RS Execution Logs Sample Project

Jan 3, 2007

Hi,

I was going through the link http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa964131.aspx for "Monitoring Report Execution Performance with Execution Logs". There is a link (http://datainspirations.com/uploads/rsexecutionlogging.zip) proviced for downloading sample project. It seems that the page no more exists.

Can any one please let me know from where can i download the sample project?

TIA

Sample RFP For A Data Warehouse Project

Does anyone have a sample RFP for a Data Warehousing project?

My manager hired an outside consultant to draw up a proposal for our company. But it is getting stuck in details and we are way behind schedule.

It will help me greatly if there is an outline of a DW RFP.

Execution Logs

May 18, 2007

I have seen multiple articles saying that to view execution information that you must use a package to extract the data and put into tables. Isn't it possible to query against the ExecutionLog table directly? Is it not possibe to join the Catalog table to the ExecutionLog table and view the information? What is the reason for and benefits for using the package and other files?

Team Project In TFS - SSIS Project Sets Itself As The Startup Project

May 29, 2008

For some reason in a Team Foundation Team Project that has multiple project types (SSRS, SSIS, WebSite, C# Business DLL...), the SSIS project makes itself the startup project to the team project. If I explicitly set another project as the startup project to the team project and then select an SSIS package in the SSIS project in the team project, the SSIS project becomes the startup project automatically.

I am using Visual Studio 2005 SP1.

SSIS Logs Vs Custom Logs Components

Feb 12, 2007

Hi,

In my case I have to log the errors raised by any task in a package to either windows event log, text file or SQL server. Also I need to send an email notifications to a group of people telling them about the error.

Now can I use SSIS package logging for logging the errors into the required destinations. I mean right clicking on the package and selecting Logging, then adding the required log providers and enabling the events for logging into those. I think I have to upfront select the log providers to log the error, I will not have the liberty to log the error to the destination, the name of which is passed as a variable to the package. This is okay with me though.

Now what will a custom log provider help me to do in this case. Also can I somehow configure my package to call the send mail task everytime an error is raised.

Also, one more option can be developing a package that only does the error handling. It will take in the paramters or the error codes and descriptions, the destination to write to and a flag to send mail or not for that particular type of error.

What do you think? Kindly advise.

Thanks in advance for your help and time.

$wapnil

Problem In Opening The Project..Make Sure The Application For The Project Type (.dtproj) Is Installed.

Jun 24, 2007

Hi,

I have been working on some SSIS packages for a while now and today while i was working i was trying to create a new connection and in the process there was an error and it said the BIDS has to be closed and i closed it but later when i open BIDS and try to open my project(.sln) from the file menu to work on the half done package it pops up an error which shows the path to my project location on the first line and next statement on the pop up error box says:

"Make Sure the application for the project type (.dtproj) is installed."

I tried to check some forums in which some suggested to try installing SP1 which i tried but ..i dont know why but the SP1 fails to install (i dont know if its causing problem becoz i already installed SP2 as i had some other problem before for which the cure was to install SP2).

Did anyone here face such a problem before ?

I'd really appreciate if the experts here can tell a cure for this problem.

thanks,

Ravi

Visual Studio 2005 Automatically Sets SSIS Project As Startup Project

Feb 23, 2007

I have a Visual Studio 2005 solution which contains a Sql Server Integration Services (SSIS) project.

In this solution I have explicitly set a Web application project as startup project, but whenever I edit a DTS package within the SSIS project, VS automatically sets the SSIS project as startup project and the package I edit as startup object.

Needless to say, this may cause some really unwanted incidents when running the solution - thinking that you're about to run the Web application project (that was explicitly set as startup project), but instead, you run the edited package in the SSIS project.

Is there any way to avoid having the SSIS project automatically setting itself as startup project, any workaround here at all? :)

Thanks.

Can't Create A Setup Project For Project Referencing Microsoft.SqlServer.ManagedDTS

Feb 3, 2007

I have a very small project written in VB.Net 2005 using the SQL Server 2005 SSiS DTSx package.

I took a SQL Server 2000 dts package and using the SQL Server 3005 legacy tools migrated it so I could still use the package withing SQL 2005 until I can build one using BI/SSIS.

Anyway,I added the reference Microsoft.SqlServer.ManagedDTS so I could then use the Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime so I can execute the commands:

Dim oApp As New Application
Dim oPkg As New Package
oPkg = oApp.LoadPackage(g_DTSx_Directory & "AOC copy Generic1 CSV to AOC_verify_file_1.dtsx", Nothing)
Dim oResults As DTSExecResult
oResults = oPkg.Execute

Ok. That works fine. Executes without a hitch. So now I try and create a setup project for this and I use the setup wizard.

During the creation of the setup project I get a message that states:
The following files may have dependencies that cannot be determined automatically. Please confirm that all dependencies have been added to the project.
C:windowssystem32msxml6.dll

OK. The dll is part of the reference I mentioned above and I have no idea what other dependencies it may have.

How do I find this out?

Has anyone else created a project like this and experenced the same?

I am on a clean build running WinXP Pro with SP2 - VS2005 with SP1 and the SQL Server 2005 tools.

Integration Services :: Automate Process Of Creating A Project On SSISDB Based On SSIS Project Name?

Apr 20, 2015

I've got an SSIS solution file with project deployment model in VS 2013 and would like to deploy that to SSISDB on different environments. All these days I followed the regular way to create a project in SSISDB and deploy it to that. Now want to find out if i can automate this process and so got some questions

1. Can we automate the process of creating a project on SSISDB based on our SSIS project name?  This will be like when we do a deployment it should check if the project exists or not on SSISDB based on our SSIS project name, if the project exists we just deploy the packages in the project and if the project does not exists in SSISDB it will create that project and deploy the packages.

2. Can we also automate the process of creating environments? In traditional way we manually create the environment variables under environment tab of SSISDB, but can we make that also as part of deployment? Like when we are releasing to Dev server we look if that particular Dev variable exists on that server, if it exists we just update the existing stuff and if it does not exists we just create it.

COPY/PASTE From Project To Project

Jan 12, 2007

Howdy again...

Do I need to re-create a new package from scratch after doing what I did?
It seems I've made what is probably a typical newbie mistake: I used COPY/PASTE
to
consolidate containers from two packages into a single new project/package.

Now my new package generates multiple duplicate errors (23 of each...) whenever I open it:

Warning loading LoadBillingData.dtsx: Process configuration failed to set the
destination at the package path of "PackageData Flow Task to Load
Profiles, Versions, and
Transactions.EventHandlers[OnError].Variables[System::Propagate].Properties[Namespace]".
This occurs when attempting to set the destination property or variable fails.
Check the destination property or variable.

Error loading LoadBillingData.dtsx: Changing the name of a variable failed
because it is a system variable. System variables are read-only.

What happened:

new guy (goes without saying...) creates:

01. PROJECT A
02. add PACKAGE
A to PROJECT A
03. add some
containers, figger out what the heck is going on, get containers working
04. create
PROJECT B
05. create
PACKAGE B
06. add
containers, they work fine
07. whoops!
Want to consolidate the packages. Unix guy naively expects Bill has made MS
Visual Studio like all windows products (of which newbie is aware€¦):
08. create
PROJECT C
09. create
PACKAGE C
10. <ctrl
a> PACKAGE A
11. <crtl
c> PACKAGE A
12. <ctrl
v> PACKAGE C
13. <ctrl
a> PACKAGE B
14. <crtl
c> PACKAGE B
15. <ctrl
v> PACKAGE C
16. copy Flat
File Connection Managers
17. copy
Database Connection Manager
18. drag the
arrows around, fix the flat file sources, renew the column maps, etc
19. whoops! the
connections all look like a registry number! Fix the OLE DB Destinations,
Execute SQL Task containers by selecting the DB Connection Manager copied from
PROJECT A

20. successfully
execute PROJECT C/PACKAGE C
21. save all
22. exit
23. start MS
Visual Studio
24. Open
Solution
25. ERRORS!!!

Is this fixable?

Thanks,
Bill

Use Report Server Project To Connect To Report Model Project Data Source View?

Jan 17, 2008

Hello,
I've created a Report Model Project that can be used by Report Builder to generate ad-hoc reports. I'm trying to create a connection string in my Report Server Project that points to the Report Model Project data source view.

All I can do is create a regular datasource, which bypasses the metadata contained in the Data Source View.

Basically I want my Report Server Project and my Report Builder reports to leverage the same metadata. Is this possible? If so how do I get the connection string?

Thanks!!

If this is expected behavior, we have no problem limiting our statics to only completely reusable objects but would first like to know if this is expected? Is the fact that debugger doesnt show this behavior also expected?

Execution Plans &<&> Proportionate Execution Times

Dec 7, 2005

Hi I am slowly getting to grips with SQL Server. As a part of this, I have been attempting to work on producing more efficient queries. This post is regarding what appears to be a discrepancy between the SQL Server execution plan and the actual time taken by a query to run. My brief is to produce an attendance system for an education establishment (I presume you know I'm not an A-Level student completing a project :p ). Circa 1.5m rows per annum, testing with ~3m rows currently. College_Year could strictly be inferred from the AttDateTime however it is included as a field because it a part of just about every PK this table is ever likely to be linked to. Indexes are not fully optimised yet. Table:CREATE TABLE [dbo].[AttendanceDets] ([College_Year] [smallint] NOT NULL ,[Group_Code] [char] (12) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ,[Student_ID] [char] (8) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ,[Session_Date] [datetime] NOT NULL ,[Start_Time] [datetime] NOT NULL ,[Att_Code] [char] (1) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ) ON [PRIMARY]GO CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX [IX_AltPK_Clust_AttendanceDets] ON [dbo].[AttendanceDets]([College_Year], [Group_Code], [Student_ID], [Session_Date], [Att_Code]) ON [PRIMARY]GO CREATE INDEX [All] ON [dbo].[AttendanceDets]([College_Year], [Group_Code], [Student_ID], [Session_Date], [Start_Time], [Att_Code]) ON [PRIMARY]GO CREATE INDEX [IX_AttendanceDets] ON [dbo].[AttendanceDets]([Att_Code]) ON [PRIMARY]GOALL inserts are via an overnight sproc - data comes from a third party system. Group_Code is 12 chars (no more no less), student_ID 8 chars (no more no less). I have created a simple sproc. I am using this as a benchmark against which I am testing my options. I appreciate that this sproc is an inefficient jack of all trades - it has been designed as such so I can compare its performance to more specific sprocs and possibly some dynamic SQL. Sproc:CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[CAMsp_Att] @College_Year AS SmallInt,@Student_ID AS VarChar(8) = '________', @Group_Code AS VarChar(12) = '____________', @Start_Date AS DateTime = '1950/01/01', @End_Date as DateTime = '2020/01/01', @Att_Code AS VarChar(1) = '_' AS IF @Start_Date = '1950/01/01'SET @Start_Date = CAST(CAST(@College_Year AS Char(4)) + '/08/31' AS DateTime) IF @End_Date = '2020/01/01'SET @End_Date = CAST(CAST(@College_Year +1 AS Char(4)) + '/07/31' AS DateTime) SELECT College_Year, Group_Code, Student_ID, Session_Date, Start_Time, Att_Code FROM dbo.AttendanceDets WHERE College_Year = @College_YearAND Group_Code LIKE @Group_CodeAND Student_ID LIKE @Student_IDAND Session_Date <= @End_DateAND Session_Date >=@Start_DateAND Att_Code LIKE @Att_CodeGOMy confusion lies with running the below script with Show Execution Plan:--SET SHOWPLAN_TEXT ON--Go DECLARE @Time as DateTime Set @Time = GetDate() select College_Year, group_code, Student_ID, Session_Date, Start_Time, Att_Code from attendanceDetswhere College_Year = 2005 AND group_code LIKE '____________' AND Student_ID LIKE '________'AND Session_Date <= '2005-11-16' AND Session_Date >= '2005-11-16' AND Att_Code LIKE '_' Print 'First query took: ' + CAST(DATEDIFF(ms, @Time, GETDATE()) AS VarCHar(5)) + ' milli-Seconds' Set @Time = GetDate() EXEC CAMsp_Att @College_Year = 2005, @Start_Date = '2005-11-16', @End_Date = '2005-11-16' Print 'Second query took: ' + CAST(DATEDIFF(ms, @Time, GETDATE()) AS VarCHar(5)) + ' milli-Seconds'GO --SET SHOWPLAN_TEXT OFF--GOThe execution plan for the first query appears miles more costly than the sproc yet it is effectively the same query with no parameters. However, my understanding is the cached plan substitutes literals for parameters anyway. In any case - the first query cost is listed as 99.52% of the batch, the sproc 0.48% (comparing the IO, cpu costs etc support this). BUT the text output is:(10639 row(s) affected) First query took: 596 milli-Seconds (10639 row(s) affected) Second query took: 2856 milli-SecondsI appreciate that logical and physical performance are not one and the same but can why is there such a huge discrepancy between the two? They are tested on a dedicated test server, and repeated running and switching the order of the queries elicits the same results. Sample data can be provided if requested but I assumed it would not shed much light. BTW - I know that additional indexes can bring the plans and execution time closer together - my question is more about the concept. If you've made it this far - many thanks. If you can enlighten me - infinite thanks.

Execution In Scheduled Job Vs Direct Execution

Nov 29, 2004

Here's my case, I have written a stored procedure which will perform the following:
1. Grab data from a table using cursor,
2. Process data,
3. Write the result into another table

If I execute the stored procedure directly (thru VS.NET, or Query Analyser), it will run, but when I tried to execute it via a scheduled job, it fails.

I used the same record, same parameters, and the same statements to call the stored procedure.

Any idea?

SQL Sample?

Feb 5, 2006

Hi!

This concerns SQL errors showing up unexpectedly and a "Sample" application.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 on a Dell 8600 Laptop. It is the only computer I own (or want to own) therefore, home networking not an option. A simple, stand alone computer is all I need or want, yet sometime around September or October '05 whenever I booted up, I was getting SQL error messages (e.g., missing SQLsvc file). While trying to find the problem, I was seeing indications in various places that Windows NT was my OS (what happened to Windows XP as my OS?). I'm not sure how all that happened, I certainly did not intend to make any such change.

I'm not a computer techy, nor do I have such an aspiration. However, I'm quickly discovering that in order to use a computer in any capacity, one must indeed become somewhat of a techy - like it or not!

So, I got rid of the SQL error messages from popping up at bootup and things seemed to be a bit more normal, but now (for the past 2 or 3 months), everytime I shut down, I get the pop up window that indicates a program is not ending properly and I have the option to "end now" or "cancel" to return to windows. The name in the title box of this popup is simply "Sample" -- no extension such as .exe (although I assume that's what it should be). I have no clue what this is and have searched every possible source to find the answer but to no avail. I suspect it has something to do with that blasted SQL thing that seemed to take over my computer. I searched the web for "sample.exe" and found that it may be a virus

"Virus Alert: W32.Nimda.E@mm
The attachment received has been changed to: Sample.exe ... Emails itself out as Sample.exe Shared drives: Infects open network shares."

After reading the above link, I checked and, sure enough, I have this "W32nimda" file. A search as to how to eliminate it, led me to the Symantec website, which has a removal tool to download, along with 7 pages of instructions (did I mention that I did NOT want to be a computer techy?). I used Symantec antivirus 2 years ago and was glad to be rid of it, however getting completely rid of it seems to be another story and I truly wish I knew the secret to that (any hints?). I did not download this tool yet and not sure if I want to. Surely, there's an easier way! I have run my antivirus software (Trend Micro PC-Cillin), which finds nothing.

I seem to be getting away from the subject, although it all seems related, so I'll get back to the SQL question(s) which is, do I need it? If not, how can I get rid of it? Probably more information is required to answer this question such as how I use the computer, what applications, etc. Briefly, I do not create web pages and do not have a web page; no home network; do not play games or download music (afraid of that!); don't visit "taboo" websites. I do not have MS Word or any of the MS office line - Word Perfect 12 is my word processor. In November last year (at the same time all this started) my modem ceased to function, which I attributed to, unknowingly, plugging into a digital telephone jack at my office. I bought and installed another modem - which I could not get to work - took it back and bought wireless modem and router, which I installed and setup myself (with telephone assistance from router manufacturer, Linksys).

My web related usage is mainly research and email (a necessary evil, apparently). I also use the computer for photo storage and enhancement, graphics and Windows Media Player 9.

I apologize for this post being so lengthy, but I wanted to explain the problem with enough detail in the hope of getting a substantially beneficial answer (other attempts at other sites have been answered basically with "I dunno!" - and here's a surprise, I got the same "I dunno" from The Geek Squad at Best Buy!).

Thanks for taking the time to read all this - hope you can help!

SCD Sample Example

Jan 10, 2006

Hello All,

I have two tables

SCDTest1

id          stdt                    enddt                 price

1           01/04/2006      09/09/9999       900

2           01/04/2006      09/09/9999        200

and

SCDTest2

id          stdt                    enddt                 price

1           01/04/2006      09/09/9999       100

I want to create a package that will:

check to see if id and stdt from SCDTest1 exists in SCDTest2,

if yes, I would like to expire that row in SCDTest2 (change the enddt to today) and then insert a new record into SCDTest2 with stdt = today and enddt = 09/09/9999.

If no then I want to insert the row with stdt = today, enddt = 09/09/9999.

SCDTest2 will look like this after the run is complete.

SCDTest2

id          stdt                    enddt                 price

1           01/04/2006       01/10/2006       100

1           01/10/2006       09/09/9999       900

2           01/04/2006      09/09/9999        200

I have come close by using the SCD wizard, but have been unable to figure out how to get the proper date updates to occur.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
