Recovery :: Multi Site Clustering Failing Over
Nov 16, 2015
I have setup a WSFC that contains 3 nodes ( node 1,2 belongs to subnet A and node3 to subnet B), lets say node 1 is the primary host in the wsfc.
Each node has their own sql server instance, that i configure an Availability Group that will replicate between node1 and node 3), created an Availability Group Listener that will contain 2 vips for each subnet.
My question here and I am not sure if i missed something when setting up the Availability Group. If i failover an Availability group from sql server from node 1 subnet a to nde 3 subnet b, then the listener will be on the vip that belongs to subnet b and the primary instance will be the one in node 3, but this wont cause the WSFC to move the primary host from node 1 to node 3.
So at this point dont see what is the dependency between setting up the AG with WSFC. when fail over an AG doesn't cause the primary host in wsfc to fail over as well.
Why availability group relies on WSFC and how can i make it to depend so the primary host moves as well?

OS - Windows 2012 R2 Standard Edition.
DB - SQL 2012 Enterprise edition
Total 3 nodes participates for AO setup, 2 Nodes for Local HA and 1 Node for another datacenter for DR. All the 3 Nodes are same domain name and member.
1. Local First 2 Nodes are same subnet XXX.XX.44.XX
2. DR Node another subnet XXX.XX.128.XX
Does it require to add two different IP address while creating cluster name? Not using shared disk SAN storage etc.. I am using Node majority quorum witness setting for failover.

Disaster Recovery Options based on the following criteria.
--Currently running SQL 2012 standard edition
--We have 18000 databases (same schema across databases)- majority of databases are less than 2gb-- across 64 instances approximately
--Recovery needs to happen within 1 hour (Not sure that this is realistic
-- We are building a new data center and building dr from the ground up.
What I have looked into is:
1. Transactional Replication: Too Much Data Not viable
2. AlwaysOn Availability Groups (Need enterprise) Again too many databases and would have to upgrade all instances
3. Log Shipping is a viable option and the only one I can come up with that would work right now. Might be a management nightmare but with this many databases probably all options with be a nightmare.

I am need of comparing ORACLE and SQL clustering,.
1) Dynamic addition / removal of nodes with no effects on data distribution-- I think Yes
2) Integrated clustering technology for all major OS and Server Platforms
3) Automatic Workload management that enables enterprise Grids
4) Recovery Advisories

I tested the failover clustering for SQL 2008R2.When I stop the SQL server services manully, the failover did not fail to another resource. At the Faiolover cluster manager, SQl server(MSSQLSERVER) only show the status for offline. I think it should be move to another owner intead of just show as offline.

Hi,
I am writing Stock inventory and POS application.
POS will be used at multiple branches to collect sales, whereby Stock Inventory will be used in HQ for product info maintenance, stock in and etc.
I need to send all of the branch sales records back to HQ and send updated product info such as cost to branches everyday (could be multiple times per day).
I am thinking to use SQL Server Express 2005 at branches and SQL Server 2005 standard at HQ.
Do you think it is workable? What is the mechanism I can use to "transfer" these data?
Please advice.
Thank you

We have a server A and a server B setup with SQL2014 High Availability - working fine.
I need to add an additional listener to our new DR site (SQLNODECOLO).
What is the best way to do this without impacting production?
Can I just go to server A and add the new listener server here (SQLNODECOLO):

I setup PowerPivot (PP) for SharePoint and activate it on few site collections in production environment; I upload a PP workbooks in a library, manage the data refresh schedules, run the data refresh for an external SQL databases, etc. Everything works fine for several days. One day we decide the move one of the site collections (X) from its current content database to its own (new) content db. The way we did it is that we took the site collection backup in production, restored it in test environment (in its own content db; we deleted the old site collection in test first before restoring), checked everything including PP data refreshes etc.; all worked fine. Then we did the same thing in production - we deleted the old site collection X, restored the site collection from the same backup file that we used in test environment, everything works fine EXCEPT the PowerPivot refreshes!! :-(
I am getting these errors: When I click on the workbook, it gives this error "An error occurred during an attempt to establish a connection to the external data source. The following connections failed to refresh: PowerPivot Data".When I click OK on error dialogbox, it opens the workbook fine but no slicers/refreshes work now. When I go back to the library and click on "Manage PowerPivot Data Refresh" to open the refresh history/schedule page, it gives this generic but scary error: "An unexpected error has occurred. Troubleshoot issues with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation." ULSViewer or Event viewer is not showing anything related to this error!Strange thing is that PP refresh works fine in Test environment, as well as on other site collections in production that we didn't touch (which tells me there is nothing wrong with my PP configuration). Did the backup/restore in prd cause anything? Did moving it in its own contentdb cause anything? (But then why it works in test environment?) Is there anything wrong with site collection PP feature.

We are trying to build HA and DR environment, combining AG and FCI. So we have 3 servers added to a cluster, 2 of them sharing the same storage and working as ACTIVE-PASSIVE cluster instance. The other server has a stand alone instance with its local storage, with the same drivers letters as the cluster instance.
Between the Active FCI and the Stand Alone, we set up an Availability Group. They are running fine, except by the listener. When the stand alone instance owns the Primary Replica, I am able to access the SQL Server instance by the listener, but when the Primary Replica is owned by the FCI, I can't reach the database by the listener (name or IP).
I've opened the same ports in both servers, it hasn't worked though.

I have a windows 2012 cluster environment that consists of two SQL servers nodes with Quorum disk configured as witness.
Manual failover between nodes is working fine, however the sql instance virtual is not seeing the Quorum disk.
Moreover the Quorum disk has the same number as another cluster storage disk, is that considered a problem?
When I move the SQL instance from a node to anohter, should the Quorum Disk change ownership as well to that destination node ? if it is not changing ownership what would be the problem??

We are implementing a multi-site (Windows Server Failover Cluster) WSFC to enable Always On between our primary and DR site. We are not going to use SQL clustered instances. We are not planning to use shared disks. Each node is running a standalone instance of SQL 2012.
I have successfully configured a 3 node multi-site Windows failover cluster with no shared storage. For quorum, I have defined a File Share Witness (FSW). The FSW has voting rights and is in the DR site. The setup looks like this –
WSFC –
•Node A – Site #1 (voting right = 1)
•Node B – Site #1 (voting right = 1)
•Node C – Site #2 (voting right = 0)
•FSW – Site #2 (voting right = 1)
Again - There are no shared disks in our setup. We are not going to use SQL clustered instance. We are going to use Always On with these 3 nodes.
SQL Always On –
•Node A – Site #1 (Primary Replica)
•Node B – Site #1 (Readable Secondary)
•Node C – Site #2 (Readable Secondary)
All the setup including the “availability group” works properly under this setup. However, a failover to site #2 under DR situation is not working and I know why but don’t know what needs to be done to fix the problem.
The following works fine –
•Automatic failover between nodes A and B (same site – site #1)
•Forced failover to node C in site #2 provided at least one of the nodes in site #1 is up (non – DR situation) - this will ensure the cluster is up
The following is not working –
•Forced failover to node C in site #3 when both nodes in site #1 are lost (true DR situation) – This is because the cluster is not up at this point.
I know I have to bring the cluster up somehow and I have not been able to do so by restarting the cluster service.
I tried to run the command to start cluster service.
Question –
How can I FORCE the cluster to come up in Site #2 on node C when it has no voting rights?
I have always worked with even number of nodes and shared disks with traditional clustering. I am not sure what needs to be done in this scenario with 3 nodes and a FSW.

deploying a 2 node SQL AAG, with one VM each DC, in sync mode, in an active-active DC layout, with 1ms RTT and 1Gbps? Similar to a SAN based geo-cluster. HA and DR in a single tin.I'm trying to minimise license costs. Having the 2 node in DC1, with async to site 2 is double the license cost!!

In the case of a manual failover, what happens to open transactions. Are they killed (rolled back), completed, a little bit of both?
Does the status of the query has any impact (are running queries handled differently then waiting ones, does the type of wait have an impact...)
I am using synchronous commit mode and all I seem to find is reference to the potential or absense of loss of data.

Hi,
Sorry for the wide distribution.
I'm trying to find any useful whitepapers about how to effectively build and operate a disaster recovery site at a remote location for SQL Server 2000. Does anyone know where to find such information?
I also know that one good option for my customer is using the Mirroring feature of SQL Server 2005. What are the other options? Is Replication an effective one for a mission-critical database (online banking)?
Thanks in advance

We have 2 env. : Testing and Production, both are running Windows 2003 Enterprise Server with SQL Server 2005. The difference is Testing is NOT running Windows cluster but Production do so, what is the best way to transfer a database from testing to production?
We have another systems that both testing and production are running on NON-cluster and we use backup/restore to transfer the database, can it apply in this case.
And I found that there are a tools called DTC, which can transfer all DB objects from one DB to another, is it a best way to transfer between non-cluster and cluster env.?

We have a requirement to build SQL environment which will give us local high availability and disaster recovery to second site. We have two sites- Site A & Site B. We are planning to have two nodes at Site A and 2 nodes at Site B. All four nodes will be part of same Windows failover cluster. We will build two SQL Cluster, InstanceA will be clustered between the nodes at Site A Server and InstanceB will be clustered between the nodes at Site B, we will enable Always On Between the InstanceA and InstanceB and will be primary owner where data will be written on InstanceA and will be replicated to InstaceB. URL....Now we want we will have instanceC on the Site B and data will be writen from the application available on Site B, will be replicated to the instance on the Site A as replica.

in the process of migrating a big db from server 1 to server 2, we had to roll back the change. I started with taking a full db backup and restoring it on server 2 with norecovery, and then a couple logs with norecovery, and then the last log with recovery.
Is there some way to continue this chain now, I mean to change the db to norecovery, or other way to restore logs.
I dont want to do a new full backup.
If I try to do a log restore now i get the message:
Msg 3117, Level 16, State 4, Line 1
The log or differential backup cannot be restored because no files are ready to rollforward.
Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

We have 3 replica AG setup. 2 replicas are in sync/automatic failover, the other(DR Server, different subnet) in asynchronous/manual mode…All these replicas were on sql server 2012, Recently we upgraded DR server to 2014. Since then we have a problem, the AG databases in 2014 instance went into ‘Synchronizing/ in recovery’ state…The SQL server error log has message, the recovery couldn’t start for the database ‘XYZ’…We tried to create a new database and add it to AG , it works for fine for other two 2012 replicas, but on 2014 we see the same issue

More often than not, I typically don't touch DTC on clusters anymore; however on a project where the vendor states that it's required. So a couple things here.
1) Do you really need DTC per instance or one for all?
2) Should DTC be in its own resource group or within the instance's group?
2a) If in it's own resource group, how do you tie an instance to an outside resource group? tmMappingSet right?

We have an issue with a 3 node SQL 2012 Always on availability group. Normal operation is node 1 (primary replica) with node 2 and node 3 as secondary replicas. After some patching, SQL wasn't running on node 1 hence the AG flipped over to node 2. This went unnoticed for some time and the transaction log for one of the AG databases became full on node 2 and node 3. (I think this is because it couldn't commit the transactions on node 1 so couldn't truncate it's t-log?) The DB is using synchronous replication btw.So I started SQL on node 1 and flipped the AG back to node 1 (with a data loss warning but I accepted this). Now the issue is that on node 2 and 3, the DB in question is stuck in a "Reverting / In Recovery" State. I've tried various commands such as ALTER DATABASE SET ONLINE, RESTORE DATABASE WITH RECOVERY etc but these fail stating unable to obtain a lock on the DB.
The weird thing is that on node 1 the state of the DB is "synchronised".how to resolve this issue on node 2 and 3? I've left them overnight (in case they were rolling back transactions, the DB is fairly large) but nothing seems to have happened. remove the DB from the AG in node 2 and 3 and add it back in again, ie recreate the replication?

Hello,I am trying to construct a query across 5 tables but primarily 3tables. Plan, Provider, ProviderLocation are the three primary tablesthe other tables are lookup tables for values the other tables.PlanID is the primary in Plan andPlanProviderProviderLocationLookups---------------------------------------------PlanIDProviderIDProviderIDLookupTypePlanNamePlanIDProviderStatusLookupKeyRegionIDLastName...LookupValue....FirstName...Given a PlanID I want all the Providers with a ProviderStatus = 0I can get the query to work just fine if there are records but what Iwant is if there are no records then I at least want one record withthe Plan information. Here is a sample of the Query:SELECT pln.PlanName, pln.PlanID, l3.LookupValue as Region,p.ProviderID, p.SSNEIN, pl.DisplayLocationOnPCP,pl.NoDisplayDate, pl.ProviderStatus, pl.InvalidDate,l1.LookupValue as ReasonMain, l2.LookupValue as ReasonSub,pl.InvalidDataFROM Plans plnINNER JOIN Lookups l3 ON l3.LookupType = 'REGN'AND pln.RegionID = l3.Lookupkeyleft outer JOIN Provider p ON pln.PlanID = p.PlanIDleft outer JOIN ProviderLocation pl ON p.ProviderID = pl.ProviderIDleft outer JOIN Lookups l1 ON l1.LookupType = 'PLRM'AND pl.ReasonMain = l1.LookupKeyleft outer JOIN Lookups l2 ON l2.LookupType = 'PLX1'AND pl.ReasonSub = l2.LookupkeyWHERE pln.PlanID = '123456789' AND pl.ProviderStatus = 0ORDER BY p.PlanID, p.ProviderID, pl.SiteLocationNumI know the problew the ProviderStatus on the Where clause is keepingany records from being returned but I'm not good enough at this toanother select. Can anybody give me some suggestions?ThanksDavid

I am new to Reporting Services and hope that what I am looking to do is within capabilities :-)
I have many identical schema databases residing on a number of data servers. These support individual clients accessing them via a web interface. What I need to be able to do is run reports across all of the databases. So the layout is:
Dataserver A
Database A1
Database A2
Database A3
Dataserver B
Database B1
Database B2
Dataserver C
Database C1
Database C2
Database C3
I would like to run a report that pulls table data from A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, C1, C2, C3
Now the actual number of servers is 7 and the number of databases is close to 1000. All servers are running SQL2005.
Is this something that Reporting Services is able to handle or do I need to look at some other solution?
Thanks,
Michael

Greetings,We are trying to set up a set of "Leading Practices" for ourdevelopers, as well as ourselves, and hope some gentle reader canrecommend some documentation in favor of what appears to be the rightposition to take.We do not allow third party applications to run on our SQL Servers. Wewant to include DTS Packages under the definition of third partyapplications, insisting instead that the developers save theirpackages as COM Formatted files into their source code control systemsand run them from their app servers. The devlopers would like to hearthis from someone besides ourselves. While strong recomendations to remove guest access to MSDB altogetherabound, I have been unable to find a straight forward discussion ofthe advantages of structured file storage and app server off load ofDTS packages. Can anyone suggest any articles, white papers, rants, etc attemptingto formulate a solution to the benefits of taking msdb away fromguest, with the advantages of running DTS from an App server orworkstation platform, with the packages protected in source codecontrol?Thank youJohn Pollinsjpollins @ eqt . com

We are in the process of consolidating all our SQL6.5 and SQL7 databases to a single SQL 7 server - once completed we want to setup a 2 node SQL7/2000 cluster on either NT4 Enterprise or W2k Advanced Server. I would therefore appreciate any advice in choosing between the two platforms based on cost, ease of setup & configuration and ongoing reliabilty & uptime etc - we currently have no NT4 Enterprise Servers so would have to purchase these licenses anyway. Correct me if I am wrong but I also understand that setting up a cluster on NT4 Enterprise is considerabely more complicated and time consuming than on W2K Advanced Server? Any advice would be greatly appreciated..
