Database Mirroring, Client Connections All ODBC So What Methods Are Recommended?

Jun 5, 2006

As stated in the subject I have a situation where if database mirroring is employed for either manual or automatic failover, all the client (including web connections) connections use ODBC not ADO, or OLEDB etc... so what methods are recommended? Client side redirect is not available so I could not employe the "Data Source =A; Failover Partner=B..." option.

Right now the method employed (pre database mirroring and basically employing log shipping on SQL 2000) is to have a DNS alias for the ODBC connection so that if the server were to change in a failover situation the DNS record would have to be altered, so that all the client connections would not have to be reconfigured.

Dominic Baines

Database Mirroring. Asp Application (IIS 6.0) Does't Forward Connections To Mirror Server

Mar 28, 2007

Hi!

I have setup a database mirroring session without witness - ServerA is the principal, ServerB is the mirror,. Each SQL Server instance is hosted on its own machine on sql2005 EE SP2. The mirroring is working correctly. If I submit to server ServerA command:

ALTER DATABASE MYDBNAME SET PARTNER FAILOVER

, ServerB becomes the principal, it means that mirroring works correctly.

My issue is with the SQL Native Client and a front-end ASP application (actually IIS 6.0 site) that needs to make use of this database. I have setup my front-end application to use SQL Native Client and specified the failover server in connection string. Here is the connection string that I am using :

PROVIDER=SQLNCLI.1;Server=ServerA,1433;Failover Partner=ServerB,1433;Database=MYDBNAME;Network=dbmssocn;Integrated Security=SSPI;

Everything works perfectly on my front-end application when ServerA is the principal. If I execute on server ServerA command:

ALTER DATABASE MYDBNAME SET PARTNER FAILOVER

, ServerB becomes the principal, and the failover occurs correctly on the database side. The problem is that my front-end application is not able to query the database on ServerB. The error appears:

Microsoft SQL Native Client error '80004005'

Cannot open database "MYDBNAME" requested by the login. The login failed.

This behavior my appication till I unload IIS 6.0 pool application. After that my front-end application becomes work correctly with ServerB.

When I swap server, I execute on server ServerB command:

ALTER DATABASE MYDBNAME SET PARTNER FAILOVER,

my IIS 6.0 application automaticly turn back to ServerA without any action on my side.

I am using SQL Native Client last version http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/7/c/27c60d49-6dbe-423e-9a9e-1c873f269484/sqlncli.msi (issued in February 2007). Has anyone experienced this issue? I'm thinking that it's a problem in the SQL Native client

SQL 2012 :: Mirroring Endpoint Multiple Instances On Same Server

Jun 18, 2014

I was told that if I wanted to setup mirroring between multiple instance on the same server that each endpoint had to be different number. Is that true? Or can I use the default 5022 for each instance?

Ex.

Server1Instance1
Use endpoint 5022

Server1Instance2
Use endpoint 5022

VS

Server1Instance1
Use endpoint 5022

Server1Instance2
Use endpoint 5023

Mirroring :: Unable To Drop Endpoint With Name Mirror Server

Jul 16, 2015

I have created a Endpoint with "Mirroring Server" on the mirroring instance. Due to the keyword server i am not able to drop the endpoint now.

Also am not able to configure a mirror in a windows workgroup also( the two systems principal and mirror are under same network ). I have followed many ways as per msdn articles and other blogs.

I am not able to connect to the mirror server.

I have tried giving the ip addr and the port no, also the computer name:port no, computername.local:port no etc. Both the systems are running on sql server 2008 only

I always get the error as Connection cannot be established to the destination.

(I have also enabled the ports in firewall by creating inbound and outbound rules)

The issue probably lies in NAMING server address i guess.

Mirroring :: Why DB Mirror Cannot Set DB Recovery Model To Simple

May 2, 2015

DB replication can set db recovery model to simple ,why db mirror can not  db recovery model to simple.

DB mirror must be set to full recovery model.

As far as I know, whatever db mirror  and db replication ,there is a log reader to read the log in the ldf file DB mirror and DB replication are almost the same principle to replicate the db to another db server.

We have contacted Microsoft support to provide us some documents and instructions for failovermirroring combination but they have send us instructions for AlwaysOn option.

What would be best way to build high availability cluster for VDI? Also, since first option is very complicated.

Hello, I am trying to mirror two databases and i receive the following error to the principal error log. "Error: 1443, Severity: 16, State: 2 ".

I HAVE:
1) SQL server 2005 enterprise SP2
2)ServerA And ServerB in the domain.
3)I have installed both ServerA and ServerB sql server with network system account and the services run both as NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SECURITY.
4) The principal database "Test" is on ServerA, i create a full backup and log backup and restore to ServerB the Full backup and the Log with NORECOVERY.So the database "Test" in ServerB is Restoring......
5)I Have created to both Servers Endpoint to Port 5022 with AUTHORIZATION=NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SECURITY.
6)The endpoint are both operational (I have tested through telnet command)....
7)I have added NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SECURITY user to both Security>logins and i gave full permittions sysadmin to the user.
8)I am executing the query "Alter database [TEST] set partner= N'TCP://xx.xx.xx.xx:5022'";
successfully from ServerB (Mirror) but from ServerA i receive that error!!!!

I believe it's network account security issue, but i cannot find a solution for that..... (I also tried to add DCServerA$ user to logins on ServerB AND DCServerB$ user to logins on ServerA cause previously i recaieved an login security error!!!)

We have 2 data centers, site 1 and site 2.  Site 1 is generally our primary, and site 2 is our Disaster Recovery (DR) site.  I want to setup a SQL instance to have extremely high availability.  Therefore I was looking at using DB mirroring, with synchronous data writing, high-safety and auto-failover.  This requires the usage of a witness server.My problem with this setup, is that if the witness and principal are both at site 1, if site 1 goes away (power failure, asteroid impact, lol, anything else that would be a *true* DR scenario), then there is no failover to the mirror server at site 2.   However, if you put the witness at site 2, anytime the WAN link between site 1 and site 2 has an issue, the DB will auto-failover to site 2.  Is the reason for the recommendation of the witness being at the primary site because the thinking is that WAN link failure is likely more common than a *true* DR scenario that takes out all of site 1?

An Error Occurred During Recovery / Preventing Database From Restarting

Oct 13, 2015

We are running SQL Server 2014 Web Edition (64-bit). On three occasions now we have had two of our live secondary log shipping databases become unusable through the log shipping process. We ship logs to these databases every five minutes, and generally the process works fine. However, on three occasions in as many months we have suddenly received alerts warning us that the transaction log restores could not be performed on the secondary databases. The SQL Server Error Log revealed the following:

Date,Source,Severity,Message
10/13/2015 04:01:16,spid52,Unknown,Setting database option SINGLE_USER to ON for database 'ObfuscatedName'.
10/13/2015 04:01:17,spid52,Unknown,Starting up database 'ObfuscatedName'.
10/13/2015 04:01:17,spid52,Unknown,Recovery is writing a checkpoint in database 'ObfuscatedName' (8). This is an informational message only.

[code].....

An error occurred during recovery, preventing the database 'ObfuscatedName' (8:0) from restarting. Diagnose the recovery errors and fix them, or restore from a known good backup. If errors are not corrected or expected, contact Technical Support."

The extract above shows two previously successful restores to the secondary database. Suddenly, at 04:11:16, the database can no longer be started up or restored to. This is despite CHECKDB giving a clean bill of health only five minutes earlier. The result is that the last three lines are then repeated ad infinitum.

The only way we have managed to get around this issue so far is to replace the secondary database with a recent backup of the primary. Once this is in place, any outstanding transaction logs are successfully applied when the log shipping restore job next runs. However, this seems rather drastic.It is rather concerning that our warm-standby databases continue to become corrupted without any apparent explanation from SQL Server.

Server Error 1431 When Setting Up Database Mirroring Using Local System Accounts And Certificate Authentication

May 24, 2006

I attempted to setup database mirroring using a High Availability scenario but when I installed SQL is chose to use local system accounts for all the services. Consequently, I stubled upon a microsoft article explaining how to setup mirroring using local system accounts and certificate authentication but I am stil not able to get it to work. When I try ti initiate the mirror from the mirror server I receive an error stating "Neither the partner nor the witness server instance for database "EDENLive" is available. Reissue the command when at least one of the instances becomes available." I have checked all the endpoints and everything seems to be in order. I even checked to make sure that each server was listening on the appropriate ports and I AM able to telnet to the ports. Please help!

Recovery :: AG Database In Reverting / In Recovery State

Nov 1, 2015

We have an issue with a 3 node SQL 2012 Always on availability group. Normal operation is node 1 (primary replica) with node 2 and node 3 as secondary replicas.After some patching, SQL wasn't running on node 1 hence the AG flipped over to node 2. This went unnoticed for some time and the transaction log for one of the AG databases became full on node 2 and node 3. (I think this is because it couldn't commit the transactions on node 1 so couldn't truncate it's t-log?) The DB is using synchronous replication btw.So I started SQL on node 1 and flipped the AG back to node 1 (with a data loss warning but I accepted this).Now the issue is that on node 2 and 3, the DB in question is stuck in a "Reverting / In Recovery" State. I've tried various commands such as ALTER DATABASE SET ONLINE, RESTORE DATABASE WITH RECOVERY etc but these fail stating unable to obtain a lock on the DB.

The weird thing is that on node 1 the state of the DB is "synchronised".how to resolve this issue on node 2 and 3? I've left them overnight (in case they were rolling back transactions, the DB is fairly large) but nothing seems to have happened. remove the DB from the AG in node 2 and 3 and add it back in again, ie recreate the replication?

Mirroring :: Database Mirroring Changes In Application

Oct 12, 2015

Using SQL Server 2008, we would like propose mirroring between two servers of a critical database. Since we initiate, may require to clarify on its purpose and also required changes from application end.Any changes required from OS Level? (I believe both servers IP or Host name should be added in host entries. Mirroring ports should be allowed/open including Principal and mirror server IP Addresses): Windows Team.Any changes required from Application? (Instance name, authentication: user name and its password should be added in web config files): Application Team.Any changes required from Network Team?Also for mirroring both the principal and mirror servers should be with same version, does it only mean SQL Server 2008 versions are enough or does it also mean to say build numbers 10.00.4000 should also be same.URL....

Failure To Create Endpoint, Error 15145

Oct 26, 2007

Hi,
I have system with SQL Server 2K5 SE 3042 SP2 . I was able to set up mirroring with primary-mirror-witness arrangement through GUI.
In this company I replaced another DBA who left, and the way our sys admin arranged our logins co-existed in domain for a while. Then sys admin, after mirroring was done, removed my login, renamed other DBA's login with mine, and removed his.
Now I cannot create endpoint, either by t-sql or through GUI: "An implicit login creation has failed. Reason: the login may have been dropped or its name may already be in use, error 1545".

After pressing Start Mirroring the following shows: "Database Mirroring Transport is disabled in the endpoint configuratin, error 1486". The 2nd error understandable in view of the 1st one.
I checked sys.database_mirroring_endpoints, it is empty. Anyone has an idea what this implicit login is, and where to look for it?

XML Sample Gets Error: CREATE ENDPOINT Not Supported

Jul 14, 2006

I installed the latest version of SQLX and tried to run the XML sample.

C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90SamplesEnginexmlXmlManuInstructionsReadMe_OnlineManuInstr.htm

The first part of the install.sql ran ok, but it chokes on the CREATE ENDPOINT line: is this really a limitation on the Express edition or did I miss something on installation or configuration?

Msg 7878, Level 16, State 1, Line 3

This "CREATE ENDPOINT" statement is not supported on this edition of SQL Server.

Message Could Not Be Delivered Because The Conversation Endpoint Has Already Closed Error In Profiler

Oct 12, 2007

Hi,

I already had a thread for same problem but didn't recieved any response in last 4-5 months so I created a new thread for this

I am using service broker in between two database servers. following is the way i am sending and receiving messages

Send

BEGIN TRAN
BEGIN DIALOG CONVERSATION @handle
FROM SERVICE @SendService
TO SERVICE @ReceiveService
ON CONTRACT @Contract
WITH LIFETIME = @lifetime;

SEND ON CONVERSATION @handle
MESSAGE TYPE @xmlMessageType(@xmlMessage);
COMMIT

Receive

BEGIN TRAN;
RECEIVE TOP(1) @xmlMessage = message_body,
@handle = conversation_handle,
@message_type = message_type_name
FROM TransactionQueue;

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-- Check to make sure a message was returned to process. In theory this should never happen.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IF @@rowcount = 1
BEGIN

IF @message_type = 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/EndDialog'
BEGIN
END CONVERSATION @handle;
COMMIT
RETURN 0
END

IF @message_type = N'http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/Error'
BEGIN
RAISERROR(N'Received error %s from service [Target]', 10, 1)
END CONVERSATION @handle;
COMMIT
RETURN 0
END

SET @sql = 'EXEC '+@message_processor_name+' @xml'

BEGIN TRAN
EXEC sp_executesql @sql, N'@xml XML', @xml=@xmlMessage
COMMIT TRAN
END CONVERSATION @handle;
END
COMMIT

I see Messages are delivered to the target every thing working fine other than following errors which i am seeing in profiler.

1) "This message could not be delivered because the conversation endpoint has already been closed." I see this error on initiator end. Is it like ending conversation on initiator end when i get "EndDialog" send an acknowledgement, which cannot be recieved by target as it has already ended conversation.

2) "An error occurred while receiving data: '64(The specified network name is no longer available.)'." I don't have much idea about the reason for this error. But in profiler i see value for GUID is different for this error and the real message.

Let me know if you need any other information

SQL Server Not Listen On TCP/IP, Help Me!

Jan 6, 2005

I use SQL Server 2000 as my database. I use WinXP and my computer does not connect to any network.
But I can't telnet localhost 1433.
When I open the file ERRORLOG, it displays:
"2005-01-06 22:36:22.43 server SQL server listening on Shared Memory, Named Pipes."
I checked the enable protocols, they are Named Pipes and TCP/IP and default port is 1433.
But I can't telnet to it. I can't understand why.
Anybody can help me? Thanks.
