Remote MSDE Connection String?

Jun 26, 2004

For a SQL Server 2000 connection string I usualy use the following format:

server=somewhere.com;uid=sa;password=sa;database=myDB

or:

server=66.33.11.123;uid=sa;password=sa;database=myDB

However, now I am dealing with a remote MSDE database. What is the format to connect to a remote MSDE database? Is it:

server=<IPADDRESS><INSTANCENAME>;uid=sa;password=sa;database=myDB

Where <IPADDRESS> is the Ip address of the remote machine and <INSTANCENAME> is the MSDE instance name. Is this correct? If not, what am I doing wrong?

* It is an MSDE and not a WMSDE
* Firewall is turned off
* Server process is listening on 0.0.0.0:1433
* TCP/IP and Named Pipes are enabled using server network utility
* LoginMode=2 is set for mixed mode authentication in the registry
* Tried restaring the Process and even windows after the changes.

MSDE SQL Connection String Error

Jan 5, 2005

Hi;
Installed MSDE on computer by running:

c:setup INSTANCENAME="VSdotNET" SAPWD="PASSWORD" SECURITYMODE=SQL

REBOOTED AND sql SERVER iCON APPEARS on the lower desktop Icon bar, open it and it says:
Server: JOHN Servises: SQL Server Running \JOHN - MSSQLServer

opened a command prompt at c: and
entered osql -S JOHN -U sa -P password
and got the 1> reply on the next line

I typed EXIT

I had downloaded two scripts that create Pubs and Northwind SQL databases. I put them in the C: folder

I Typed at c:osql -E -i instpubs.sql

It created the pubs SQL database for me

I Typed at c:osql -E -i instnwinds.sql

It created the nwinds SQL database for me

I closed the command prompt and
went to the Administrator Tools in the Control Panel
I selected Data OLEDB Selected ADD entered Pubs and used default values for Pubs to create a connection Tested it OK

Then went and ran Visual Studio Net 2003
Checked to see if the pubs and northwind SQL databases where present in the Server Explorer drop down window.
I seleced the connect to database Icon and in it's Data Link Properties
I entered JOHN for server name
pubs for selected database on the server
with Provider as MS OLEDB for SQL Service
the Icon changed to connected.

I entered this in the code for page_load

Dim MyDS As New DataSet
Dim ConnStr As String
Dim SQL As String
ConnStr = "server=(local)C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLData;database=pubs;Trusted_Connection=yes"

SQL = "SELECT * FROM Titles " & _
"SELECT * FROM Publishers"
Dim MySqlConn As New SqlConnection(ConnStr)
Dim MySqlAdapter As New SqlDataAdapter(SQL, ConnStr)

'The SqlDataAdapter will automatically open and
'close the SqlConnection
MySqlAdapter.Fill(MyDS)

But I can not get this to work it errors out on line:

MySQLAdapter.Fill(myDS)

with: [SqlException (0x80131904): Unknown ProviderError Locating Server/Instance Specified ]
System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionPool.GetConnection(Object owningObject) +317

I change ConnStr to this:

ConnStr = "server=(local)data;database=pubs; uid=sa; Pwd=password" & _
"Trusted_Connection=true"

and get this error:
[SqlException (0x80131904): Shared Memory Provider: The system cannot find the file specified.
]
System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionPool.GetConnection(Object owningObject) +317

I've tried so many combination with and without user and password, I just don't get it, spent three long days stuck here, can someone help me out.

Note:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLData
Is the accual location on my machine that pubs database is located.

I can use the pubs SQL database in Web Matrix OK.

Is The Connection String For SQL Server And MSDE The Same?

would this be the same query string for MSDE database? I'm quite new in MSDE but I know that except for the tools that comes with SQL Server and its size, they are practically the same...

How To Configure Connection String For Remote Server?

Dec 5, 2006

Sorry for the newbie question, but....
I have developed a website on my local development machine. When I create the connections string VS automatically creates a path to my local hard drive inside the string.
Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:Documents and SettingsMikeMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005WebSitesPostAlertzApp_DataPADatabase.mdf";Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True
However, when I deploy this website to a remote server, SQLExpress tries to attach to the file using the wrong path. How do I fix this?
Your patience is appreciated...

Connection String For Remote Database Connectivity(SQL Server2000)

Jun 12, 2007

hai,
I am working on ASP.NET 2003 with SQLServer2000. My application requires to be connected to the Database which is there in my Headoffice.
My SQLServerName is "MyDBServerTestDB"
Database Name is "WebTO", UserID="******" and Password="******"
My Remote Server IP Address is "192.168.1.2" and its Static IP is "58.93.61.235"
I have specified the Connection string for my Remote Server as
"Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Server=58.93.61.235TestDB;UID=******;PWD=******;Database=WebTO"
                               (or)
"Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Server=58.93.61.235TestDB,1433;UID=******;PWD=******;Database=WebTO"           (1433 is the Port number of the Remote SQLServer)
but it is giving the error " SQL Server does not exist or access denied".
if i execute the same application at my Headoffice (Remote Server) by changing the Connection string as
"Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Server=192.168.1.2TestDB;UID=******;PWD=******;Database=WebTO"
then, it is working fine.
Can anyone tell me where i went wrong or what i have to specify in my Connection string so that i can access my Remote Database Server.
Thanks in Advance,
Srinivas.

Change Local Connection String On Remote Server

Jun 19, 2007

Hello,

I have searched every post and tried every connection string there but can't figure out how to connect to my database on my remote server. I am using Visual Developer 2005 Express Edition in C# and uploading it to a Windows server running asp.net 2.0. The domain has not resolved yet.

I am so new to this and have followed many tutorials step by step but none of them address this issue. They just show how to upload it to the server.

Do I need to use the SQL server provided by my host or can the database stay in the App_Data folder?

My local connection string works locally:

<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|add_newSQL.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

When I uploaded to my server I changed SQLEXPRESS to (local) as advised in the forum.

<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=(local);AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|add_newSQL.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

When I debug a page I get the <customErrors mode="Off"/>
error message even thought I have already set it in my remote web.config file which may be causing problems itself:

<configuration>

<appSettings/>

<connectionStrings>

<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=(local);AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|add_newSQL.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

</connectionStrings>

<system.web>

<customErrors mode="Off" />

<compilation debug="false" />

<authentication mode="Windows" />

</system.web>

</configuration>

Thanks for any help you can offer. I wish I could find someone to hire to do this part for me or teach me how over the phone. Any suggestions?

Cannot Set Connection Property Of Backup Database Task If Connection String Is Customized In Connection Object

Aug 23, 2006

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.

Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.

Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.

Is this an intrinsic issue?

Can Not Remote Login To MSDE

Nov 24, 2003

I installed MSDE at my server at home, and that works fine.
On the server I can access my MSDE perfectly.
But, from a remote computer it seems impossible to connect.

Some (maybe) important information:

To create a user at my msde I used:

sp_addlogin (@ the MASTER DB)
sp_adduser (@ My DB)
sp_addrolemember (@ My DB)

Then I runned SVRNETCN.exe and enabled TCP/IP.

btw: I don't have a firewall running and both computers are on the same local network.

2. probably not. before moving all DBs to a new MSDE server, I run scripts on daily via isql to these 3 MSDE to run the daily backup and dbcc jobs. The problem is I could forget to run.

I tried to run following:

MSDE Remote Connect Strange Problem

Connection failed:

SQLState: '08001'

I just did an netstat -an and I don't see the server listening on 1433.

What am I not doing?

The svrnetcn tool has no effect. I make a change and check the logs,

but nothing happens. What would be causing this?

SSIS Remote Connection Failing ... Local Connection OK

Mar 1, 2006

I'm getting "Access denied" error when I try to connect to SSIS from my desktop (Database Engine is fine). I'm a member of sysadmin within SQL, as well as an administrator on the server. I don't have any problem when I log on to the server directly via Remote Desktop and open SSIS.

I went into the surface area config tool, and I see that Database Engine and Analysis Services both expand and have a sub tabs to enable Services and Remote Connections, but Integration Services does not expand to a Remote Connections option, just Services. We're running MSDN Enterprise edition.

Does it matter if all the SQL services are using "Local System" for the logon ? I use an administrative logon on my SQL2000 boxes, and was fiddling with them on the 2005 box yesterday, but it seemed to cause more problems, so they are all Local System for now.

Am I missing something obvious ?

Can I Access MSDE On A Remote Machine With Enterprise Manager?

Sep 22, 2007

We just installed an application, WhatsUpGold, to monitor our servers. Management won't let me host that on my primary SQL box. So, we are using MSDE on the local machine (call that box my_netmon).

I can access the db with very basic functionality using osql while on the my_netmon machine. I've added my domain user account as a System Admin using the following commands.

exec sp_grantlogin @name
go

exec sp_addsrvrolemember @name, 'sysadmin'

But when I go to the my_sql machine and try to attach to it with Enterprise Manager I get an error that the server does not exist.

What gives??? Is it just not possible, or am I missing something here?

My goal is to just be able to see the data stored in the MSDE db. Write views, etc...

Please advise,

Marc

Bcp Cannot Connect Via Local Connection, But Can Using Remote Connection?

May 19, 2008

Hi. I'm (very) new to SQL Server. I have run into what seems to be a very common problem, judging by the number of Google hits, but it's not actually in the FAQs here, as far as I can see.

Situation
I installed SQL Server Express with Advanced Services 2005 on my Windows XP Pro laptop, using (with one exception) the default install. The exception was to put the data files on a separate partition (D: ) where I have more free space.

SQL Server Management Studio Express connects happily, and I set up a single data import table.

Issue: bcp Fails to connect to default local instance
I initially tried bcp in output mode, prior to working in earnest on importing my data. However the command line-

bcp MyDatabaseName.dbo.UserProfile out UserProfile.txt -T -c

Fails with the error-

Error = [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].

As I understand it, the local instance of SSE is the default, and should use a local (shared memory?) connection. This seems to work for Management Studion Express, but not bcp.

While investigating this problem, I tried enabling remote connections (all types) through the Surface Area Configuration wizard, and found that remote connections using either of:

bcp eSpacePh1.dbo.UserProfile out UserProfile.txt -T -c -S localhostsqlexpress
bcp eSpacePh1.dbo.UserProfile out UserProfile.txt -T -c -S mycomputernamesqlexpress

both work ok.

Extra Info
When starting Management Studio Express, it says something like "Configuring environment for the first time". However it says this every time it is started, not just the first run after installation, does this indicate some configuration data is not being successfully stored?

I have found threads that look similar to my issue-

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=836670&SiteID=1
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3351349&SiteID=1

However these do not relate directly to bcp, and to be honest my knowledge of SSE is slender enough at this stage that i'm unsure if there are really relevant.

Any hints on how to proceed much appreciated.

Regards: Colin E.

The Connection Name 'name' Was Not Found In The Applications Configuration Or The Connection String Is Empty

I have been trying to host my website on Go Daddy for about 3 weeks and I have cleared several problems but this one remains. I can get into the ASPNETDB database for doing logins , etc but I cant access my database called "PINEmgt".
To try to understand where the problem is located,I built a very simple application without login controls and put on it one Detailform accessing a single line table "Signin". I continually get the error message I got with my real app :"The connection name 'PINEMgtConnectionString2' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty. " There is only one connection string in my app -'PINEMgtConnectionString2'. When I run the app locally on my machine it works. After I move everything to Go Daddy, I get the error message and the following dump"

Line 28: SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [Signup]"></aspqlDataSource>

This is indeed the code from my single page app.

The dump is:

SQL Server 2008 :: Connection Manager Not Using Connection String Value

Feb 19, 2015

I have a child package where the ConnectionString property of a Connection Manager is set by a Parent Package Variable Configuration. I set up a script task that brings up a message box with the value of the ConnectionString property right before the dataflow task.

MessageBox.Show(Dts.Connections["CPU_*"].ConnectionString.ToString());When I run the parent package, the message box shows that the connection string is changing with every iteration, but in the dataflow it always draws the data from the same source.

The connection manager is an ADO.Net type, RetainSameConnection is set to False, and I've been researching this for days.

(Update 2/23/2015): To make this stranger, when I look at the diagnostic logs, they tell me that when the new connections are being opened they are using the new connection strings.

Edit Connection Manager Connection String At Runtime With C#

Jul 3, 2007

This is the first time I have used SSIS, so please bear with the ignorance.

I have a super simple package that inserts x000's of rows into a temporary table. The data source is a file that the user will upload. I need to be able to tell the package what file to upload. I'm thinking the simplest thing would be to edit the connectionString property of the SourceConnectionFlatFile at runtime. Is this possible? What form should the file path be in (UNC, other)? And, are there any other considerations I should be aware of?

Thanks!

Visual Studio 2005 The Remote Connection To The Device Has Been Lost. Please Verify The Device Connection And Restart Debugging.

Jun 19, 2006

Basically I've been using Visual Studio 2005 for a few weeks now moving a Pocket PC project from 2003 to 2005. When I hit the Start Debugging Button every time until today the project would rebuild and deploy to my pocket PC allowing me to debug etc but now I get

The remote connection to the device has been lost.

Please verify the device conection and restart debugging.

I used to get this problem in VS2003 sometimes and just like the numerous posts on different sites that I've looked at the problem eventually goes away and I'm none the wiser. One guy said that he found that if he went to bed the problem was resolved when he came back!

My PDA running Windows 2003 2nd Edition is directly connected to my PC via a USB port. I've rebooted my PC and done a soft reset on the PDA but it didn't help. I'm using ActiveSync 4.1.

Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?

MSDE Connection Problem

Nov 2, 2004

I have installed the MSDE that comes with VS NET 2002. For experimental reason's I have decided not to instal SQL and Office XP.

But the problem I have is that anytime I try to connect I receive an exception. The exception message is "No SQL server or Access Denied". I am not too sure if I am not doing something right or I have to instal office or SQL. I have created my database using the visual tools in the VS NET 2002.

Any help will very much be appreciated.
