property on an RDLC report and that RDLC report know how to treat and display the data?
2. Is there a better/smarter than this to get a field selection from my datasource (remember, this information is coming from a stored procedure so connecting directly to the database is not an option):
a. In code, populate dataset
b. In code, write dataset schema to xml (e.g. an xsd file)
c. In Visual Studio, add the XSD file to project
d. Use fields from XSD file to drag and drop fields on report

A fancy example would be nice too. I've googled like crazy the past couple of days and downloaded as many samples as I can find (including the ones on ftponline.com, gotreportviewer.com, "Tudor's WebLog", and several others). However, I have yet to find one that uses grouping and related datatables.

Thank you so much (if, for nothing else, reading this post )

Writing Reports/Extracting Data/Header Info/Reporting Services (2 Questions Really)

Aug 13, 2007

I have a program where I have to do a weekly data upload of approx 1,500 records. I've written the sql, but need to know how I can add static header text to the SQL statement.the text I need in the header is Reportname(Static  string) + #rows (Rowcount of the sql,  int) + department (String static) I'm planning on writing it and saving it as a package, then schedule it to run every Friday at 5:00.  But I have been reading a little on Reporting Services and wonder if people think it' might be the way to go? Is it a whole new area of security issues? Or is it worth installing and learning? I will have more and more reports I need to write that will increase in complexity, and want to know if I want to keep writing querys by hand, or use reporting services. Thanks in advance! Dan

Reporting Services :: SSRS Report Runs In Visual Studio But Not Report Manager

Jul 5, 2012

I have written a report visual studio.  The report has 10 multi-value parameters that pull data from their individual data sets within the reports.  When running the report from within Visual Studio it renders fine.  There are no errors reported, only a warning related to a pathname I have use to retrieve image data and display on the report.Deployment of the report is error free. When I view the report I briefly get the "Loading" splash window, but then nothing.  None of the headers or static text is displayed.  The results window is blank.

The report defaults all the parameter values.  In trying to debug the issue I have found by reducing the number of parameter values the report will render.  Once I have all the values added, the report does nothing.Below is the query being used for the report.  The where clause in the query shows the parameters being used and the syntax. We are running on Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2.

Reporting Services :: Open Report In Excel But Need Raw Data Not Duplicate Of Report Output

Nov 23, 2015

We are about to implement SSRS reports (SQL Server 2012), and have found one issue we don't like. The report looks great when we open it in pdf format. However, when we open it in Excel format, we want it to be the raw data, not look like the pdf report. I tried the simpl headers, and that removed the page header/footer. However, the report format was still in play.In other words, we would like the report when opened in Excel, to look just like it does when we open it as a CSV.I have tried to modify the config file a couple of times. Here is my latest attempt:

Extension Name="CSV" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.DataRenderer.CsvReport,Microsoft.ReportingServices.DataRendering">
    <OverrideNames>
     <Name Language="en-US">CSV (comma delimited)</Name>
    </OverrideNames>
   </Extension>
   <Extension Name="CSV" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.DataRenderer.CsvReport,Microsoft.ReportingServices.DataRendering">
    <OverrideNames>
     <Name Language="en-US">Excel (csv)</Name>
    </OverrideNames>
   </Extension>

Essentially I have set Visible = "false" for the Excel type, and tried to duplicate the CSV, changing the name to make it look to the user like it is "Excel". This fails. I checked the event viewer, and I see two entries.. The RSReportServer.config file has been modified. (Information)The value for UrlRoot in RSReportServer.config is not valid. The default value will be used instead.I literally took the file, opened it in Notepad, pasted in my changes, from another notepad window, and tried to run the report. I did not see EITHER of the two names I expected, using the OverrideNames tag. As I said earlier, I was able to affect the outcome, by setting SimpleHeaders to true (or however it is identified). That did work in that the page header and footer was removed.

columns are **Level**  and              **Salesamount**.

Values are like

**[-]category**              **100**
    **[-]subcat**             **50**
         **product**          **30**

when i click on 100, parameters are passed & it open the detail report correctly, but when i click on 50,the values for subcat parameter is not getting values in detail report and same as the product also.

Here i used the expressions in parameter values

**psubcat**----iif(inscope(subcat),!fields.subcat.value,split(join(Parameters!subcat.value,","),","))

Reporting Services :: SSRS Linked Report Based On Calculated Field From Main Report

Oct 6, 2015

How do I get data on my linked report based on my grouped subtotal and grand total from the main report.  The subtotal and grand total are calculated columns.

I have a 3 columns in my matrix in the SSRS summary report. Actn_COAST, ActnCITY and NumbOfAccts.

The following is code for my summary report.  The results are shown below.

SELECT Distinct ActnCITY, Count(ACCT) as NumbOfAccts,
CASE WHEN ActnCITY in ('NY', 'OH', IN, 'NJ', 'SC', 'NC') THEN 'EAST COAST'
WHEN ActnCITY IN ('CA'. 'NV', 'UT', 'WA', 'OR') THEN 'WEST COAST'
ELSE 'OTHER'
END AS Actn_COAST

FROM tbl1
where ACTNDATE between @STARTDT and @EndDT

Code for my detail report contains the following SQL

SELECT * FROM tbl1 where ACTNDATE between @STARTDT and @EndDT AND @ActnCITY = ActnCITY

I have linked my report based on the NumbOfAccts column.  I am able to get data if I click any of the NumbOfAccts values related to the state I want.  However when I am not sure how to make the subtotal and grand total work.  I want when I click on the subtotal of either coast, I should be able to see records of that coast e.g., if I select 37 I should be able to see all the records in East Coast.  If I click on the Grand Total, I only want data related to those 2 coasts.
