I am having problem to apply updates into this function below. I triedusing cursor for updates, etc. but no success. Sql server keeps tellingme that I cannot execute insert or update from inside a function and itgives me an option that I could write an extended stored procedure, butI don't have a clue of how to do it. To quickly fix the problem theonly solution left in my case is to convert this recursive functioninto one recursive stored procedure. However, I am facing one problem. How to convert the select command in this piece of code below into an"execute" by passing parameters and calling the sp recursively again.### piece of code ############SELECT @subtotal = dbo.Mkt_GetChildren(uid, @subtotal,@DateStart, @DateEnd)FROM categories WHERE ParentID = @uid######### my function ###########CREATE FUNCTION Mkt_GetChildren(@uid int, @subtotal decimal ,@DateStart datetime, @DateEnd datetime)RETURNS decimalASBEGINIF EXISTS (SELECTuidFROMcategories WHEREParentID = @uid)BEGINDECLARE my_cursor CURSOR FORSELECT uid, classid5 FROM categories WHERE parentid = @uiddeclare @getclassid5 varchar(50), @getuid bigint, @calculate decimalOPEN my_cursorFETCH NEXT FROM my_cursor INTO @getuid, @getclassid5WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0BEGINFETCH NEXT FROM my_cursor INTO @getuid, @getclassid5select @calculate = dbo.Mkt_CalculateTotal(@getclassid5, @DateStart,@DateEnd)SET @subtotal = CONVERT (decimal (19,4),(@subtotal + @calculate))ENDCLOSE my_cursorDEALLOCATE my_cursorSELECT @subtotal = dbo.Mkt_GetChildren(uid, @subtotal,@DateStart, @DateEnd)FROM categories WHERE ParentID = @uidENDRETURN @subtotalENDGORod
Dear fellows, Can anybody tell me how can i apply recusive/Tree query using select statement. For example I've a table structure for an Organization as follows:
emp_id emp_name supervisor_id ---------- --------------- ------------------- 101 ZAFIAN 102 BRUNNER 101 108 CALLAHAN 102 105 RUSSO 102 110 SIM 102 103 DUELL 101 and so on
1. How can I get the above records in Hirarchical format starting from top or from anywhere else in the hierarchy?
In Oracle it can be done as follows: SELECT emp_id,emp_name,supervisor_id FROM employee_tbl CONNECT BY supervisor_id = PRIOR emp_id START WITH supervisor_id is null;
Please reply me at the following address if possible: faisal@visualsoft-inc.com
Category_ID Number Parent_ID Number <----Category_ID reports to this colum Category_Name Varchar....
MY QUERY <---I replaced the query above with my data ============================= WITH Hierarchy(Category_ID, Category_Name, Parent_ID, HLevel) AS ( SELECT Category_ID, Category_Name, Parent_ID, 0 as HLevel FROM Dir_Categories UNION ALL SELECT SubCategory.Category_ID , SubCategory.Category_Name, SubCategory.Parent_ID, HLevel + 1 FROM Dir_Categories SubCategory INNER JOIN Hierarchy ParentCategory ON SubCategory.Parent_ID = ParentCategory.Category_ID ) SELECT Category_ID, Category_Name = Replicate('__', HLevel) + Category_Name, Parent_ID, HLevel FROM Hierarchy
My OUTPUT============
All the categories under reporting to Parent_ID 0 or continuous, then the ones reporting to 1 and so fourth. Subcategories are not showing within their main categories. I AM GOING NUTS WITH THIS.
Hi, I would like some help on a stored recursive procedure I have been working on for my assigment. I had the solution from my course master some time back, but accidentally deleted the file before finishing the course, and would like the solution to that problem. The questions are as follows: 1) Create a recursive stored procedure that counts from 1 to 10 2) Create a recursive stored procedure that counts from 10 to 1
I believe there's more than one approach in solving these procedures, and any feeback is welcome.
How do I call my Stored Procedure recursively:CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.GetParentIONode(@IONodeID int,@FullNodeAddress char(100) OUTPUT)ASBEGINDECLARE @ParentIONodeID intIF EXISTS (SELECT ParentIONodeID FROM IONodes WHERE IONodeID = @IONodeID)BEGINSET @FullNodeAddress = CAST((SELECT ParentIONodeID FROM IONodes WHEREIONodeID = @IONodeID) AS VARCHAR) + ' / ' + @FullNodeAddress--CALL SP Again with @ParentIONodeID and @FullNodeAddress untilParentIONodeID = NULLSELECT @FullNodeAddressENDENDGO
Well I have a two tables lets say they look like as follows:
Table A CompanyID Location
TableB CompanyID CompanyName Date
The CompanyID column has values that look like this:
AAA OR AAA.BBB OR AAA.BBB.CCC OR AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD OR AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD.EEE OR AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD.EEE.FFF
each line representing the level of the company.
we can see that CompanyID column exists in both tables. and I would like to find out the CompanyName from table B for each companyID that exists in Table A.
but the tricky part is that for a specific CompanyID in tableA I might not have a exact match. e.g. in A lets say I have AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD.EEE for CompanyID but in table B i might not have AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD.EEE but instead have AAA.BBB or AAA.BBB.CCC or AAA.
so I have to walk up the tree or these levels to look for a match an get the companyName. the match logic is as such.
If in table A companyID = AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD.EEE then look for same value in B if NOT FOUND then remove the last level from the companyID value from Table A. so new value of CompanyID = AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD Now look for this new value AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD in table B. IF NOT FOUND then
remove another level from ComapnyID in table A so new companyID = AAA.BBB.CCC and look for AAA.BBB.CCC in table B. just going up the tree by chopping off a level till I find a match.
now the question is how to do this in TSQL.... can someone help?
So what I really want to do is to look for a match between A and B based on companyID.
The MLID in the header table will be generated automatically. All the Parents will be stored in the HEADER and their childs in the DETAIL.When a child is added to a parent, the Parent's MLID will be stored in the MLID field in the DETAIL table with the newly added child. That child will come to the PARENT table when a child is added to that. The MLITEM id in the parent table can be repeated when that item undergoes a rivision. But the MLID for this will be a new one.An item in the Parent Table can have any number of childs and these childs can have any number of children(there is no limit for the level.)
Now if i select an item id '1000' (for example from the Header Table) with a concatstring (it could be without a concat string also).all its childs and their children should be printed in a report like the following
************************************************** *************************** I NEED TO CREATE THE TREE USING BOTH THE HEADER(MSTHDRML) AND THE DETAIL TABLE(MSTDTLML) ************************************************** ***************************
How can this be done.Is it necessary to use a recursive function in a stored procedure to generate this ...... i have never used Recursive function in SQL SERVER Stored Procedures. Can anyone help me on this(with Code).if not stored procedure, then what else can be done for this.
I need to develope a stored procedure (eventually called by a trigger) that creates a record in an event table for all the descendants of a drawing. There are 3 tables involved as example tables shown below:
DwgTable
DwgID (integer)--drawing record identifier
PrntDwgID (integer)--parent drawing record identifier (a previously defined DwgID from this table)
DwgEventTable
DwgEventID (integer)--record identifier
DwgID (integer)--value from DwgTable
EventID (integer)--value from EventTable
EventTable
EventID There are other fields in two of the tables and only the fields shown in the DwgEventTable, but only the fields shown are required for adding a record in the DwgEventTable for a new event in the EventTable. The problem is identifying all the DwgID's of the descendant of the DwgID where the EventID occurred. There may be 0 to N descendants in 0 to N generations. I need to add a record for the original DwgID and all the descendant DwgID's in the DwgEventTable for the event identified by EventID.
I could do this from the client side, but a better place would be from the server side. I need some clue(s) on how to start coding a recursive stored procedure in SQL Server 2005. From what I have read, you cannot create a managed code procedure that appends or updates records--if managed code can add/modify records then I can do the above with managed code procedure.
Hello, I am hoping someone can help me in this. I am looking to write a stored procedure that will return the heirarchy of an organization. I will display how the heirarchy might look and then list the tables involved.
John Smith
- Jacob Jones - Lisa Thompson - Samuel Barber
- Paul Smith - John Jackson
Ok, so Jacob, Lisa, an Samuel report up to John Smith. Paul and John Jackson report up to Samuel Barber.
Here are the tables:
Users holds the user_id, first_name, last_name, and reports_to_user_id. User_Roles holds the user_id, role_type_id Role_Types holds the role_type_id, and the type (which could be Administrator, Standard, Guest) for example. In addition, Role_Types also has ranking which must be taken into consideration as well. 1 being the top rank and 9 being the lowest.
I'm working on a stored procedure to populate a Crystal report. My company insists that we put the report parameters in the stored procedure instead of in Crystal...so that the SQL server (rather than the desktop)does the work of restricting the data. Is there anything I can do on the SQL side(possibly User Defined Data Type) to get Crystal to prompt me for a date WITHOUT the time? I started with this:
When Crstal prompts me for the parameters, I can type the date or use the calendar to pick a date, but I AM FORCED to enter a time. I know I could choose to ignore the time in the stored procedure, but the users don't want to see the time section of the parameter. Apparently SQL doesn't have a plain "date" parameter without a time.
However if I do it this way, I can't seem to find a way to make sure a valid date is entered when Crystal prompts the user for the dates.
If using char(10) turns out to be the best method, is there a way I can pre-populate the Crystal prompts like this: @BeginDate = 1st day of the current month @EndDate = the current system date
Crystal seems to allow hard coded default values, but I can't find a way to do calculated default values.
I'm coding in a black hole that has a moving target in it.
Ok, I now need to call an stored procedure and with the results from the stored procedure I need to populate my tables on my handheld.
Any ideas on how I can do this? I was using inline sql "select col1, col2, from table1" and doing my rda pull from that, but now I need to call stored procedures to do this and one sp takes a parameter. How can I accomplish this on handheld ?
I got assignment, how to make it appear in the right order .
/* DROP TABLE EMP SELECT * INTO Emp FROM ( SELECT 'A' EmpID, NULL ManID, 'Name' EmpName UNION ALL SELECT 'MAC' EmpID, 'A' ManID, 'Name__' EmpName UNION ALL SELECT '1ABA' EmpID, 'MAC' ManID, 'Name____' EmpName UNION ALL SELECT 'ABB' EmpID, '1ABA' ManID, 'Name______' EmpName UNION ALL SELECT 'XB' EmpID, 'A' ManID, 'Name__' EmpName UNION ALL SELECT 'BAC' EmpID, 'XB' ManID, 'Name____' EmpName ) b */
I've got an application where I need to traverse a "tree" of parent and child relationships. I've got code in my application that does this nicely, and I want to move it to the database in the form of stored procs for a little better performance. The initial way I created it, is that the stored proc creates a cursor for the parent nodes, then calls itself for each child node, and rips through it that way. The problem is is that I get a cursor already exists error. Am I doing something wrong, or is that a limitation of SQL server to only have one named cursor open at a time? Is there a better way to do this?
I'm trying to write a recursive stored proc for the TreeView control that will return XML for the TreeView. Does anyone have any examples of code to do this or any resources that might help me write the stored proc?
Hi allI am implementing a stored procedure which needs to recursively callitself until specific condition is reached, Could anyone give someadvice about that? Thanks a lotRobert Song
I am looking to populate a Schedule table with information from twoother tables. I am able to populate it row by row, but I have createdtables that should provide all necessary information for me to beableto automatically populate a "generic" schedule for a few weeks ormoreat a time. The schedule table contains:(pk) schedule_id, start_datetime, end_datetime, shift_employee,shift_positionA DaysOff table contains:(pk) emp_id, dayoff_1, dayoff_2 <-- the days off are entered in dayofweek (1-7) formA CalendarDays table contains:(pk) date, calendar_dow <-- dow contains the day of week number (asabove) for each day until 2010.My main question is how to put all of this information together andhave SQL populate the rows with data based on days off, for a fewweeks in advance. Anysuggestions?

Currently I have the following stored procedure which simply adds a new row in my SQL Express 2005. What I want is that -1). before inserting the record find out the new ID (primary key) value. (ID is automatically a sequential integer generated by SQL Server)2). and set COMPANY_ID = (new) ID Any thoughts? Thanks ALTER PROCEDURE usp_tbl_Company_Insert @Company_ID int, @Name varchar(200), AS<FIND THE NEW ID of the new row in the database> @Company_ID = (new ID) INSERT INTO tbl_Company (Company_ID, Name,)VALUES (@Company_ID, @Name)
I am working on a report where some customization is need to be delivered.. situation is , i have some parameter in report @USER_ID , @Report_Type where i am proving selection to user to select Report Type (Pending Or Completed) and passing USER_ID auto matically from URL string of user login(C# code).
I have another parameter @USER_IDS which is multiple selection for user and it will be filled with the users which lie under passed @USER_ID means i just need to add dataset with the query to select users from mapper table where reporting_head =@USER_ID, simple, but i have requirement to populate the underlined users with the selection of @USER_ID and @Report_Type and it need some TSQL code to populate so i am using Another store procedure and using same parameter as my main store procedure has .
Now i am using dataset with this store procedure to fill my @USER_IDS parameter
Both parameters value will be passed from main report parameters now , when i am previewing a report i am getting error
and i also tried to write exec statement in dataset query with the main repport paramters but exec is not supported ..
Hi all - I'm trying to optimized my stored procedures to be a bit easier to maintain, and am sure this is possible, not am very unclear on the syntax to doing this correctly. For example, I have a simple stored procedure that takes a string as a parameter, and returns its resolved index that corresponds to a record in my database. ie exec dbo.DeriveStatusID 'Created' returns an int value as 1 (performed by "SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName= 'Created') but I also have a second stored procedure that needs to make reference to this procedure first, in order to resolve an id - ie: exec dbo.AddProduct_Insert 'widget1' which currently performs:SET @statusID = (SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName='Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID) I want to simply the insert to perform (in one sproc): SET @statusID = EXEC deriveStatusID ('Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID) This works fine if I call this stored procedure in code first, then pass it to the second stored procedure, but NOT if it is reference in the second stored procedure directly (I end up with an empty value for @statusID in this example). My actual "Insert" stored procedures are far more complicated, but I am working towards lightening the business logic in my application ( it shouldn't have to pre-vet the data prior to executing a valid insert). Hopefully this makes some sense - it doesn't seem right to me that this is impossible, and am fairly sure I'm just missing some simple syntax - can anyone assist?

More Information for you to know: I have the "ssmsExpressDB" database in the Database Expolorer of VB 2005 Express. But I do not know how to get the SqlConnection and the SqlDataAdapter into the Form1. I do not know how to get the Fill Method implemented properly. I try to learn "Working with SELECT Statement in a Stored Procedure" for printing the 6 rows that are selected - they are not parameterized.
I have some code that I need to run every quarter. I have many that are similar to this one so I wanted to input two parameters rather than searching and replacing the values. I have another stored procedure that's executed from this one that I will also parameter-ize. The problem I'm having is in embedding a parameter in the name of the called procedure (exec statement at the end of the code). I tried it as I'm showing and it errored. I tried googling but I couldn't find anything related to this. Maybe I just don't have the right keywords. what is the syntax?

I have a sub that passes values from my form to my stored procedure. The stored procedure passes back an @@IDENTITY but I'm not sure how to grab that in my asp page and then pass that to my next called procedure from my aspx page. I have a stored procedure and in that I will be calling a stored procedure. Now, based on the parameter value I will get stored procedure name to be executed. how to execute dynamic sp in a stored rocedure
at present it is like EXECUTE usp_print_list_full @ID, @TNumber, @ErrMsg OUTPUT
I want to do like EXECUTE @SpName @ID, @TNumber, @ErrMsg OUTPUT
I have a stored procedure that calls a msdb stored procedure internally. I granted the login execute rights on the outer sproc but it still vomits when it tries to execute the inner. Says I don't have the privileges, which makes sense.
How can I grant permissions to a login to execute msdb.dbo.sp_update_schedule()? Or is there a way I can impersonate the sysadmin user for the call by using Execute As sysadmin some how?
Has anyone encountered cases in which a proc executed by DTS has the following behavior: 1) underperforms the same proc when executed in DTS as opposed to SQL Server Managemet Studio 2) underperforms an ad-hoc version of the same query (UPDATE) executed in SQL Server Managemet Studio
What could explain this?
Obviously,
All three scenarios are executed against the same database and hit the exact same tables and indices.
Query plans show that one step, a Clustered Index Seek, consumes most of the resources (57%) and for that the estimated rows = 1 and actual rows is 10 of 1000's time higher. (~ 23000).
The DTS execution effectively never finishes even after many hours (10+) The Stored procedure execution will finish in 6 minutes (executed after the update ad-hoc query) The Update ad-hoc query will finish in 2 minutes
