Realtime Mirroring Of Database For Reporting And Analysis?
Jul 26, 2007
Hi,
I have a requirement to mirror our production database (or part/derivative of it). It is imperative that the mirrored database maintains a live copy of the production data. The data is financial data, so analysis of it requires latest prices, exchange rates etc.
One product I have looked at, and am very impressed with so far is DataMirror (www.datamirror.com). I have no idea of its price yet, as I'm waiting for a rep to contact me. In the meantime, does anyone have experience in this field with alternative products? Is there a free product that I should be looking at?
I am using MS SQL Server 2005.
Thanks in advance

Server A = primary SQL DBs (mirroring origination)
Server B = failover SQL DBs (mirroring destination)
For database mirroring a witness is required.
Can the witness live in another instance of SQL on server B?

Using SQL Server 2008, we would like propose mirroring between two servers of a critical database. Since we initiate, may require to clarify on its purpose and also required changes from application end.Any changes required from OS Level? (I believe both servers IP or Host name should be added in host entries. Mirroring ports should be allowed/open including Principal and mirror server IP Addresses): Windows Team.Any changes required from Application? (Instance name, authentication: user name and its password should be added in web config files): Application Team.Any changes required from Network Team? Also for mirroring both the principal and mirror servers should be with same version, does it only mean SQL Server 2008 versions are enough or does it also mean to say build numbers 10.00.4000 should also be same.URL....

Hello,
In our project, we would like to use the same data source for our analysis service database cubes and for our reporting service reports.
I created the analysis service project first, deployed successfully. When trying to setting up the data source in the report model project, I selected the "create a data source based on another object", and then selected the "create a data source based on an analysis service project". However, there is no analysis service project to select, and no browse button to see where the reporting service is looking for analysis service project either.
I have tried creating a new analysis service project with data source views, cubes, dimensions and all the stuff, but still cannot see the analysis service project in the drop down box to be selected for my reporting model project data source.
As I am fairly new to the reporting service, I'm sure I'm missing something, but couldn't find much information in the help or on the web. Any suggestion would be much appreciated.
Thank you very much,
Annie

Is there a way to copy a table schema into a new table rather than having to generate a create table script? For example, I have table dbo.MyTable and I want to copy the schema to newuser.MyTable without a script? I know you can restore into a new database from an existing database so maybe you can do this?thanks-c

Is SSIS a tool for extracting realtime data from staging to data warehouse? Realtime in my case can be loading every 15 minutes but no more than 30 minutes. I've a data warehouse which data refresh once a day and it worked fine. The data that I extract into the warehouse is from a Staging database which is realtime replication of multiple production databases. Once a day, I've to have replication pauses on staging for a couple hours to refresh the data warehouse. That's the only way so SSIS can pull the data correctly; if I've replication on while SSIS pull data, it will always copy less rows than it supposed to.
I cannot afford to have replication pauses every 15 minutes just so I can refresh data warehouse. Does anyone every have this problem? or any best practice how to do this?
Thanks,
-Ash

Firstly I am not a programmer; and this is the first time I have used this forum
I am working with some friends who have been assisting.
I am developing a product that is importing data into a sequel data base, and the data is being recorded in real time but posted at minute intervals. The data is then being exported to a local flat file again at minute intervals each row containing about 50 columns.
Currently the whole file is being imported across the internet and it all works fine. I am using analysis services to look at the data every two minutes. As the file grows this time becomes longer. What I want to do is only import the latter portion of the flat file, say the last 144 rows there are 1440 rows per day.
What is the most efficient way to do this? Duplicated records would be a disaster.
Ideally the number of rows to be collected would be variable not fixed at 1440, these rows would be added to the main table that will probably contain up to 1 years worth of data i.e. 1440 rows * 365 days with approx 50 columns.
Any comments to point me in the right direction would be appreciated.

Hi,
Using SSIS, I am successfully importing data from excel files into a table in sql server 2005.
These excel files are ALWAYS open and are being updated from external sources i.e. third party tools.
After doing alot of investigations, I have reached the conclusions as follows:
When the excel files are NOT being updated, then the ssis package works
BUT when the excel files are being updated, then the ssis package does not work. The error is:
[Excel Source [749]] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_CANNOTACQUIRECONNECTIONFROMCONNECTIONMANAGER. The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "Excel Connection Manager" failed with error code 0xC0202009. There may be error messages posted before this with more information on why the AcquireConnection method call failed.
Please note that the excel files MUST be open so that they get updated by the third party tool.
AND, every few minutes i.e. 5 mins, my ssis package should import these excel files.
Question:
How is it possible to load the excel data while it is being updated by external third party.
Thanks

Ther eis an excel file.
This file is open all the time so the excel sheets get populated by an external third party application real time.
So the data inside the spreadsheets are constantly changing. This spreadsheet is only capable of being updated with data when it is open.
And I would like to import this excel data on a certain interval into sql server 2005.
Tried using the import wizard but it seems the import does not work if the source i.e. the excel file is open.
Is there an alternative please?
Thanks

Here's a little sql 2005 script I wrote:
1. Start by running this script....
declare @x int
select @x = 1
while ( @x < 75000)
begin
insert into myTesttable values (@x)
Select @x = @x + 1
end
2. While the script is still running, I want to know how many records are in the table. From the same query window as the script, I have run both of the following statements.
select count(*) from mytesttable
witn (nolock)
select count(*) from mytesttable
witn (tablock)
Instead of getting the answer immediately, they run only after the original script has completed. They seem to be "blocked". How can I get a near realtime count of the number of records in this table while the script populates the table?
Thanks,

I have a product where we feed an SQL 7 DB data collected from Manufacturing. Presently, the Data transport Program is in charge of getting prepared data from machines and inserting into the DB. This design assumes SQL7 is always ready and able - which is not true due to customer queries or backups or etc. consuming resources. There is a low level buffer in system at manufacturing level if transport dies, but transport is ignorant of SQL distress, so keeps hammering DB's frontdoor. I'm looking for help in putting SQL server in charge of allowing data in - when resources are adequate. Seems I need a function that can determine server stress QUICKLY to forestall transport program and a buffer for records at the transport layer. Anyone know / done a system where SQL server CHECKS for waiting records or OK's an external program to send until told to stop? What indicates (reliably) low server resources? Anyone ever used MSMQ?

I have just finished configuring my first test mirrored environment (High safety mode). I setup the database engine service accounts on each of the servers with domainuser. I inherited a production mirrored environment set up by someone else. On the production servers the database engine service account is NT Authorityuser a local account. I am trying to practice installing Windows updates within a mirrored environment and I not sure how to proceed when the service account is NT Authority user account. should I change the service account to a domainuser?

Hello
Are both reporting and analysis services of SQL Server are same or different. I mean if I install reporting services so analysis services is a part of it or do I need to install it separately?
I am asking because when I tried to install Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2005 it said that I do not have SQL Server 9 Analysis Services installed which is a prerequisite but I do remember that I have installed SQL Server reporting services on the system. So it means Analysis Services has to be installed separately from a different CD?

I get this error message:
The database is being closed before database mirroring is fully initialized. The ALTER DATABASE command failed.
What does that mean, and how do I fix it?

We're looking at several tools to do reporting and analysis of our SQL 2005 data.
We want to create canned web based reports
We want internal - non-developers to create canned reports for our customers
We want internal - non-developers to create ad hoc reports
We want to slice and dice the data in various way and produce graphs and trend reports - pretty stuff for management
Tools like Business Objects Edge satisfy many of these requirements but we already have SQL 2005 which I understand can do similar things. I can easily get a demo of a companys products to show me what can and can't be done.
Does anyone know how I can get a SQL demo using these services ? I tried contacting Microsoft but didn't get anywhere
I don't have the luxury of time to learn all the benefits and functionality to understand if SQL is the best way to go. Database wise - yes - but Analysis and Reporting ??
Thanks

Is it possible to use SSIS to synchronize the data between a Foxpro .dbf and a compatible SQL Server table on a near realtime basis?
I have succesfully created an SSIS package that will insert data into the SQL Server Table but this is only useful for migrating data. What I need is a way to insure that the data in the SQL Server table matches that in the .dbf on a near realtime basis.
Or is there a way to link from SQL Server to the .dbf (similar to an Oracle DBLink).
Thanks for any and all assistance.....

Hi,
I have a cube with the following
DimStartDate
DimEndDate
DimArea
FactDataCount
I need to output the following report
Area 5days 10days 30days
Miami 4 2 1
Memphis 3 3 2
1)Where do I do the dateDiff calculation, at report or cube level?
2)How do I work out which dates belong to the above groups? I'm assuming i have to check if the dateDiff lies between those numbers?
thanks

I set up a new mirror server. Everything is good except that the Database Mirroring Monitor is not working for one of the databases. In the monitor the principal data is showing up as blank
If I look at dbm_monitor_data on the principal most of the data columns (e.g. Send_queue_size) are null where as they have data for the other databases.
Both servers are SQL Server 9.0.2047 Enterprise Edition.
Any idea what might be going on here?
Thanks in advance.

G'day,
I've got a software development PC that was running SQL 2000 + Analysis Services + Reporting Service (sp4 from memory). I then installed SQL Express 2005 and later then SQL 2005 Standard (dev) + Analysis + Reporting and upgraded to Sp2 last month.
To help improve the performance of this poor little PC, I've gone to Control Panel and uninstalled SQL 2000 service. I've also used the SQL 2005 Surface area configuration tool to switch off the SQL Express instance from running. Practically, I probably should remove the $SQLExpress instance.
The problem I'm faced with is the SQL 2000 Analysis and SQL 2000 Reporting service is still registered as Windows Services and showing the the SQL Server Configuration Manager (2005), but there is no uninstall option in the control pannel. So I can't work out how to uninstall these software and services.
It is also apparent that there are a series of "files" in the C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server80* directory like ..ToolsDevToolssamples*.* directory and others that shouldn't really be there if I've uninstalled SQL 2000 via the control panel.
Is there a SQL 2000 cleanup or removal tool that will help remove these old services and files?
Does anyone have some suggestions on how to cleanup my development PC without the full operating system installation?

trivial example, i have a tabular model for orderlines. Each line has a product.A product fits under a hierarchy Category > Product.I need to display the top N rows by quantity under each category. My can break down as follows: Warehouse, Product category, Product, PurchaserID
If im to do the top N in excel i use pivot table functions to get the top N by whatever measure i pick from the dropdown:I cant do this in powerbi builder though, as it works very differently, or powerview which again is done differently.Do i have to take a different approach depending on the report platform, or is there a way to do this in the tabular model that will work on any platform?

Hi All,
Couple of questions about database mirroing.
1. Once the mirroring is setup is it possible to switch between high-protection and high-performance modes? If it is will I have to stop the mirroring, switch the modes and then restart it again?
2. Let's say the principal server went down and I manually failed over to the mirror server. Mirror server runs as a new principal server for a couple of days and then I bring the original principal server back up. What needs to be done in order to bring transactions on the principal server up to date?
Thanks.

we want to migrate our production server , without taking the database down.so what we did was , we mirrored the databases from production to one of our development servers and we took the prodcution server for uprgrade.
so today we are moving back (mirroring) all the databases from that development server to our new production server.
my question is , when i move
productionserver_old(principal server) - having the script for principal server
development server(mirror server---->principalserver)) - having the script for mirror server , which is now acting as principal server
new production server(mirror server) - having the script for mirror server. will become principal server , once i moved all the databases
now while mirroring between the developement server and the new production server, i have to run the scripts for the mirror server only.
so both the servers are havign the mirror script now...
is that a problem, or any other way i can handle this....
