Redirecting Physical Database Files At Reboot
Jul 20, 2005
Is there a method in SQL Server 2k to re-locate the physical database
files at the time the server reboots. Currently, the only way I know to
do this is by scripting some OS-level commands.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I have detached the database via sp_detach_db in a job, (I was trying to use a job to detach the database, then make copies of the mdf file, then attach the databases as different copies, somehow the job failed due to file locked) I tried to delete the physical files, but they were still locked. I tried several times, two of them I was able to delete the mdf files, but not the ldf file. The other one both mdf file and ldf file can not be deleted. I was not able to see the database via Management studio.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

Can anyone inform me how I would go about merging or combining 2 or more physical database files into 1. For example, suppose you have the following files out on your server:
c:mssql7datapubs_data1.mdf
c:mssql7datapubs_data2.ndf
c:mssql7datapubs_data3.ndf
but you only want
c:mssql7datapubs_data1.mdf
Is there any way to combine pubs_data2.ndf and pubs_data3.ndf into pubs_data1.mdf so you are only left with 1 database file called pubs_data1.mdf?
Thank you,
PJ

I've been trying to get a definitive answer to this question but alas I have conflicting and patchy answers so far from other sources. I have an index that, lets say, requires 10GB of data space to rebuild..This index resides on a filegroup that spans 2 files on two seperate drives (i.e. a mdf and ndf)
When I rebuild this index how will each of these datafiles grow as the rebuild proceeds to completion? Lets for the time being remove the caveats of any other activity hitting the example index/database in question. My tests seem to show that only the mdf will grows (or the file with the lowest id in the that filegroup) provided there is enough space available in that particular file to complete the operation. The secondary ndf dat file doesnt grow at all if the mdf has enough space.
Is expected behavior? i.e. the index will be rebuilt in a contiguous manner relative to the files contained with the filegroup i.e. fileid 1 will grow till limit reached then next fileid grows etc?

I have a few SQL instances on my server (jdjfdijdk)
They where called and organized like this:
MyServer - Database1
MyServer/BBserver - Database2
For some reason instance MyServer/BBserver has stopped and I couldn't make it start so I decided to reboot the server. After reboot the MyServer/BBserver was working but when open the other instance MyServer using Management Studio the Database1 disappear and the Database2 can be accessed by MyServer/BBserver and MyServer instances.
Even a backup made of Database1 and stored at
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLBackup vanished.
How to recover Database1?

I had to to relocate the database log file and I issued an Alter database command but by mistake I put a space in the file name as below. The space is at the beginning file name. Now I am unable get the database loaded to SQL Server. The database has 2 replications configured, so deleting and re-attaching the database means the replication needs to be re-configured. Is there an alternative way to issue a command to update the database FILENAME ? Not sure if this can be edited in master database (sys files).
ALTER DATABASE [User_DB]
MODIFY FILE (NAME = User_DB_log, FILENAME = 'I:SQLLogs User_DB_log.ldf')
GO

Hello all. Before my arrival at my current employer, our consultantsphysically set up our MSSQL 7 server as follows:drive c: contains the mssql enginedrive d: contains the transaction logdrive e: contains the data filesNo filegroups were set up and the data files consist of only 1 largephysical file. Currently, our data file is >10GB. When I was trained onthe physical aspects of sqlserver, I was told to never create physical files> 2048MB each. If I did, I could expect inefficient physical storage ofdata and slower performance (due to the OS).Our server has 2 RAID-5 arrays. Drive c: and e: are located on the firstarray and drive d: on the second. We're running Windows 4.0 NT Server SP6with NTFS.Can someone comment on the use of 1 single large data file vs. more smallerdata files?

I do not understand why an SSAS cube disappears after a reboot. We schedule a reboot for our server weekly and after the reboot. I have to deploy my SQL server Analysis Database. It is just gone after a reboot and why this happened. I searched a lot on internet but it seams that I am the only one on this world with this issue.
How I can configure the server in such a way that the SSAS cubes will not disappear after a reboot.

I want to move 2 databases to another physical disk. They are both single file databases. It looks like a fairly straigtforward attach and detach procedure, but I have a couple of questions:
The log files (.ldf) currently reside on a separate physical disk from the data files, if I attach and reattach the data files will the logs remain where they are by default or do I have to re specify there location?
Is there any advantage to running the update statistics portion of the sp_detach_db?

I have been trying to use DMO(C++) to backup a database and then restore from that backup to a new db name AND physical data and log files, with no success. I have been able to successfully restore the backup to the same database and change the physical file names using the RelocateFiles property on the Restore object, but not change both.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All,
I redirected errors the some err table I defined. SSIS package gives two columns for the error information. One is the ErrorCode, the other is ErrorColumn. But the values for those two are some numbers which I have no ideas of what it means. How to translate to some meaningful information?
Thanks a lot

Hi,We have a situation where we want to move our current databaseserver to a different hardware and rename the server. If we change the Physical server name, do we have to go thru the wholeprocess of changing it in sql server by running sp_dropserver,sp_addserver?Can we have an alias for the server name in DNS and can sql serverresolve the server name internally by going thru DNS?For eg: Our current database server name is FFSQL-PRD01. We have itregistered in EM as FFSQL-PRD01. Now we renamed the server toSTLSQL-PRD01, and added an entry in DNS for STLSQL-PRD01 with alias ofFFSQL-PRD01( the same old name as alias). After doing this when I goto EM and click on FFSQL-PRD01 would it give me an error? or can itresolve the server name by going to DNS.When you install SQl server the default instance has to be the physicalserver name, Why? Is the physical server name stored in Masterdatabase( SYSSERVERS table)? Thanks for your help.Geetha

I have old editions of SQL Server such as 6.5, 7.0, 2000, and 2005. The biggest hold up we have in retiring these servers is the connection string changes that would have to be made. Any way that I could redirect these calls to a newer SQL Server 2012?

I'm getting some strange error handling behaviour when I tried to redirect rows when an error is encountered at the OLE DB Destination. I enabled the fastload option and set the maximum insert commit size to 10,000. My package is trying to insert 1,000,000 rows. When the row containing bad data is encountered, the entire batch is redirected to a separate table with no table constraints. So I have approx 990,000 rows of good data inserted, and approx 10,000 rows in an error table. However, only 2 of the 10,000 rows are actually bad data.
I changed the filter in the data source to reload 5 rows from the 10,000 rows of bad data. The 5 rows include the 2 rows of bad data. The fastload option and max insert commit size at the OLE DB Destination are not changed. When the package completed, 3 rows were inserted to the destination and the 2 bad rows are redirected again. Even though this is the outcome I wanted (only the real bad data is redirected), shouldn't all 5 rows be redirected since they should all be treated as a single batch?
My second question is, is there a way to get the best of both worlds - be able to load lots of data as fast as possible and only redirect the rows that are actually bad?
Thanks.

Hi,
I am developing a package which takes data from SQL Server 2005 and hits the JDE files.
In this package I need to send error mail when anyrow returns failure on OLE DB Command component which calls JDE Stored Procedure. So I created a script component which takes error output (red arrow) from OLE DB Command component. But whenever error is triggered, this is not redirecting the rows to script component even though I configured Error output as "Redirect Row". Can anyone please tell me how to redirect error to a script component?

Hello!
What is the best way to make a copy of an existing sql server database to another (physical) server?
Plan to make a full backup of another sql server database to another server. I've read about detach and attach
and copying the datafiles and log files but some say it is prone to data loss? Is this true?
And another thing, what if the existing sql server can't affor downtime for me to copy db files etc.?
Anybody here who have done the same?
Any help is very much appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi,guys!I have a table below:CREATE TABLE rsccategory(categoryid NUMERIC(2) IDENTITY(1,1),categoryname VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL,PRIMARY KEY(categoryid))Then I do:INSERT rsccategory(categoryname) VALUES('url')INSERT rsccategory(categoryname) VALUES('document')INSERT rsccategory(categoryname) VALUES('book')INSERT rsccategory(categoryname) VALUES('software')INSERT rsccategory(categoryname) VALUES('casus')INSERT rsccategory(categoryname) VALUES('project')INSERT rsccategory(categoryname) VALUES('disert')Then SELECT * FROM rsccategory in ,I can get a recordeset with the'categoryid' in order(1,2,3,4,5,6,7)But If I change the table definition this way:categoryname VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL UNIQUE,The select result is in this order (3,5,7,2,6,4,1),and 'categoryname 'in alphabetic.Q:why the recordset's order is not the same as the first time since'categoryid' is clustered indexed. If I change the table definition again:categoryname VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL UNIQUE CLUSTEREDthe result is the same as the first time.Q:'categoryname' is clustered indexed this time, why isn't in alphabeticorder?I am a newbie in ms-sqlserver,or actually in database, and I do havesought for the answer for some time, but more confused,Thanks for yourkind help in advance!

Our NT person thinks that rebooting the SQL 2000 (on WIn 2000) server every month is a good idea (this is a client production box). I am strongly against it. For starters any trends I am trying to capture with performance monitor become useless every time we do this. I am willing to listen to every one's opinion, but I hope by now that SQL 2000 is stable enough not to have to do this.

Hi all,
I downloaded and ran AdventureWorks.msi into my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) one year ago.But I did not know how to attach it to my SSMSE then. Last week, I deleted it from the "Add or Remove" of Control Panel and I downloaded the new AdventureWork.msi and installed it my SSMSE. Today, I tried to use the Database Explorer of VB 2005 Express for the first Stored Procedure programming. I clicked on AdventureWorks.mdf and I got the following error: One or more files do not match the primary of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupt and should be restored from a backup. Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'CENADe1enxshc'. Log file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataAdventureWorks_Data_log.ldf' does not match the primary file. It may be from a different database of the log may have been rebuilt previously. Please help and advise me how to correct this problem.
Thanks,

Hi all (newbie @ asp.net)(oldie @ ASP 3)What is the purpose of using an attached MDF database files in the App_Data folder on a web site as to importing it into the SQL server directly or creating it on the SQL server. Does a mdf database attached file purely use the SQL server as a connection interface. Is it something similiar to DSN(ODBC) Connections for ms access databases.
