I am using sql server 2000 to create a test database. I have two tables, a table for questions and one for answers. I want to create random orders for the test questions and answers. I tried to use the rand function but that doesn’t seem to work, because when I order by the random number, the questions are still in the primary key order. My primary key is 'questioned'. Can someone help me out on how to randomly order my questions and ansers?

Hi,I need to extract randomly 5 records from the table "Questions". Now I useSELECT TOP 5 FROM Questions ORDERBY NEWID()And it works. The problem is that I need an additional thing: if SQLextracts record with ID=4, then it should not extract record with ID=9,because they are similar. I mean, I'd like something to tell SQL that if itextracts some questions, then it SHOULD NOT extract other ones.How can I do it?Thanks!Luke

I am seeing an unusual pop up when I try to hit the Website directory. I have setup replication setup for mobile units on IIS 6.0. When I try to hit the - http://defaultwebsite/test/sqlcesa30.dll - it tells me to open, save for cancel the sqlcesa30.dll file. This is weird. I have not seen this before.
When I hit the path from a internet browser - http://defaultwebsite/test/sqlcesa30.dll - it should come back with something like SQL Mobile Agent 3.0.
If we use: select * from ..... , normally, it will return an ordered result ( may be order by ID ), but how can we make an random order select statement. It mean every time we run the query, the result will be different from the other ?
Hi, I need to select few items from sql database.I know for ORDER BY, but I need those items to be mixed in random order every time when they are returned from database. Those are the same items every time, just randomly mixed. Can i do it with SQL, or I have to find another way (e.g. to mix them after sql returns them)?
I need to select records by random order everytime user go to that page. QuestionID is the uniq field in this table.

how would i make the columns appear in the above order when displaying as it is default alphetically sorted...I have tried putting numbers at the front which work till I get to the number 10 which alphetically sorted is next to 1 not 9? is there a better way off sorting matrix column which have no specific criteria to sort from?
I'm importing comma-delimited text files into a SQL table. The data imports in a seemingly random order. One time I import and the lines appear one way and the next time I import they import another way.
Is there a way to force the text files to import in the same order the data is found in the file?
We are setting up a test lab environment with 100 machines. Â We want one master testing db that gets replicated to each to run scripted application tests nightly. Â
My goal is to minimize the amount of work to move this thing to each of the 100 test machines. Â I am wondering if we need to even have the sql local and invest in a monster db server with 100 copies of the db we restore and each test machine point to their own db on that server, or if I should use db mirroring or something to get the master test db to each of those machines instead.
I'm using ASP and SQL Serv 2000. What I need to get from 2 tables (company & customers) is random 10 customers from random 20 comp. Anyone got an idea how to do this??? I've spent 2 days trying to get stored proc. or T-SQL to work, but nothing good came out of it. I can get 1 comp and 10 cust, but not a grouped list of 20 comp. w/ 10 cust. each.
Now that we have a good programming model in SSIS - the question is whether to write automated unit tests for your packages, and would it generally be a good idea for packages?

hi every one, i need to test SSIS pacakge which will import data from different database where record count is around 5 millions. iam planning to test it through c# code as well as manually also. SSIS source : consist of 7 tables SSIS destination :consist of 7 tables Using c# code iam trying to run ssis package through batch file. i am putting expected rowcount, column count in an excel file and comparing same with destination tables by writing query implementing ADO.Net concept. am i going right way ,can any one suggest best and productive way to test the ssis package . what are the other things i need to test it. do any one can add test cases to it.

In SQL sERVER 2008, I have two fields - Depatment and Employees. I need to sort the result set by employee number ascending order, with following exception
1)when department number = 50 - the preferred order is Employee # - 573 followed by 551-572 (employee # belong to Dept 50 = 551-573)
2)When Department number = 20 – the preferred sort order is Employee # 213-220, followed by Employee # 201-213 (employee # belong to Dept 20 = 201-220)
I never paid much attention to this before but I noticed this today in a new table I was creating.
For tables defined in the tabular model the table properties have something like SELECT Blah FROM TableName ORDER BY Blah Then in the tabular model the table's data is in the same order it was ordered by in the data source for the table.
I have a date table I setup and I noticed it is NOT respecting the sort order.
I have it sorted by DateID which sorts with the oldest date first and newest date as last row.However, the table that is imported and stored in the data model is not in that order.
I can of course manually sort the rows in BIDS/DataTools, but I find this discrepancy odd.
Would this have negative impacts on the EARLIER function for example if the data rows are not in the order specified?

According to this result, user see the first 5 records with id 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 in page 1, but when he tries to view page 2, he still see the records with id 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. This is not correct for users. :eek:
Of course we can add order by aid also, but there are tons of sqls like this, we can't update our application in one shot.
So I ask for your advice here, is there any settings can tell the db use default sort order when the order by column value are the same? Or is there any other solution to resolve this problem in one shot?

I have created view by jaoining two table and have order by clause.
The sql generated is as follows

If I run sql the results are displayed in proper order but the view only order by first item in order by clause.

Lets say I have a table named [Leadership] and I want to select the field 'leadershipName' from the [Leadership] Table.
My query would look something like this:

Now, I would like to order the results of this query... but I don't want to simply order them by ASC or DESC. Instead, I need to order them as follows:
Executive Board Members, Delegates, Grievance Chairs, and Negotiators
My question: Can this be done through MS SQL or do I need to add a field to my [Leadership] table named 'leadershipImportance' or something as an integer to denote the level of importance of the position so that I can order on that value ASC or DESC?

What would be the aueries for this. Using the following i get: 1,2,3,6,7,10,11,12,13,4,5,8,9 (interesting and potentially useful) but I would like to be able to experiment with the aforementioned orders as well.
