Referencing Colum Names In Recordset Which Is Created By Join - URGENT!

Jul 30, 2006

Urgent help needed!

I moved an application from ASP+ACCESS to ASP+MS SQLSERVER and I have
the following problem:

If the join on two tables results on duplicate colum names (which
appear in both tables) I could reference them by using:

RECORDSET("TABLENAME.COLUMNAME")

However with SQLServer if I try this kind of reference I get an error
message.

How can between two colums with the same name from two differen tables?

Thanks in advance!

PIVOT With Dynamic Columns Names Created

Aug 3, 2007

I am trying to do a PIVOT on a query result, but the column names created by the PIVOT function are dynamic.

For example (modified from the SQL Server 2005 Books Online documentation on the PIVOT operator) :

SELECT
Division,
[2] AS CurrentPeriod,
[1] AS PreviousPeriod
FROM
(
SELECT
Period,
Division,
Sales_Amount
FROM
Sales.SalesOrderHeader
WHERE
(
Period = @period
OR Period = @period - 1
)
) p
PIVOT
(
SUM (Sales_Amount)
FOR Period IN ( [2], [1] )
) AS pvt

Let's assume that any value 2 is selected for the @period parameter, and returns the sales by division for periods 2 and 1 (2 minus 1).

Division CurrentPeriod PreviousPeriodA 400 3000 B 400 100 C 470 300 D 800 2500 E 1000 1900

What if the value @period were to be changed, to say period 4 and it should returns the sales for periods 4 and 3 for example, is there a way I can change to code above to still perform the PIVOT while dynamically accepting the period values 4 and 3, applying it to the columns names in the first SELECT statement and the FOR ... IN clause in the PIVOT statement ?

Need a way to represent the following [2] and [1] column names dynamically depending on the value in the @period parameter.

[2] AS CurrentPeriod,
[1] AS PreviousPeriod

FOR Period IN ( [2], [1] )

I have tried to use the @period but it doesn't work.

Thanks in advance.

Dynamic File Names For Raw Files Created By Conditional Expressions

Feb 26, 2007

Hello,

I have a huge table of around 6.2 billion rows in Oracle and I need to load this table to SQL Server. I am creating multiple raw files based on contact_dates in the table. I have used conditional expressions to branch out and create raw files. I need to specify static file names for each branch or I have to create multiple variables for each branch and use expressions to create file names.

My intention is to create only 1 variable and evaluate the expression based on the conditional expression description. Is this possible?

Mind Boggling / How Can You Query Self Referencing Tables? (self Referencing Foreign Keys)

Jun 15, 2006

For example, the table below, has a foreign key (ManagerId) that points to EmployeeId (primary key) of the same table.
-------Employees table--------
EmployeeID  . . . . . . . .  .  .  int
Name  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  nvarchar(50)
ManagerID  . . . . . . . .  .  .  .  int

If someone gave you an ID of a manager, and asked you to get him all employee names who directly or indirectly report to this manager.
How can that be achieved?

Three Table Join - Display Newest Comments Left On Photos Created By Members

Jul 6, 2014

I am trying to tweak some code which is used to display the newest comments left on photos created by my members.

The existing code is this:

SELECT top 15 pnumber, pcomment, puser FROM photocomments order by pdate DESC

So the latest comment left was for photo #210879 from user "Cla" (redacted user names). The 2nd newest comment would be for photo #211072 from a member named "mo". pdate is a date field

However for the script I have coded I don't want all of the photo comments to show up. This is because I use access levels based on the type of location (higher levels mean more restricted galleries). I check the access levels as I go through the recordsets.

I use this method to get the top 15 comments:

SELECT top 15 pnumber, pcomment, puser FROM photocomments order by pdate DESC

Now I have to use two other tables to determine the access level. Since PHOTOCOMMENTS is just a list of photo #'s and the people who left comments for those photos, I need to:

a) determine what location the photo is from and
b) determine the access level of that location

I use: select creator, access from locations where id=(select dir from photos where id="&pnumber&")"

This is a two step process as you can see. The first part is:

select dir from photos where id=(pnumber)

ID is the same value as pnumber seen in PHOTOCOMMENTS. That is to say PHOTOS.ID = PHOTOCOMMENTS.PNUMBER

If I haven't confused you yet, the executed code for the first example would be:

select dir from photos where id=210879

which would get me a value for DIR. DIR is the location number which would be:

select creator, access from locations where id=(dir value)

Just to simplify it a bit....

There are three tables (shown below)

PHOTOCOMMENTS
PHOTOS
LOCATIONS

I need to: SELECT top 15 pnumber, pcomment, puser FROM photocomments order by pdate DESC (first table shown)

but then also

select creator, access from locations (The last table shown)
where id=(select dir from photos where id="&pnumber&")"

So the first table PHOTOCOMMENTS has to also join PHOTOS table where PHOTOS.DIR = PHOTOCOMMENTS.PNUMBER in order to get the value of "DIR" and then DIR is joined to the LOCATIONS tables where PHOTOS.DIR = LOCATIONS.ID

Here is the actual code, which I am trying to make into a single SQL command

strSQL = "SELECT top 15 pnumber, pcomment, puser FROM photocomments order by pdate DESC"
set ors = oconn.Execute(strSQL)
tl = 0
do until ors.eof or tl > 15
' until we have 15 results because not every recordset will be of the proper security level

[Code] ....

Bonus points if you can also get it to select from LOCATIONS only WHERE userlevel >= 2

Ambiguous Column Names In Multi-Table Join

Jun 21, 2006

Hi all,A (possibly dumb) question, but I've had no luck finding a definitiveanswer to it. Suppose I have two tables, Employees and Employers, whichboth have a column named "Id":Employees-Id-FirstName-LastName-SSNetc.Employers-Id-Name-Addressetc.and now I perform the following join:SELECT Employees.*, Employers.*FROM Employees LEFT JOIN Employers ON (Employees.Id=Employers.Id)The result-set will contain two "Id" columns, so SQL Server willdisambiguate them; one column will still be called "Id", while theother will be called "Id1." My question is, how are you supposed toknow which "Id" column belongs to which table? My intuition tells me,and limited testing seems to indicate, that it depends on the order inwhich the table names show up in the query, so that in the aboveexample, "Id" would refer to Employees.Id, while "Id1" would refer toEmployers.Id. Is this order guaranteed? Also, why does SQL Server use such a IMO brain-damaged technique tohandle column name conflicts? In MS Access, it's much morestraightforward; after executing the above query, you can use"Employees.Id" and "Employers.Id" (and more generally,"TableNameOrTableAlias.ColumnName") to refer to the specific "Id"column you want, instead of "Id" and "Id1" -- the"just-tack-on-a-number" strategy is slightly annoying when dealing withcomplex queries.--Mike S

Urgent Help With Query (Cross Join)

Sep 28, 2006

I have the following tables:members--------------member_idmember_tpc_id ( = tpc.tpc_id)tpc------tpc_idcourse------------course_idtpc_assignment---------------------------tpc_assignment_idcourse_idenrollment-------------------member_idcourse_idenrollment_status Now I want to select all members where member_tpc_id>0 and get the enrollment_status of each member in each course where course_id IN (Select course_id From tpc_assignment)Now what i did was get all the members and then all the courses and did a cross join between them. There are about 1900 members and 80 courses and when I do a cross join I get 1900*80 rows (152000) and the status of each member for all the 80 courses. If not enrolled it returns Not Enrolled (i have a UDF which takes a member_id and a course_id and returns the status). The BIG problem is that its taking about 6-8 mins to run the query and as a result its timing out on the aspx page. Can someone please tell me how I can do what i am trying to do without using the cross join because I suspect its the culprit here. The query I came up with is  Select
*, dbo.returnStatus(temp1.user_id, temp2.course_id) As Status,
(Select tpc_title From tpc Where tpc_id = temp1.member_tpc_id) As Tpc_Title
From
(Select member_id As user_id, member_name, member_tpc_id
From members Where member_tpc_id> 0 And organization_id = '1'
)temp1
cross join
(Select course_id As course_id, course_title As course_title
From course Where course_id IN
(Select course_id From tpc_assignment Where tpc_requirement_id IN
(Select tpc_requirement_id From tpc_requirement) And course_id<>0 And organization_id = '1')
)temp2
Order By member_name, Tpc_TitlePlease help. Thank you.

Get New Database Created Then Running Script To Created Tables / Relationships

Jun 29, 2015

trying to get a new database created then running a script to created the tables, relationships, indexes and insert default data. All this I'm making happen during the installation of my Windows application. I'm installing SQL 2012 Express as a prerequisite of my application and then opening a connection to that installed SQL Server using Windows Authentication.

E.g.: Data Source=ComputerNameSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=master;Integrated Security=SSPI; Then I run a query from my code to create the database eg: "CREATE DATABASE [MyDatabaseName]".

From this point I run a script using a Batch file containing "SQLCMD....... Myscriptname.sql". In my script I have my tables being created using "Use [MyDatabaseName]   Go   CREATE TABLE [dbo].[MyTableName] .....". So question is, should I have [dbo]. as part of my Create Table T-SQL commands? Can I remove "[dbo]."? Who would be the owner of the database? If I can remove the [dbo]., should I also remove dbo. from any query string from within my code?

Join Table Key To Multiple Table Names

Nov 5, 2004

Hi there. I haven't been able to figure out how to join a table on column on multiple table names. Here's the situation:

I have a table "tblJob" with a key of jobID. Now for every jobID, the program creates a new table that keeps track of the stock before the jobId was processed and after it was processed to give accurate stock levels and show the difference in stock levels. So, a jobID of 355 would be related to the table: "tblPreStock_335" and "tblPostStock_335". These 2 tables have all the materials in stock and the quantity. Therefore they show how much material was used. I need to figure out the difference in the material in the stock before and after the processing.

That means that I have to get a stockID, get the associated pre and post tables, and then display the difference of ALL the materials in the pre and post tables.

Could someone help me get started on the right path? Even a link to similiar problem that I haven't found would be nice.

Thx

Colum Name - Alias

Aug 10, 2007

We are thinking of using general purpose column names in our application schema. We want to give the option to the end user to customize the filed names to fit their business . We want to build the functionality on the generic names so that it will work for multiple customes.

Example: We may want to have 10 Strings, 10 numbers and 5 booleans pre defined and reports running off of the table. The customer can name first number as pressure, second one for length and map their data to the table. Other customer can use the first number for temperature and the second one for width.

Is there a way to do it in SQL server w/o having a lookup table for column name aliasing?

Thanks

Under 6.5, this caused problems at our site unless the Procs were 'refreshed'.
Is this only necessary where select * is used?
Thanks

Having Issue Inserting Large Text Colum Into DB

Jul 7, 2004

I have a large text colum I am trying to insert into a DB
This colum is about 800 chars longs

I have set the colum type in the table to text

I have set the table option for text in row to on

I have set the table option for text in row to 1000

But it is still chopping the text at the 256 char mark on insert.

Anyone have any ideas ?? This is SQL 2000.

Chris
