Tiff File Corrupted After Reading From Blob Column

Apr 11, 2006

I use this code to get Tiff files from db , but output file seems to be corrupted :
Dim pubsConn As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection("Server=(local);uid=sa2;pwd=sony;database=pubs;")        Dim logoCMD As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("SELECT pub_id, logo FROM pub_info", pubsConn)
Dim fs As FileStream                 ' Writes the BLOB to a file (*.bmp).        Dim bw As BinaryWriter               ' Streams the binary data to the FileStream object.
Dim bufferSize As Integer = 100      ' The size of the BLOB buffer.        Dim outbyte(bufferSize - 1) As Byte  ' The BLOB byte() buffer to be filled by GetBytes.        Dim retval As Long                   ' The bytes returned from GetBytes.        Dim startIndex As Long = 0           ' The starting position in the BLOB output.
Dim pub_id As String = ""            ' The publisher id to use in the file name.
' Open the connection and read data into the DataReader.        pubsConn.Open()        Dim myReader As SqlDataReader = logoCMD.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.SequentialAccess)
Do While myReader.Read()            ' Get the publisher id, which must occur before getting the logo.            pub_id = myReader.GetString(0)                        ' Create a file to hold the output.            fs = New FileStream("\Server1shared1logo" & "KK" & ".tiff", FileMode.OpenOrCreate, FileAccess.Write)            bw = New BinaryWriter(fs)
' Reset the starting byte for a new BLOB.            startIndex = 0
' Read bytes into outbyte() and retain the number of bytes returned.            retval = myReader.GetBytes(1, startIndex, outbyte, 0, bufferSize)
' Continue reading and writing while there are bytes beyond the size of the buffer.            Do While retval = bufferSize                bw.Write(outbyte)                bw.Flush()
' Reposition the start index to the end of the last buffer and fill the buffer.                startIndex += bufferSize                retval = myReader.GetBytes(1, startIndex, outbyte, 0, bufferSize)            Loop

Transact SQL :: Reading Text From BLOB / Varbinary Objects

Aug 26, 2015

We have an interface where we receive data from an external supplier. One of the fields in the interface is of type BLOB (the source is an Oracle database), which would be read into our MSSQL database as image. This can also be converted to varbinary, and a typical field value looks something like:

0x70697A5F8F000000789C0DCCBD0DC2301....etc. etc.

However, we know that the origin only contains text, and we even know the text from the GUI they supply us with. The text could typically be "Delayed by 3 minutes because of water damage" or something like that.

What I want to do, is to extract that text from the field.

First, I have stored the incoming data stream in a table, where one column is of type varbinary(max). It looks like this goes swell. But I don't know which command to use in order to get the text extracted.

I have tried these:

1) select master.dbo.fn_varbintohexstr(Myfield) from Mytable
-> Returns just the text "0x70697A5F8...." which I have no interest in

2) select cast(Myfield as varchar(max)) from Mytable
-> Returns just Chinese signs.

3) select cast(Myfield as nvarchar(max)) from Mytable
-> Returns just Chinese signs.

4) declare @ptrval varbinary(16)
select @ptrval = TEXTPTR(MyField) from MyTable   -- with MyField defined as image
READTEXT MyTable.MyField @ptrval 1 30
-> Returns just the text "0x697A5F8...." which I have no interest in

Of course, since only text is stored in this field, the field should never have been defined as BLOB in the first place. But the source system is external, and it's a standard system, so we may not alter it in any way.

Saving BLOB Into SQL Server CE Database

Apr 8, 2008

Hi all,

I have a replicated table with a column which is used to store sound files - it is of type varbinary(MAX).

What is the best way to store a file from the filesystem inside this column on the PDA side (i.e. inside SQL Server CE) without loading the whole file into the PDA's memory, i.e. using some sort of buffering?

On full SQL Server 2005 I make use of UPDATE.WRITE() to save buffers inside the column - is there an alternative to this on SQL Server CE? Can anyone provide sample code / point me to samples that deal with SQL Server CE & BLOBs.

Thanks for your help!

Extract File From Database (Stored In BLOB Format)

Oct 22, 2013

I would like to extract a file from a database. The file is stored in a BLOB format

Can I extract the BLOB file from the database using an SQL code/command or is there another way in which I can extract the file?

The file is stored as a BLOB but is actually a ZIP file (if that makes any difference)

What is the normal method of extracting a BLOB file?

DB Design :: Is File Stream Or Blob Best For Small Database With Word And Other Docs

Aug 15, 2015

I was putting a database together (its a C# application MSSQL)  the application will handle a few hundred customers records and save  maybe a couple of thousand  word docs/images/other doc files wondered if the way to go was blob or filestream, I see the medium and larger databases seem to go for filestream but just wondered as not much mentioned about smaller dbs.I do not think  security/disk space/super fast access  will be a big issue.

To BLOB Or Not To BLOB, That Is The Question.

Aug 1, 2006

We are debating what is industry “best practice for serving huge numbers of images in an industrial scale website. More directly, which approach produces the best performance and the best scalability? For example, how do sites like ebay, Amazon, and other large sites handle the millions or billions of images they must deal with?

Store as BLOB in sql server?

Store in /images folder and store url text into sql server?

We always assumed that the second approach is what most sites must do. But do they?

One developer on our team maintains that storing one million or more image files in a directory will most certainly result in poor performance, because the server must scan the directory, searching for the correct file, each time a web request is made. The directory is not indexed (?) so performance must eventually suffer.

Other developer counters that storing millions of images as BLOBs into sql server will result in poor performance and HUGE database. An additional layer of access (webserver to sql server, back to webserver, then to client) causes a delay and performance hit.
Who is right? What do the gurus as the world class sites do?

Retrieve BLOB From SQL Server

Jun 13, 2007

I have a table in a SQL Server database that contains a field(data type image) that contains a text file.  I'm trying to retrieve this file and save it onto the hard drive.  I'm using the code below, but get I get the error 'Arguments are of the wrong type, are out of acceptable range, or are in conflict with one another.' at line 11.  This code worked fine when I tested it on the pubs database and exporting the logo field out of pub_info.  I'm not quite sure why this doesn't work for my database.  Can anyone see where I'm going wrong?
1         Dim cn As ADODB.Connection2         Dim rs As ADODB.Recordset3         Dim mstream As ADODB.Stream

Connecting To And Reading Data From A SQL Database

Jul 25, 2006

Hi Everyone,
I am looking for some help, as i am pulling my hair out looking for information.
I have been using asp for many years and am now starting to learn .net. so far so good....
I am now wanted to connect to a database, execute a simple select statement and then read/write the information out. I can't help but think in old asp code and i am having a hard time finding what i need to perfom this simple task.
I have used the grid controls etc, and these are very good - however, i need to connect to a database in the code-behind file and perfom various functions in the background.
If any of you could be so kind as to perhaps show me some demo code i would be grateful.
I would like to do:
A) Connect to a database (sql server 2000)B) Execute a simple SQL select statementC) Read the returned informationD) put this information into variables used elsewhereE) how do you check if no records are returned? such as the .EOF in asp?
Many thanks

Reading/Writing Data From A SQL Database

Feb 14, 2008

Hi,
I have a data structure called 'Quote' which contains a number of different variables and controls ranging from text boxes, check boxes and radio buttons, i need to be able to read and write this from a database.

First I think a description of my overall project is needed:

Project Description
I have been given a brief that basically says: i have to create a programmed solution in VB to solve a problem. This problem can be anything we like, and I personally have chosen to create a program that manages quotes for building Log Cabins (this is very contrived and far from anything someone would do in the real world).

My solution will allow a generic user to create a quote (using a form with controls such as text boxes, check boxes, radio buttons) , and then save this to file. These users may then wish to load/edit this quote at a later date, from another form.

Whilst completing this project, i'll only have up to about 5 records (quotes) within the system, so i dont need the ability to store hundreds of records. And each record will be relatively short, with only about 10-15 data items within the data structure.

Also the Admin (or business owner in this case) need to be able to view all saved quotes in a presentable format, and edit them if needs be, from within this same program.

This solution does not need to be absolutely perfect and 100% efficiently coded, or have all the bells and whistles a real-world program would have. This is for an A level computing project by the way.

So basically, i need to be able to read from the database (to populate a Data Grid (i imagine this is best way?)) and so Admin can access any quote and edit it (editing is not vital, but viewing/printing is. Maybe i should stop at just viewing any quote?). Also i need generic users to be able to fill in the Edit Quote form and then save this data into the database.

And is a data structure really required for me to use a database?

I've never used databases in VB before (but have used them elsewhere, mainly Access) and so am completely new to this. Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks

Reading Data From A String Into A SQL Database

If Someone will please be able to give me a rough idea of how i could accomplish this with some sample code, then i will be greatful, i'm new to C#, but here is my code that i have so far.

//This is the Connection that i have made and where i am currently stuck, i dunno how to go further. Any help will be welcome.

Is there a system stored proc or any utility that can be fired off from the sp, using xp_cmdshell that will take a file path from the filesystem and load it into a blob column in a database table.

I have worked with blob fields in the past but in those instances I loaded the blobs into the database from front end ADO.net code. This time around I need to pull this off stricktly from a stored proc.

Any help will be appreciated.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Re-balancing Blob And Lob Data In Multiple Files On Primary File Group

May 7, 2014

A little background on what I am trying to achieve first. We are moving to Azure virtual machines and we will have 8 disks on the SQL Server box. I am adding more files to the primary file group and each file will go on its own drive. I am then rebalancing data across these files by rebuilding all of the indexes on the tables which is working fine. No problems so far all is good.

I now have an additional problem. If there is a lob or blob column on the table, rebuilding the clustered index and all the non clustered indexes doesn't rebalance the blob or lob data across the disks such as it does with in row data.

I cannot find any articles on rebalancing lob or blob data because all the articles say to move to a new file group. I do not want a new file group, I just want to use the primary file group where the data already resides, and just redistribute it evenly in the same way that I can in row data which is working fine.

One solution I thought about was to BCP data out of the table, truncate the table and then BCP back into the table which I imagine would have the desired effect of distributing the data evenly over the files.

Question On Reading From SQL SERVER

Apr 21, 2004

ok I use a datareader..Perhaps not the best method..but...if a better one exsits please let me know...
The problem...
I get info on a user....It returns an unknown amount of rows back....lets say two for instance....

ok...
How do I tell the number of rows....also the ability to reference each row and items in that row....
..
i.e. Row contains this

uname | password | address | Phone | notes

Like I said could contain multiple rows
I need to figure out info for specific rows and items in it....
in datareader I know you can reference each item which I guess you could use x number of variables to get each item in the row but that is tedious....
IS there a better answer????

Reading Images From SQL Server

May 14, 2004

Hi
I am using the following example for reading images.

But, I want to attach the image to independent ASP.NET image control. Not in a datagrid.

Any ideas on how to do that? Please explain.

Thanks

P.
