How can i clear cache memory in sql server 7.0 without stop and restart server. I need this for performance testing.
Thanks
We see the following message in our error log.
WARNING: Clearing procedure cache to free contiguous memory.
It is accomonpanied by fairly intensive CPU activity.
We get this roughly once per working day.
Anyone have any idea why, and what we can do to stop this?
Regads,

I have a virtual server (VMware ESX) with 64GB RAM running a single instance of SQL 2012 SP1. The max memory config is set to 59392 (58GB).
The Page Life Expectancy for this server has been averaging well under 10 mins for the last few days, according to our monitoring.
I have been checking the amount of data in the buffer cache periodically during the day with the below query, which seems to show that there is never more than about 10GB of data at any one time, frequently dropping below 5GB:
SELECT COUNT(*) AS BufferPages,
CONVERT(decimal(10, 2), COUNT(*) / 128.0) AS BufferMB
FROM sys.dm_os_buffer_descriptorsWhy would the amount of cached data be so low (and cause so much churn)?
I am aware that other things will require some of that memory (plan cache etc.) but with Max Mem of 58GB, I would expect there to be a much higher amount of actual cached data at any one time. I did the same checks on another VM with the same amount of RAM/Max Mem setting, and there was 50GB of data in the cache, with PLE measured in hours.
I would like to know what happens when a very large reference data set for a lookup transform with full caching enabled is getting loaded during package execution and the computer memory runs out or is very low.
Does SSIS
a) give an out of memory error of some sort
b) resort to a no caching or partial caching mode
c) maintain the full caching mode but will switch to using the paging file(virtual memory).
I think it will resort to using the page file in which case the benefits of in memory lookups are lost and performance would suffer. If I cannot upgrade the memory or shrink the reference set somehow, i should switch that lookup task to use partial caching or no caching with an indexed lookup table. Would this make sense?
Im getting this error when trying to set up a cache dependency...are there any special permissions etc?From CS:SqlCacheDependency dep = new SqlCacheDependency("MySite-Cache", "Products");Cache.Insert("Products", de.GetAllProductsList(), dep); From connectionStrings.config:<add name="SiteDB" connectionString="Data Source=localhost,[port]SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=true;User Instance=true; AttachDBFileName=|DataDirectory|ASPNETDB.MDF" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />Also tried this using my machinename<add name="SiteDB" connectionString="Data
Source=<machinename>,[port]SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=true;User
Instance=true; AttachDBFileName=|DataDirectory|ASPNETDB.MDF"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> From web.config: <caching> <sqlCacheDependency enabled="true" pollTime="10000"> <databases> <add name="MySite-Cache" connectionStringName="SiteDB" pollTime="2000"/> </databases> </sqlCacheDependency> </caching> EDIT: So making progress I can't seem to get the table registered for cache dependency:The sample i have says"aspnet_regsql.exe -E -S .SqlExpress -d aspnetdb -t Customers -et"and the command line response is "Enabling the table for SQL cache dependency..An error has happened. Details of the exception:The table 'Customers' cannot be found in the database."Where does this "Customers" table come from? There is obviously not an application specific "Customers" table in aspnetdb I'm confused probably more by the example than anything....
Is there a way to drop clean buffers at the database level instead of the server/instance level like the undocumented €œDBCC FLUSHPROCINDB (@dbid)€??
Is there a workaround for €œdbo€? to be able to flush procedure and data cache without being elevated to €œsysadmin€? server role?
PS: I am aware of the sp_recompile option that can be used to invalidate cached execution plans.
Thx.
Hi guys,
I am looking at the plan caches/cached pages from the perspective of
sys.dm_os_memory_cache_counters and sql serverlan Cache - Cache Pages
For the first one I am using
select (sum(single_pages_kb) + sum(multi_pages_kb) )
from sys.dm_os_memory_cache_counters
where type = 'CACHESTORE_SQLCP' or type = 'CACHESTORE_OBJCP'
a slight change from a query in
http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlprogrammability/
For the second just perfmon.
The first one gives me a count of about 670,000 pages only for the object and query cache and the second one gives me a total of about 100,000 pages for five type of caches including object and query.
If I am using the query from http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlprogrammability/ to determin the plan cache size
select (sum(single_pages_kb) + sum(multi_pages_kb) ) * 8 / (1024.0 * 1024.0) as plan_cache_in_GB
from sys.dm_os_memory_cache_counters
where type = 'CACHESTORE_SQLCP' or type = 'CACHESTORE_OBJCP'
it gives me about 5 GB when in fact my SQL Server it can access only max 2GB with Total and Target Server Memory at about 1.5 GB.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on?
On Microsoft performance monitor, what is the difference between SQL Server Cache Manager: Cache Hit Ratio and SQL
Server Buffer Manager: Buffer Cache Hit Ratio? We have a production server where the buffer cache hit ratio is
consistently at 99%, which is normal. However, the cache hit ratio is 73%. What is the difference between the two
hit ratios, and why would we have such a significant difference between the two?
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
I am looking to test this feature - and the "Transaction Performance Collector" has recommended me a table to port to In-Memory OLTP.Â
I have now tried the "Table Memory Optimization Advisor" tool.
After a couple of tweaks to the table design - the tool is now passing validation but the tool is not allowing to progress to the next step:
Could it be down to not having enough memory? But would this not show in the advisor?
Hello. I have received the follwoing error upon an attempt to Browse the Cube. All other tabs are functional, including the Calculations tab. We are running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and SQL Server 2005 SP2. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
**EDIT** - Have confirmed SP1 for VS2005 is installed both locally and on server, also.

I've been researching AWE to determine if we should enable this for our environment.
Currently we have a quad core box with 4 gb of RAM (VMware). OS: Windows 2003 std, SQL Server 2005 std. 3GB is not set but will be as soon as we can perform maintenance on the server.
I have read mixed feedback on AWE, either it works great or grinds you to a hault. I would assume that the grinding to a hault is due to not setting the min/max values correctly or not enabling the lock page in memory setting.
We only have one instance of SQL on the server and this box won't be used for anything else aside from hosting SQL services. We do plan on running SSRS off of this server as well.
1. Will running SSRS and enabling AWE cause me problems? Will I have to reduce the max setting by the SSRS memory usage or will it share and play nice?
2. How do I go about setting the Max value? Should it be less than the physical RAM in the box? Right now its set to the default of 214748364, even if I don't enable AWE should this default value be changed?
3. It seems that even at idle the SQL server holds a lot of memory and the page file grows. If I restart the process in the morning, memory usage in taskmon is at 600mb or so. By the end of the day, its up around 2gb. How can I track down whats causing this, should this even concern me?
4. The lock Page in memory setting worries me. Everything I've read on this seems to give a warning about serious OS and other program support degradation. In some cases to the point where they have to restore the settings on the server before they can bring it back up. What are your thoughts on this.
I have a Windows sever 2012 with sql server 2012 enterprise. Ram size is 22GB. Sometimes SQL sever takes 95% memory. My question, How to reduce memory size without killing any process because it's production server. So there are many background process is running. And,Is there any guides to learn why Memory is raise d so high and how to reduce it.
View 10 Replies View RelatedHello, I understand that we should use SSMS -> Server Properties -> Memory to put a cap on the SQL server memory usage, therefore it gives some space memory for OS, this is based on the fact if the max memory is not specified, SQL will use whatever available memory and eventually crash the system.
My question is that when a server has SSIS and SSAS services installed along with the SQL service. Would the max memory setting covers the SSIS and SSAS memory usage, or the SSIS and SSAS has to shared the memory with OS?
Thanks,

I am running Visual Studio 2005. I have an SSIS Package which is consuming a huge amount of memory. During the execution of the package the memory keeps increasing. Until finally i get an Out of Memory exception. I have run this package using dtexec, and in the BIDS. No difference. I do have some script components and have added some code to get the assemblies in the current appdomain. I do see that one particular assembly is increasing on every loop. VBAssembly every time it hits the script component is increasing by 6, and along with it the memory is climbing. What is this VBAssembly being used for is there an update to SQL Server Integration Services that I need?
Thanks! Aaron B.
sql server 2000 is running on windows server 2003 ... 4gb of memory on server .... 2003 was allocated 2.3gb nd sql server was allocated (and using all of it) 1.6gb for total of approx 4gb based on idera monitor software ... all memory allocated betweeen the OS and sql server .... then 4 more gb of memory added for total now of 8g ... now idera monitor shows 1.7gb for OS and 1.0 gb for sql server ..... 'system' info shows 8gb memory with PAE ... so I assume that the full 8gb can now be addressed .... why are less resources being used now with more total memory .... especially sql server ..... i thought about specifying a minimum memmry for sql server but i amnot convinced that would even work since it seems that this 1gb limit is artificial .... it it used 1.6 gb before why would it not use at least that much now ??
thank you
i want to create a lot of index for my database for performance.but i need find memory usage by indexes.
How to find memory usage by index in sql server?
I've a database with a memory optimized filegroup on it. How can I remove it?I have removed the memory optimized table I had on it, but when I try to remove the filegroup I receive an error.
View 12 Replies View RelatedHi,
I am going to install SQL Server 2000 (then SQL 2K5) on a Win Server 2K3 with 8 GB of ram, but it will be 16 GB in the near future.
I would like to reserve a fixed memory (for momemt less than 3-4 GB) for SQL Server and the rest for application (virtualization).
Without AWE enabled, max memory for SQL Server 2K5 is 4GB as for SQL Server 2000?
How can I manage and optimize memory keeping in mind AWE. (any doc, website available?)
Thank
So I started a new job recently and have noticed a few strange configurations. Typically I would never mess with min memory per query option and index create memory option configuration because i just haven't seen any need to. My typical thought is that if it isn't broke... They have been modified on every single server in my environment.
From Books Online:
• This option is an advanced option and should be changed only by an experienced database administrator or certified SQL Server technician.
• The index create memory option is self-configuring and usually works without requiring adjustment. However, if you experience difficulties creating indexes, consider increasing the value of this option from its run value.
Hello frnds Can Anybody explai what does it mean by question itself and how to resole it ?

I have an existing data warehouse that is refreshed nightly from system1.
We will be moving to a new system2 1/1/06.
The old system1 will be phased out by the end of 2006.
Several tables on system2 will have different keys.
I have to move the data from both systems in the data warehouse.
Here's the issue.
I have to totaly refresh the data warehouse nightly.
Once system2 is phased out how do I keep the data from system1
and refresh only data from system2.
Hi
I did a load testing and found the following observations:
1. The Memory:Pages/sec was crossing the limit beyond 20.
2. The Target Server Memory was always greater than Total Server Memory
Seeing the above data it seems to be memory pressure. But I found that AvailableMemory was always above 200 MB. Also Buffer Cache HitRatio was close to 99.99. What could be the reason for the above behavior?
HI,
I have a problem with the data that I want to delete and insert new one on my SQL.It will work if I just delete a row. And work well if I just insert a row.But it will not work if I delete and insert at once on one procedure.
Here's the code :
Protected Sub RolesRadioButtonList_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles RolesRadioButtonList.SelectedIndexChanged Session("CurrentRoleId") = Me.RolesRadioButtonList.SelectedValue ' Call Sub RemoveUsersInRoles RemoveUsersInRoles() ' Call Sub AddNewUsersInRoles AddNewUsersInRoles() End Sub Sub RemoveUsersInRoles() ' Create SQL database connection Dim sqlConn As New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|ASPNETDB.MDF;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True") Dim cmd As New SqlCommand cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text ' Delete that row with correct UserId cmd.CommandText = "DELETE aspnet_UsersInRoles WHERE (UserId = '" & Session("CurrentUserId") & "')" cmd.Connection = sqlConn sqlConn.Open() cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() ' Close SQL connecton sqlConn.Close() End Sub Sub AddNewUsersInRoles() ' Create SQL database connection Dim sqlConn As New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|ASPNETDB.MDF;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True") sqlConn.Open() ' Create new row with new UserId Dim sqlString As String = "INSERT INTO aspnet_UsersInRoles (UserId, RoleId) VALUES( '" & Session("CurrentUserId") & "','" & Session("CurrentRoleId") & "')" Dim sqlComm As New SqlCommand(sqlString, sqlConn) Dim sqlExec As Integer = sqlComm.ExecuteNonQuery ' Close SQL connection sqlConn.Close() End Sub-------------------------------------------
I can delete the row if I call 'RemoveUsersInRoles'And I can insert new one if I call 'AddNewUsersInRoles'
But if 'RolesRadioButtonList_SelectedIndexChanged' is called, it will not work well.If the row not exist, it will insert new row. And that what I want. But If the row is exist, It wont delete that row and wont insert the new one. That's the problem.
Do I need some 'pause' or 'refresh connection' here ?
Thank You.
Our application is C++ and datbases are Sybase. We are 11.5.1 Sybase. Lately some of our clients have complained about data refresh problems. That if a user has made some changes within the application then these data changes are taking long time to reflect to other users in the system. We do have in our application processes to automatically refresh data for other users but for some odd reason it is not working properly. Also every day we run sp_recompile and sp_stat on the tables and stored procs. Any ideas or leads ?
Thanks

I want refresh data de SQL Server, every certain time at night, but I want that it does only, automaticy.
In SQL sentencs or DTS
What I can do. Thanks
You know how I mentioned before that I was working with a database with a (bunch of) view(s) that are defined like this...
CREATE VIEW MyView AS
SELECT * FROM ExampleTable
Well, after altering the underlying table I noticed that the view is not picking up the new columns which leads me to believe I need to refresh the view.
Is this possible, if so, how?

Is there a way (command or stored procedure) to RECOMPILE or REFRESH a USER DEFINED FUNCTION? I can recompile SPs with sp_recompile and refresh views with sp_refreshView, but I could not find any way to refresh User-defined functions (some of them are like views, with parameters).
Environment: SQL 2005 SP2.
Thanks !
Please help.I have Database A (Archived data), Database B (Transactional data). Both A and B do not have any timestamps in any tables.I need to bring A (only once because it is archived data) and B withonly differentials into Database C for reporting purposes.Currently C is cleared before loading B with differentials every nightand A is not loaded since it takes 15 hours to load. Now I want to bring A once and leave it and then bring B every nightwith differentials without clearing C.Please suggest some solutions.Thank You

While user open the report and update report parameter A, the report parameter B get default value with the right default value but when user change his selection in parameter A, the default value in parameter B doesn't changed
Any idea ?
What do you do to address this:
[OLE DB Source [1]] Warning: The external metadata column collection is out of synchronization with the data source columns. The column "objectName1" needs to be updated in the external metadata column collection.
A corollary question: what does right-clicking a package in Solution Explorer and clicking "Reload with Upgrade" do?
Hi all...
when i select the 1st parameter in the report(in webpage) ... then the complete page is getting auto refreshed...same is happening for all the parameter selection...is it not possible to stop it from refreshing....
simply to say i want to get data without refreshing...

-We are using SSIS packages for various kind of data load from excel source.
-If there are any change in the data type or format of excel, the package cries for the Metadata mismatch.
-During design time if you accept the metadata changes, all things work fine.
But in our case we have deployed the packages on Production Server, now the excel file format/data has changed. The packages are expecting a different metadata so they are not working at all.
Do you have any suggestions for the above problem?
Thanks, Vijay.
HI,
I have attached logs for my packages which runs for every one hour.
so, by end of the day the size of the logs is getting more.
I would like to refresh the log for every day or for each time that the package runs.
How to get it done.
Could you please help in this.
Thanks in advance.
