Recommended Setup For NIC Heartbeats / Mirroring Traffic

Jun 6, 2007

Would anyone have a suggestion on how to setup a partner to partner NIC configuration for heartbeats/mirroring traffic? I've been told this is the recommended setup but have not found much on how to do it. We currently have a teamed NIC config for redundancy, but would like to have a separate set of NICs on each partner so that mirroring traffic is not interrupted by any regular network traffic.

We also have a witness running in full safety mode. Does this mean partnerA and partner B both need NICs with a crossover cable between them AND is it recommended for the witness to also have extra NICs to both partnerA and partnerB (w/ crossover cables)?

Any suggestions/help/links on properly configuring this would be appreciated.

Mirroring Dedicated Traffic

Oct 27, 2006

We are using the following configuration:

2 stand alone Windows 2003 servers 64 bit.

Each have two Gig Network cards configured with different IP addresses.

Each running multiple instances of SQL Server 64.

I am trying to set up a mirror where mirroring traffic between servers will be dedicated to a secondary IP address on the second NIC.

I am also trying to avoid Windows authentication.

Interesting enough: Security Configuration screen suggesting you to use fully qualified TCP addresses and, at the same time, does not give you such an option...

Would someone please point me in the right direction?

Thank you.

Database Mirroring, Client Connections All ODBC So What Methods Are Recommended?

Jun 5, 2006

As stated in the subject I have a situation where if database mirroring is employed for either manual or automatic failover, all the client (including web connections) connections use ODBC not ADO, or OLEDB etc... so what methods are recommended? Client side redirect is not available so I could not employe the "Data Source =A; Failover Partner=B..." option.

Right now the method employed (pre database mirroring and basically employing log shipping on SQL 2000) is to have a DNS alias for the ODBC connection so that if the server were to change in a failover situation the DNS record would have to be altered, so that all the client connections would not have to be reconfigured.

DB Mirroring Setup

Nov 14, 2006

Prepare to setup DB mirroring. Three MS 2003 servers. Two SQL 2005 standard edition as partners and one SQL 2005 Express as witness. Question:

1. Servers are under workgroup (not domain user). Is it ok to use local service account to run DB engine service on all three machine? Is SQLServerAgent service required when setup mirroring?

2. If SQL Server is running as a local service, Do I have to manually create certificates before setup mirroring?

3. After create certificates, can management studio be used to create endpoints on all three machines? If yes, how to select certificates that have been created? If no, can management studio be used to setup mirroring after endpoints have been created?

Basic Mirroring Setup Help

Apr 5, 2006

After going through the Enterprise Manage mirroring setup, I get the error message ...

The server network address "TCP://MYMACH.mynet.net:5022" can not be reached or does not exist. Check the network address name and reissue the command. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1418)

I have three instances of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edtion
MSSQLSERVER (primary) endpoint 5022
MSSQLSERVER (partner) endpoint 5023
MSSQLSERVER (witness) endpoint 5024

I have enabled TCPIP and named pipes on all three protocols.
In surface configuration I have enabled everything.
Each instance has the -T1400 flag set.
Each instance is running under mixed security.
Each sql Server and sql agent instance runs exactly in the same domain account.
The machine has been rebooted.
The following tests all pass

telnet MYMACH.mynet.net 5022
telnet MYMACH.mynet.net 5023
telnet MYMACH.mynet.net 5024

This problem happens both with Enterprise Edition and Developer Edition.

Any ideas?

Database Mirroring Setup Question...

Nov 28, 2007

Hi, I'm having an issue setting up Database Mirroring. The environment here could be an issue.

I'm trying to set this up using 2 different servers both are SQL Ent Edition SP2, windows 2003. I'm not using a witness at this time. The 2 servers do not belong to a domain. They are both in workgroups.

I can setup the endpoints and everything up to the point just before I start mirroring. The issues happen when I go to start mirroring. It gives me a nasty error "please use a FQDN to establish the endpoints. The problem here is I don’t have any FQDN for these servers since they're in a Workgroup.

So, my question here is and I haven't found anything stating that you can't set up mirroring in a workgroup environment but is it possible? I'm assuming since its yelling at me for a FQDN that I can't. Is there any other ways to implement mirroring without a domain?

Thanks for your time, help!

Mirroring Setup Issue With Database Restore...

Sep 13, 2007

I'm setting it up using the directions provided by Microsoft @
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189047.aspx

The problem I originally ran into was exactly like the one mentioned in the
following posting:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/managed/dgbrowser/en-us/default.mspx?&query=mirroring&lang=en&cr=US&guid=&sloc=en-US&dg=microsoft.public.sqlserver.clustering&p=1&tid=95381f96-a34a-4d99-9e31-12719452a11d

I found an article online stating that this can occur of your principle
backup wasn't restored to the mirror server in NO RECOVERY mode. I missed
that step when performing the first restore, so i deleted that database and
started over using the NO RECOVERY option on the mirror restore.

The problem I've run into now is that after my restore executes and
completes, the database remains in a (Restoring...) state and never becomes
accessible.

Anyone know what causes this?

Thank you,

- Tyler

Mirroring :: Async Mirror Setup For High Number Of Databases

Oct 27, 2015

I have a 2 node cluster having 4 cores each wherein having 3 instances of SQL 2008 R2 enterprise comprising of 60 databases, 20 on each instance. I need to setup mirroring for each of the databases to a secondary server having 4 cores and 3 instances.

What i understand is that in this case the mirror server will be providing max of 512 worker threads and the 60 mirror databases would consume 240 threads.

What all needs to be checked for looking into the feasibility of going ahead with a async mirror setup as mentioned above.

SQL 2012 :: AlwaysOn Failover Due To Missed Heartbeats

Dec 10, 2014

I have setup SQL AlwaysOn between primary and DR data centers. Here is the setup:

Primary data center: Server1 (Primary), Server2 (Sync Commit Secondary), Server3 (ASync Commit Secondary)

DR data center: Server4 (ASync Commit Secondary)

Data synchronization and manual failover works fine. But, sometimes, the AlwaysOn cluster automatically fails over to Sync Commit Secondary on Primary data center. Here is the error message from Failover Cluster Manager->Cluster Events:

"Cluster has missed two consecutive heartbeats for the local endpoint xx.xx.xx.yy:~3343~ connected to remote endpoint xx.xx.xx.zz:~3343~"

"Cluster has lost the UDP connection from local endpoint xx.xx.xx.yy:~3343~ connected to remote endpoint xx.xx.xx.zz:~3343~"

I had our network engineer check all connections multiple times and he confirmed everything is fine. But he was also able to confirm (using monitoring tools) that right at the time of a failover, there is almost 2GB worth of traffic going from Primary Server to DR server. That happens every time. I had checked the times of all failovers and there is no job or process occuring that will produce 2GB worth of data. Also, this happens regardless of which server is primary.

Even though the failover works fine, this unexpected automatic failover due to missed heartbeats are occurring often (2-3 times a month).

Here is the list of errors from the Cluster Validation Report:

Under Network Section, I see the following error messages in Red:

Validate Network Communication

Network interfaces Server4 (DR) - SAN_Team and Server1 (Primary) - SAN_Team - VLAN 20 are on the same cluster network, yet address xx.xx.xx.pp is not reachable from xx.xx.xx.yy using UDP on port 3343.

Network interfaces Server4 (DR) - SAN_Team and Server2 (Secondary) - SAN_Team - VLAN 20 are on the same cluster network, yet address xx.xx.xx.qq is not reachable from xx.xx.xx.yy using UDP on port 3343.

Ip Traffic..

Sep 21, 2000

What sort of traffic would be going on between the machine I am on Enterprise Manager and have a server registered (my local machine) to the actual SQL server? I haven't logged onto the actual SQL machine I only have it listed as a registered server and it's sitting there in the list with it's little green "started" icon.

I'm asking because i'm getting accused for a server going down. I opened my EM around the same time as this SQL server went down and some network people see my machine talking to the SQL server at the same time.

Any ideas? Thanks...

Tcp Traffic

Jul 20, 2005

Hi,The application setup is: Access frontend + ODBC (TCP/IP) + MSSQL7Few days ago i was informed that the app generates high networktraffic. Thusi started to look for some savings.I found out (sniffer) that even if the client is idle every 30sek. aTCP packet comes from client to server, then answer goes back. Thepacket seems to be empty (TCP data is 1 byte: 0x00), the answer isempty as well. Seems like kind of watchdog. And it does not seem to berelated to ODBC refresh and any other option possible for setup inAccess client (I set those settings to different that 30sek. values, and 30 sek. traffic still exists).Does anybody know what those packets are for, what module isresponsible for them and how to change interval? My best regards for anybody reading this post,Mirek

I want to run the sql commands I collected on another server I set up identical to production, and play around there.

Does anyone know of a good tool to "replay" those captured commands onot another server?

Need Help Getting Unique Daily Traffic Numbers

Sep 7, 2007

I have a database of details of users that visit my site. Among other things, it saves the ipaddress and the date/time of the visit. I would like to be able to determine the unique visitors (by ipaddress) that i have on any given day. The problem though is that the data is saved as a date and a time, thus when I try and determine the unique visitors, since they are all a different time, MSSQL thinks they are all unique visitors. Any ideas how I can get around this without acctually modifying the data in the underlying table?

SQL 2012 :: Separate Vlan For Replication Traffic On AlwaysOn?

Jun 3, 2015

Ive read a few docs and i have some doubts about the implementation i ll make.

I will setup a FCI between ServerA and ServerB. So my databases will be running on server A or on ServerB. they will be replicated using AllwaysON to ServerC.

Because ill use a diferent vlan for AllwaysON replication iam having some doubts on how can i set the endpoints...

For example.

I ll have the following ips configured for AllwaysON replication on Server A, Server B and Server C 10.10.240.1/10.10.240.2/10.10.240.3

Database teste will be running on serverA. the endpoint configured will be 10.10.240.1 but when database fails over to Server B (using FCI) the ip configured there will be 10.10.240.2... so AO replication will stop working.

I tough on associating a virtual ip to the AllwaysON cluster resource but Microsoft doesn't recommend to alter AllwaysON cluster resource.

How can i implement this configuration?

Recommended DB Design

Feb 9, 2004

Let's say for instance that you have a group of tables that stores address information for different groups (i.e. Doctors, Patients, Providers, etc.) Would it be better to create each table to store the address information or create an Address table that would store this information with an Address type and a link back to each table?

I prefer the second choice, but am having a hard time convincing other devlopers to follow this route. Maybe if I have some input from a more experienced users group I can stress my point a little more effectively. Thanks in advance for any input you can provide.

Two Approaches: Which One Is Recommended?

Jul 14, 2006

I need to import a CSV file with a few million records and 50 fields into a table. Only 1 column in the file needs to be transformed and a second column needs to be checked for data validity (e.g. don't want to let someone pass in 'CA' for an integer field.). Two approaches come to mind:

1. Use SSIS to read the file directly into the table, then apply t-sql to do a mass update to the single field that needs to be transformed. (with this approach it is not clear how to check the data valdity in each row via t-sql, though).

2. Use SSIS to import the file, 1 line at a time, transforming the data and checking its validity.as it goes. I suspect this approach will be much slower than that in 1) but I haven't tried it yet.

Which way do you think would be the fastest?
