Remote View Question
Jul 20, 2005
I am connecting through EM to another SQL server for my web
site, is there a way to limit it so that I only see my database and
not all the 100's of others that are listed.
Also, sorry if this sounds dumb but I applied the sp3 sevice
pack and I dont know how to verify this, normallly one would go to
help>about and see it there, there was a sp3 and a sp3a, but a
friend told me to only apply the sp3, needless to say it seems slow
connecting and I would like to verify that everything is in working
order.
Thank You

We have a Foxpro database on our local machine and a shared sql server database on our remote machine. We have created a remove view that updates or inserts data into the sql server db using the local foxpro data.
What is the recommended way to secure these updates or inserts? We're worried that since our data is not encrypted, it is a security risk.
Thanks in advance.

I have Developer's Edition of SQL Server installed on my PC. I want my users to run and view my new RS report from their PCs across the network without installing SS on their machines.
We experimented a little bit by asking one user to use these URLs...http://mymachine/reports$myinstance and http://mymachine/reportserver$myinstance) after giving her browse rights in report manager from my PC.
When she uses the first URL, she gets a popup asking for sign in info, but gets nowhere when typing in her windows sign in info. When she uses the second, she gets thru to the report choices but gets an error like...
* An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted)
* Cannot create a connection to data source 'xxxxx'. (rsErrorOpeningConnection)
* For more information about this error navigate to the report server on the local server machine, or enable remote errors
...after choosing my report. xxxxx is the name of the only datasource in the report.
Before we began, we also turned off 'enable anonymous access' and instead clicked 'integrated windows authentication' in IIS on my pc.
My user is on a different domain controller than I am. I asked a colleague who is on the same domain controller to try the URLs and he had no problems running my report from either. He wasnt given any explicit permissions/rights at either the reporting or db level.
Does anyone have a clue?

I have 2 server A and Server B(remote 3rd party) both SQL server 2012. We need to query the data from remote Server B, we are planning to use either view or stored procedure. The query contain multiple joins to fetch data from around 10 tables(minimum 10 tables is there in initial analysis may be more tables will be added in future).If we are going to access the data through VIEW then we are going to write the below query
SELECT * FROM view-name WHERE Column1 ='abc' My first question
Q1. I have a doubt whether this query will load all the data from table joined in the view and then the WHERE condition implement as in the VIEW definition we are not implementing the filter condition.
Q2. Which will has better performance a stored procedure or view.
Q3. How to call a remote stored procedure or View. linked server is not allowed.
Does the 4 part server.DB.Schema.SPorView name will work.
I had search and find about OPENROWSET/OPENQUERY does it works without linked server.

Hi,
It appears to work fine on my end however on my clients end, whenever they try to print a report that displays perfectly within the report viewer to their printer by selecting the printer button in the report it never ends up printing.., however if they go into printer setup and change the page range to print from all pages to just maybe one page and then select the print button it seems to print fine..
The printer seems to receive the information as the light flashes but no page kick out when all pages is selected to print..
Any help would be greatly appreciated..

- When I disable "allow remote connections to this server" from server properties>connection page, I can still remotely connect to the server from SSMS...so what is the impact of enable/disabling it?
- what is the impact of changing the remote query timeout (on the same page) from default value?

Fellow Devs,
I have an instance of SQL Server Express 2005 running on another box and I have Remote Connections enabled over both TCP/IP and Named Pipes, but on my other box I keep getting the error that the server does not accept Remote Connections.
Any ideas why this might be happening? Is there some other configuration?

HiI'm going insane.I have a club starter kit on my local server which is working fine.I have migrated the database to my remote host and seems to have transfered ok.For a brief period I was able to connect to the database remotely, but now I cannot I get the following, even though SQL Server Surface Area Config is set to accept remote connections.An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.)This is my connection string;<add name="ClubSiteDB" connectionString="Data Source=xx.xxx.xx.xx,xxxx; Network Library=DBMSSOCN; Initial Catalog=tets; User ID=sqladminbob;Password=sqlbob4398;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient="/>I hav also tried to use aspnet_regsql.exe to add the remote provider but I get the same message. I am looking to create a constraint on a table that allows multiplenulls but all non-nulls must be unique.I found the following scripthttp://www.windowsitpro.com/Files/0.../Listing_01.txtthat works fine, but the following lineCREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX idx1 ON v_multinulls(a)appears to use indexed views. I have run this on a version of SQLStandard edition and this line works fine. I was of the understandingthat you could only create indexed views on SQL Enterprise Edition?

Write a CREATE VIEW statement that defines a view named Invoice Basic that returns three columns: VendorName, InvoiceNumber, and InvoiceTotal. Then, write a SELECT statement that returns all of the columns in the view, sorted by VendorName, where the first letter of the vendor name is N, O, or P.
This is what I have so far,
CREATE VIEW InvoiceBasic AS
SELECT VendorName, InvoiceNumber, InvoiceTotal
From Vendors JOIN Invoices
ON Vendors.VendorID = Invoices.VendorID

Hi guys 'n gals,
I created a query, which makes use of a temp table, and I need the results to be displayed in a View. Unfortunately, Views do not support temp tables, as far as I know, so I put my code in a stored procedure, with the hope I could call it from a View....
I tried:
CREATE VIEW [qryMyView]
AS
EXEC pr_MyProc
and unfortunately, it does not let this run.
Anybody able to help me out please?
Cheers!

I am trying to add a linked server from a AMD x64 server (Windows 2003) with SQL Server 2005 64 bit to a Server running SQL 2000. These are not in the same domain.
I can create a linked server using the option "Be made using the login's current security context" but can not when trying to specify the security context, i.e. sa and the sa password. When I try I get the following message:
Msg 15185, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_addlinkedsrvlogin, Line 98
There is no remote user 'sa' mapped to local user '(null)' from the remote server 'DTS_FSERVER'.
I have several other x64 server that I have no problem creating a linked server and specifying sa and the sa password.
The problem with using "the login's current security context" option is that I get an error when trying to run any Jobs against the linked server. The job fails withe the following error:
Executed as user: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM. Access to the remote server is denied because no login-mapping exists. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 7416). The step failed.
I'm sure the two errors are related. Any ideas what is going on?

I had given one of our developers create view permissions, but he wants to also modify views that are not owned by him, they are owned by dbo.
I ran a profiler trace and determined that when he tries to modify a view using query designer in SQLem or right clicks in SQLem on the view and goes to properties, it is performing a ALTER VIEW. It does the same for dbo in a trace (an ALTER View). He gets a call failed and a permission error that he doesn't have create view permissions, object is owned by dbo, using both methods.
If it is doing an alter view how can I set permissions for that and why does it give a create view error when its really doing an alter view? Very confusing.

FROM dbo.Lk_Feat INNER JOIN
dbo.SubFeat ON dbo.Lk_Feat.Idf = dbo.SubFeat.Idt
When ever I open using SQL Entreprise manager to edit it by adding or removing a field i inserts Expr1,2.. and I don t want that. The result I get is:
SELECT dbo.Lk_Feat.Descr AS Expr1, dbo.Lk_Feat.Price AS Expr2, dbo.Lk_Feat.Code AS Expr3, dbo.SubFeat.SubNmbr AS Expr4
FROM dbo.Lk_Feat INNER JOIN
dbo.SubFeat ON dbo.Lk_Feat.Idf = dbo.SubFeat.Idt
I don t want Entreprise manager to generate the Expr fields since I use the real fields in my application.

Has anyone seen this error? It comes up when my app executes a select statement via linked server (from MSSQL 2000 to 2005) the second time it runs. It's basically a timed poll of tables in the remote database. It works once but the second time it executes I get the error from the remote db, it's just a select but I guess the cursor is still open so it can't run again. After the exception the select will run again, once and it just repeats. I have researched it a little and it looks like it mostly has to do with the isolation level of the transaction. Unfortunately based on the componet being used to access the database I don't beleive I have the ability to use transact SQL to call the isolation level (s) listed.
Here's the weird part though, at another site the same scenario is running fine. Same primary and remote db versions of MSSQL as well as the application and it runs fine. I guess my question is what type of setup parameters that may be defined in MSSQL 2005 for the remote database might make it behave in this manner in one instance and not the other? TIA in advance for any thoughts/assistance.

I was looking through our vendors views, searching for something Ineeded for our Datawarehouse and I came across something I do notunderstand: I found a view that lists data when I use it in t-sql,however when I try to use the statement when I modified the view (viaMS SQL Server Management Studio) I can not execute the statement. I getThe column prefix 'dbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit' does not match with atable name or alias name used in the query.Upon closer inspection, I found two ON for the inner join, which I dontthink is correct.So, how can the view work, but not the SQL that defines the view?SQL Server 2000, up to date patches:SELECT dbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit.aEventID,dbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit.nParentEventID,dbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit.nUserID,dbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit.nColumnID,dbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit.nKeyID,dbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit.dChangeTime,CAST(dbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit.vToValue ASnVarchar(512)) AS vToValue, dbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit.nChangeMode,dbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit.tChildEventText, CASEWHEN nConstraintType = 3 THEN 5 ELSE tblColumnMain.nDataType END ASnDataType,dbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit.nID,CAST(dbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit.vFromValue AS nVarchar(512)) ASvFromValueFROM dbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit WITH (NOLOCK) LEFT OUTER JOINdbo.tblColumnMain WITH (NoLock) INNER JOIN---- Posters comment: here is the double ON--dbo.tblCustomField WITH (NoLock) ONdbo.tblColumnMain.aColumnID = dbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit.nColumnID ONdbo.tbl_5001_NumericAudit.nColumnID =dbo.tblCustomField.nColumnID LEFT OUTER JOINdbo.tblConstraint WITH (NOLOCK) ONdbo.tblCustomField.nConstraintID = dbo.tblConstraint.aConstraintID AND(dbo.tblConstraint.nConstraintType = 4 ORdbo.tblConstraint.nConstraintType = 9 ORdbo.tblConstraint.nConstraintType = 3)UNION ALLSELECT aEventID, nParentEventID, nUserID, nColumnID, nKeyID,dChangeTime, CAST(CAST(vToValue AS decimal(19, 6)) AS nVarchar(512)) ASvToValue,nChangeMode, tChildEventText, 5 AS nDataType,nID, CAST(CAST(vFromValue AS decimal(19, 6)) AS nVarchar(512)) ASvFromValueFROM dbo.tbl_5001_FloatAudit WITH (NOLOCK)UNION ALLSELECT aEventID, nParentEventID, nUserID, nColumnID, nKeyID,dChangeTime, CAST(vToValue AS nVarchar(512)) AS vToValue, nChangeMode,tChildEventText, 2 AS nDataType, nID,CAST(vFromValue AS nVarchar(512)) AS vFromValueFROM dbo.tbl_5001_StringAudit WITH (NOLOCK)UNION ALLSELECT aEventID, nParentEventID, nUserID, nColumnID, nKeyID,dChangeTime, CONVERT(nVarchar(512), vToValue, 121) AS vToValue,nChangeMode,tChildEventText, 3 AS nDataType, nID,CONVERT(nVarchar(512), vFromValue, 121) AS vFromValueFROM dbo.tbl_5001_DateAudit WITH (NOLOCK)

A colleague of mine has a view that returns approx 100000 rows in about 60 seconds.
He wants to use the data returned from that view in an OLE DB Source component.
When he selects the view from the drop-down list of available tables then SSIS seems to hang without any data being returned (he waited for about 15 mins).
He then changed the OLE DB Source component to use a SQL statement and the SQL statement was: SELECT * FROM <viewname>
In this instance all the data was returned in approx 60 seconds (as expected).
This makes no sense. One would think that selecting a view from the drop-down and doing a SELECT *... from that view would be exactly the same. Evidently that isn't the case.
Can anyone explain why?
Thanks

Hey, all. I've mainly worked with MySQL databases before. I'm working on an (old) ASP page that uses this connection string:strConnect = "Provider=SQLOLEDB; Data Source=SQL1.MYDBSERVER.NET; Initial Catalog=...; User ID=...; Password=..."
It works fine on the production server, but the local copy fails if I try to access the Products page (which uses the database), with this error: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server (0x80004005)[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied./html/products.asp, line 19Similarly, if I plug the connection info into Tools/Connect to Database in Visual Studio, I get: Connection failed:SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need more info from the hosting provider to connect remotely? Or is the database not accepting remote connections at all?Thanks in advance for your help!

hi all,
i have a local SQL server running with my Products table, now very soon we want to launch a website (asp.net 2.0 with sql 2k5), hosted on a shared environment, which synchronises with our local SQL. Replication is out of the question.
i tested already with a webservice on our local server, but i can't find the right way how to periodically update our online Db.since our website has over 200 visits a day, i can't do a check everytime the code is launched.Our local server has a slow upload speed + is not 99.9% garantueed online... the dataset has a 1Mb file size.
i do have a boolean which indicates if there are new products or not, in this way i don't have to download the full dataset on my local SQL.(i can provide a list with only the new products and a list of products which have to be deleted, but still, i'm looking for the best way WHEN to do the update)
Forcing an update from my local server to the online server seems a problem since i have restricted rights on the online server.

Hi
I have a web application and SQL database on separate SQL 2000 server. I have no admin rights to these servers.The ISP gave me a VPN connection and password to manager my database.If i run the application from my home computer WITH the VPN connected the application works fine.However if i disconnect the VPN or try to run the application from the remote server i get this error:SQL Server does not exist or access deniedI have researched this problem extensively and CANNOT find a solution. The application and SQL 2000 database server are on different computers. The SQL user id and password are different from the VPN connection's.My web config looks like this:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<configuration>
<appSettings>
<add key="mappedname" value="username"/>
<add key="mappedkey" value="password"/>
</appSettings>
<system.web>
<globalization fileEncoding="utf-8" requestEncoding="utf-8" responseEncoding="utf-8" />
</system.web>
</configuration>
And the application connection string is as follows:Dim usersql As String = System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("mappedname")
Dim passsql As String = System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("mappedkey")
connectionString = "data source=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx;initial catalog=databasename;"
connectionString &= ";user id=" & usersql
connectionString &= ";password=" & passsql
I am obviously missing something. Not sure what or how to pass the permissions on properly.Can some kind soul please help me with this problemThank YouJeff
