Remote Login To MSDE 2000 (Desktop)
Dec 5, 2004My question is, is it possible to connect to an SQL database using the MSDE 2000 SP3a edition over the internet? And if so, how do I set it up? Thank you in advance.

View 1 RepliesMy objective is to use Enterprise Manager to move (copy) my SQL db from the server to my windows desktop computer.
I downloaded MSDE and am having trouble installing it, no doubt because I do not understand the documentaion (ReadMeMSDE2000A.htm).
When I try to run setup, I get that message that says:
"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same."
Considering my purpose, do I need a "strong" SA password? If not, how do I get around it? If yes, how do I set it up?
I am a Mac user so I have poor windows skills, please make it as painless as possible for me, thanks!

Can someone advise me if this is basically SQL server 2000 and will work effectively to simulate sql server on a stand alone development machine ? Is this what its meant for?
I'm just not clear on this, here is the link:

Thanks in advance for any advice.
I installed MSDE at my server at home, and that works fine.
On the server I can access my MSDE perfectly.
But, from a remote computer it seems impossible to connect.
Some (maybe) important information:
To create a user at my msde I used:
sp_addlogin (@ the MASTER DB)
sp_adduser (@ My DB)
sp_addrolemember (@ My DB)
Then I runned SVRNETCN.exe and enabled TCP/IP.
btw: I don't have a firewall running and both computers are on the same local network.
Hello.
Has anyone attempted and successfully installed SQL Server 2000 SP4
via remote desktop on the cluster.
The reason I am asking is that SP4 readme file has this:
"...
4.3 Systems Management Server Distributed Installation
You cannot install Database Components SP4 from a remote location.
..."
Currently SQL Server has SP3a installed.
Thank you in advance.
How do I add login user ASPNET to my SQL 2000 Desktop Engine Server?. I can not find the "Server Manager" in the Start - Programs. Is there any other way to get around adding ASPNET login to the SQL server so I can test my VB program. I got the error: Login failed for user 'com_nameASPNET'.

HELP! this is driving me mad!!
I installed MSDE desktop with no problems... months later when creating a database, I stupidily forgot the "sa" password that I set during setup... So I decided to unistall MSDE and reinstall it, this time documenting the username and password... BUT now it is giving me errors which I am unable to solve... is there anyone out there that might be able to help me??
I go to a command-line, locate the directory where the install program lives and type in "setup SAPWD=(a password) SecurityMode=SQL" and it returns the follow error message:
"Setup Failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and setup error logs"
My problem is I don't know where to locate these error logs. Please if anyone can help me with this problem I would greatly appreciate it.

Dear all,
This week I was told to setup MSDE Desktop Engine on my pc bcz my Access back end db is getting bigger in size. And as a little advance step, I decided to put my Access back end on SQL server.
To be frank, I have no experience with SQL server but after reading the instructions, I have installed MSDE (latest version) on my pc successfully. A small icon of SQL server appeared nearby clock icon of my pc showing the SQL server is running on ASHFAQUEPC.
I shifted a Trial db onto this server in following way.
Considering the opened Trial db would be my BE, from the Tools---Database Utility---Upsize wizard, I followed below steps according to Upsize wizard.
1.I selected ‘Local’ server and check marked to ’Use Trusted Connection’.
2.And then I selected some tables to export
3.Kept all default attributes of db as it is
4.Selected ‘Let the wizard decide’ under data option to include.
5.At the next step ‘What application change do you want to make?
a.Create a new Access client/Server application.
b.Link SQL Server tables to existing application.
c.No application changes. (I selected this option)
Then it showed me the report of my db description of changes that were made after deploying it. The report I did not print bcz it was a trial db with one table (2 fields) and a simple query.
My idea was to connect my Trial BE with another one of another Access mdb file so FE would be Access and BE would be from MSDE.
1.Now I don’t know how to link my BE to my FE?
2.From where I can directly see my BE? Because SQL Server Service Manager does
not have any menu?
3.Where I was wrong in following steps?
Guidance in this regards is highly appreciated.
With kind regards,
Ashfaque

I connect to a compute via Remote Desktop Connection that is running SQL Server 2003. That part works. However, once I'm connected, and running SQL Server, I cannot see my user name in SQL, when I use the query, "SELECT user_name as ()". What I see instead is "DBO". Nor does it show me as being in a particlar group. I also cannot see my Windows Authentication remote computer name.
I think it has something to do with using my PC to do the Remote Desktop Connection and then from there, running SQL Server 2003, but am lost on this one.
Can anyone help? I sure would appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I've experienced a problem (bug?) when deploying reports to the report server. My users kept complaining about losing authentication to reports when I deploy a new report. I found the problem but don't understand why this is happening. My collegue developped the earliest reports and loggs in with a different user on Remote Desktop to develop the reports. When the report is deployed, the datasources are deployed also.
Now when I log in on Remote Desktop with another user then my collegue and open the same report project, and check out the datasources, the credentials are gone ... ?!? So when I deploy a report the datasource with the empty credentials are deployed too, wich causes all the authentication problems.
My Question: How comes I can't see the user credentials my collegue filled in? When I open the report project the credentials are gone. I log out, my collegue loggs in, and the credentials are back
I suppose this has something to do with Remote Desktop and the users connecting to it?
Thanks in advance!
I need to write a stored procedure or SSIS to export data to client's desktop. What is the best way to achieve it?
The requirement is to develop a web application the client can click on the button and the file will be saved to the clients' local C drive.
How should I configure the destination path here?
Hi,
Does anyone know if it's at all possible to install SQL Server Express 2005 over a Remote Desktop on a Windows XP machine.
I know there are problems running SQL over Remote Desktop, in that it won't start up a User Instance, but I wasn't sure if we can install over Remote Desktop.
If it's not possible, can anyone point me to an official document stating this fact?
Thanks
Sam
I was able to do this on a Windows XP machine but I am not able to get this to work on a Windows 2003 Server machine.I am connecting to the Windows 2003 Server and MS SQL Express via remote desktop on the lan. This is what worked for me before:EXEC sp_grantlogin '4800X2ASPNET'USE MyDBEXEC sp_grantdbaccess '4800X2ASPNET'EXEC sp_addrolemember 'db_owner', '4800X2ASPNET'But for some reason now I am getting this error:Msg 15401, Level 11, State 1, Procedure sp_grantlogin, Line 49Windows NT user or group '4800X2ASPNET' not found. Check the name again.Msg 15401, Level 16, State 1, Line 1Windows NT user or group '4800X2ASPNET' not found. weird is the old copy of this query I used had the local pc as the
computer name. If I exchange the computer name from the remote pc name
to the local 2003 Server machine name, the query works fine. Although
that still doesn't let me add connections via Web Developer Express
without error. It doesn't make sense to me anyhows, how could I have
used the local machine's name and not the remote machine's name to get
this to work previously. So confused.Thank you in advance for help.
ProblemWhen Remote Desktop to my main office machine, and when trying toconnect to SQL Express, I was becoming increasingly frustrated with thefollowing error:Error: 'Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to afailure in starting the process for the user instance. The connectionwill be closed.'What is the solution?Solutions: ( pick any of the 3)1. Obtain and apply the patch http://support.microsoft.com/?id=8966132. Wait for the next Windows Service pack3.Of course if you can not get the patch, you can always do this (Note:You must have WinVnc server running in your remote computer)1. In the remote desktop session, reboot your computer.Click Start->Windows Security->Shutdown->Restart.Wait for some time to get machine up.2. Use your vncviewer to login to your remote computer. You can chooseto do all work via VNC or go to next step.3. Use remote desktop to login (this automatically closes the winvncsession). There you go, You did not create a remote session, but reused yourlocal session.

I'm using ssms 2014, but got the same problem with 2012. I use ssms almost entirely on remote desktop sessions ( Windows 7, Server 2008R2, Server 2012 ). It may be related to having filtered job activity monitor windows open for hours, but about once per day ssms fails, and has to restart. Upon resuming usually only one of several queries is restored.

I have a few questions about the SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE), sorry there are so many ..
1. Which software products does this come with ?
2. If I create a SQL Server Database and want to distribute it to clients, how do I actually do it with MDSE ?
3. If I need to "upgrade" my database at some point in the future (that may contain data at a client site) how would I go about getting all the data out - would I need to write an external app ?
4. What are it's pros and cons when compared to installing full SQL Server on a client site ?
5. I've heard that the preformance of an MSDE Database degrades severely after more than 5 concurrent connections, is this just due to the performance of the product or is it something to do with the licencing model ?
6. Is it possible to write applications in, say VB, to alter the database once it has been installed on client site e.g. modify/create tables, indexes, stored procedures ?
Thanks for any help in advance ..
Scott..
I have used the Upsizing Wizard in Access 2003 to convert a database to SQL. When I open it using SQL 2000 Desktop edition, I am finding a problem with the views and stored procedures.
When I open a query in design view, the tables are displayed in the upper pane without the details of the individual fields. All I get is a tick box next to *(All Columns)
If I create a new table, the same thing happens. If I create a new database, then make a table within it, any queries behave normally, with all the fields displayed.
I would be grateful for any ideas
Has anyone had trouble accessing SQL 2000 desktop install over the LAN on SBS 2003?
I cannot access my installation from the same domain, yet when I install it on a machine running something other than SBS 2003 there are no problems.
Everything seems shared correctly, and I have tried loggin on to the remote machine as Administrator with no success.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Trying to install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine on my laptop. I downloaded the software and opened it to a folder on the C drive. Then from the command prompt I entered this:
C:msderela>setup sapwd = hillary instancename=mjh targetdir=c:mike
The program starts to install and seems to get near to the end of instal and then the progress bar starts going backwards and nothing gets installed....any ideas of what I'm doing wrong....I really don't know anything about this at all.
Thanks
Did a SQL Server Desktop Engine 2000 (MSDE) having SQL Agent module?

Hi,
I am developing a windows application that needs to communicate with a remote SQL server 2005 database. Server allows remote connections and MSDTC service also running. Do I need to run MSDTC service on the client machine where I use desktop application ? any ideas ? It's throwing some error like
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.
When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact
that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
But my SQL Server allows remote connection, and I am able to do a select statement.
But when I insert/update anything, it's throwing this error. I guess some problem with MSDCT. Anybody have any idea ?
