Remote SQL Database File
Aug 3, 2003
Hi,
We have 2 Windows server installed . A installed with Windows 2000 server with SQL server 2000 and B is installed with only Windows 2003.
We setup the SQL database on Windows 2003 using a control panel and the database will be setup remotely on the Windows 2000 server.
Is it possible so that the SQL database file to be placed locally on Windows 2003 server instead on the Windows 2000 server which has the SQL 2000 server installed?
Thanks,

I €˜d like to discus with you the following REAL enough disaster scenario:
1. The TEST database is in the FULL backup mode.
2. WE have a full TEST DB backup and all tr. log backups.
3. DBA moved TEST database OFFLINE for maintenance operations.
4. MDF file for TEST DB was removed by mistake.
5. TRANSACTION LOG (LDF) file is OK.
6. DBA want to recover database to the point of failure.
According with MS SQL Server 2000 documentation it is possible.
We need to backup the transaction log , BUT I CANNOT DO THIS.
PLEASE, HELP.
In the same time, I can make LDF backup and recover database to the point of failure, if database is online and I stop/start SQL Server to remove MDF file.

Hi all,
Currently, my (small) intranet site is storing it's data on a remote SQL server. The danger with this, as has happened several times now, is that the application is twice as vulnerable; if either the webserver or the dataserver malfunctions or is unreachable, the application won't work.
I only recently discovered the possibility to use local database files (MDF files), and this seems like a much better solution for my site. But now I want to transfer the tables that are residing on the dataserver, to the MDF file. The database only contains tables. How do I handle this? I do not have access to the dataserver, only to a few databases that are residing on it. Is this possible using Visual Studio 2008? I have read about a "Bulk Copy Program" (bcp) which is included with SQL Server, but I cannot find a download for just that application.
Or is this totally not the way to go? I've discovered MDF files are a bit more problematic with concurrent connections; having tables open in Visual Studio results in "Site offline" or "Cannot open database" error messages on the website. Problems I've never had to deal with using SQL Server, but they are only minor problems.
Thanks,
Peter

Greetings, I have just arrived back into the country (NZ) and back into ASP.NET.
I am having trouble with the following:An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file (file location).../Database.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
It has only begun since i decided i wanted to use IIS, I realise VWD comes with its own localhost, but since it is only temporary, i wanted a permanent shortcut on my desktop to link to my intranet page.
Anyone have any ideas why i am getting the above error? have searched many places on the internet and not getting any closer.
Cheers ~ J

I know allot of folks are having this problem and I tried lots of things but nothing works. I understand the problem is coping the SQL Express on another server is the problem - I just not sure what to do?
Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.42; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.42
This is the last statement on the Stack Trace:
SqlException (0x80131904): An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file e:wwwdata81d0493fwwwApp_DataTestDatabase.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.]
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection) +735091
I checked my server forum and they said I had to name a database:
Example: Database=(unique name);
But this didn't work either.
I just tried a simple web project that has only one database and one table in SQL Express with one sqldatasource and one datagrid. It works fine on my pc but when I use the copy function in Visio Studio 2005 Pro - I can't run the site on the remote server: www.myjewelrydirect.com
I tried coping the database manually. I tried disconnecting the database before I copy it. Below is my connection statement:
<connectionStrings>
<add name="TestDB" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|TestDatabase.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
</connectionStrings>
With all the comments in these forums - this must be a bug.
I have been working on this problem for over 2 weeks - HELP!

I am trying to use the Import Wizard to setup a daily job to import new records based on an ID field (PK). The source database is remote and a replica. I am inserting new records to update my table called the same thing. Both are SQL Native Client
Code Snippet
select *
from [CommWireless].[dbo].[iQclerk_SaleInvoicesAndProducts] as S1
join [IQ_REPLICA].[dbo].[iQclerk_SaleInvoicesAndProducts] as S2
on S1.SaleInvoiceID = S2.SaleInvoiceID
where S1.SaleInvoiceID > S2.SaleInvoiceID
When I parse the query, I keep getting an error message.
Deferred prepare could not be completed.
Statement(s) could not be prepared.
Invalid object name 'IQ_REPLICA.dbo.iQ_SaleInvoicesAndProducts'. (Microsoft SQL Native Client)
Anyone know an easy why to get this to work? Or should I add a create table to verify new records?

I've used the ADS sample program and it works well. I looked at the code and changed it to VB (sorry, I'm not biligual yet), and have tried to 'adjust' it so I can connect to a remote PC (XP running IIS) instead of the local PC using the workgroup information database (system.mdw). Any ideas of the connection string that could make the connection?..my intention is to RDA once a week between a mobile device (3g/gsm) and a 'poor man's' IIS web server.
I've tried everything I can think of, and I'm sure its possible since all I'm doing is changing the connection path.

Hi there,When importing a text file using SQL Server, how do I specify the pathto a file on the same remote server that SQL Server is running on? Itried //c:/filename but that doesn't seem to work. Also, once the import is working, how do I write a DTS package tofirst delete all rows in a table, then repopulate with the text file,or is it easier to drop the table, re-create it and then repopulate? The table will contain approximately 30,000 records.thanks for your help,K

Hi,
This might be obvious - but if so I've missed it so far.
Is it possible to connect remotely to an Express database used in a website which is created in the App_Data folder by VWDEE 2005 and attached by filename?
As far as I can tell these databases don't have a name and aren't mounted until an attempt is made to access them. I certainly can't see any sign of it in SQL Management Studio.
Thanks,
Dale

I posted this question in the past and did not get any answer.
I put all my sources on a remote server mainly for backup purposes (the remote server is backuped every day) but when I have the .sdf file I can not open it from the visual studio 2005 configuration server here is the description of the problem:
I have an application that runs on a PDA and manage a database (.sdf) file I use C# with visual studio 2005
What I want to do is to add the database file (.sdf) to my project files and open a connection to it.
The problem is that all my source file are stored on remote machine and not locally on my machine and the .sdf file is also stored with the project source files.
When I try to add the file to the project I get the following error fro the data source configuration wizard :
"An error occured while retrieving the information from the database"
DRIVE_REMOTE
Parameter Name : N:
I get the same error also when I try to open a new connection to the file from the server explorer. When i copy the file to drive "C:" I can open a connection to it with no errors.

Dear all,
What I want to do is to backup my database through the SQL script, when the backup is successful, the .bak file is saved in my local harddisk. After that, I used the XYRunProc to execute a "copy" command to copy the .bak file to a remote server.
However, when I want to restore the database using the .bak on the remote server, I found that the .bak is corrupted. This problem does not exist if the file is copied to the remote server manually (click copy on local server and click paste on remote server).
Do anyone know what's the problem of this? This really made me very frustrated. Hope someone can help me, thank you very much!
Regards,
Strike

OK, Ive read many posts on this problem but have seen no resolution.
Here's the deal. When on the actual SQL box (There's 2 in the cluster) the bulk insert works fine. No errors and the event log on the machine that is hosting the text file shows that the account that SQL runs on has accessed the file. This account is a DOmain account and is in the Local Administrator of the SQL server and the remot box hosting the text file.
Thats great if you want your developers testing and accessing your SQL box as Administrators. We don't work that way. Our developers connect via SQL Management Studio and test ther stuff that way. That's where the problem rears it's ugly head.
When anyone runs a Bulk Insert command that accesses a text file that is on a remote server, they get an "Access Denied". Now, I did a lot of testing and found that when the users executes the Bulk Insert command from the SQL Management studio on their desk top, they connect to the SQL box with their credentials (OK, that's correct right?), SQL then runs the Bulk Isert command which then reaches out to the remote file server but gets the "Access Denied". I check the logs and it shows that "Anonymous" was trying to accesss the file.
Why is Anonymouss coming over as credentials for SQL on a Bulk Insert? I'm no idiot but this sounds like a big crappy bug tha M$ will not fess to. I followed many suggestions, made sure NTFS and Share level permissions were correct (That was the first thing...), made sure the account that was running as SQL Server within the cluster on both nodes in the cluster was the same, that wasn't it, I even created a SPN for SQL to run and automatically register in AD with the credentials that SQL runs as. NOTHING!!!
Has anyone gotten their bulk insert to work when inserting from a file that is NOT local to the SQL box? Any help is appreciated, but putting the text files on the local SQL box IS NOT AN OPTION.
Thanks

I am working on a project for an SQL job. I am:
1.) Taking a database out of an availability group,
2.) Setting the recovery to simple,
3.) Shrinking the log file,
4.) Setting the recovery mode back to full,
5.) Then backing it up.
I need to restore the file to my secondary server with replace and non recovery mode. I am having trouble performing that call? I have the code to reestablish the database to the availability group if I can get the restore feature working.Â

I want to poll an ftp site to see when files arrive, then I would like to download them, and move them into a different directory on the ftp site. It seems like I would have to do a lot to work around the limitations of the FTP Task. Is it capable of this sort of work? If not is there a 3rd party task that is better suited for ftp operations within SSIS?

Good afternoon-
Can a batch file that resides on another server be executed from a different machine? I have a batch file that resides on a server that I would like to run using SQL 2005 Integration Services. Is there anything I can do that would allow me to remotely execute this batch file and have it run in that environment.
BATCH FILE:
cd C:Trandev
otrun -at OTRecogn.att -DINPUT_FILE=%1 -tl 1 -cs dv -lg mylog -I
C:Trandev represents the remote environment
I have tried mapping the remote machine to a network drive on my local machine and using that drive to execute the batch file in an Execute Process Task, but it does not work.
SSIS:
I have a FOR EACH loop grabbing files and writing fileName to a variable that is passed to the Process Task as an argument through an expression(%1 in the batch file above). The Working Directory is a mapped network drive. The Executable is also a network drive plus batch file name.
Any help would be appreciated.
My computer is a HP Compaq dc7100, 512mb RAM, WindowsXP

I am developing a package to restore a database from backup file on a remote server. I am having problems accessing the remote backup file when it is addressed via the admin share, in this case N$. It runs okay if a specific share is created but for some unknown reason fails via the adminshare.
I am executing the package job with a proxy account that is a member of the local administrators group on the remote server.
It appears that access via a remote admin share isn't possible from within a SSIS package. Is this the case?

I have a remote batch file on machine B that I need to execute using 'Execute process task' control from a package on machine A. The batch file uses pgp software and encrypts a file sitting on machine B itself. The reason why my batch file is sitting on machine B, is because the PGP software is on machine B.
If I execute the batch file by itself from machine B, the script runs fine. I refer the same batch file as a UNC path from my package on machine A. But that does not work since the 'Working directory' is still machine A. I can not set machine B's folder as the working dir because it does not accept UNC path. So I say, ok , let me map a path to that UNC location and map it as drive 'Z:'. Certainly if I do so, I will be running the process on machine A and the batch file will look for the pgp software on machine A, and hence fail.
I have tried third party remote batch execution tools (PSEXEC) but have not had success, not because of SSIS limitations, but simply because the PGP executable when run through the PSEXEC tool, does not identify the location of the public keys on machine B and hence gives an encrytion failure.
How do I get the remote batch file to execute such that it executes with its own env? Is there a better remote execution tool I can try or are there any other features of SSIS I can use to get around this issue? I need the results of the batch file and hence do not want to make it an asyncronous process.
Thanks
Sumeet
