RS 2000 - Can't Start Report Manager / Permission Errors / Need To Update Data Source

Jul 5, 2007

We are going insane trying to start Report Manager on a SQL Reporting Services 2000 installation. The programmer/admin who originally set this up for us is gone.

We recently upgraded a database/application server to a new server, causing the data source being used by reports in reporting services to no longer be valid. Unfortunately, we do not have access to the original report project to 're-deploy' with the corrected data source.

We desperately need to get the reports that are installed to retrieve their data from the new database location/machine. We understand this can be done by specifying a new data source in Report Manager. (To clarify, we have NOT moved the report servier installation or database, these remain in place - it's just the deployed reports that no longer point to the correct data source.)

For some reason, our Report Manager will no longer run - when we try to launch it, we get a windows login dialog - nothing will work here. We've tried both local and domain admins and constantly get ACCESS IS DENIED 401.3 error messages that we do not have permission/problems with ACL's.

We've gone so far as to allow EVERYONE read/write access to the ReportManager and ReportServer folders and the RS virtual directories, but nothing seems to help.

Can anyone help with this? Ideas on how to change our data source, or how to get back into Report Manager?

Since we are somewhat technical, but not experts, and don't have much more time to waste, we are willing to pay $500 for this project to someone willing to access the server and fix the problem so that the reports point to the correct database and restore access to Report Manager.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Reporting Services :: Set Data Source In Report Manager For Whole Folder Rather Than Each Report?

Aug 28, 2015

I have few reports under different folders in Report Manager. Is there a way to set the data source for the whole folder rather than each report individually? There is also a folder where reports generate dynamically. Since the report project doesn't exist anymore, I can't set the data source through code. How can I set the data source for the whole folder?

Oracle Data Source Connection Problem Using Report Manager

Jan 2, 2007

I have an issue when using Report Manager for viewing reports that use a certain Oracle data source. When viewing the reports in Report Designer the reports display without problems. But when trying to display the reports with Report Manager, after deploying the reports to the Report Server, I now get the following error message:

blablabla....ORA-12705: invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified

For testing purposes I am running Report Designer, Report Server and Report Manager locally on a PC with Windows XP. I am using Reporting Services 2005, IIS 6, Visual Studio 2005, an Oracle 9.x client and an Oracle 9.x (not 100% sure) database that is hosted on a remote server.

Earlier I got an error message that stated "ORA-12154: TNS: could not resolve the connect identifier specified". Access rights to some Oracle folders for the Network service account did the trick here but then I got the "NLS parameter" error message. What I have tried to do is removing the NLS_LANG register variable and also modified the value of the variable so that it matches the value of the NLS_LANG variable on the server that hosts the Oracle database, but none of them have worked. Any ideas?

Maybe this is an issue that is more appropriate in an Oracle forum but what the heck..the problem could reside in Reporting Services..

Thanks, Stefan

Power Pivot :: Structural Data Model Changes In Data Source Leads To Errors

Oct 12, 2015

I've question about how to handle structural datamodel changes in a datasource of PowerPivot. Suppose I'm developing a starmodel in SQL Server and sometimes a datatype changes or a name of a field changes in a table. It seems to me that PowerPivot handle this not gracefully as Analysis MD does (mostly). I received an error because of a wrong fieldname or even no error when a dattype changes in PowerPivot. Is this common or do I something wrong here. Does this mean that every time the datamodel changes the PowerPivot should be recreated? Or am I missing the clue here?

Connection Manager Or Data Source

Feb 12, 2007

For seting up the connection should we use Connection Manager or New Connection From Data Source?

The advantage of using Data Source is that we have the connection avalilable at project level but I've studied it somewhere that Data Source is used for SSAS not SSIS.

But I don't have enough explanation to give it to my team, that why I am not using Data Source.

We are working on VSS, do we have to reset the connection managers if want to test our packages on some other machine(else than the one on which it was developed)?

Data Source And Connection Manager

Jan 8, 2007

Hi all,

I don't really understand the difference between the "data source" and the "connection manager" in a SSIS solution.

I tried to create a data source (if I understood correctly, I will ba able to share that connection between all packages in the solution), then I create a new connection manager inside a package. But when I make a modification in the data source, nothing change in the connection manager ?!!?

What I think is that when I'm making a new connection manager, what's really happen is a copy of the data source, is that correct ? If it is I dont't understand the avantage of making a new data source ....

Thanks for your response

SSIS Data Source Vs Connection Manager Synchronization Issue

Apr 25, 2007

I changed one data source settings in my SSIS project to use Windows Authentication instead of SQL Authentication. This data source is used to create connection managers in all SSIS packages. Soon after the data source was changed, when I opened any package using the connection manager that is based on this changed data source, I got an alert message box like the one given below showing different connection strings in data source and package connection manager. That's understandable (why can't VS 2005 do this silently or give an option to let this happen silently? that would be nice.).

Here is the problem. Even after both data source and connection manager are synchronized, still the same message box keeps on coming when ever I open any affected package (about 20 packages!). It is very annoying as you can see that old and new connection strings ARE IDENTICAL, still VS 2005 is not able to recognize this. I installed VS2005 SP1 even before I ran into this problem. I asked my friends to open this project and check the behavior on his machine. Same thing. Is this a known bug? How to fix this problem? Thanks for your help.

=====

Message box "Synchronize Connection Strings" (VS 2005 status bar shows "Performing post package load operations"):

This package contains at least one connection which is based on a datasource. The connection string for conenctions and data sources listed below are currently not identical. Connection strings of connections will be updated to reflect those on the datasource.

Resolution Of Following Error: IM010: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data Source Name Too Long

Feb 26, 2008

Hi SQL Server Team,

In order to add a data source by using ODBC Administrator, programmatically i am using SQLConfigDataSource. Thus calling SQLConfigDataSource with the fOption set to either ODBC_ADD_DSN for creating a new DSN.

Following is the stattement specified in the source code. where type_of_driver = "Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)"; and parameters contains the data source source credentials information such as DSN, UID, PSW, FIL, Description, DataDirectory,DEFAULTDIR and DBQ all separated by "".

rc = SQLConfigDataSource(NULL, ODBC_ADD_DSN, type_of_driver, parameters);

after execution of below mentioned command an error is encountered i.e -1 is returned if the DataDirectory path exceeds certain nested directories link. for eg. the file path specified below.

C:My DocumentsClients CurrentAHW Netcare BenefitsDeliverables1-5 Results Chain - system LevelAlberta NetcareBenefits Logic System Level V01.rcm

Creating a datasource with the file name i.e Benefits Logic System Level V01 every time.
rc = :: SQLConnect(hDbc, (unsigned char *)szSource, SQL_NTS, (unsigned char *)szUserName, SQL_NTS, (unsigned char *)szPassword, SQL_NTS);

Also following error message was encountered during execution of SQLConnect command.

/*szErrorMsg = 0x0012e834 "[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]General error Not enough information to connect to this DSN with SQLConnect. Use SQLDriverConnect."*/

Thus followed the instruction smentioned in the error message an dtried using SQL DriverConnect() in the following manner.
rc = :: SQLDriverConnect(hDbc, NULL,(SQLCHAR *)"DSN=RCM",SQL_NTS,outstr, sizeof(outstr),
&outstrlen,SQL_DRIVER_NOPROMPT);

Still an error is encountered but this time it returns a RETCODE of 100 whrease earlier it had returned -1.

Inform the procedure to be followed using SQLConnect when DataDirectory path is too long.

An early reply will be appreciated.

Cheers & Regards,

Saresh

Missing Data With SSAS Cube As A Report Data Source

May 9, 2006

I've got a report that is using a cube as a data source and I can't get the report to show all the data. Only data at the lowest level of the cube is displayed. The problem is that most of the data I'm concerned with is at higher levels. There's no problem with the MDX. I get the correct results when I run the query.

I'm using a table to show the results. I've also tried a matrix, but I get the same results. I'm using SSRS 2005 and SSAS 2000.

Anyone have experience with this? Am I missing something simple?

SQLDependency.Start() Permission Issue

Jul 11, 2007

Hello,

I am trying to issue SQLDependency.Start() however I get the following error message.

{"The SELECT permission was denied on the object 'databases', database 'mssqlsystemresource',

schema 'sys'."}

If I change the permission of the logged-on account (the account is using SQL Server Authentication) to sysadmin, the statement runs successfully (I have tried lower permissions but none of these were successful). If I look in the Profiler it is the following call that fails :-

select is_broker_enabled from sys.databases where database_id=db_id()

Note that the broker is enabled - it is the read of whether the broker is enabled that is failing.

Note also that I issue a SQLDependency.Stop() just before this and it (the SQLDependency.Stop()) is successful.

Do I need to :-

- impersonate a sysadmin account when the SQLDependency.Start() is issued

- make my user sysadmin (not desireable)

- is there another (lower) permission (user or object) I can grant that allows the SQLDependency.Start() to be successful (best solution)

Many thanks

Travis

Report's Data Source

Hello,

I have a rs script to modify the data source of reports that were built based on report models.

Whenever I update the report model I need to reassign the new report model as a data source.

Since I have more than 1 report model I would like my script to check which report model the report uses so I can update just the reports that use the updated report model.

What is the property or which method I call to get the data source the report use?

According to this I'll know if to relink it to the new report model.

Thank you,

Use Report Server Project To Connect To Report Model Project Data Source View?

Hello,
I've created a Report Model Project that can be used by Report Builder to generate ad-hoc reports. I'm trying to create a connection string in my Report Server Project that points to the Report Model Project data source view.

All I can do is create a regular datasource, which bypasses the metadata contained in the Data Source View.

Basically I want my Report Server Project and my Report Builder reports to leverage the same metadata. Is this possible? If so how do I get the connection string?

Report Models Data Source View

How does the report model know what data source view to use? I could not find it defined anywhere in the .smdl file.

My problem is this. I have a Report Model project with two data sources, two data source views and multiple report models. When I try and bind a data source to an entity in the report model I do not get to choose which data source view to use to choose what table/view I want to bind the entity too and only the tables in one of my DSV's shows up. When I first created it, it worked fine. It automatically selected the correct view and table and was successfully created but now when I open the project, that correlation is lost.

Any suggestions or help is appreciated, thanks.

XML Data Source To Report Model (Dec CTP SQL 2005 SP2)

Jan 29, 2007

Hi,

I've used the Dec CTP of SQL 2005 SP2 to create a Report Server Project.

In this project, I can create an XML datasource and successfully use that datasource in a report published on Sharepoint using the new Sharepoint AddIn.

I've also used Dec CTP of SQL 2005 SP2 to create a Report Model Project.

In this project I can create SQL Data Sources, DataSource Views andReport Models which I deploy to sharepoint and create a report builder based report from.

What I can't do is create an XML based datasource in a Report Model Project. Also, if I create one solution containing both types of project, the Report Model Project Data Source Wizard suggests I can create a data source based on an existing data source in my solution. What I find is that my XML data source from the Report Server Project is not listed. In fact even if I create a SQL data source in the Report Server Project that isn't available either.

Please let me know what should work now/RTM.

Thanks

Martin
