Redistributing MSDE && Open Source Software

Am I correct in inferring that MSDE can only be redistributed with open source software that does not require the source code to be included with subsequent distributions. For example, distributing MSDE with an application that is licensed under the BSD license is OK, but distributing it with something licensed under the GPL is not. Correct?
I'm getting this from 3.2 of the MSDE redistribution license:

My company has a site in ASP.NET that we’d like to package and sell as a complete product. So the client gets it, runs an install and it’s ready to go for them. Currently we’re using SQL Server 2000 for development along with an instance of MySQL due to licensing. I realized that our copy of Backup Exec comes packaged with an install of MSDE 2000. My question is would we be able to do the same thing with our site since there’s only going to be 1 database in it and approximately $400 for licensing a full version of SQL Server is out of the question.

Hi.
My company developed a database-driven Visual C++ application. Currently this application is being redistributed with SQL Server Express 2005.
The limitation on the maxium datafile size of SQL Express 2005 (4 GB) is not acceptable in some particular installations, so we are considering to propose a different version of the application which should be redistributed together with the full-fledged SQL Server 2005 (instead of the Express).
It is not clear to me what are to possibilities and the requirements to redistribute the full SQL Server 2005 together with a ISV's application. I have read something about the (MANY) Microsoft Partner Programs, and I have seen the procedure to become partner is usually quite complex and long... So my question is:
Is there some way in which we could redistribute SQL Server 2005 with our application, without the need to follow complex enrollment procedures to Partner Programs? We would also accept a higher price-per-license, but we would like to seamlessly redistribute SQL Server 2005 within the installation package of our application.
Any help / hint would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone direct me to where I can download a redistributable (setup) for SQL Server Express w/Sp2 that is for both 32 and 64 but systems? The only on I can find on the MS website is 'en_sql_server_2005_express_edition_sp2_x32.exe' and appears to be for 32 bit systems only. Will this install on a 64 bit system?
Also, if anyone has any tips on integrating this into an InstallShield InstallScript project, they would be welcome. I am assuming I can just launch from within my install since it is not MSI based, but have not tried yet.
I will need to either install a new instance or upgrade an existing instance depending on the presence of that instance. Any easy ideas welcome.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good site to find open source database structures (such as ERD's, scripts, or something of that nature)?
I think I have a pretty good handle on database design, but it would be nice to have a resource like that so that I can compare the design of my DB to DB's that people (smarter and more experienced than me) have created for similar purposes.
What I'm thinking of is a site like Open Source Web Design (www.oswd.org) for Databases. Anyone know of anything?

1. Compare data rowcounts from two databases of the same structure.(On different servers).
2. Compare the structures of two databases.(On different servers).
3. Tool a developer can run on his/her desktop to capture a log of the database that his application is hitting.

I have a package which has an Excel source with the 'Data access mode' set to SQL command and then a sql select statement. Â When I try and hit the 'Preview...' button below the 'SQL command text' window I get the following error:
 "Error at Standard Data Flow Tasks [source tasks name]: No column information was returned by the SQL command"

Ordinarily this would be down to the fact that my SQL is shocking, I hit the 'Preview...' button whilst the workbook the source is pointing at was open and it works fine??

I can't figure this out, but needless to say the package errors with a NEEDSNEWMETADATA when I try and run it.

I get the below error only when my IDE open. It connects well when it is found closed.
[SqlException (0x80131904): Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user 'JPASPNET'.]
I could solve this by giving the logged in windows user to impersonate under IIS window > WEBSITE > ASP.NET tab > EDIT CONFIG > APPLICATION tab
But I wish someone could give me the proper solution.
I almost tried all from giving ASPNET user as a administrator to configuring the same in Express management tool.
Environment: XP pro, VWD and SQL Express

Hi there,
I got an approach like that:
1) Read something from DB - check the value, if true stop if false go on2) Read the second Value (another SQL Statement) - check the value etc.
Now I could open the connection at 1) and if I have to go to 2) I leave the connection open and use the same connection at 2). Is it ok to do that?
The other scenario would be opening a connection at 1), immediately close it after I read the value and open a new connection at 2).

Post installation of SQL Server 2014 Express edition, I am able to connect to the Database Instance.
But while opening a new query window in SSMS or opening a table getting the error:

Hello,
I'm not sure if it's the setup I did wrong, but I can't seem to get my
text datatype in my database to store more than 900 characters.
I'm trying to setup a news database for my website, which will populate
the information into a datagrid. To test, I manually added a news
item in the database through the visual studio 2003 gui. I
immediately noticed a problem as the I was getting an error after a
long news item saying:
"The value you entered is not consistent with the data type or length of the column, or over grid buffer limit."
I couldn't find anthing to set the buffer limit and the datatype is
"text" filled with simple text in the column. As a further test,
I
simply entered 12334567890123... up to 900 characters and still
recevied the error.
I would appreciate someone leading me in the right direction on this one.

I am trying to change the computer name of a machine running MSDE but I get an error when SQL Server starts. With regular SQL when I change the name of a computer I re-run setup and setup fixes this problem. MSDE can only be installed from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem.
My question is "How do I change the name of a computer running MSDE with out reinstalling MSDE"

We currently have the problem, that all our machines are produced with the
same name and afterwards the name is changed. So we have the problem that
the checksum key for the MSDE isn't valid anymore. As MSDE can only be installed
from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem. Does anyone
know a solution for this problem ?? A program recalculating the cheksum ??

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this this question but I'll give it a shot.
The only db development that I have ever done is in MS Access. I have a project at work that is being accomplished in VB and I need a db engine to use as the back end. Visual studio came with a copy of MSDE. Is this tool worth using or should I invest in mySQL? Are there any advantages to using MSDE over mySQL?

I have a got a package with source as sql table which has got 50 columns. We are using only 10 columns out of this. Recently one column name has changed and thus throws error invalid mapping. When I open the source to do the changes noticed that all the colums are prselected now and also the datatypes got changed to default ( I had changed the datatypes as per my requirement while i developed). So now I had to select required columns from source and redo the datatype changes in advanced editor.Is there any option which doesnt disturb this settings and we just need to correct the mapping alone.Â

I want to transform an xml flow to an html flow. For this, I create an XmlDataDocument, I add on it, all that I want, and I store it in a file (in a dataflow task).
After that, in an xml task, I set the input properties like that:
Operation type: xslt
SourceType: File connection
Source: ras.xml
All works fine. But now, I want to use a variable to store my xml data. So, instead of storing my data in ras.xml, I store it in a variable like that:

Error: 0xC002F304 at Format HTML Mail, XML Task: An error occurred with the following error message: "Root element is missing.".
Error: 0xC002928F at Format HTML Mail, XML Task: Property "New Source" has no source Xml text; Xml Text is either invalid, null or empty string.
Furthermore, when I want to debug it, in replacing the xml task, by a script task, I can see that in my RAS variable, I get the xml data which is well formed.

I was trying to load data using SSIS, Data Flow Task, OLE DB Source, source was a view to a OLE DB Destination (SQL Server). This view returns 420,591 rows from Query Analyzer in 21 seconds. Row length is 925. When I try to executed the Data Flow Task from SSIS, I had to stop the process after 30 minutes, because only 2,000 rows had been retrieved. I modified the view to retun top 440, 000 and reran. This time all 420, 591 rows were retrieved and written in 22 seconds. Next, I tried to use a TOP 100 Percent. Again, only 2,000 rows were return after 30 minutes. TempDB is on a separate SAN Raid group with 200 gig free, Databases on a separate drive with 200 gig free. Server has 13 gig of memory and no other processes were executing.
The only way I could populate the table was by using an Execute SQL Task and hard code an Insert into table selecting data from the view (35 seconds) from SSIS.
Have anyone else experience this or a similar issue? Anyone have a solutionexplanation?

I am having a huge xml file with nested section.
i also have a xsd file for that xml.
i have a destination table where the data from the xml should be loaded into.
i am using the xml source transformation. But o get all the data i need to use multiple merje joins to get the data in a single row which i can insert into the destination.i was not quiet convinced with using so many joins.
so i tried using the script source transformation where i am using xml objects to get the node and dynamically construction the data row. and the output is then inserted into the destination.
on comparing the two approach the one using the script source is working much faster than the xml source transformation.
i wanted to know is there any limitaion using the script source to parse through xml files.
also i would like to know any other better way of getting the data from xml source without using the joins.

Just a quick question about connection management. My application willnever need more than 1 or 2 connections about at any given time. Also, I donot expect many users to be connected at any given time. For efficiency, Iwould like to keep connections alive throughout the lifetime of the objectsrequiring them, rather than opening a new connection, executing code andthen closing it again. What is the most efficient way of doing this?Should I perform the open/close or just one open when I create the objectand a close when I dispose of it?

Hi,
I am trying to create a program that transfers tables to flat files.
At this point in time, I have suceeded in created one that creates delimited files.
However, I am now trying to create fixed-width files as you can do with the SSIS designer, but programatically.
Is there a way to programatically determine the width of a column from the source table? I can not seem to find any kind of function or member that stores this information or allows me to retrieve it.
I know what I need to change in order to set a width for a column, but I just don't know how to find the width without just asking the user to provide one.

I have set up a new connection as a connection from data source, but I cannot see how to use this connection to create my Data Flow Source. I have tried using an OLE DB connection, but this is painfully slow! The process of loading 10,000 rows takes 14 - 15 minutes. The same process in Access using SQL on a linked table via DSN takes 45 seconds.
Have I missed something in my set up of the OLE DB source / connection? Will a DSN source be faster?

Today I was making a few reports.
When I tested the reports in Visual Studio, they worked great: I got the expected result.
But when I deployed the reports to our reportserver the problem started.
When I click on the directory in which my reports are deployed, I got my 4 reports.
Till now everything worked correct.
But when I click on a report to view the results it went wrong.
I got an error:
"Cannot create a connection to data source 'Live'"
(Live is the name of our data source).
We are using the Windows Logons and I am sure that I have all the rights on the server, I gave myself 'sysadmin' rights, so it should work.
I also have tried it with all the roles assigned on my account, but then it still won't work.
When I modify the data source, and set it to another server en database it works.
The datasource 'Live' exists on a x64 MsSQL server, en the other datasource is on a x86 MsSQL server.
Maybe that is the problem?
Can someone tell me what is wrong?

as far as I know from docs and forum datareader is for .NET data in memory. So if a use a complex dataflow to build up some data and want to use this in other dataflow componens - could i use data datareader source in the fist dataflow and then use a datareader souce in the second dataflow do read the inmemoty data from fist transform to do fursther cals ?
how to pass in memory data from one dataflow to the next one (i do not want to rebuild the logic in each dataflow to build up data data ?
Is there a way to do this ? and is the datareader the proper component ? (because its the one and only inmemory i guess, utherwise i need to write to temp table and read from temp table in next step) (I have only found examples fro .NET VB or C# programms to read a datareader, but how to do this in SSIS directly in the next dataflow?

How can i view this in GUI format from Visual Studio? It is an example off how to use default 'select all' in multivalued parameters so i assume I can see it working as a project ? Not sure how to use this XML file?

we have so many logins .which and every having sysadmin, i removed sysadmin permission and assign db_owner permission to 7 users and only 3 users having error
