SQL Server 2008 Release Candidate (Express)Beta

Jun 17, 2008

I downloaded SQL Server 2008 Release Candidate (Express) Beta on 6/16/08. Installation started but failed. A message stated Microsoft NET Framework 2.0 SP2 needs to be installed first.

I downloaded SP2 and installed it. However, when I try again to install the SQL 2008 Release Candidate Beta I get the same message that SP2 must first be installed.

Can someone tell me how to make the SQL Beta version installer recognize the previously installed SP2 Service Pack?

Thanks, Norman

SQL Server 2008 :: Tools To Search Database For Values

Nov 2, 2015

I tried to find a forum for "tools" with SQL Server 2008, but couldn't find anything, so hoping this is the right forum for my question.

I have recently installed RedGate SQL Search. Although I can use this tool for a lot of stuff, I mis-understood the details and thought it not only searched database objects, but would search inside individual rows inside tables for a value, but it does not do this.

I have been trying to search for a comparable product. I have found a bunch of stored procedures to do this, but I do not want to create a bunch of stored procedures for all the various databases we have, nor do I have the permission to do this.

Are there any tools like SQL Search that integrate (not a requirement, but definitely a nice bonus) with SSMS and will search the tables for a value in any given row, listing the table and column (it would be nice to list the entire row, but not required as with table and column, I can do a search for the row) for the given value?

I have found this product: [URL] ...., but I do not have any information on the company to know if they are reputable.

SQL Server Express 2008 - Missing Client Tools / Management Studio / Profiler

Dec 13, 2007

I downloaded and performed a full install of SQL Server Express 2008 Nov CTP. It was installed on a fresh installation of Windows Vista Enterprise x64.

During setup, I checked the 'Client Tools' box which has the description:
"Includes management and development tools: SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Server Configuration Manager, SQL Server Profiler, and Database Engine Tuning Advisor"

The installation ran fine with no errors. After install I looked for the Management Studio but couldnt find it anywhere. No SQL Server Profiler or Database Tuning Advisor either. The only tool that appears to have installed is the SQL Server Configuration Manager.

If I check my Start Menu, the only 2008 items that exist are

Dundas Question

Jul 16, 2007

Are there more opportunities to use expression-based chart configuration with the Dundas charts? With the default charts, you are most limited to hard-coding your chart.

With Dundas, can you choose 3D or 2D based on an expression?

Can you choose chart styles based on expressions (e.g. cones verse bars)?

Can you choose chart types based on expressions?

Thanks,

Michael

SQL Tools :: Deployment Of 2008 R2 Native Client?

May 25, 2011

I am trying to deploy the SQL Server 2008 R2 Native Client via group policy to a bunch of clients. But i am unable to find any documentation regarding if this is even supported?

I have the two files:  sqlncli(x86).msi and sqlncli(x64).msi that i have attached to a GPO as en assigned application. But the x64 package fails with this error:

Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Native Client -- The required IACCEPTSQLCLILICENSETERMS=YES command-line parameter is missing. By specifying this parameter, you acknowkledge that you accept the end user license terms for the Microsoft SQL Server 2008
R2 Native Client.

32 bit installed without this error. But if there is any documentation on this type of deployment and how to pass the parameters to a normal GPO deployment.

I can't find any info on supported deployment options.

Dundas Web Chart Control

Feb 21, 2007

I'm having trouble understanding how to build my bar chart. I have a column of info called Issue and then I'm coutning the record.
I bascially need to alter my query into time periods. I need a series for quarter 1 (1/1/2006 - 3/1/2006), one for quarter 2, 3, 4 and the entire year as a whole.
Can this data all be organized in a single select query?
Here is my current query getting the year as a whole data only:
SELECT Issue, COUNT(*) AS NumRecords FROM CSP_Item CI
INNER JOIN CSP_ProblemNotification CP ON CP.ID = CI.CSPNum
WHERE CP.PNDate BETWEEN '01/01/2007' AND '01/31/2007'

Design Tools / Sql Server Mgt Tools Cause Login Fail

Sep 20, 2007

Login failed for user 'TOSHIBA-USERASPNET'
I know that the file persmission for the web application have to include aspnet, so i keep resetting the folder permission for aspnet in file manager, but the login failed keeps coming back every day or two
problem is after working with VS05 Pro, SQL Server Management Studio CTP, somehow the aspnet persmission get changed, use alot of sqldatasource wizards and often there is a conflict/hang between the datasource wizard and the need to have the mdf in a dettached state within VS server explorer,
not sure but the procedure to fix this seems to be to reboot, detach and re-attach the mdf in the Sql server Studio tool, re-apply the aspnet file permission on the web app folders (wonder should i be doing this in IIS instead), make sure the mdf within server explorer is detached, the it works
anyway, getting real tired of the resulting delays and design time derailment, clues greatly appreciated, thanks
sometimes i can use View in Browser when in VS05 form view and i wont get the aspnet folder permission error and other times i do.
last thing, is it a bad idea to give aspnet full permission for the entire web applicaiton??

HELP: SQL Server Won't Release Memory

Jul 20, 2005

Hi,I am having an issue with SQL server that slows everything to a crawl, and makes almost any query impossible to complete. Here are the symptoms:I stop SQL, I start SQL. The task manager shows SQL starting up andquickly allocates 50 MB of memory. I then open SQL Manager and I canopen up the instance of SQL Server and I expand to see all of thedatabases, memory rises to about 70MB allocated. I then expand adatabase and view a list of tables. The memory allocation quicklyrockets to 860+ MB and any attempt to query they database results inhuge hang times.I have MacAfee anti-virus in place and it is constantly scanning forviruses, so I don't think it is a virus. The log files do not appearto be large. I have done everything I know to do to resolve this. Anyhelp would be much appreciated.Does anyone have any ideas?Thank you for taking the time to read this.Tod

Can Get Server To Release A Lock Without Using Kill Command

Aug 26, 2015

Anyway I want to know if there is a way to get SQL Server to release a lock without using the kill command. My reason for asking is because this morning I was investigating some deadlocks and thought it would be nice if SQL Server upon identifying a deadlock instead of killing the victim SPID would simply force the victim SPID to release the lock causing the deadlock so that the other SPID could continue and the victim would simply have to wait longer. That lead me to wonder if there was a T-SQL command or DBCC to force SQL Server to release a lock that I specify.

So, any way to get SQL Server to release a lock without using the kill command?

Backup Strategy - SQL2005 Tools Versus 3rd Party Tools

Jun 1, 2007

I am running SQL Server 2005 x64 Enterprise under Windows 2003 x64 Enterprise. My current backup strategy uses T-SQL jobs run by SQL Agent (writes out *.bak files) and then I have an Integration Services job that copies the *.bak files to our NAS device. I have performed a restore without issue. The jobs are all automated every four hours via SQL Agent. Is this a sound strategy or are there additional benefits to using 3rd party tools? If so, what are the advantages and which tool provides them?

Seeking Advice: SQL Server On Win 2008 Virtual Server Or Just Win 2008?

Apr 23, 2008

Hello - does anyone have experience w/SQL Server 2005 in a virtual environment? I'm considering this for a production environment but not sure if performance will suffer. Our databases will have a lot of writing but not too much reading. A SSRS solution is currently the only app. connecting to the SQL db. Max users to server at any given time will be very low (~10 users max). But the databases are pulling in data from other, outside multiple data sources on a daily basis.

Any pointers to documentation or any advice?

Thanks,

Problem With Windows Server 2008 And SQL 2008 Express

Feb 25, 2008

Hello!
Recently, I set up server with Windows Web Server 2008 RC1, SQL 2008 Express beta, .NET 3.5, IIS 7.
I'm running ASP.NET web application with SQL database. Everything works fine until the first application state on the server expires. After that, any postback that starts a new application state on the server and connects to the database, results in the following error:
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
Is this a bug that will be fixed in release of Windows / SQL or am I doing something wrong?
Many thanks for help,
Jan

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) Release A

My objective is to use Enterprise Manager to move (copy) my SQL db from the server to my windows desktop computer.

I downloaded MSDE and am having trouble installing it, no doubt because I do not understand the documentaion (ReadMeMSDE2000A.htm).

When I try to run setup, I get that message that says:

"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same."

Considering my purpose, do I need a "strong" SA password? If not, how do I get around it? If yes, how do I set it up?

I am a Mac user so I have poor windows skills, please make it as painless as possible for me, thanks!

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 CTP, February 2008

Mar 7, 2008

Hi all,

New to this so please be patient and please help.

I have developed an SQL 2005 Express command line option install for our company which has been working seamlessly for the last 18 months.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144259.aspx

I downloaded the €œMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 Express CTP, February 2008€? from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=749BD760-F404-4D45-9AC0-D7F1B3ED1053&displaylang=en

I simply replaced the 2005 file €œSQLEXPR.EXE€? with the 2008 file €œ€?, recompiled the installation and tested only for it to fail. I than read the 2008 books online and noted the change in command line options.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=19DB0B42-A5B2-456F-9C5C-F295CDD58D7A&displaylang=en

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144259(SQL.100).aspx

I then changed the command line to suit the Microsoft 2008 books online, recompiled the installation and tested only for it to fail once more.

Interestingly I tested the install from the default GUI and at the point of adding the €œsa€? login credentials it fails to allow the installation to proceed. Strangely by selecting the windows authentication credentials, €œnext€? than €œback€? it now allows me to add the €œsa€? login credentials and continues to install correctly as required.

I hope I have explained this clearly enough.

1. Is this a bug in the €œMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 CTP, February 2008€? installation?
2. If so is this causing the command line install options to fail?
3. How do I obtain a version of €œMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 Express€? that will work installing from the command line?

Thanks in advance.
